* Pulitzer Prize-Nominated Historian Dr. Kate Masur to Speak at UE on Post-Civil War Reconstruction

Pulitzer Prize-nominated historian Dr. Kate Masur will speak on Post-Civil War Reconstruction during the annual Thomas C. Fiddick Memorial Lecture Series on Friday, October 24, at 7:00 p.m. in Eykamp Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Professor Masur will discuss her book, Equal: The Surprising History of an American Founding Concept, focusing on the Reconstruction Era, when Americans first attempted to build a nation that truly reflected the Declaration of Independence's assertion that "all men are created equal." She will explore how the constitutional changes of Reconstruction continue to shape contemporary life, and why the period is often overlooked or misunderstood.

In her lecture, Masur will also examine how historians' interpretations of Reconstruction have evolved over time and why the practice of "revisionism" is a vital part of historical scholarship.

Dr. Masur is the John D. MacArthur Professor at Northwestern University and author of Until Justice Be Done: America's First Civil Rights Movement, from the Revolution to Reconstruction, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Her most recent work includes Freedom Was in Sight! A Graphic History of Reconstruction in the Washington, D.C., Region.

This lecture is presented as part of the annual Thomas C. Fiddick Memorial Lecture, established in 2002 by former students with the support of Fiddick's friends and the University. Each year, a committee consisting of full-time members of the Department of History, a member of the Fiddick family, and alumni of the Department selects the lecturer.

About Thomas C. Fiddick:

Thomas Fiddick served as a professor of history at the University of Evansville from the fall of 1963 to the spring of 2002. Over his 39-year career, he was a dedicated teacher, a productive scholar, and a tireless advocate for justice. His untimely death on the day of his retirement in 2002 shocked the University community, particularly his many former students.

  • When: Friday, October 24, 2025, at 7:00 p.m.

* UE Biology/Environmental Science Alumni Publish Article with Biology Professors

Congratulations to UE biology alumni Elyse Talley, Darcie Smith, Christie Guetling (nei Hubbard),  former UE ES alumni Caitlin Caldwell and Jordon Lachowecki and former ES Physics alum Adam Dillman for their publication in the journal Plant Ecology. Their research, entitled, “Quality varies among host species, but diet mixing provides no benefit to the generalist parasite, Cuscuta gronovii” was guided by Dr. Cris G. Hochwender and Dr. E. Ann Powell. This D1 research pushes the boundary on the ecological understanding of diet mixing for generalist parasitic plants. The findings from the study suggest that the benefit of diet mixing seen for herbivores cannot be generalized to include parasitic plants. While diet mixing does not increase the fitness of C. gronovii, host plant quality associated with plant defenses appears to mediate parasite success.

This publication is the first published manuscript in a series associated with the collaboration between Dr. Ann Powell and Dr. Cris Hochwender. While faculty publication success is encouraging for these faculty members, the faculty are more encouraged that the research projects associated with six undergraduate students has been brought to fruition through a peer-reviewed publication in such a well-regarded journal!

* Congratulations to Dr. Logan Pant

Dr. Logan Pant, Assistant Professor of Marketing in the Schroeder School of Business, recently had a journal article accepted for publication. "The Gritty Consumer: Determined Maintenance or Striving for Something New?" is forthcoming in the Journal of Advertising Research (ABDC: A). This research explores how grit, passion and perseverance toward goals, influences consumer choice. While grit is typically linked to persistence, a field study and three experiements show that gritty advertising actually encourages variety - seeking rather than status quo choices. This shift is driven by a promotion-focused mindset, where consumers pursue optimal outcomes through exploration. The finds reveal that grit in advertising can motivate consumers to try new options, offering strategic insights for marketers and advancing theory on grit's broader behavioral impacts. Firms can use these insights to design campaigns that inspire exploration rather than mere persistence.

* Escudero Named MVC Player of the Week, College Soccer News Freshman of the Week

ST. LOUIS – For the second time in the last four weeks, Evansville freshman Andres Escudero (San Sebastián de los Reyes, Spain/IES Joan Miro) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon. Additionally, Escudero was named national Freshman of the Week by College Soccer News, the publication announced on Tuesday morning.

Escudero earns the accolades after posting his third brace of the season on Saturday night at UIC, helping the Purple Aces secure a 2-2 draw and remain atop the MVC table.

Just 21 seconds after UIC notched the first goal of the match in the 40th minute, Escudero responded with his seventh goal of the season to even the score at one heading into halftime. In the second half, the Aces faced a 2-1 deficit, but Escudero struck again with a goal in the 85th minute to help his team leave Chicago with a crucial point.

The brace was Escudero's third of the season, making him one of two freshmen in the country with three braces this season and the first UE freshman with three braces in a season since Nacho Diaz Barragan in 2022. Escudero also became one of 12 players in the country this season with three games scoring two goals or more.

Escudero has put together one of the most prolific freshman campaigns in Purple Aces program history, with his eight goals being the most by an Evansville freshman since MVC Freshman of the Year Nacho Diaz Barragan in 2022. Among freshmen nationally, Escudero ranks third in goals scored and ranks 16th among all players with eight.

Escudero and the Purple Aces are back in action on Friday, celebrating Senior Night against Bradley at Arad McCutchan Stadium. Kick-off is set for 6 PM.

* $50,000 Moskowitz Family Gift Establishes First-Ever Student Awards for UE Physician Assistant Program

The University of Evansville (UE) is proud to announce a transformational $50,000 gift from Dr. Jay Moskowitz and Mrs. Joanne Moskowitz that will establish the first-ever student awards in the Department of Physician Assistant Science (UEPA).

The Moskowitz Family Physician Assistant Award for Innovation in Healthcare and the Moskowitz Family Physician Assistant Leadership Award will empower students who are driven to improve healthcare through bold ideas, creativity, compassionate leadership, and a deep commitment to service. Each year, recipients will be recognized at the UEPA hooding ceremony and receive funding to support participation in a related Health Sciences conference. The awards are supported by a permanent endowment, ensuring they will impact students for generations to come.

Physician assistants play a vital role in expanding access to care, often serving as the first point of contact and the driving force behind coordinated, compassionate healthcare. At UE, the Physician Assistant Science Program prepares students to meet this need, especially in underserved and rural areas.

"Good health made possible, that's our credo," said Dr. Moskowitz. "These awards are about more than recognition. They're about fueling the energy and excellence of students who will shape the future of care."

Dr. Moskowitz's career spans more than five decades in science, policy, and healthcare leadership. At the National Institutes of Health, he helped launch the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders and championed translational science, bridging laboratory breakthroughs with clinical solutions. At Wake Forest University School of Medicine, he spearheaded a dramatic expansion of the medical school's research enterprise. During his time at Pennsylvania State University, he integrated research programs across campuses and established the "Jayhound" inter-campus shuttle, strengthening health science collaborations. "Innovation doesn't happen in isolation," he said. "Everywhere we've gone, I've tried to connect universities, industry, and communities."

Joanne Moskowitz's impact has been equally profound. A lifelong educator, she taught elementary school for more than 30 years, instilling curiosity and confidence in young learners. "Sparking curiosity in children is what carries them forward into science, medicine, and service," she said. Her belief in the power of early education continues to shape the couple's philanthropic vision.

Now residents of Evansville, the Moskowitz family is deeply connected to UE's mission. "Every student deserves someone in their corner," said Mrs. Moskowitz. "For us, that means creating opportunities for growth, for learning, and for giving back in whatever ways we can."

"When a student sees their name on this plaque 20 years from now," Dr. Moskowitz added. "I hope they remember that someone believed in them, and that it inspires them to believe in others."
