Former UE Head of School of Nursing Jane Allen Passes Away
The University of Evansville extends its sympathies to the family and friends of Jane P. Allen, former Head of the UE School of Nursing. She inspired generations of nurses through her leadership and dedication. A 1975 UE graduate who earned her MSN in 1980, Jane returned to campus in 1991 after teaching at Henderson Community College. She believed nursing was as much a calling of the heart as a discipline of the mind, incorporating empathy, communication, and compassion into her teaching. From 2001 to 2006, as Head of the School of Nursing, she championed an approach that reminded students the greatest healing comes through care and compassion.

Runner Notches First Career Double-Double, Aces Drop Season Opener at SEMO
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Evansville sophomore Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights) led all scorers and notched her first career double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds, but the Purple Aces dropped their season opener by a score of 71-66 at SEMO on Thursday.
Georgia Cox (Ballarat, Australia/Eastern Illinois) and Avery Kelley (Evansville, Ind./Memorial) also scored in double figures for the Purple Aces, tallying 11 points each, while Elle Snyder (Latrobe, Penn./Greater Latrobe) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench. Runner's 26 points serve as her second-highest single game scoring total, while her 11 rebounds are a career-best.
The Redhawks opened the game on a 5-0 run, but the Aces fought back, with Avery Kelley knocking down a transition three to give Evansville their first lead of the day at 8-7 with 5:52 to go in the first quarter. Evansville pushed the lead to six on a three-pointer by Elle Snyder with 3:20 remaining in the quarter, while Kelley splashed another three-pointer at the 1:43 mark to make the score 19-12. SEMO battled back at the end of the quarter, cutting the UE lead to four heading into the second.
Playing her first game with the Purple Aces, Eastern Illinois transfer Georgia Cox made her presence felt early in the second quarter, scoring seven points in the first 3:39 of the period to help Evansville take a 28-22 lead. Both teams went cold near the end of the quarter, as the final 3:29 of the half did not see a made field goal, and the Aces took a 32-25 advantage heading into the break.
SEMO started the second half hot, using a 10-0 run in the first 3:48 of the third quarter to grab a 35-32 lead. After a pair free throws from Snyder snapped the Redhawks' run, Runner took control, scoring eight consecutive points for the Aces to help her team regain the lead at 42-40. With the Aces holding the final possession of the quarter, Cox knocked down a jumper on the baseline as time expired to make it a four-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Just as they started the second half, SEMO got red-hot once again to begin the fourth quarter, outscoring Evansville 17-5 in the first 4:47 of the period to build their largest lead of the day to that point at 59-51. With 2:25 to go, the Redhawks brought their lead to 11, but consecutive three-pointers by Kelley and Runner cut UE's deficit to seven with 1:23 remaining. Another three by Runner with 0:13 to play brought the Aces back within four, but SEMO was able to salt the game away and take a 71-66 win.
The Aces return to action on Sunday, heading to Iowa City to take on 21st-ranked Iowa. Tip-off from Carver-Hawkeye Arena is set for 2 PM and will be streamed live on Big Ten Plus. |

Aces Drop Regular Season Finale to Belmont, Enter MVC Tournament with Top Seed
NASHVILLE – In the final match of the regular season, the University of Evansville men's soccer team suffered their first MVC loss of the campaign, falling to Belmont by a score of 2-1. Despite the loss, Evansville enters the MVC Tournament with the number one seed for the first time in program history and will host the winner of UIC and Belmont next Wednesday at Arad McCutchan Stadium. Neither team was able to put a shot on goal in the opening stages of action, with the Aces tallying one shot and the Bruins putting up two. In the 28th minute of action, star freshman Andres Escudero (San Sebastián de los Reyes, Spain/IES Joan Miro) created a scoring chance on his own, taking a thrown in near the midfield line and battling Belmont defenders to make a long run. Just outside the penalty area, Escudero took a left-footed shot that went past the Belmont keeper, off the crossbar and into the back of the net. The goal was Escudero's ninth of the season, the most by a UE freshman since MVC Freshman of the Year Nacho Diaz Barragan scored nine in 2022, and gave the Aces a 1-0 lead. Escudero nearly extended the lead in the 34th minute with another good scoring chance, but his shot was saved. Belmont was able to find the equalizer before halftime, scoring in the 39th minute to make it a 1-1 game heading into halftime. Escudero threatened to score once again in the 69th minute, hitting the post with a shot, but was left empty-handed. Less than a minute later, Belmont flipped the script, finding the back of the net to take their first lead of the night. For the final 20 minutes, Evansville fought to find the equalizer, including Escudero nearly scoring once again with another shot off the post. However, the Aces were unable to find the tying goal as the Bruins earned a 2-1 win. "I think we have put together a lot of games where we have managed moments well, and I think tonight when we went up 1-0, we didn't do that quite as well," said Head Coach Robbe Tarver. "I think we created a decent amount to try and equalize the game, we hit the post twice, but Belmont is a good team and they are really tough to beat at home." "At the end of the day, we are pretty healthy going into the tournament, we have the number one seed, we have a bye to prepare, and we get to host. There are a lot of positives that we have from the work we have put in throughout the season." "I think it is a good lesson for us to learn that every moment of a game matters, and if you switch off, you are going to get punished. We'll flush it, we will be ready for next Wednesday and ready to go." With the loss, Evansville moves to 6-4-8 overall with a 3-1-3 mark in MVC play. The Purple Aces earned a share of the MVC regular season title and will serve as the number one seed in the conference tournament, earning a bye to the semifinal round. Kick-off for Wednesday's tournament match at Arad McCutchan Stadium is set for 6 PM. |

Mroz Snags Second MVC Defensive Player of the Week Nod
ST. LOUIS – University of Evansville sophomore goalkeeper Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) earned his second MVC Defensive Player of the Week award in the last four weeks on Tuesday afternoon, the league office announced. Mroz earns the award after posting 12 saves in wins over Louisville and Northern Illinois, including a season-high 10 saves in the win over the Huskies to help Evansville clinch a share of their first regular season conference title since 1991.
On Monday at Louisville, Mroz made two saves to help his team to a 3-1 win. The win was Evansville's first over a power conference opponent since 2013 and the first over the Cardinals in Louisville since 1991. Mroz continued to help the Aces make history on Friday with one of the best performances of his career, stopping 10 shots for his sixth clean sheet of the year. In six MVC matches this season, Mroz has recorded four shutouts and allowed only three goals.
Mroz ranks among both MVC and national leaders in multiple categories, ranking third in the MVC and 44th in the country in goals against average at .882 and is second in the MVC and 39th nationally with six shutouts. The Aces' keeper has been especially stout in conference play, maintaining a league-best .50 goals against average. Mroz also paces the conference in shutouts (4) and save percentage (.855) against MVC opposition.
Evansville wraps up the regular season on Wednesday, traveling to Nashville to take on Belmont. With a win or tie, Evansville would clinch the MVC regular season title outright. Kick-off is set for 6 PM. |
