Sympathy to...

* Former UE Head of School of Nursing Jane Allen Passes Away

The University of Evansville extends its sympathies to the family and friends of Jane P. Allen, former Head of the UE School of Nursing. She inspired generations of nurses through her leadership and dedication. A 1975 UE graduate who earned her MSN in 1980, Jane returned to campus in 1991 after teaching at Henderson Community College. She believed nursing was as much a calling of the heart as a discipline of the mind, incorporating empathy, communication, and compassion into her teaching. From 2001 to 2006, as Head of the School of Nursing, she championed an approach that reminded students the greatest healing comes through care and compassion.

* Hughes and Casey lead UE men against #1 Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Josh Hughes and AJ Casey combined for 29 points to lead the University of Evansville men’s basketball team in Tuesday’s season-opening 82-51 loss to #1 Purdue inside Mackey Arena.

Hughes compiled a double-double, scoring 15 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Casey recorded 14 points and fell just one board shy of a double-double as he hauled in nine boards. Trent Hundley finished the night with nine points marking his highest total in his time at UE. Purdue was led by Fletcher Loyer’s 30 points. He was 8-of-11 from the field including a 7-for-10 showing from outside. Jack Benter and Daniel Jacobsen scored 11 points apiece.

“I thought overall we competed. To finish with 20 offensive rebounds and turn the ball over just ten times against a team like Purdue was a huge positive for us,” UE head coach David Ragland said. “We just did not hit our shots but we are still gelling as a team. I am proud of how we performed against a program with the stature of Purdue.”

Throughout the majority of the first half the Purple Aces kept pace with the top-ranked Boilermakers. Josh Hughes opened the scoring with a 3-pointer on UE’s opening possession before adding a dunk to make it a 5-1 game. At the 16:21 mark, Jack Benter’s triple gave Purdue its first lead at 9-7.

Scoring six in a row, the Boilermakers extended the lead to 15-7 while AJ Casey’s 3-point play got Evansville back within five at 15-10. With 11:46 remaining in the half, Hughes’ seventh point of the night kept his squad within five tallies. A quick spurt by the Boilermakers extended their lead to eight points at the midway point of the half, but a tenacious UE squad battled back once again.

Bryce Quinet’s layup was later followed by a Trent Hundley triple to cut the Purdue lead to just three – 20-17 – with 7:49 left in the period. Over the final minutes, Purdue took it to a new level outscoring the Aces by a 21-5 margin to take a 41-22 lead at the break. Fletcher Loyer completed the period with 18 points as Purdue cruised to the 21-point advantage at the half. Hughes had seven in the first 20 minutes.

Out of the break, the Boilermakers scored the first 12 points to go up 53-22. Casey’s second-chance layup with 14:45 on the clock marked UE’s first points of the half. Evansville cut the gap to 28 points on multiple occasions while the advantage for Purdue reached as many as 38 points (78-40). Over the final four minutes, the Aces cut into the deficit as Trent Hundley scored five in a row with the final score finishing at 82-51.

Both squads wrapped up the evening with 40 rebounds with UE hauling in 20 offensive caroms. Purdue shot 47.5% from the field while UE finished at 30.0%. The Boilermakers finished the night with 22 assists against just seven turnovers. UE registered 13 assists while turning the ball over just ten times.

UE opens its home slate on Friday with an 11 a.m. game against Calumet College of St. Joseph.

ST. LOUIS – University of Evansville sophomore goalkeeper Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) earned his second MVC Defensive Player of the Week award in the last four weeks on Tuesday afternoon, the league office announced. Mroz earns the award after posting 12 saves in wins over Louisville and Northern Illinois, including a season-high 10 saves in the win over the Huskies to help Evansville clinch a share of their first regular season conference title since 1991.

For the first time since 1991, the University of Evansville men's soccer team clinched a share of a regular season conference title, taking down Northern Illinois by a score of 1-0 on Friday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium. The regular season title is Evansville's first as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Northern Illinois dominated the scoring chances in the first half, tallying 10 shots to the Aces' five, but Mroz held strong with six saves to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime. Mroz made three saves in the first 10 and a half minutes of play before making two more saves in the 25th minute.

Tancredi Fadda (Monza, Italy/University of Milan) saw the Aces' best scoring chance of the first half in the first 40th minute, but his shot was saved to keep it 0-0 going to half.

In the 58th minute, Roberts struck for the night's first goal, collecting a blocked shot near the top of the box and firing a shot past a diving keeper and into the bottom right corner.

* Evansville Promise Neighborhood Partners Unite to Drive Collective Action Across Four Key Pipelines

The Evansville Promise Neighborhood (EPN) at the University of Evansville (UE) continues to strengthen its collaborative approach to community transformation, bringing together partners across four key focus areas to launch collective, high-impact initiatives that empower local families and create pathways of opportunity.

Following EPN's first-ever Essential Staff Training and Annual All-Partner Meeting earlier this year, each of the four EPN workgroups formed a Task Force to identify one or two collective projects that extend beyond individual partner programs. These Task Forces are now implementing their first shared action plans designed to make a measurable, lasting impact across the neighborhood.

Pipeline 1: Early Health and Kindergarten Readiness

To strengthen early learning outcomes, the Early Health and Kindergarten Readiness pipeline is leading a neighborhood-wide effort to empower families through the Little Moments, Big Growth campaign. The campaign aims to equip caregivers of young children with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to prepare their child for school. More than a message, Little Moments, Big Growth empowers families to take small, everyday actions that lead to big outcomes in a child's learning journey.

Pipeline 2: Student Achievement and Success

Recognizing that student success begins with being present, the Student Achievement and Success pipeline is piloting creative strategies to support attendance and family connection throughout the year. Efforts include the development of a consistent and shared attendance incentive structure and strategies to overcome transportation barriers-supported in part by the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation's (EVSC) new Promise Neighborhood bus, PN1, which works to help students and families stay connected and engaged throughout the year.

Pipeline 3: Postsecondary Access, Success, and Workforce Readiness

By taking a multigenerational approach to college and career readiness, the Postsecondary Access, Success, and Workforce Readiness pipeline is inspiring both students and families to dream big and plan ahead. Work is underway to develop mobile engagement displays, with the possibility of including virtual reality (VR) experiences, that will bring college and career exploration directly to students and families. The goal is to spark meaningful, future-focused conversations about education and career paths-wherever families already gather.

Pipeline 4: Neighborhood and Community Revitalization

Focused on building a healthier neighborhood, the Neighborhood and Community Revitalization pipeline is bringing fresh produce and interactive learning to EVSC family engagement events and after-school programs. By incorporating fresh produce and educational components into student experiences, the initiative seeks to build lifelong healthy habits and deepen understanding of food and nutrition.

About Evansville Promise Neighborhood

Evansville Promise Neighborhood (EPN) is an initiative housed at the University of Evansville's Center for Innovation & Change, made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Education. EPN focuses on building strategic partnerships that empower generations and create opportunities for kids, families, and entire communities.

* UE Athletics Collaboration with Evansville Promise Neighborhood is a SLAM DUNK!

The University of Evansville Athletics Department is proud to partner with the Evansville Promise Neighborhood to provide season tickets for EPN students and families to both men’s and women’s basketball games.

Through this collaboration, tickets will be distributed as incentives and giveaways to students across all six EPN schools. This initiative is designed to reward positive behavior, promote student engagement, and strengthen the connection between UE Athletics and the Evansville community.

We’re excited to welcome EPN students and families to cheer on the Aces and experience the excitement of college basketball.

This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to community engagement and youth development. We look forward to future opportunities to collaborate and make a lasting impact.
