* UE Announces 2026 MLK Day Lectureship

The University of Evansville (UE) will host the 2026 William G. & Rose Mays MLK Day Lectureship on Monday, January 19, welcoming renowned journalist and scholar Dr. Jelani Cobb as the keynote speaker. The event will take place in Eykamp Hall within Ridgway University Center, with doors opening at 3:30 p.m. and the program beginning at 4:00 p.m.

This year’s Lectureship focuses on the theme “Servant. Strategist. Change Agent. The Anatomy of Transformative Leadership.” The event is designed to help the campus and community reflect on what strong, positive leadership looks like today. Each year, UE uses this Lectureship to bring important voices to campus who help expand conversations about civil rights, fairness, and how we can work together to create meaningful change. The Center for Inclusive Excellence leads this effort and supports the programming that surrounds it.

Dr. Cobb’s work on race, history, democracy, and social change has established him as one of the most respected voices in contemporary public discourse. His participation in the 2026 Lectureship offers the campus and greater Evansville community an opportunity to explore transformative leadership in both historical and modern contexts.

The Lectureship is open to the public, and seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional details about the event and the full 2026 MLK Celebration schedule can be found here.

* Casey and Turnbull lead UE against UNI

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – For the fourth time in five Missouri Valley Conference games, AJ Casey reached double figures to pace the University of Evansville men’s basketball team in a 62-48 loss to Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon at the Ford Center.

Casey recorded a game-high 17 points hitting seven of his nine field goal tries. He tied for the team high with five boards. Connor Turnbull registered 12 points while blocking two Panther shots. Ben Schwieger led a balanced UNI attack with 14 points. Seven different Panther players scored at least six points.

“Northern Iowa is a really good team who is similar to Illinois State. They are one of the top defensive teams in the nation and that poses difficulties for any opponent,” UE head coach David Ragland said. “I thought we did a really good job defensively against their top two scorers but did not do as well against their supporting cast. Once you dig a hole like we did in the first half, it is hard to climb out of.”

Connor Turnbull tied the game at 2-2 just over two minutes in before the Panthers converted back-to-back triples to take an 8-2 advantage Following a 1-for-7 start from the field, AJ Casey converted consecutive baskets to cut the UNI lead to 11-6. With just under 13 minutes left in the half, the fourth consecutive 3-pointer by the Panthers extended their lead to 14-6.

Casey’s third basket of the game made it a 6-point game at 14-8 with 11:35 showing on the clock. The defense for the Panthers took over at that point holding the Aces off the scoreboard for the next 5:32 while the offense scored nine in a row to take its largest lead at 23-8. Evansville missed four shots during the stretch while committing five turnovers.

Leif Moeller’s first basket of the afternoon ended the cold streak while Turnbull and Casey added field goals in a 6-0 spurt that cut the deficit to single digits (23-14) with 4:39 remaining in the period. UNI quickly responded with three triples over the next two minutes to extend its lead to 32-14. UE posted the next four points before a basket at the buzzer sent the Panthers into the break with a 34-18 edge. Over the first 20 minutes, UNI was 8-for-15 from downtown while the Aces were 0-for-6. Casey had 10 of Evansville’s 18 first-half tallies.

Baskets by Turnbull and Moeller in the opening two minutes of the final period cut the gap to 12 points, but another run by UNI gave them their first 20-point lead at 44-24 inside of the 14-minute mark. UE did not give up and worked to chip away in the final minutes. Alex Hemenway’s triple got the Aces within 13 (52-39) with 6:29 left, but the Panthers went back up by 18 before completing the day with a 62-48 win.

The Panthers shot 45.8% for the game while UE shot 42.2% including 11-of-22 in the second half. UNI had a 33-25 rebounding lead.

Another home game is on tap Wednesday when the Aces welcome Murray State at 7 p.m.

* Women's Basketball Elevates Molly Davis to Assistant Coach

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Head Coach Robyn Scherr and the University of Evansville women's basketball program have elevated Molly Davis from Graduate Assistant to Assistant Coach, it was announced Monday morning. Davis joined the program as a Graduate Assistant ahead of the 2024-25 season after an illustrious collegiate playing career at Central Michigan and Iowa.

"I am very excited to announce that Molly Davis has been promoted to Assistant Coach for our program," said Scherr. "She has done a tremendous job as our Graduate Assistant, and it was my goal after last season to find a way to keep her with our program. She is a hard worker, and her humility and willingness to do whatever it takes to help our program has impressed me tremendously. She has a great mind for the game and has provided a lot of valuable input in her time with us. I am thrilled that we can keep her here at UE!"

"I'm extremely thankful to Coach Robyn for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to continue to grow within this program," said Davis. "I'm excited to keep investing in our team, our culture, and the daily work it takes to build something special!"

As a player, Davis played an integral role in helping Iowa to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA National Championship Game. In two seasons with the Hawkeyes, Davis appeared in 69 games while starting 29 games, including 27 starts in 2023-24.  As a fifth-year senior, Davis scored 5.9 PPG with 3.0 assists per game, helping the Hawkeyes to a 34-5 record and a second consecutive NCAA National Championship Game appearance.

Prior to her time in Iowa City, Davis was a three-time All-MAC selection at Central Michigan. Across three seasons with the Chippewas, she started all 81 games she appeared in, scoring 17.8 PPG with 4.3 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game. In 2020-21, Davis posted a career-best 20.8 PPG (23rd in the country) on 49% shooting from the field while leading the Chippewas to a MAC Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. As a freshman in 2019-20, Davis helped Central Michigan to a MAC regular season championship.

* Aces fall in New Year's Day contest at ISU

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State forward Chase Walker scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Redbirds to a 73-47 win over the University of Evansville men’s basketball team on New Year’s Day inside CEFCU Arena.

Bryce Quinet was the leading scorer for the Purple Aces with 13 points. He was a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown while adding four boards and a pair of assists. AJ Casey wrapped up the game with eight points and seven caroms while Alex Hemenway scored seven. Walker was one of three ISU players to reach double figures. Ty’Reek Coleman and Landon Wolf totaled 12 apiece.

“We gave Illinois State too many opportunities today and did not look like ourselves at all,” UE head coach David Ragland explained after the game. “They (ISU) are playing with a lot of confidence and have a veteran group who have played together for a long time. As good as ISU is, you cannot turn the ball over 23 times on the road and win.”

A 3-pointer on the Redbirds’ first possession opened a 7-0 stretch to begin the game. The ISU defense held the Purple Aces to a 0-for-4 start from the floor along with forcing three turnovers. AJ Casey got UE on the board with a free throw before Bryce Quinet knocked down a triple to make it an 8-4 game.

After an Illinois State score, the Aces utilized a 15-4 run to take their first lead of the game. Alex Hemenway connected on a triple before a pair of Leif Moeller free throws tied the game at 10-10. Following another ISU score to put them back on top, the Aces continued to fight back. Following a Moeller jumper that tied the game, Casey’s field goal at the 12:26 mark put UE on top for the first time.

Keishon Porter followed with a basket before Casey hit from downtown to solidify a 19-14 lead inside the 11-minute mark. UE made six consecutive field goals during the rally. Just as quickly as the Aces made their run, the Redbirds countered with 12 points in a row as they retook a 26-19 edge. Their defense held UE to 0-6 with four turnovers during a scoreless stretch of over four minutes.

Hemenway got UE back on the board with a pair of free throws to make it a 5-point game, but the Redbirds were just getting started. Over the final six minutes of the period, ISU outscored the Aces by a 20-7 margin to take a 46-28 halftime lead. Chase Walker had a game-high 16 points in the opening stanza for the Redbirds while Casey led the Aces with eight.

Josh Hughes converted an early basket to complete a 5-0 run to begin the second half. Unfortunately, that is as close as the Aces would get. Holding a 52-35 advantage inside of 15 minutes remaining, Illinois State embarked on a 15-0 run to take their largest lead at 67-35 with 7:26 remaining. In total, it was a 21-2 rally. UE missed eight consecutive field goals while turning the ball over six times during the scoring drought.

Connor Turnbull’s second-chance basket ended the stretch, but the deficit was too much to overcome with ISU completing the game with the 73-47 victory. The Redbirds shot 46.6% in the victory while the Aces shot 31.4%. The shooting mark was the lowest since the Aces shot 30.0% in the season opener at #1 Purdue. UE completed the day with a 37-34 edge on the glass.

On Sunday, the Aces return to the Ford Center to face Northern Iowa at 3 p.m.

* Aces Dominate Valpo for First MVC Win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women's basketball team picked up their first MVC win of the season in dominant fashion on Saturday afternoon, dispatching Valparaiso 66-46 inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse. The win was the Aces' largest in MVC play since March 2, 2017.

It was a balanced offensive effort for Evansville, with 10 Aces finding the scoring column and six Aces scoring six or more points. Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights) led the way with 12 and snagged a career-high 13 rebounds to record her second career double-double. Mireia Mustaros (Barcelona, Spain/Ins Argentona) had her highest-scoring performance as an Ace, scoring 11 points to go with six rebounds. Elle Snyder (Latrobe, Penn./Greater Latrobe) enjoyed a strong afternoon with nine points on 3-for-6 shooting from three-point range while adding eight rebounds and four assists.

Mustaros came out of the gates hot, scoring the Aces' first five points of the game, while a three-pointer by Sydney Huber (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mount Vernon) and a layup by Logan Luebbers Palmer (Union, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) gave the Aces a 10-3 lead and forced an early timeout by the Beacons. Valpo battled back to make it 14-12 at the 2:51 mark in the opening quarter, but another run, highlighted by a three by Snyder and four points from Runner, gave the Aces a 21-12 lead heading into the second quarter.

Evansville's run continued to begin the second period, with a three from Jelena Savic (Melbourne, Australia/Kurunjang Secondary College) and buckets by Georgia Ferguson (Waterloo, Ontario/Cairine Wilson Secondary School) and Huber ballooned the lead to 16. The Aces continued to control things for the remainder of the half, heading into break with a 37-24 advantage.

Strong defense marked the third quarter for the Aces as they held the Beacons to seven points, matching a season-best, and kept Valpo off the scoreboard for the final 3:51 of the period.

Evansville opened up their largest lead of the day with 4:48 to go in the fourth quarter, as another three from Snyder made it 61-35. The Aces cruised from there, taking home a decisive 66-46 victory.

Valpo's 46 points was the lowest mark allowed by the Aces this season, while the Beacons' 27.1% shooting percentage was the lowest allowed by the Evansville defense this year.

Evansville is off until Thursday, when they hit the road next to take on Southern Illinois in Carbondale. Tip-off is set for 6 PM.

* AJ Casey scores career-high 21 points at Bradley

PEORIA, Ill. – Coming in off the bench, AJ Casey scored a career-high 21 points on Monday evening to pace the University of Evansville men’s basketball team in a 76-68 setback to Bradley inside Carver Arena.

Casey was 8-of-11 from the field on the way to his career outing. His previous high of 14 points came in the season opener at top-ranked Purdue. He added six boards and a pair of assists. Josh Hughes recorded 14 points and a team-high 7 caroms while Bryce Quinet recorded 11 points. Jaquan Johnson paced Bradley with 22 points.

“Basketball is a game of runs. I thought we did a great job of punching first and setting the tone,” UE head men’s basketball coach David Ragland said. “We did a great job with the scouts and got some stops and finished the first half the right way. Early in the second half, we had some good looks but shots were just not falling. Once we got them to fall we made a run and battled to the finish. This is a tough league especially on the road and we need to learn how to finish these games.”

Evansville was on fire to open the night converting five of its first six attempts to take a 13-0 lead just over three minutes into the game. Josh Hughes and Alex Hemenway knocked down 3-pointers to open the game while Leif Moeller added a basket during the run. Hughes’ second triple capped the run. UE’s defense held the Braves to a 0-for-6 start from the field.

Bradley made its way back, utilizing an 11-0 run over the next five minutes to make it a 2-point game. The Braves held the Aces scoreless for a stretch of 5:37 as they closed the gap. AJ Casey ended the stretch as Kaia Berridge found him for a dunk. As the half reached its midway point, BU cut the deficit to 15-14 before UE answered with four in a row. Berridge found Casey for another slam to complete the run.

Up 26-25 entering the last five minutes, Hughes’ fourth triple of the contest was followed by a Bryce Quinet jumper that made it a 31-24 game. The Braves closed over the final moments to make it a 35-31 game at the half. Hughes led all players with 14 points in the opening stanza.

Out of the break, the Braves took their first lead at 38-36. Holding UE to a 0-for-12 start, BU outscored the Aces by a 13-1 margin to take their first lead of the night at 44-36. Casey’s 3-point play got UE back on track before Hemenway’s second triple made it a 44-42 game with 13:32 remaining.

Two minutes later, Quinet connected his first triple of the night to put UE back in front at 48-47. Following a 3-pointer by Bradley, Hemenway drained another from downtown, his third of the game, to give UE a 51-50 edge heading into the final 10 minutes. With 8:39 remaining, Keishon Porter’s alley-oop put Evansville in front at 55-52. That is when the Braves made their run scoring seven in a row to jump in front at 59-55.

Quinet added two free throws inside of five minutes left to knot the score at 61-61. Bradley countered with four in a row and would slowly add to the lead before finishing the game with a 76-68 victory.

The Braves had a slight shooting advantage for the night at 40.6%-40.3% while completing the game with a 41-39 edge on the boards. UE remains on the road to face Illinois State on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m.
