THE SWITCH IS LIVE
|
|

On the night of a 21st birthday, a family gathers for dinner in a home where tension quietly lives beneath the surface. As the evening unfolds, small moments begin to reveal the pressures each person is carrying, turning a familiar celebration into something far more fragile.
The Switch is a character-driven short film that explores family, responsibility, and the unseen weight of everyday life. Set in a single location and unfolding in real time, the film focuses on performance, atmosphere, and emotional authenticity to capture a moment that feels both intimate and universal.
Written and directed by Tommy J Housman, the film was created as part of a 16-week student collaboration with his Video Production class and Jon Robertson’s Sound Reinforcement and Recording Class at the University of Evansville. Shot in one room over the course of a single day, produced in one semester The Switch uses a minimalist approach and guided improvisation to build a natural, lived-in dynamic between its characters. |

Softball drops Friday doubleheader to Valparaiso
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Friday’s doubleheader saw Valparaiso defeat the University of Evansville softball team in a pair of games at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at Cooper Stadium. UE dropped a 13-3 game to open the day before Valpo took game two by a final score of 7-1.
Game 1 – Valpo 13, UE 3
Helped by an 8-run fifth inning, Valparaiso took the opener by a final score of 13-3 in five innings.
Valparaiso opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the 2nd. With one out, the Purple Aces rallied in the bottom of the frame. Jess Willsey, Ashtyn Holbrook, and Emma McDonald each singled to load the bases to bring Keghan Pye to the plate. On the 12th pitch of her at-bat, Pye reached on an error that scored two runs. UE tacked on another run to take a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Beacons regained the lead with four runs on two hits to go up 5-3 before putting the finishing touches on the win with an 8-run fifth. The Beacons posted 13 runs on eight hits and nine walks.
Kate Ridgway took the loss allowing nine runs in four innings. Sydney McDermott threw the full five frames for Valpo giving up three runs on four hits. Four different players recorded hits for UE including Niki Bode, Willsey, Holbrook, and McDonald.
Game 2 – Valpo 7, UE 1
Valpo scored the first five runs of game two before finishing with a 7-1 victory. Just as they did in the opener, the Beacons jumped on top early as they scored twice in the top of the 1st before adding two more in the top of the 2nd.
Evansville had its first scoring chance in the bottom of the 3rd when Emma McDonald and Keghan Pye led off with singles. Unfortunately, three quick outs ended the threat. After Valpo added a run in the top of the 4th, the Aces got on the board with their first run of the game in the bottom of the 5th. Brooke Voss’ triple to right field brought in McDonald who walked to lead off the inning.
The Beacons added two more scores in the top of the 7th to finalize the 7-1 victory. Azalya Lopez picked up the win for VU allowing one run on five hits. Alexis Tucker was tagged with the loss allowing seven runs, three earned, in seven innings. UE had five hits in the game with Brooke Voss going 2-4.
Saturday’s series finale begins at 2 p.m. with Senior Day festivities set to begin roughly 20 minutes before the game. |

UE softball clinches a spot in 2026 MVC Championship
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville softball team has clinched a berth in the 2026 Missouri Valley Conference Championship. UE will be the #6 seed and face the third seed on Wednesday at 3:05 p.m. in Carbondale, Ill.
UE completed the regular season on Saturday with a 4-1 loss to Valparaiso at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at Cooper Stadium. Valpo scored a single run in the top of the first to open the scoring. Taylor Howe doubled in the bottom of the first while Morgan Adams and Ashtyn Holbrook walked in the second, but the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Beacons.
Two more walks along with a Niki Bode single loaded the bases in the bottom of the third as the Aces continued to threaten before Valpo got out of each jam. In the top of the fourth, the Beacons broke through as a Cadan Brinkman bases-clearing double made it a 4-0 game.
Looking to make a late comeback, Evansville loaded the bases with one out in the 7th. Singles by Bode and Maliyah Wilkins along a walk by Howe loaded the bases. Morgan Adams hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run for the Purple Aces, but an out at third base ended the game.
Kate Ridgway allowed four runs, only one earned, in four innings. Alexis Tucker threw the final three frames and allowed just two hits. UE had six hits in the game including a 2-4 effort by Niki Bode. |

UE ChangeLab Expands Mental Health and Education Access for Latino Community
|
|
The University of Evansville (UE) continues to strengthen its commitment to serving the region's Latino community through its Latino Community Outreach ChangeLab, a program dedicated to addressing critical needs in healthcare and education while fostering connection and trust.
Since its launch in fall 2020, the initiative has developed a range of programs designed to meet evolving community needs. Grounded in the philosophy of "building bridges, not walls," the outreach prioritizes culturally responsive care and community partnerships.
A recent highlight includes a collaborative mental health workshop for Latino adolescents and their families, hosted at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Evansville. The event was led by Assistant Professor of Spanish Dr. Cindy Crowe in partnership with Dr. Jennifer Braun, Director of the UE Emily M. Young Mental Health Clinic, and students from UE's Koch Family Doctor of Psychology Program. Working alongside Fr. Martin Estrada, the well-attended session focused on self-esteem and communication, offering resources in a welcoming and culturally affirming environment.
To further support access to care, the ChangeLab was awarded a $3,000 grant from the Rotary Club of Evansville to fund interpretation services at the clinic, helping ensure language is not a barrier to receiving mental health support. The initiative also contributes to advancing knowledge and awareness in the medical community. Presentations on Latino healthcare and mental health have been delivered at Deaconess Midtown Hospital, including sessions in fall 2025 and spring 2026.
"The University of Evansville continues to deepen its partnerships across the community while expanding access to culturally competent care and educational opportunity," said Dr. Cindy Crowe. "By working hand-in-hand with local organizations and healthcare providers, we are not only addressing immediate needs but also building sustainable pathways that empower individuals and families for the long term." |
