* Softball completes opening weekend with 6-2 victory

MACON, Ga. – Sunday’s Heart of Georgia Classic finale saw the University of Evansville softball team completed the weekend with a solid 6-2 victory over Maine.

Jess Willsey and Maliyah Wilkins recorded two hits apiece to pace the offense while Kate Ridgway and Alexis Tucker got the job done in the circle. Most impressive on the offensive side was the fact that all six UE runs scored with two outs. Ridgway picked up her second victory of the weekend going 5 1/3 innings with one run scoring on just two hits. She added seven strikeouts. Tucker threw the final 1 2/3 frames with a single run scoring.

Following a scoreless first inning, the Purple Aces opened the scoring with a 2-run bottom of the second. Sydney Kalonihea was hit by a pitch while Brooke Voss doubled to put two runners in scoring position. With two outs, Taylor Howe struck out but reached on a dropped third strike. That gave Willsey a chance and her 2-run single broke the scoreless tie. One batter later, Wilkins singled to bring in Howe to make it a 3-0 game.

The Black Bears scored their first run of the day in the top of the third before the Aces broke through in the fourth. Howe scored her second run of the game when Niki Bode reached on a Maine error. The bases remained loaded for Kalonihea, who was hit by a pitch to tack on the fifth run of the day.

Brooke Voss completed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth when she drew a bases loaded walk to score pinch runner Dori Brown. One more Black Bear run scored in the seventh, but the Aces completed the day with the 6-2 win.

* Aces complete second day at Heart of Georgia Classic

MACON, Ga. – Day two of the Heart of Georgia Classic saw the University of Evansville softball team put up a pair of strong efforts in a pair of losses by a combined three runs. The Purple Aces battled North Carolina A&T in a 9-inning 7-6 contest to open play before coming up just short in a 4-2 decision to Mercer.

Game 1 – NC A&T 7, UE 6 (9 innings)

Saturday’s opener saw the Purple Aces answer every shot taken by North Carolina A&T. The Aggies opened the scoring with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first. Evansville came right back to tie the game in the second with a pair of unearned runs. Niki Bode scored UE’s first run of the day on an error while Emma McDonald tied the score when she scored on a wild pitch.

Kate Ridgway kept the Aggies off the board until the bottom of the fifth when a single run put them back in front. One inning later, it was Eliza Piggott who knotted the score with a solo home run. It was her second long ball of the year. Riding the momentum from the game-tying run, the Aces took their first lead in the top of the seventh when Morgan Adams scored on a NC A&T error. Unfortunately, the Aggies came through with the tying run in the bottom of the seventh on a 2-out single.

Heading into the 8th, it was Evansville regaining the lead when Taylor Howe came through with a go-ahead 2-out single to bring in Brooke Voss. North Carolina A&T matched the run to send the game into the 9th frame. Morgan Adams’ sacrifice fly plated Addyson Leonard to give UE a 6-5 advantage as the contest headed to the bottom of the 9th. With two outs, a single by the Aggies tied the game before a walk-off double gave them the 7-6 win.

UE completed the game with eight hits as Jess Willsey went 2-4 while adding a walk. Six different players scored a run in a balanced offensive attack. Ridgway threw five innings with three runs scoring. She struck out seven batters. Gracie Hollingsworth went the final 3 2/3 innings with four runs, two earned, crossing the plate.

Game 2 – Mercer 4, UE 2

One day after the teams combined to score 30 runs, Evansville and Mercer battled once again with a 2-run fifth inning by the Bears proving to be the difference. Evansville scored the opening run of the game when a groundout by Maliyah Wilkins brought in Taylor Howe in the top of the first. Single runs by Mercer in the 2nd and 4th frames gave them a 2-1 edge.

Continuing a strong day at the plate, Howe helped the Aces tie the score at 2-2 in the top half of the fifth. Emma McDonald reached on a 1-out walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Howe came through with a double to center field to knot the score.

The Bears came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain a 4-2 lead. Evansville did its best to fight back as Morgan Adams reached on a single in the 6th while McDonald added a single in the 7th, however, the Bears avoided any further damage to take the win.

In her first start of the season, Alexis Tucker threw 4 2/3 innings with four runs, three earned, scoring by Mercer. She allowed seven hits while striking out three batters. Sophia Otten threw a scoreless 1 1/3 frames and gave up two hits. UE accumulated seven hits with Howe going a perfect 3-3 with a run and RBI. Adams added two hits.

Opening weekend wraps up Sunday with a 9 a.m. CST contest against Maine.

* Kate Ridgway tosses no-hitter as softball wins opener

MACON, Ga. – Friday’s opening day of the 2026 season was an exciting one for the University of Evansville softball team. The opener saw sophomore Kate Ridgway toss a no-hitter against Maine while Purple Aces head coach Bailey Dillender and her staff picked up their first win with the program.

Game two of the day saw the Aces battle to the finish before defending Southern Conference Champion Mercer took a 16-14 victory in a wild 8-inning contest.

“It was great to finally play someone not ourselves. Kate was excellent in the circle this morning and i loved watching our kids compete their tails off in game two versus Mercer,” Coach Dillender said. “I'm not big on moral victories, but there were so many positive things to take from Day 1.”

Game 1 – UE 4, Maine 1

Kate Ridgway struck out eight batters and opened the season with her first collegiate no-hitter as the Aces took down Maine by a final score of 4-1. Jess Willsey paced the offense with two hits including a home run and a double. Maliyah Wilkins led the team with two RBI while Keghan Pye also had a run batted in.

It did not take long for UE to get on the board as Willsey opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. Kate Ridgway had a strong start to the morning, striking out four Black Bear batters in the first two innings.

Pye double the Aces lead in the bottom half of the second. Niki Bode reached on a leadoff walk before advancing to third on a Brooke Voss sacrifice followed by a groundout. That brought Pye to the plate who rose up to the occasions with a single to score Bode. Maine took advantage of two walks and a UE error to plate a run in the top of the third.

The game remained at 2-1 in favor of UE until the bottom of the sixth. Eliza Piggott hit a leadoff double with the Aces proceeding to load the bases with no outs. Shortly after, Wilkins came through with a huge 2-run single to center field to give Evansville some breathing room. Ridgway took care of business from there, striking out the final batter in the seventh to clinch the win.

Game 2 – Mercer 16, UE 14 (8 innings)

While Friday’s opener was a defensive battle, the afternoon contest against Mercer saw the offenses erupt in a big way. The Bears wrapped up the game with 16 runs on 16 hits while the Aces plated 14 runs on 10 hits while eight batters reached on a walk. Morgan Adams, Jess Willsey, and Eliza Piggott each hit home runs for UE. Willsey led the Aces with three hits while Piggott was 2-3 with four runs scored. Adams recorded four RBI while Brooke Voss added three.

Things went the way of the Bears in the opening frame as they tagged UE starter Gracie Hollingsworth for five runs, four earned, in 1/3 of an inning. Evansville got on the board in the top of the second when Emma McDonald singled in Piggott. The Bears matched the run in the bottom of the second to establish a 6-1 advantage.

Willsey’s solo shot in the third got her team within four runs before the Evansville offense erupted for eight runs in the fourth. Voss got things going with a 2-run triple before scoring on a wild pitch. Willsey followed her home run in the third with a RBI single in the fourth. Adams came through with a 3-run homer while Piggott added UE’s third long ball of the game with a solo shot that gave the Aces a 10-6 lead.

Two solo home runs highlighted a 4-run bottom of the fourth for Mercer who tied the score at 10-10. Another long ball by the Bears came in a 2-run fifth that extended the lead to 12-10.

Evansville got back on track in the top of the sixth as a 3-run inning put them back in front. Adams added an RBI single while another scored on a fielding error. McDonald’s fielder’s choice with two outs scored Voss to put UE up 13-12. Down to their final three outs, the Bears tied the game on a leadoff home run to force extra innings.

Voss’ 2-out double brought in Adams for the go-ahead run, but Mercer hit a 3-run walkoff home run to take the 16-14 victory. UE opens Saturday with a 9 a.m. game against North Carolina A&T before taking on the Bears at 2 p.m. CST.

* Moeller ties career scoring high in overtime contest at Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Freshman Leif Moeller matched his career scoring mark with 26 points to lead the University of Evansville men’s basketball team in a 70-63 overtime loss to Valparaiso at The ARC on Friday evening.

Moeller, who also scored 26 last month against Bradley, was 8-of-13 from the field while going an impressive 5-for-6 from outside. He added five rebounds. AJ Casey completed the game with 16 points and a team-high seven boards while Josh Hughes registered 10 points. Three Beacons reached double figures with Owen Dease posting 18 points while Justus McNair and Carter Hopoi finished with 16 and 10 points, respectively.

“We competed and guys did a good job responding after being down. We came out and popped them in the first few minutes of the second half and played the right way,” UE head coach David Ragland said after the game. “I told the group that I do not question their heart or fight. There are just a few areas that we can control and be better at.”

Over the opening four minutes of the contest, the Beacons took a 7-4 lead as they hit an early 3-pointer. Trent Hundley hit a jumper to get the Aces within one point before the Beacons went on a run to take their largest lead of the half. Up 10-8, the Beacons scored seven in a row to open a 17-9 lead inside of the 11-minute mark.

Josh Hughes hit a triple on the other end before a second-chance basket by AJ Casey made it a 4-point game. With 3:45 left in the period, Valpo took advantage of an offensive board to extend the lead back to seven points at 25-18. Casey responded with a dunk before a missed Beacon shot lead to a Leif Moeller triple that cut the deficit to a pair.

The teams exchanged triples in the final two minutes with the Beacons taking a 28-26 halftime lead. Casey led all scorers with nine points.

Evansville’s offense came out firing on all cylinders to open the second half. Moeller knocked down his third triple of the contest to give UE its first lead, but the Beacons regained a 30-29 lead o the ensuing possession. Alex Hemenway, who went 0-for-4 from range in the first half, hit his first long ball to open an 11-0 run that gave UE a 40-30 lead with 16:25 remaining in the game.

Just over a minute later, another trey by Moeller pushed the UE lead to 45-32. His triple capped a 7-for-7 start to the half by the Aces. A free throw by Moeller with 14:33 on the clock solidified a 46-34 UE lead. That is when the Beacons began their comeback with a 9-0 run over the ensuing four minutes to cut the gap to 46-43 heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.

Following another triple by Moeller that doubled the lead to six points (49-43), Valparaiso got it rolling once again with a 12-0 rally to go back in front at 55-49 at the 6:55 mark. * Evansville Promise Neighborhood Welcomes Ten New Community Partners, Expanding Collective Impact

The Evansville Promise Neighborhood (EPN) welcomes the first cohort of new program partners, an expansion that strengthens collaboration, deepens community impact, and creates new pathways of opportunity for children and families across the Promise Neighborhood.

The EPN network now includes 33 partner organizations working together across the community, a growth that reflects strong alignment around the students, families, and six schools that make up the Promise Neighborhood.

"We're excited to expand our partner network and deeply grateful to the first cohort of program partners that have come on board," said Derek McKillop, Director of the Evansville Promise Neighborhood. "Their engagement speaks to the momentum behind this work and the power of partnership."

Pipeline 2 is focused on strengthening family engagement, improving access, and exploring shared incentives and solutions to help students stay connected to their school and be present in the classroom every day.

Pipeline 3 is bringing college and career conversations directly to families through mobile, community-based engagement, supporting multigenerational planning for the future. Pipeline 4, with a focus on health and wellness, is currently working to expand access to fresh fruits and vegetables while building knowledge around healthy choices through family and community engagement events and after-school programs.
