The University of Evansville (UE) proudly honored four outstanding educators in Vanderburgh County with prestigious awards during its 35th annual ceremony on April 8.
Each recipient received a surprise announcement within their school, celebrating their remarkable contributions to education.
Specific to Vanderburgh County, this competition recognizes exemplary classroom teachers and building principals in grades K-12, each possessing a minimum of three years of experience. These esteemed awards are made possible through the generous sponsorship of UE, Evansville Liberty Federal Credit Union, and the Evansville Courier & Press.
Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year: Holly Carey
Holly Carey, a fourth-grade teacher at McCutchanville Elementary School, has been named the Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year. She teaches reading, writing, and social-emotional learning, creating a classroom environment where students are encouraged to build relationships, develop confidence, and grow as lifelong learners.
Beyond her classroom, Carey plays a significant leadership role within her school community. She supports colleagues through professional development in inclusion, universal design for learning, and instructional best practices, while also helping to realign curriculum and assessment strategies across grade levels. A passionate advocate for student leadership, she leads the school's Student Lighthouse team as part of the Leader in Me initiative, guiding efforts that promote kindness, community engagement, and a positive school culture.
Carey's teaching philosophy centers on creating a safe, engaging, and joyful learning environment where students feel valued and empowered to take risks. With 20 years of teaching experience, including 14 at Corpus Christi, Simmons is recognized for her dedication to fostering meaningful relationships and creating an inclusive, student-centered learning environment. She teaches science across grades 6-8 while also supporting students throughout the school in a variety of subjects, allowing her to build strong connections with learners at every level.
Beyond the classroom, Simmons is deeply involved in her school community through a wide range of leadership roles. She serves as an eighth-grade homeroom teacher, helping prepare students for the transition to high school, and plays a key role in organizing milestone events such as graduation and service initiatives. As a Family Council sponsor, she helps guide student leadership and coordinate school-wide programs that promote community and engagement. She creates a welcoming and inclusive classroom where students feel valued and supported, using hands-on, project-based learning and differentiated instruction to meet diverse needs. GWS Book Discussion: Nobody's Girl by Virginia Roberts Giuffre- April 27, 4:30pm, Dunigan Lounge
|
|
Open to faculty, staff, students, and alumni: the Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies Program is hosting a book discussion on Monday, April 27 at 4:30pm in the Dunigan Lounge (SOBA 160). We will discuss the book Nobody's Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice by Virginia Roberts Giuffre. If you are interested in participating, you need only borrow or purchase the book and read or listen to it prior to our meeting date. See below for more information about the book by the publisher Knopf (Penguin Random House):
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The unforgettable memoir by the late Virginia Roberts Giuffre, the woman who dared to take on Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell
“Make no mistake: this is a book about power, corruption, industrial-scale sex abuse and the way in which institutions sided with the perpetrator over his victims. . . . But it is also a book about how a young woman becomes a hero. . . . Important [and] courageous.” —The Guardian
The world knows Virginia Roberts Giuffre as Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s most outspoken victim: the woman whose decision to speak out helped send both serial abusers to prison, whose photograph with Prince Andrew catalyzed his fall from grace. But her story has never been told in full, in her own words—until now.
In April 2025, Giuffre took her own life. She left behind a memoir written in the years preceding her death and stated unequivocally that she wanted it published. Nobody’s Girl is the riveting and powerful story of an ordinary girl who would grow up to confront extraordinary adversity.
Here, Giuffre offers an unsparing and definitive account of her time with Epstein and Maxwell, who trafficked her and others to numerous prominent men. She also details the molestation she suffered as a child, as well as her daring escape from Epstein and Maxwell’s grasp at nineteen. Giuffre remade her life from scratch and summoned the courage to not only hold her abusers to account but also advocate for other victims. The pages of Nobody’s Girl preserve her voice—and her legacy—forever.
Nobody’s Girl is an astonishing affirmation of Giuffre’s unshakable will—first, to claw her way out of victimhood, and then to shine light on wrongdoing and fight for a safer, fairer world. Equal parts intimate and fierce, it is a remarkable narrative of fortitude in the face of depravity and despair. |

The Encyclopedia of Triangle Centers, ETC (https://faculty.evansville.edu/ck6/encyclopedia/etc.html ), is the subject of an article in the online publication of the French association of mathematics teachers: https://www.apmep-iledefrance.fr/Connaissez-vous-ETC. The article can be quickly translated, with caption "Are you familiar with ETC? For lovers of triangle geometry!". Published just last week, the author of the article is René Drucker, who has contributed hundreds of GeoGebra pictures of individual triangle centers. The pictures are accessible as zip files in the Introduction to ETC. The encyclopedia, having been hosted by UE for a quarter-century, recently reached a total of 72,000 triangle centers, starting with the famous ancient Greek points: centroid, incenter, circumcenter, and orthocenter. More recent developments in triangle geometry are given in https://grokipedia.com/page/Triangle_center and https://grokipedia.com/page/Encyclopedia_of_Triangle_Centers. |

Harvard University Professor Receives the Inaugural UE Professor Azarian's Prize for Mathematical Reviews
|
|
The Mohammad K. Azarian Prize for Mathematical Reviews Reviewers, named after Dr. Mohammad K. Azarian, professor of mathematics at the University of Evansville (UE), was presented for the first time at the 2026 Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, D.C., honoring outstanding contributions to peer review in mathematics.
The award, which carries a $5,000 prize, recognizes reviewers whose work demonstrates technical insight, clarity, and service to the global mathematical community.
The inaugural recipient of the Azarian Prize is Dr. Arnav Tripathy, the Benjamin Peirce assistant professor of mathematics at Harvard University, who earned his PhD from Stanford University in 2016. The 2026 prize was awarded to an early-career research mathematician (predoctoral through 10 years post-PhD). Subsequent prizes will honor a contributor for lifetime achievement and a contributor from a nation and institution served by the MathSciNet for Developing Countries program.
The Azarian Prize reflects the remarkable legacy of Dr. Azarian, a lifetime member of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). He is a reviewer for the AMS's Mathematical Reviews (MathSciNet) and the European Mathematical Society's zbMATH Open. Professor Azarian served four years as a Discipline Peer Reviewer for the Fulbright Scholar Program (2015-2018) sponsored by the United States Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. He served on the AMS Committee on the Human Rights of Mathematicians (2021-2023), and in 2023, he was the chair of the committee and was the AMS Representative on the American Association for the Advancement of Science Human Rights Coalition.
"His decades of tireless service as an educator, researcher, reviewer, advisor, and editor are truly inspirational," said Doug Allen, AMS associate vice president for development.
"I am grateful to recognize the outstanding reviewers whose work sustains the value of Mathematical Reviews," said Dr. Azarian.
This recognition continues Dr. Azarian's decades-long commitment to scholarship, mentorship, and service at the University of Evansville and beyond. In April 2025, UE announced that Dr. Azarian made history as the first Muslim and the first Iranian American mathematician to have two prestigious mathematics awards named in his honor by the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
The University of Evansville congratulates Dr. Azarian on his enduring contributions to the global mathematical community. For more information about Professor Azarian's scholarly work, visit faculty.evansville.edu/ma3. |
