* Brooke Voss' grand slam paces softball to 10-7 win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Brooke Voss’ grand slam in the first inning of game two helped the University of Evansville softball team split Friday’s doubleheader against Northern Iowa. After the Panthers opened with a 5-2 win, the Purple Aces took game two by a score of 10-7.

Game 1 - UNI 5, UE 2

A 3-run third inning saw UNI take the early lead before finishing with a 5-2 victory in the doubleheader opener.

Both teams had early scoring opportunities as the Panthers stranded two runners in the top of the first with Kate Ridgway striking out two batters. Ridgway pitched out of another jam in the top half of the second when UNI hit a leadoff double and loaded the bases with two outs. A bunt single by Taylor Howe was followed by a Niki Bode double that put two runners in scoring position with one out before the Panthers were able to avoid any damage. Angela Valentine recorded a 2-out hit in the bottom of the second.

In the top of the third, UNI broke through when Ava Smithson hit a 3-run home run. The Panthers continued to roll in the inning as they loaded the bases with no outs. Ashtyn Holbrook made a huge defensive play to keep it a 3-0 game. She threw a runner out at home on a fly ball to right field as the Aces got out of the inning trailing by just three runs.

Howe’s double off the left field wall brought in Angela Valentine for UE’s first score of the afternoon in the top of the fifth. Northern Iowa quickly responded with two runs in the 6th to go up by a score of 5-1. Jess Willsey hit a solo home run in the top of the 7th before UNI finished with the 5-2 win. Anna Wischnowski allowed two runs on five hits while throwing the full game for the Panthers.

Ridgway went three innings and allowed three runs. Gracie Hollingsworth and Sophia Otten threw two frames apiece. Howe recorded two of the Aces’ five hits.

Game 2 – UE 10, UNI 7

An 8-run first inning lifted the Purple Aces to a 10-7 victory to split Friday’s doubleheader.

UNI capitalized on the momentum from the game one victory as Skylar Benesh hit a leadoff home run to give them the early 1-0 lead. Evansville quickly turned the tides. Singles by Brooke Voss and Maliyah Wilkins along with a Niki Bode walk loaded the bases with one out. Eliza Piggott was hit by a pitch to tie the score at 1-1.

With two outs, Ashtyn Holbrook, Angela Valentine, and Emma McDonald each drew bases loaded walks to make it a 4-1 game. That brought Voss to the plate with the bases loaded and the junior drove the first pitch she saw over the left field wall to cap off an 8-run inning. Looking to chip away, the Panthers loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the second before Alexis Tucker ended the threat with a strikeout.

UE was not as lucky in the top of the third as a 3-run home run y Drew Hinrichs cut the advantage down to four runs. The looked to get even closer in the 4th before Angela Valentine’s huge defensive play ended the inning after UNI had two runners on.

Evansville got back to work in the bottom of the 4th with Taylor Howe registering a leadoff single before scoring on a Bode triple. Maliyah Wilkins followed with a single up the middle to bring in Bode for the Aces’ 10th run of the game. Those insurance runs proved to be important when a 3-run homer by Skylar Benesh cut the lead in half (10-7) in the top of the 5th.

Gracie Hollingsworth was stellar in the late innings to seal the win. She retired all seven batters she faced to shut down the Panthers on the way to her first save of the season. * Morgan Caba named graduate assistant for UE volleyball

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville head volleyball coach Zach Weinberg has announced the addition of Morgan Caba as a graduate assistant with the Purple Aces program.

"Adding Morgan to our staff is a huge win for Evansville Volleyball. She brings a drive and a fire that will benefit this program immediately, and we can't wait to get her integrated into the team,” Weinberg said. “She will work immediately with our backcourt players, and I know her vast experience in her playing days will pay dividends immediately for that young group. Welcome to the Purple Aces, Morgan!"

The Georgetown, Ky. native brings experience as both a student-athlete and coach to the UE program. Last season, Caba played for Marshall University where she helped the Thundering Herd make its first Sun Belt Conference Tournament appearance.

Prior to her tenure at Marshall, Caba played for West Virginia State University. In 2024, her WVSU team captured its first-ever Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship while advancing to play in the Atlantic Regional of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Caba earned All-MEC Second Team accolades and was ranked nationally in aces per set. She opened her college career at Bellarmine where she was part of the Knights first A-Sun Tournament berth.

Caba has gained valuable coaching experience over the last three years. She served as the Co-Head Coach of the 15 Elite team with the Mountain Monsters Volleyball Club from December of 2024 through May 2025. During that time, she gave private lessons for all ages within the club and hosted weekly clinics for all age groups and skill levels. Her first coaching tenure came with the 13 Regional team at the Kentucky-Indiana Volleyball Academy (KIVA). As an assistant coach in 2023, she conducted lessons and weekly clinics.

She earned her Bachelor’s in Biology: Plant and Soil Science from West Virginia State in 2025 and is working towards Master’s Certification in Data Analytics in Healthcare at Marshall.

* Aces defeat Bellarmine in midweek action

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – After scoring five runs in the first two innings, the University of Evansville softball team held on for a 5-3 victory over Bellarmine on Wednesday at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at Cooper Stadium. With the victory, UE improves to 8-1 in its last nine games.

Taylor Howe and Niki Bode each recorded two hits. Howe scored twice while Bode plated a run. Jess Willsey and Brooke Voss also scored. Alexis Tucker threw six innings on the way to her fifth win of the season.

It did not take long for the Purple Aces to get rolling as they recorded four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brooke Voss led off with a walk while Howe and Bode singled to load the bases with no outs. Eliza Piggott hit a sacrifice fly to open the scoring.

Willsey followed with the third single of the inning and moved to second on an error by the Knights. Two runs would score on the play. Ashtyn Holbrook followed with another single to cap a 4-0 start. In the second frame, Howe executed another bunt single before scoring on a double from Bode.

While the offense had the early momentum, the defense did its job as Alexis Tucker tossed a gem. In six innings of work, Tucker allowed one run on three hits while striking out two batters. The Knights never gave up as they scored three runs in the top of the seventh and loaded the bases with two outs. Kate Ridgway entered and was able to record the final out to earn her second save of the season.

UE is home for a 3-game weekend series against UNI. A 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Friday opens the weekend before a single game at 2 p.m. Saturday.

* Harvard University Professor Receives the Inaugural UE Professor Azarian's Prize for Mathematical Reviews

The Mohammad K. Azarian Prize for Mathematical Reviews Reviewers, named after Dr. Mohammad K. Azarian, professor of mathematics at the University of Evansville (UE), was presented for the first time at the 2026 Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, D.C., honoring outstanding contributions to peer review in mathematics.

The award, which carries a $5,000 prize, recognizes reviewers whose work demonstrates technical insight, clarity, and service to the global mathematical community.

The inaugural recipient of the Azarian Prize is Dr. Arnav Tripathy, the Benjamin Peirce assistant professor of mathematics at Harvard University, who earned his PhD from Stanford University in 2016. The 2026 prize was awarded to an early-career research mathematician (predoctoral through 10 years post-PhD). Subsequent prizes will honor a contributor for lifetime achievement and a contributor from a nation and institution served by the MathSciNet for Developing Countries program.

The Azarian Prize reflects the remarkable legacy of Dr. Azarian, a lifetime member of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). He is a reviewer for the AMS's Mathematical Reviews (MathSciNet) and the European Mathematical Society's zbMATH Open. Professor Azarian served four years as a Discipline Peer Reviewer for the Fulbright Scholar Program (2015-2018) sponsored by the United States Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. He served on the AMS Committee on the Human Rights of Mathematicians (2021-2023), and in 2023, he was the chair of the committee and was the AMS Representative on the American Association for the Advancement of Science Human Rights Coalition.

"His decades of tireless service as an educator, researcher, reviewer, advisor, and editor are truly inspirational," said Doug Allen, AMS associate vice president for development.

"I am grateful to recognize the outstanding reviewers whose work sustains the value of Mathematical Reviews," said Dr. Azarian.

This recognition continues Dr. Azarian's decades-long commitment to scholarship, mentorship, and service at the University of Evansville and beyond. In April 2025, UE announced that Dr. Azarian made history as the first Muslim and the first Iranian American mathematician to have two prestigious mathematics awards named in his honor by the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

The University of Evansville congratulates Dr. Azarian on his enduring contributions to the global mathematical community. For more information about Professor Azarian's scholarly work, visit faculty.evansville.edu/ma3.

* University of Evansville and the U.S. Chamber Foundation Partner to Bring the 2026 National Civics Bee to Southern Indiana

The University of Evansville (UE) is proud to host the first-ever Evansville Civics Bee, in partnership with the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership (E-REP) and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, marking the inaugural Civics Bee in Southern Indiana.

This live event, part of the 2026 National Civics Bee, will take place on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in Hyde Hall, Shanklin Theatre.

The National Civics Bee is a nonpartisan, nationwide competition designed to engage middle school students in civics, critical thinking, and community involvement. Students in grades 6-8 are invited to submit a four-paragraph essay proposing a solution to improve their community. Top finalists will advance to a live quiz competition, with prizes including a $5,000 donation to the winning student's school, as well as recognition at the state and national levels. This initiative strengthens civic knowledge while developing writing, public speaking, and problem-solving skills.

"Changing lives and changing the world starts with engaged, informed citizens," said Christopher Pietruszkiewicz, President of the University of Evansville. "By hosting the first-ever Civics Bee in Southern Indiana, we are empowering young learners to recognize the difference they can make in their communities while building the skills and confidence to be engaged, active participants in democracy."

"Hosting the first-ever Civics Bee in Southern Indiana is exactly the kind of unique opportunity that strengthens a region," said Kara Yates, Executive Director of Workforce & Education at E-REP. "When students learn how their communities work, they're more prepared to lead, serve, and improve the place they call home.

"As we approach America's 250th anniversary, we have a powerful opportunity - and responsibility - to reignite civic learning across the country," said Hilary Crow, vice president of civics at the U.S. Chamber Foundation. "Our hope is that the National Civics Bee inspires more schools to prioritize civics education, equipping young people with a deeper understanding of how our government and democracy work - and the essential role they play in strengthening their communities and our nation."
