* Men's basketball drops season finale to SIU

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Three University of Evansville men’s basketball players scored 16 points in Sunday’s regular-season finale that saw the Purple Aces fall to Southern Illinois by a score of 81-67.

AJ Casey, Josh Hughes, and Trent Hundley each scored 16 points. Leif Moeller finished the game with 10 points. Casey registered a team-high 8 boards while Bryce Quinet tallied seven assists. Damien Mayo Jr. scored a team-high 23 points while Prince Aligbe had a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.

“We played very well this weekend being faced with a back-to-back. Our players attacked it head on,” UE head coach David Ragland said. “To win the game we did yesterday in the fashion that we did was big and to have a chance to win in the final minutes today was a positive for us. The heart of our group is encouraging to see.”

Picking up right where he left off from Saturday’s game, AJ Casey knocked down a triple on UE’s opening possession and scored Evansville’s first five points of the game. Five minutes in, a 3-pointer by Damien Mayo Jr. gave SIU its first lead at 8-5. Josh Hughes quickly tied the game with his first 3-pointer of the day.

Five more tie scored led to a 20-20 score heading into the final nine minutes of the half. That is when the Salukis gained control scoring eight in a row to go up 28-20. Casey ended the stretch with a dunk while Leif Moeller converted a bucket to cut the deficit to three at 28-25 inside the 6-minute mark. With 3:25 on the clock, a pair of Hughes free throws made it a 30-27 game.

The defense of the Salukis took over as they held UE scoreless over the final minutes. The Aces missed their final four shots while committing a turnover. SIU’s offense scored the final eight points of the half to open a 38-27 advantage at the half. Casey led all players with 10 points in the opening stanza.

Two SIU free throws gave the Salukis a 13-point lead in their first possession of the second half. Moeller’s second triple of the game ended the scoreless drought as UE would cut the deficit down to nine points. SIU would go back up 47-35 four minutes into the period, but UE continued to fight back. Bryce Quinet got things going with a jumper before Hughes hit a basket and Casey added a 3-point play to make it a 47-42 game inside the 14-minute mark.

Hughes’ second triple got the Aces back within a possession a minute later. Approaching the midway point of the period, regained a 56-50 lead on a Prince Aligbe basket. Following a Hughes jumper, Trent Hundley dialed it up from downtown to cut the gap to a point. With 7:21 left, Southern Illinois extended the lead back up to six points (63-57), but another UE rally quickly tied it. Hundley hit another triple before being fouled on another attempt. He knocked down al three free throw tries to tie the game.

Seconds later, Mayo drained another triple to put SIU back in front and they would enter the final three minutes with a 6-point lead. Turnovers on three consecutive possessions helped SIU push the lead back to ten points – 77-67. The Salukis would finish the day with the 81-67 win and finished the game on a 12-0 run while holding the Aces scoreless for the final 4:36.

For the game, SIU shot 46.9% while holding UE to 42.6%; they also held a 39-28 rebounding tally. Evansville awaits its opponent for the opening game at Arch Madness.

* Aces Take Rubber Match, Clinch Series Against Milwaukee

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  –  The University of Evansville baseball team secured their first series win of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Milwaukee by a score of 4-2 in the rubber match at Charles H. Braun Stadium.

For the second straight day, the Evansville pitching staff was excellent, limiting the Panthers to two runs on seven hits. Kevin Reed (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) got the win, working five strong innings before giving way to Owen Byberg (Barrie, Ontario/Frontier CC). Byberg was dominant, tossing the game's final four frames to secure the save, striking out two without a walk. The right-hander allowed just three singles while lowering his season ERA to a sparkling 1.32. Offensively, six Aces collected hits, while Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) drove in two runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Milwaukee threatened in the first inning, drawing a pair of walks to start the game before a sacrifice bunt put men on second and third with one out. However, Reed was able to work out of the jam, generating a shallow fly out to right field before second baseman Wyatt Pennington (Avon, Ind./Avon) made a sliding play up the middle to record the third out of the inning.

After Reed retired the side in order in the top of the second, the Aces strung together three consecutive singles in the home half of the inning, capped by an RBI single to left field by Ximi Baftiri (Morris, Ill./Morris) to get the scoring started.

Milwaukee got the run back in their next at-bats, but Evansville struck back in the bottom of the third, as Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo./Northeast CC) led off the inning with a double before coming around to score on an RBI single from Longmeier.

The Panthers threatened again in the fifth with leadoff double and would even the score on an RBI single, but Reed limited the damage by stranding runners at second and third to finish his day.

Just as they did in the third, the Evansville lineup responded again, loading the baseswith nobody out. Following a pitching change, the Aces cashed in, with Longmeier delivering a sac fly and Spike Magill (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) driving in another run on a fielder's choice to give Evansville a 4-2 lead.

From that point, Byberg dominated. In the sixth, Byberg induced three fly-outs to work around a one-out single before eliminating another one-out single in the seventh by generating a 6-4-3 double play.

Evansville looked to add insurance in the eighth, with a pair of baserunners reaching via HBP. However, they were left stranded.

Byberg slammed the door, however, retiring the side in order in the ninth to pick up the save and give the Aces the series win.

UP NEXT
Evansville plays the first of nine consecutive road games on Tuesday, taking on SEMO in Cape Girardeau. First Pitch is set for 3 PM.

* Casey's triple at the buzzer gives UE win over Valparaiso

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – AJ Casey banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the University of Evansville men’s basketball team an 80-79 victory over Valparaiso on Saturday at the Ford Center.

Casey completed the night with a career-high 37 points and 11 rebounds. He was one of three Purple Aces players to record a double-double in the game. Josh Hughes finished with 10 points and 10 boards while Leif Moeller completed the game with 10 points and 11 assists. Four Valpo scorers reached double figures with Owen Dease leading the way with 17.

“This was a huge win for us on Senior Day. Our guys battled all day and we were able to finish it off,” UE head coach David Ragland said. “AJ was huge for us today but everyone performed when we needed them.”

Valparaiso took a 5-0 lead out of the gate before Evansville got on the board with a Josh Hughes triple. Converting four of their opening five attempts, the Beacons opened a 10-3 lead in the first three minutes. Bryce Quinet hit a triple to cut the deficit to 10-6.

Following two more Valpo baskets, the Purple Aces rallied with an 8-0 stretch to tie the score at 14-14 with 12:56 on the clock. UE converted six of its eight field goal attempts to make its way back into the game. A Justus McNair 3-pointer solidified a 22-16 edge just past the midway point of the period before Leif Moeller hit his first triple of the day to cut the VU lead back down to three.

Over the next seven minutes, the score remained within two possessions. A pair of AJ Casey free throws made it a 31-29 game entering the final four minutes while the Beacons countered with a 9-2 run over the next three minutes to take their largest lead of the half at 40-31. Casey added a 3-point play in the final minute to get his team back within six while Valparaiso completed the first-half scoring with two free throws to take a 42-34 lead at the half. Casey led all scorers with 17 in the half.

Evansville closed the gap in the opening moments of the second half when a pair of Bryce Quinet free throws cut the deficit to 44-40. At the 16:36 mark, the Beacons knocked down a pair of free throws to go up 50-45. Josh Hughes took over with a layup and a triple to tie the score. Following a bucket by VU, Alex Hemenway hit a 3-pointer to give the Aces their first lead at 53-52 with 14:32 left in the game.

Four minutes later, UE held a 59-58 advantage. Kaia Berridge hit his first basket of the game to open a 7-0 run that put the Aces on top 66-58. After the Beacons cut the gap down to four points, Leif Moeller’s 3-point play reestablished the 8-point edge (73-65) with 4:45 on the clock. That is when the Beacons made their move recording seven in a row to make it a 1-point game as the contest went into its final two minutes.

A Casey free throw ended the stretch, but a 3-point play by McNair gave the Beacons a 75-74 lead with 1:37 remaining. The Beacons went up by three with 43 ticks left before Casey hit a triple with 20 seconds on the clock to tie the score. The Beacons retook the lead with just three seconds left, but UE had one final chance and Casey took advantage banking in a triple to give UE the win.

The Aces shot 47.2% in the game while holding the Beacons to 43.4%. UE also had a 32-29 rebounding edge. On Sunday, the regular season comes to an end with a 3 p.m. game against Southern Illinois.

* Softball travels to North Alabama for 3-game series

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – In its final weekend before the start of Missouri Valley Conference play, the University of Evansville softball team travels to North Alabama for a 3-game series. The Purple Aces and Lions meet up for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday with Sunday’s finale set for 12 p.m.

Evansville split its four games last weekend in Conway, Arkansas. UE earned wins over Central Arkansas and defending Atlantic 10 champion Saint Louis. Emma McDonald batted .444 over the weekend and was named the MVC Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday. McDonald scored the game-winning run against the Billikens.

Friday’s 5-4 win over UCA saw the Aces overcome an early 4-0 deficit to take the win. Maliyah Wilkins and Morgan Adams helped UE cut the deficit in half in the third inning before Brooke Voss and Taylor Howe scored in the fifth to tie the score. In the top of the seventh, Howe hit a leadoff double and would score the game-winner on an Adams single.

Sunday saw UE win a wild 12-11 contest against Saint Louis. Brooke Voss put together one of the top efforts of her career going 4-5 with three RBI, two runs, and a walk in the victory.

UE led 4-0 before the Billikens came back to tie the game. Helped by Angela Valentine’s 2-run double in the fourth, UE went back up 8-4. Saint Louis battled back with a 7-run fifth frame to jump in front at 11-8. Evansville battled back to tie the score before winning in the 8th. McDonald hit a 1-out triple before scoring on Voss’ fourth hit of the game.

North Alabama opens the weekend at 10-4 following a 4-1 showing at last weekend’s South Alabama Invitational. They earned two wins over Loyola before defeating West Georgia and UT Martin.

FLORENCE, Ala. – Following a quick start in Saturday’s opener, the University of Evansville softball team dropped two contests to North Alabama to open its final non-conference weekend.

Game 1 – UNA 5, UE 3

North Alabama scored in each of the final four innings to rally from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Purple Aces by a 5-3 final in Saturday’s opener.

Brooke Voss posted the first hit of the day in the top of the first before the Aces jumped on the board with a single run in the second. Morgan Adams led off with a double with Dori Brown coming in to pinch run. That brought Niki Bode to the plate and she sent the first pitch into right center field for a double to bring in Brown.

Emma McDonald opened the top of the third with a double to left center and crossed the plate on an infield single by Taylor Howe to extend the lead to 2-0. The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly followed by a Bayleigh Rouse solo home run to tie the game at 2-2. North Alabama added its third run of the game in the fourth.

With one out in the top of the fifth, Voss tied the game with a solo home run to right center. UNA pounced back with solo runs in the fifth and sixth to retake the advantage. UE was unable to get a baserunner in the final two frames as the Lions clinched the 5-3 win.

Howe and Voss each went 2-3 in the game to account for four of UE’s eight hits. Kate Ridgway made the start and allowed five runs in six innings of work.

Game 2 – UNA 8, UE 0 (5 innings)

Following a scoreless 2 ½ innings, the Lions scored eight runs in the next three frames to complete the day with an 8-0 victory in five innings. Lion starting pitcher Katie Simon tossed a no-hitter in the game as UE had two baserunners.

North Alabama opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Briley Dover hit a 3-run home run to left field to put the Lions on top as they scored four in the inning. In the fifth, they clinched the victory with four more runs to take the 8-0 triumph.

Tomorrow, UE looks to take the third game of the series, which is set for a 12 p.m. first pitch.

* UE Announces $2 Million Planned Gift That Will Fund New Endowed Chair in Chemistry

Leaving a powerful legacy of excellence and opportunity at the University of Evansville (UE), Evansville native Barbara J. Kolb Price has documented a $2 million bequest intention to establish an endowed faculty chair in the University's Robert and Judy Decker Wargel Department of Chemistry.

Funded through a planned estate gift, the $2 million endowment will support the retention of distinguished faculty, encourage innovation in the classroom, and elevate student success and achievement within the department. The endowment will provide sustained support for faculty-led student research initiatives in chemistry, innovative curricular experiences, and the enhancement of laboratory instrumentation and resources. This gift helps honor UE's commitment to scientific inquiry and student success by connecting chemistry to real-world challenges in health, industry and the environment.

Price graduated from Mater Dei High School and then Evansville College (UE) in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. Guided by a strong foundation in Evansville, she then earned a Master of Arts in Chemistry Education from the University of Chicago and a Master of Science in Management from Purdue University.
