* University of Evansville to Honor Zerah Priestly Carter '38, First African American Graduate

The University of Evansville (UE) will honor Zerah Priestly Carter '38 in a memorial bench dedication on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 2:30 p.m.

The dedication ceremony will take place on the northeast side of the Sesquicentennial Front Oval.

In partnership with the UE African American Alumni Association (UEAAA), the dedication recognizes Zerah Priestly Carter's role in shaping the University's history and expanding access to education.

In 1938, Mrs. Carter earned a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Education from then Evansville College, now the University of Evansville. Mrs. Carter went on to teach in Evansville's public schools, influencing generations of students through her commitment to education and service.

The memorial bench serves as a lasting, visible tribute to her legacy and the path she helped to create.

"Zerah Priestly Carter changed the course of this University with courage and conviction," said UE alumnus and Emeritus Trustee Dr. Michael D. Woodard '69. "At a time when doors were closed by segregation, she opened them for those who followed. This memorial bench ensures that her legacy is not only remembered, but experienced every day, and challenges us to continue expanding opportunity."

The ceremony will feature remarks by Shateka Woods-Bard M'11, president of the UE African American Alumni Association; Mrs. Carter's nephew, Timothy Womock; Dr. Michael D. Woodard '69; and formal dedication remarks by University President Christopher M. Pietruszkiewicz.

The bench is made possible through the generosity of the UE African American Alumni Association. The University community and the public are invited to attend.

* UE THEATRE PRESENTS THE HUMANS

The University of Evansville Theatre closes out its 2025–2026 season with THE HUMANS, by Stephen Karam. This production opens at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 23, in the May Studio Theatre. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m., on April 24 and 25, and, at 2 p.m., on April 25 and 26.

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the 2016 Tony Award-winner for Best Play, THE HUMANS, packs a punch in this tragicomedy dealing with economic anxiety, guilt, grief, and forgiveness.  Masterfully rendered by a brilliant playwright, the play centers around a family gathering on a Thanksgiving night in a ramshackle apartment in lower-Manhattan.  As the sun goes down, tensions rise, and this middle-class family is left exposed and vulnerable—resulting in both a humorous and heartbreaking look into the realities of modern familial life.

THE HUMANS is directed by Landry Barker, a senior performance major from Fort Worth Texas. Brayden Havard, a junior performance major from Montgomery, Texas, serves as the scenic designer; Mia Lacy, a junior directing and dramaturgy major from Frisco, Texas, is the costume designer; Jonah Charpie, a junior design and technology major from Noblesville, Ind., is the lighting designer; Danny Perez, a senior performance major from San Antonio, Texas, is the sound designer; Olivia Roy, a junior stage management major from Henderson, Ky., serves as the stage manager; Sydney Gepson, a sophomore theatre studies major from Queen Creek, Ariz., is the dramaturg; and Visiting Assistant Professor Andy Hammond is the technical director.

The cast features Gage Dragoo, a sophomore performance major from Frisco, Texas, as Erik Blake; Rachel Disney, a sophomore performance major from Louisville, Ky., as Deidre Blake; Reese Hickman, a sophomore performance major from The Woodlands, Texas, as Momo Blake; Jamy Lentz, a junior performance major from Denton, Texas, as Aimee Blake; Ally Cavender, a first-year performance major from Arab, Ala., as Brigid Blake; and Antonio Cortés Román, a senior performance major from Metepec, Mexico, as Richard Saad.

Single tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for senior adults, UE faculty/staff, and non-UE students. UE students may obtain one free student rush ticket beginning at noon on the day of the performance they wish to attend. UE Theatre is also excited to continue the “Pay What You Will” initiative for the Thursday evening performance in the May Studio. Tickets may be purchased online at theatre.evansville.edu or by calling the ticket office at 812.488.2031, Monday through Friday, 12 to 5 p.m.

* Ben Wierzba Named University of Evansville Head Women's Basketball Coach

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –  Ben Wierzba has been hired as the 12th head coach in Evansville Women's Basketball program history, UE Director of Athletics Dr. Kenneth "Ziggy" Siegfried announced Thursday afternoon.

A public introduction will take place on Friday, April 24 at 2 p.m. inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.

"This is a new day for Aces Women's Basketball," said Siegfried. "Ben Wierzba is a proven leader who has been part of building a championship program, and more importantly, he is someone who cares deeply about student-athletes. When I offered him the position, his emotion said everything about how much this opportunity means to him. He understands Evansville, he values relationships and accountability, and he is ready to make an immediate impact on our program and in our community."

In a coaching career that has spanned 25 years across nine different institutions, Wierzba has established a track record of success. Wierzba's most recent stop came as the associate head coach at Miami University, where he helped orchestrate a turnaround that culminated in MAC Regular Season and Tournament titles and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2025-26.

No stranger to the University of Evansville, Wierzba served as an assistant coach for the Purple Aces' men's basketball program from 2007-10.

"The University of Evansville holds a truly special place in my heart," said Wierzba. "I spent three meaningful years here early in my career over 15 years ago, and it's also where I met my wife—so this opportunity feels incredibly full circle for our family. I'm grateful for the chance to return and lead the women's basketball program. We're ready to hit the ground running, build strong relationships, and develop a culture that competes at a high level. I'm excited to get to work and build this into a winning program that our players, university, and community can be proud of."

In three seasons in Oxford, Wierzba helped the Redhawks to a record of 56-39, including a 33-21 mark in the MAC. In 2024-25, Wierzba helped guide Miami to a 10-win improvement and an appearance in the WNIT. This past season, the Redhawks were one of the top mid-major teams in the country, going 28-7 with a 16-2 record in MAC play, earning a 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Redhawks finished the season ranked eighth in the Mid Major Top 25 poll.

Prior to his time at Miami, Wierzba served as an assistant coach at Mercer University, where he helped the Bears become mainstays in the NCAA Tournament. From 2015-2023, Wierzba helped Mercer post a record of 166-80 with an 87-24 record in the Southern Conference. The Bears won five SoCon Regular Season and four SoCon Tournament titles from 2015-22, making four NCAA Tournament appearances and two appearances in the WNIT. From February 24, 2017 to March 2, 2019, Mercer won 34 consecutive regular season SoCon games. During his time in Georgia, Wierzba mentored five SoCon Players of the Year, four SoCon Defensive Players of the Year, two SoCon Freshmen of the Year, one Academic All-American, and one WNBA Draft selection.

Before arriving at Mercer, Wierzba spent one season as an assistant men's basketball coach at SIU Edwardsville in 2014-15, where he helped the Cougars to their most Division I and Ohio Valley Conference wins in program history at the time.

Wierzba's first head coaching job came as the head men's basketball coach at the University of Illinois Springfield from 2010-14. In Springfield, Wierzba guided the Prairie Stars through their transition to NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Wierzba took the team to three consecutive GLVC Tournaments from 2012-14 and mentored one All-GLVC First Team selection, two All-GLVC Second Team selections, and two GLVC All-Defensive Team selections.

Prior to his time at UIS, Wierzba made stops as an assistant men's basketball coach at North Dakota, St. Joseph's College, Army, Lewis, SIUE, and Evansville.

As a student-athlete, Wierzba was an All-Region 24 selection at Lake Land College before helping South Alabama reach the NCAA Tournament in 1998 and earning All-GLVC honors at SIUE in 1998-99.

Wierzba and his wife, Liz, have three children, Addy, Livvy and Eli.

What others have to say about Coach Wierzba:

* Rally falls short as softball falls to WKU

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Trailing by a 6-0 score in the 4th, Maliyah Wilkins hit a grand slam to bring the University of Evansville softball team within a run before Western Kentucky finished with a 7-5 win on Wednesday at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at Cooper Stadium.

Wilkins led the way for the Purple Aces finishing with four RBI off the grand slam. Morgan Adams recorded two hits as UE finished the game with seven. WKU registered 12 hits in the contest with Jenna Blanton going 3-for-4.

Western Kentucky took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo home run from Annie White. Brooke Voss looked to tie the game as she led off with a single. A Hilltopper error saw her try to score before being called out on a close play at the plate.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the second, WKU looked to add more in the top of the third when they loaded the bases with one out. Angela Valentine made a huge defensive play at third to turn a double play to keep the deficit at two runs. The Hilltoppers struck again with four runs in the fourth. Evansville made another stellar defensive play to limit the damage. Jess Willsey backhanded a ground ball to second and flipped it to Voss for the out.

In the bottom of the 4th, the Purple Aces got on the board. Taylor Howe led off with a single and stole second before advancing to third on a passed ball. She scored on Eliza Piggott’s base hit. Her efforts were the start of a 5-run inning that saw Evansville cut the gap to a single run. Morgan Adams followed with a double while Willsey reached on a walk to load the bases.

Maliyah Wilkins entered to pinch hit and sent the first pitch she saw over the left field wall for a grand slam. It was her second home run in as many nights. WKU stranded two runners in the top of the 6th as UE kept it a 1-run ballgame. In the top of the 7th, the Hilltoppers added an insurance run and would finish with the 7-5 win.

Alexis Tucker suffered the loss as she allowed two runs in an inning of work. Elle Jarrett threw 2 2/3 frames while Sophia Otten threw the final 3 1/3 with just one unearned run scoring over that span. Erica Rouge was credited with the win for the Hilltoppers. She threw the final 3 2/3 innings allowing just one hit.

This weekend, UE travels to Bradley for a 3-game set.

* University of Evansville, Vincennes University Partner to Create Direct Entry Pathways for Health Professions Students

The University of Evansville (UE) and Vincennes University (VU) have formalized a new partnership designed to create streamlined, direct-entry pathways for students pursuing careers in athletic training and physical therapy.

Through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), students enrolled in VU's Bachelor of Science in Health Care Services Administration with a Pre-Doctor of Physical Therapy/Master's of Athletic Training concentration will have the opportunity to transition directly into UE's graduate programs, including the Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). The agreement establishes a clear, structured pathway for qualified students, providing early assurance for admission into competitive graduate programs.

Eligible students may apply for direct entry into UE's MSAT program after their sophomore year by maintaining a minimum 3.50 GPA, completing an interview, and securing a faculty recommendation, with up to five students admitted annually. Students may also pursue direct entry into UE's DPT program, where up to three students per year are selected through a competitive process. In both pathways, students must maintain academic standards to retain their direct entry status.

"At the heart of this partnership is student opportunity," said Dr. Andy Lampkins, Dean of the College of Education and Health Sciences. "We are creating a direct, supportive pathway that allows students to stay focused on their goals while preparing for success in high-demand healthcare fields."

The agreement also includes coordinated academic advising between the two institutions to ensure students complete prerequisite coursework and remain on track for success. Faculty and administrators from both universities will work together to monitor progress and support a seamless transition from undergraduate to graduate study.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment by UE and VU to expand access to high-demand healthcare careers and strengthen the pipeline of highly trained professionals in athletic training and physical therapy.

* University of Evansville and the U.S. Chamber Foundation Partner to Bring the 2026 National Civics Bee to Southern Indiana

The University of Evansville (UE) is proud to host the first-ever Evansville Civics Bee, in partnership with the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership (E-REP) and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, marking the inaugural Civics Bee in Southern Indiana.

This live event, part of the 2026 National Civics Bee, will take place on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in Hyde Hall, Shanklin Theatre.

The National Civics Bee is a nonpartisan, nationwide competition designed to engage middle school students in civics, critical thinking, and community involvement. Students in grades 6-8 are invited to submit a four-paragraph essay proposing a solution to improve their community. Top finalists will advance to a live quiz competition, with prizes including a $5,000 donation to the winning student's school, as well as recognition at the state and national levels. This initiative strengthens civic knowledge while developing writing, public speaking, and problem-solving skills.

"Changing lives and changing the world starts with engaged, informed citizens," said Christopher Pietruszkiewicz, President of the University of Evansville. "By hosting the first-ever Civics Bee in Southern Indiana, we are empowering young learners to recognize the difference they can make in their communities while building the skills and confidence to be engaged, active participants in democracy."

"Hosting the first-ever Civics Bee in Southern Indiana is exactly the kind of unique opportunity that strengthens a region," said Kara Yates, Executive Director of Workforce & Education at E-REP. "When students learn how their communities work, they're more prepared to lead, serve, and improve the place they call home.

"As we approach America's 250th anniversary, we have a powerful opportunity - and responsibility - to reignite civic learning across the country," said Hilary Crow, vice president of civics at the U.S. Chamber Foundation. "Our hope is that the National Civics Bee inspires more schools to prioritize civics education, equipping young people with a deeper understanding of how our government and democracy work - and the essential role they play in strengthening their communities and our nation."
