* Aces sweep DH over Sycamores as Ridgway throws no-hitter

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Pitcher Kate Ridgway threw her second no-hitter of the 2026 season as the University of Evansville softball team swept a doubleheader against Indiana State on Wednesday at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at James and Dorothy Cooper Stadium.

Game 1 – UE 8, Indiana State 0 (6 innings)

Kate Ridgway tossed her second no-hitter of the season to lead the Purple Aces to an 8-0 victory in Wednesday’s opener. Jess Willsey went 2-2 with a home run and two runs while Niki Bode added a pair of hits.

Evansville took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Taylor Howe reached on an error and would score on Morgan Adams’ 2-out single. Things remained at 1-0 in favor of UE until the bottom of the fourth when Willsey launched a solo home run to deep center field to double the lead.

In what would be a wild finish to the contest, the Aces scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the victory. Two runs scored when Brooke Voss reached on an error while Emma McDonald crossed the plate on a Taylor Howe single to make it a 5-0 game. Niki Bode singled to bring in Howe while Voss scored on a Sycamore error. Maliyah Wilkins had the clinching hit as her double scored pinch runner Dori Brown to wrap up the 8-0 contest.

Game 2 – UE 10, Indiana State 2 (5 innings)

Evansville scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to clinch its second walk-off victory of the day over Indiana State. Angela Valentine went 2-2 with two RBI, two runs, and a walk while Emma McDonald and Morgan Adams added two hits apiece. McDonald, Brooke Voss, and Jess Willsey joined Valentine with two runs batted in.

Indiana State had the first threat of the game as they loaded the bases in the top of the first. Alexis Tucker pitched out of the jam, getting a strikeout to send the game into the bottom of the frame. The Sycamores came through to open the scoring in the top of the third.

It did not take long for the Aces to respond. In the bottom half of the inning, Angela Valentine led off with a walk before Brooke Voss hit a 2-run homer to left field to give UE a 2-1 advantage. Taylor Howe followed up with a double and crossed the plate on a Morgan Adams RBI single to make it a 3-1 game. ISU got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth.

Just as they did in game one, the Aces finished strong. Seven runs in the bottom of the fifth ended the game and gave Evansville its second walk-off victory of the day. UE quickly loaded with no outs and pinch hitter Maliyah Wilkins drew a walk to open the scoring. Next up was Willsey who hit a 2-run single.

After a walk from Ashtyn Holbrook, Valentine followed with a 2-run double to left center. With two runners in scoring position, McDonald stepped to the plate and delivered the clinching 2-run single to finish the 10-2 contest. Alexis Tucker threw 4 1/3 innings with two runs scoring. She struck out seven. Sophia Otten recorded the final two outs.

* Toby Wilcox announces retirement from coaching

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville (UE) Head Swimming and Diving Coach Toby Wilcox has announced his retirement from the coaching profession. Wilcox rejoined the Purple Aces program in 2024 following a 13-year tenure as head coach at Birmingham Southern.

“It was such a great experience to return to the University of Evansville,” Wilcox said. “Being able to reconnect with so many from the school, program, teammates, and student-athletes was a great way to finish out my coaching career!”

The 1985 UE graduate began his coaching career with the program in 1986. He garnered eight conference “Coach of the Year” accolades during his collegiate career.

After serving as an assistant coach with the Aces from 1986-88, Wilcox’s first term as head coach at UE ran from 1988 through 1997. In 2011, he started the swimming and diving program at Birmingham Southern College (BSC) and remained with the institution until 2024.

“Toby Wilcox has been an important part of the University of Evansville swimming and diving family for many years. Even though he returned for just the past two seasons, his connection to this program goes back much further,” said Dr. Ziggy Siegfried, Director of Athletics. “Toby has always cared deeply about our student-athletes and about representing UE the right way. We are grateful for his commitment to the program and wish him nothing but the best as he begins this next chapter.”

In his time at BSC, Wilcox built the program into a perennial power in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA), earning 16 SAA team titles on the men's and women's sides. He has coached 121 individual SAA champions, 57 SAA relay champions, and helped direct 35 student-athletes to the NCAA Division III National Championships.

During his tenure, Wilcox helped produce 13 SAA "Swimmers of the year," seven SAA "Divers of the Year," and 11 SAA "Newcomers of the Year." Wilcox earned five SAA "Coach of the Year" honors during his tenure at Birmingham Southern.

Wilcox was a 3-time Midwestern Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year during his first tenure at Evansville. He coached 24 athletes to individual titles and three MCC Swimmers of the Year. As a student-athlete at UE, Wilcox earned both MCC and Heartland Collegiate Conference MVP honors in 1984. He was a 2-time team MVP while serving as team captain.

A national search for the next coach is under way.

* University of Evansville Expands Signature ChangeLab Program to High School Students for the First Time

The University of Evansville (UE) has expanded its ChangeLab program to the high school level for the first time, marking a significant milestone in youth-led innovation and community change. Lucy Howe is the first high school student ever to earn class credit for a changemaking project prior to graduation through UE's nationally recognized ChangeLab program.

Through a partnership between Memorial High School and the Center for Innovation & Change (CIC), UE created bridge credit and approved internship time for Memorial students to gain hands-on experience. Howe spent an entire semester walking to the CIC three times a week, where she developed and advanced a community-focused project designed to make a meaningful impact before she graduates. Howe also placed second in the recent annual High School Changemaker Challenge.

Her selected project focuses on launching a flag football program for children in the Evansville Promise Neighborhood. Flag football was intentionally chosen for its many benefits: it is affordable and accessible, provides excellent physical exercise, emphasizes safety, and is inclusive and co-ed, allowing kids of all genders and abilities to participate together.

"ChangeLab has meant the world to me. Being able to walk onto campus and work on a project that I'm passionate about and that will help the community is really powerful. Everyone at the CIC supports me in the biggest ways. You will never come across a more encouraging and genuine team of leaders that truly want to help you make a difference," said Lucy Howe, Memorial High School senior and ChangeLab participant. "I'm incredibly grateful to be given this opportunity to do real work in the community as a high school student, and even get class credit for it. This program has given me a new sense of purpose and confidence. Just because you're young doesn't mean you can't make a difference."

ChangeLab is the UE's flagship changemaking program, designed to support students as they turn ideas into action and address real-world challenges. With this expansion, motivated high school students can now earn college credit while still in high school by working on community-based changemaking projects.

"Lucy's work demonstrates what's possible when schools invest in students as creative problem solvers," said Erin Lewis, Executive Director of the Center for Innovation & Change. "For young people who want to make a difference, this is the best place in the nation. We hope other schools will explore this affordable way for young people to distinguish themselves and earn college credit early."

UE holds the distinction of being Indiana's only Ashoka Changemaker Campus, a global designation recognizing institutions committed to social innovation and changemaking. Through the Center for Innovation & Change, students collaborate with experienced coaches and community partners to drive meaningful impact.

"Partnering with the University of Evansville has brought new experiences to our students and better prepared them for college and beyond," said Aaron Schmitt, Principal of Reitz Memorial High School. "Being on campus for courses has helped to show our students the expectations and opportunities that a university has for them when they leave Memorial. Changelab, in particular, has allowed our students to pursue a passion that will affect change in the wider community. As a Holy Cross Catholic school, this fits directly in line with the mission that has been given to our staff and students - the competence to see, and the courage to act."

This first-of-its-kind partnership with Memorial High School creates a new pathway for high school students to engage in college-level, impact-driven learning all while strengthening the Evansville community.

* University of Evansville and the U.S. Chamber Foundation Partner to Bring the 2026 National Civics Bee to Southern Indiana

The University of Evansville (UE) is proud to host the first-ever Evansville Civics Bee, in partnership with the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership (E-REP) and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, marking the inaugural Civics Bee in Southern Indiana.

This live event, part of the 2026 National Civics Bee, will take place on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in Hyde Hall, Shanklin Theatre.

The National Civics Bee is a nonpartisan, nationwide competition designed to engage middle school students in civics, critical thinking, and community involvement. Students in grades 6-8 are invited to submit a four-paragraph essay proposing a solution to improve their community. Top finalists will advance to a live quiz competition, with prizes including a $5,000 donation to the winning student's school, as well as recognition at the state and national levels. This initiative strengthens civic knowledge while developing writing, public speaking, and problem-solving skills.

"Changing lives and changing the world starts with engaged, informed citizens," said Christopher Pietruszkiewicz, President of the University of Evansville. "By hosting the first-ever Civics Bee in Southern Indiana, we are empowering young learners to recognize the difference they can make in their communities while building the skills and confidence to be engaged, active participants in democracy."

"Hosting the first-ever Civics Bee in Southern Indiana is exactly the kind of unique opportunity that strengthens a region," said Kara Yates, Executive Director of Workforce & Education at E-REP. "When students learn how their communities work, they're more prepared to lead, serve, and improve the place they call home.

"As we approach America's 250th anniversary, we have a powerful opportunity - and responsibility - to reignite civic learning across the country," said Hilary Crow, vice president of civics at the U.S. Chamber Foundation. "Our hope is that the National Civics Bee inspires more schools to prioritize civics education, equipping young people with a deeper understanding of how our government and democracy work - and the essential role they play in strengthening their communities and our nation."
