Employee Volunteers Needed- Winter on Walnut- December 3
|
|
Be Part of the Magic – Volunteer for Winter on Walnut! Hi Everyone, I hope you’re doing well! Each year, the Student Activities Board (SAB) brings some of our favorite campus traditions to life. This semester, we’ve already celebrated an amazing Homecoming Block Party—and now it’s time to look forward to Winter on Walnut! Winter on Walnut will take place on Wednesday, December 3, from 4:00–9:00 PM in the outdoor areas surrounding Ridgway University Center. This beloved tradition typically welcomes 500+ members of our campus community each year, including students, families, faculty, and staff. To make Winter on Walnut a success, we need your help! We’re looking for employee volunteers to support the Winter Holiday Village, which features:
- 6 fun games
- 2 novelty attractions
- Multiple selfie spots and interactive activities (think carnival or arcade vibes!)
We need at least 6 volunteers per hour to help run the games so that SAB members—who usually staff these stations—can enjoy the event they worked so hard to create. If you’re able to lend a hand, please sign up for a time slot here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E4EABA82EA4FECF8-60302540-winter#/ Thank you for helping us make this tradition magical for our campus community! We are looking for employee volunteers to serve up some food, bus tables, greet students, collect trash, and maybe even wash dishes for this event. Volunteers are being asked to arrive around 8:30 p.m. that evening for “pancake training” so we’re ready for the students in time. Your presence will help make this tradition happen for hundreds of our hungry Aces. This is an expression of care, support, and appreciation for our students.

UE Biology/Environmental Science Student & Alums Publish Article with Biology Professor
|
|
Congratulations
Congratulations to UE biology alum Brad Schulte, former UE ES alumni Evan Book, Spencer Willem, Branndon Castellano, and current ES major Alyssia Faulkner for their publication in the Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society. Their research, entitled, “Browsing by deer and a recalcitrant layer of pawpaw
(Asimina triloba) cause increased sapling mortality and decreased sapling growth in an ancient urban forest,” has been a decade-long research study at Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve guided by Dr. Cris G. Hochwender. This D1 research demonstrated that by creating a recalcitrant layer of pawpaw, browsing by deer has indirectly exacerbated the negative effect that deer had on canopy regeneration. Although ancient forests like Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve provide aspirational goals for managers of secondary forests, this urban ancient forest must itself be managed to prevent the negative consequences of browsing that will otherwise diminish its quality.
This publication is the second published manuscript in a collaboration between Dr. Cris Hochwender and Wesselman Nature Society. While faculty publication success is encouraging, faculty in the Biology Department and ES program are more encouraged that the research projects associated with undergraduate students has been brought to fruition through a peer-reviewed publication in such a well-regarded journal! The Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society is the oldest botanical journal in the Americas. |

Aces defeat Oregon State in Paradise Jam opener
|
|
SAINT THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands– Four players scored in double figures on Friday evening as the University of Evansville men’s basketball team defeated Oregon State by a final score of 73-69 in the Paradise Jam opener. With the victory, the Purple Aces advance to face Akron on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. CST for a chance to advance to the championship game.
In the first meeting between the teams since the 1989 NCAA Tournament, it was Josh Hughes leading the way with the third double-double of his career and second of the season. He scored a season-high 16 points while grabbing a career-best 12 boards. Bryce Quinet tallied a career-best 15 points while adding four caroms, three assists, and two steals. He was 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
Leif Moeller picked up his first collegiate double figure contest. He scored 14 points while Connor Turnbull finished the game with ten. Noah Amenhauser led Oregon state with 17 points while Josiah Lake II registered 16.
“This was a complete team win – everybody contributed from start to finish,” UE head men’s basketball coach David Ragland said after the win. “Oregon State went on several runs to make it close down the stretch, but I am proud of how we responded. This is a huge confidence builder for our entire squad.”
Connor Turnbull’s 3-point play capped off a 5-0 start to the night. Following a triple by Oregon State, Leif Moeller connected from downtown to push the advantage to five points once again. Just over six minutes into the contest, a pair of free throws gave the Beavers their first lead at 11-10.
It took just a few second for the Aces to retake the lead as a drive by Bryce Quinet put UE up 12-11. As the half approached its midway point, Josh Hughes connected from downtown to give UE a 19-13 advantage. After a triple by OSU, Evansville scored the next six points to take their largest lead of the period at 25-16 with 7:13 remaining. Quinet drained all four free throw tries during the stretch.
Over the final sequence of the half, Oregon State slowly cut into the deficit. It was the defense that made the difference for the Beavers down the stretch. After UE converted 9 of its first 15 shots to open the game, the Aces hit just one of their final 10 attempts. OSU did not fare much better. After going 5-for-17 during the first 12 minutes of the game, the Beavers hit five of their final 13 tries.
The late rally by OSU saw them cut the deficit to just two points at the break – 30-28. Evansville had five players with five points or more in the opening 20 minutes while Josiah Lake II had 10 in the first half for the Beavers.
Out of the break, Oregon State grabbed its largest lead of the night. Making five out of six attempts, the Beavers opened a 38-32 lead with 15:52 on the clock. OSU held the Aces to a 1-for-7 start to the second half. Things quickly swung back Evansville’s way. A 6-minute rally saw UE outscore the Beavers by a 20-3 margin to take a 52-41 lead inside of the 10-minute mark.
Hughes got it going with a layup and two free throws before a Trent Hudley triple put UE on top at 39-38. Quinet followed with a layup to add two more to the lead. Oregon State responded with a triple to tie the score at 41-41 before the Aces got it rolling once again. Leif Moeller drained his second triple to open what would be an 11-0 run. AJ Casey finished the stretch with a layup to make it a 52-41 game.
Oregon State held UE to 1-for-9 from the field over the ensuing three minutes while outscoring the Aces by a 17-8 tally to get back within a pair at 60-58. Moeller quickly hit a layup to push the lead back to four before Quinet added four more to make it a 66-58 game with 2:28 left in the game. The Beavers rallied to get within three points on multiple occasions in the final minute before UE finished with the 4-point win.
Evansville finished the game shooting 40.0% while OSU completed the evening at 37.3%. Both teams finished with 34 rebounds. The largest advantage of the night for the Aces was its bench production. UE had 24 points off the bench while Oregon State had 12. Next up for UE is a contest against Akron on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. CST. |

Casey approaches double-double at Paradise Jam
|
|
SAINT THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands– AJ Casey was one of three double figure scorers for the University of Evansville men’s basketball team in Sunday’s 97-59 defeat to Akron in the semifinals of the Paradise Jam.
UE will face the College of Charleston in Monday evening’s 3rd-place game at 4:30 p.m. CST.
“Akron is a very talented team and program that we strive to emulate. They won 28 games last year and returned most of their guys and we would love to get to that point,” UE head coach David Ragland said. “We played well for most of the first half and we will learn from tonight and be ready for Charleston tomorrow.”
Casey scored 13 points while adding eight rebounds in the contest. Keishon Porter and Bryce Quinet also scored 13 points apiece. Josh Hughes scored seven points. Akron was led by Bowen Hardman and Tavari Johnson who recorded 19 points each.
Akron scored the opening five points of the contest before UE began to roll. After going 0-2 with three turnovers, Josh Hughes scored on back-to-back possessions to open a= 9-0 lead to put the Purple Aces in front for the first time. AJ Casey completed the run with two baskets of his own as UE led 9-5 at the 15:35 mark.
Following a triple by the Zips, Keishon Porter scored to put Evansville back up by three before another 3-pointer tied things up at 11-11. Akron retook a 14-11 edge on three free throws while Bryce Quinet knocked down his first triple of the contest to tie the score once again with 11:52 remaining in the half.
With the Zips up 23-18 just past the midway point of the period, Casey’s third field goal of the night made it a 3-point game. That is when Akron knocked down consecutive triples while scoring eight in a row to take their first double figure lead at 31-20. A pair of Casey free throws got the Aces back on track, however, the Zips would take their largest lead of the period at 36-24 inside of the 5-minute mark.
Evansville cut the deficit back down to eight points at the break with Quinet registering the final bucket of the period to make it a 44-36 game at the break. Casey led UE with 11 points while Bowen Hardman scored 16 in the opening 20 minutes.
Just over three minutes into the second half, Akron continued to add to its lead, going up 52-38 on a 3-point play. With just under ten minutes left, the lead for the Zips reached 19 at 69-50. Quinet knocked down another trey to cut into the deficit but it was all Akron from that point. They completed the game on a 28-9 run to finish with the 97-59 victory.
The Zips shot 56.1% from the field while holding the Aces to 43.5%. They also completed the game with a 29-22 rebounding edge. |

Big Second Half Powers Aces Over IU Indy
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Heading into halftime facing a three-point deficit, the University of Evansville women's basketball team got red-hot to begin the third quarter to build a lead they would not relinquish, defeating IU Indy 75-58 in their home opener on Thursday night inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse. The win was the Aces' largest against a DI foe since an 18-point win over Bradley on January 30, 2023.
Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights) paced the Aces with 25 points while adding seven assists, seven rebounds, and a career-high five steals. Logan Luebbers Palmer (Union, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) enjoyed a career night, scoring a career-high 23 points, 21 of which came in the second half, while 6-for-11 shooting from the three-point line.
Evansville got out to an early lead, scoring the first five points of the game on a three-pointer by Runner and two free throws from Luebbers Palmer. The Purple Aces extended their lead to eight with 2:31 to go in the quarter, but the Jaguars battled back to make it a five-point game heading into the second quarter.
The Purple Aces struggled to score in the second quarter, putting up only seven points. The Jaguars capitalized, taking a 26-23 lead into halftime.
Despite their offensive struggles in the first half, the Aces broke out offensively in the second half. Mireia Mustaros (Barcelona, Spain/Odessa College) got the Aces going with a buckets in the paint on the Aces' first two possessions of the half.
From there, it was the Luebbers Palmer show, as the sophomore scored 14 points in the next 3:37 of action to help the Aces go on a 16-6 run and open up an 11-point lead. During the stretch, Luebbers Palmer knocked down four three-pointers. The 27 point quarter was Evansville's largest of the season.
Holding a 50-42 lead going into the fourth quarter, the Aces kept the foot on the gas, as Kylee Norkus (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) knocked down a three-pointer to begin the quarter. Norkus played 10 minutes on the night in her long-awaited return from injury, making her first appearance since November 18, 2024.
The Evansville offensive continued to light it up in the fourth quarter, not letting the Jaguars back within single digits. Runner took control of the game, scoring 10 points in the final 5:50 of play. With 2:42 to go and Aces holding a 15-point lead, Luebbers Palmer put the cherry on top of a stellar night, knocking down another three to make it 71-53. From there, the Aces knocked down their free throws to salt away a 75-58 win.
"Great win for us tonight," said Head Coach Robyn Scherr. "Really pleased with our effort. 52 points in the second half is something I'm really pumped about."
"[It was] a breakout offensive performance, we really needed that. I thought Camryn Runner kept us afloat in the first half, and the second half was much more of a team effort on the scoring front."
"Logan Luebbers Palmer had a huge second half. After missing a bunch of shots in the first half, to come out and keep shooting and see the ball go through the hoop, it provided a big spark."
Evansville shot a season-best 46.2% from the field, including a 47.4% mark from three-point range. The Purple Aces also posted season highs in points (75), free throws made (18), assists (9) and steals (9).
