Congratulations

* MacArthur Announcement–Professor Emeritus of Philosophy Anthony Beavers

Professor Emeritus of Philosophy Anthony Beavers was recently awarded a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to document the decline of philosophy in U.S. institutions of higher education. The grant follows three years of preliminary work by a team of researchers compiled by Beavers, who will each serve as Co-PIs on the grant. These include Peter Suber and David Weinberger, both formerly of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, Catherine Kemp, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Law at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY), Corey McCall, former Associate Professor of Philosophy at Elmira College and current instructor in Cornell’s Prison Education Program, and Mark Valenzuela, former Associate Professor of Engineering at the University of Evansville and current Project Manager of Academic Compliance and Accreditation at Washington University, St. Louis.

This MacArthur grant was awarded in part as one step toward documenting the losses that affect professional competence and vocational training incurred by universities that cut philosophy and other humanities from their curricula. Subsequent work on this project will explore methods and mechanisms for addressing these losses, particularly as dependence on artificial intelligence seems poised to erode the cognitive capabilities of college students and their efficacy in the emerging job market.

Beavers, who taught philosophy along with cognitive and information science at UE from 1991 to 2021, will conduct this research as an affiliated faculty member in the Cognitive Science Program at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he currently researches artificial intelligence and its effects on human cognition.
