UNIVERSITY OF EVANSVILLE THEATRE PRESENTS NATIVE GARDENS

Local attorney and historian Joshua Claybourn will deliver a talk, entitled, “Tariffs, Emergencies, and the Boundaries of Presidential Power,” on Monday, November 17 at 7 p.m. in Koch 100.
Last week, the Supreme Court held oral arguments in the consolidated case of Learning Resources v. Trump and V.O.S. Selections v. Trump that examines the constitutionality of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Claybourn, an attorney with Jackson Kelly, is the coauthor of an amicus brief that brought together a broad coalition of major national legal figures who have urged the Supreme Court to uphold the separation of powers and strike down the unilateral imposition of tariffs by the president. He was in the room when the oral arguments took place in the Supreme Court on November 5.
Claybourn’s talk is being sponsored by the Department of History, Politics, and Social Change. The event is free and open to the public. Any interested members of the community are encouraged to attend.

Be Part of the Magic – Volunteer for Winter on Walnut! Hi Everyone, I hope you’re doing well! Each year, the Student Activities Board (SAB) brings some of our favorite campus traditions to life. This semester, we’ve already celebrated an amazing Homecoming Block Party—and now it’s time to look forward to Winter on Walnut! Winter on Walnut will take place on Wednesday, December 3, from 4:00–9:00 PM in the outdoor areas surrounding Ridgway University Center. This beloved tradition typically welcomes 500+ members of our campus community each year, including students, families, faculty, and staff. To make Winter on Walnut a success, we need your help! We’re looking for employee volunteers to support the Winter Holiday Village, which features:
- 6 fun games
- 2 novelty attractions
- Multiple selfie spots and interactive activities (think carnival or arcade vibes!)
We need at least 6 volunteers per hour to help run the games so that SAB members—who usually staff these stations—can enjoy the event they worked so hard to create. If you’re able to lend a hand, please sign up for a time slot here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E4EABA82EA4FECF8-60302540-winter#/ Thank you for helping us make this tradition magical for our campus community! Read Books, Win a Prize!
|
|
It’s not too late! The Read Harder Challenge doesn’t end until April 30. All you have to do is read 8 books before April 30, four of which need to fit the eight requirements on the Read Harder Challenge form. Read your books, copy the titles on the Read Harder Challenge Form, turn it in to the Info Desk in the library by April 30. You’ll be entered in a drawing for a $50 gift card.
There are suggestions for books that fit the criteria on the second floor of the library, in the IDEA space. There is no limit on what you read. Read a graphic novel, it counts. Read a children’s book, it’s one of the criteria. Re-read something you love, or stretch your boundaries and try a new genre. We just want you to read and have fun.

Clark Kimberling, UE Professor of Mathematics, has a chapter in a new online book entitled Polynomials - Exploring Fundamental Mathematical Expressions, published this month by IntechOpen. The chapter, "Polynomial Points in the Plane of a Triangle," analyzes special objects (points, lines, and curves) in the plane of an abstract triangle. If the side-lengths of the triangle are variables a, b, c, then the special objects have homogeneous barycentric coordinates that are polynomial functions of a, b, c. The book can be accessed at https://www.intechopen.com/books/1003926, and from there you can download each of the eight chapters. |

UE Mathematics Major Alexander Bastien Publishes in Prestigious Mathematics Journals
|
|
Congratulations to Alexander Bastien, a pre-doctoral mathematics major, on this outstanding achievement! His summer research project, mentored by Dr. Omid Khormali, an assistant professor of mathematics at UE, led to two major publications in the field of discrete mathematics.
A paper titled "On Link-Irregular Labelings of Graphs" was recently published in the well-known journal Australasian Journal of Combinatorics (Vol. 93 No. 2, 2025, Pages 408–421), and a second paper, titled “On the Regularity, Planarity and Edge Bounds of Link-Irregular Graphs,” has been accepted in the prestigious journal Discussiones Mathematicae Graph Theory.
In this research, in addition to several interesting results, a conjecture that had remained open in graph theory was also disproved, marking an exceptional scholarly contribution for an undergraduate researcher.
This work originated from Alexander’s UExplore Undergraduate Research Program project, which supports hands-on, faculty-mentored research experiences at the University of Evansville.
Congratulations again to Alexander Bastien for this remarkable accomplishment! |

Applications are due for Summer 2027 on December 15th, 2025. Applications for Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 are due on April 1, 2026.
Summer Applicants:
There are two summer semesters at Harlaxton. A two-and-a-half-week session that focuses on STEM and a four-and-a-half-week session that focuses on arts and humanities. Faculty can apply to teach one course either of these terms. You can see the summer 2026 schedule as an example here- Summer Sessions at Harlaxton | Harlaxton.
Once courses are approved, we will recruit for these courses and then decide which course will finally run based on enrollment of students. These decisions are made in late January of the year of the program. If your course does run in the summer session at Harlaxton, salary will be paid $500 per student enrolled in your class. In the summer, there are no funds for airfare, and family members pay for their own accommodation and meals. Fees for room and board for a spouse may be waived if there are 10 or more students enrolled in your class. Faculty and families will also be invoiced for health and transportation fees at the Manor for each member of the family and the faculty member. These fees are approximately $300 per person.

Women's Basketball Battles, but Comes up Short at Wright State
|
|
DAYTON, Ohio – Despite facing a 16-point deficit after the first quarter, the University of Evansville women's basketball team battled back against Wright State on Sunday, outscoring the Raiders over the final three quarters, but ultimately fell short by a score of 69-60.
Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights) led the Aces with 16 points, while Logan Luebbers Palmer (Union, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) scored in double figures for the third game in a row with a season-high 13. Freshman Georgia Ferguson (Waterloo, Ontario/Cairine Wilson Secondary School) added nine points for the highest scoring total of her young collegiate career.
Wright State got off to a hot start, opening up a 9-0 lead in the first 2:20 of action. Runner steadied things for the Aces, scoring her team's first four points to make it 11-4, but the Raiders extended their lead to 16 at the end of the quarter.
The Purple Aces got their offense going in the second quarter, shooting four-for-six from three-point range to get back in the game. Evansville ended the quarter on an 8-1 run, with Luebbers Palmer and Elle Snyder (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) knocking down three-pointers and Runner hitting a jumper to make the score 38-25 heading into halftime.
Wright State got their lead back up to 19 in the first four and a half minutes of the third quarter, but the Purple Aces would not go down without a fight, continuing to chip away. A basket from Jelena Savic (Melbourne, Australia/Kurunjang Secondary College) and a transition three by Sydney Huber (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Mount Vernon) made it 48-34 and forced a Raiders timeout with 4:54 to go in the quarter. In the Aces' final possession of the third, Luebbers Palmer buried a contested three to keep it within striking distance heading into the fourth.
Evansville came out of the gates hot in the final period, with Snyder, Ferguson and Runner all getting buckets before another three by Luebbers Palmer brought the score to 59-51 with 5:18 remaining. A layup by Runner cut the deficit to six with 4:04 left, and following a Raiders basket, Lubbers Palmer responded to make it a six-point game once again with 2:36 to go. Evansville shot 38.9% from three on the afternoon, their highest three-point shooting clip of the season, led by a 3-for-3 performance from Luebbers Palmer. The Purple Aces out-rebounded the Raiders 41-31, paced by BreAunna Ward (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) with seven.

Volleyball wraps up 2025 season
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Seniors Kora Ruff and Maddie Hawkins were honored as the University of Evansville volleyball team completed the 2025 season on Saturday at Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
Evansville dropped the finale by a 3-1 final to Southern Illinois. Hinsley Everett finished with 11 kills while Josdarilee Caraballo recorded 10 kills. Ainoah Cruz had 18 digs while Lexi Owen tallied 17 assists. The Salukis were led by Cecilia Bulmahn’s 15 kills.
Set 1 – SIU 25, UE 19
Southern Illinois opened the match scoring five of the first six points before going up 9-2. Lexi Owen recorded consecutive service aces to cut the deficit to three and Josdarilee Caraballo picked up a solo block and kill to tie the score at 13-13. At that point, SIU scored nine in a row to grab control. UE made it interesting down the stretch scoring five in a row, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Salukis took the set.
Set 2 – SIU 37, UE 35
Evansville trailed by an early 3-1 margin until Caraballo picked up a kill to tie the score at 3-3. Chloe Cline and Makenzie Miller assisted on a block to give UE a 5-4 lead, however, the Salukis bounced back to go up 10-7. Caraballo added another kill to tie the game at 12-12 while Ryan Scheu picked up a kill to put the Aces on top at 19-18. The squads swapped the lead down the stretch before heading into extra points. Both teams had chances to win but it was the Salukis outlasting the Aces to take a 2-0 lead.
Set 3 – SIU 25, UE 20
Two block assists and a kill by Chloe Cline set UE up with a 4-1 advantage. Lexi Owen recorded an ace to make it a 6-2 game. The Salukis stormed back to take a 10-9 lead but the Aces regained the lead as a Caraballo kill helped to make it a 15-11 contest. Another kill by Cline established a 17-14 lead before SIU rallied. A 7-1 run gave them a 21-18 lead and they would hang on to clinch the match. |

Historic Season for Men's Soccer Ends in MVC Championship Game
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Making their fourth MVC Championship game appearance in the last five seasons, the University of Evansville men's soccer team fought for all 90 minutes, but came up just short against Western Michigan on Saturday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium. The first half of play was a defensive battle, with both teams combining for only three shots in the first 45 minutes. Both offenses turned up the pressure in the second half, with Tancredi Fadda (Monza, Italy/University of Milan) putting a shot on goal in the 49th minute and Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) making his first save of the night in the 52nd minute. Evansville tallied four more shots in the next 11 minutes, including another shot on goal by Fadda, but could not find the back of the net. Western Michigan broke through in the 73rd minute, scoring a bicycle kick goal to take a 1-0 lead. The Purple Aces continued to fight in the final 17 minutes, creating a number of scoring chances. Evansville tallied nine shots in the remainder of the match, including shots on goal by Devin Shepherd (Denver, Colo./Arapahoe), Nacho Garcia (Zaragoza, Spain/UNIR), and Martin Wurschmidt (Stavern, Norway/Thor Heyerdahl VGS). However, the Broncos defense held strong, and Western Michigan took a 1-0 win. On the night, Evansville out-shot Western Michigan 17-6, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Fadda had a game-high five shots, putting two on goal. "It took us a while to get the game on our terms," said Head Coach Robbe Tarver. "As we were starting to build pressure and get more consistent looks on goal, they took advantage of a set piece moment. I think we created enough to win the game, and it just didn't happen. That's the game." Andres Escudero (San Sebastián de los Reyes, Spain/IES Joan Miro), Garcia and Shepherd represented Evansville on the MVC All-Tournament Team. Evansville ends the season with a 7-5-8 record overall and captured a share of the MVC regular season title and the number one seed in the MVC Tournament for the first time in program history. |

Men's basketball signs Caden Symons
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – One of the top high school basketball players in the State of Idaho is heading to the University of Evansville. Purple Aces head men’s basketball coach David Ragland has announced the signing of Caden Symons to a National Letter of Intent to play for the UE squad next season.
Symons – a 6-foot-4 guard from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho – enters the 2025-26 season as the No. 3 rated player in Idaho. He currently plays for Coeur d’Alene High School.
“We are thrilled to welcome Caden and the entire Symons family to our UE basketball program. Caden is an outstanding young man who comes from a true basketball background,” Ragland said. “Both of his parents played collegiately and have established themselves as highly successful coaches. Caden embodies a tremendous work ethic and plays the game the right way. He is exceptionally competitive, defensively focused, and consistently makes winning plays for his teammates.”
“He is a perfect fit for the culture we have built here at UE. We are confident that his addition will help us take the next step forward as we continue working to revive the proud tradition of this storied program.”
Last season, Symons averaged 20.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game for the Vikings. He was recognized as a Second Team All-Idaho player at the 6A level.
“When I was on my official visit I felt a sense of community and knew I would be taking care of and pushed to be the best player and child of God,” Symons exclaimed. “I saw the way the coaches treated the players and knew I wanted to be part of a program with that type of relationship”.
Symons comes from a family with a great deal of basketball experience. His parents both played at the college level. His father Corey is the head coach at North Idaho College while his mother, Nicole, is a former girls basketball coach at Coeur d’Alene HS. His sister, Madi, currently plays for the University of Wyoming. Along with his efforts in basketball, Symons is a quarterback for his high school football team.
UE assistant coach George Swanson is a former assistant coach at NIC and worked under Symons while fellow Aces assistant coach Sammy Dowd played at NIC for two seasons. |
