* UNIVERSITY OF EVANSVILLE THEATRE PRESENTS LITTLE WOMEN

The University of Evansville Theatre announces the final installment of the 2024–2025 season with Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel, LITTLE WOMEN. This production opens at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Apr. 24, in the May Studio Theatre. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m., on Apr. 25 and 26, and at 2:00 p.m., on Apr. 26 and 27. This award-winning playwright has once again treated her source material with mischievous freedom, and the result is a sparklingly fresh adaptation of a timeless classic.  Jo March has no intention of being a typical Victorian lady!  In fact, all the March sisters strive to be intelligent and imaginative young women, and all are forced to reconcile their own ambitions with society’s expectations.  Using whip-smart dialogue, this modern adaptation is as intimate, endearing, and surprising as Alcott’s original novel was 150 years ago.

LITTLE WOMEN is directed by Maya Barry, a senior stage management major, from Marietta, Ga.; Guest Artist, Austin Kuhn ’20 serves as the scenic designer; Josie Madzik, a junior theatre studies major from Howell, Mich., is the costume designer; Ethan Santiago, a junior design and technology major from Belton, Texas, is the lighting designer; William Cooper Sanders, a junior theatre performance major from Jeffersonville, Ind., serves as the sound designer; Nick Geyvandova, a first-year theatre performance major from College Station, Texas, is the dramaturg; Jasmine Hardin, a first-year stage management major from Aurora, Colo., is the stage manager, and Quinn McGaugh, a junior performance major from McAlester, Okla., serves as the technical director.

The cast features Sophia McGuire, a junior theatre studies major from McKinney, Texas, as Jo March; Evelyn Hipp, a senior theatre studies major from Nolensville, Tenn., as Meg March; Kiara Cantu, a first-year performance major from Edinburg, Texas, as Beth March; Emily Proctor, a sophomore theatre studies major from Jeffersonville, Ind., as Amy March; Kennedy Olson, a junior performance major from Porter, Texas, as Marmee March/Aunt March; Alyssa Meadows, a junior performance major from Louisville, Ky., as Hannah/Mrs. Mingott/Messenger; Landry Barker, a junior performance major from Fort Worth, Texas, as Theodore “Laurie” Laurence; Arturo Quepons, a junior theatre performance major from San Antonio, Texas, as John Brooks/Parrot; and Gage Dragoo, a first-year performance major from Frisco, Texas, as Robert March/Mr. Laurence.

Seating is limited, and tickets are $20 for general admission and $18 for senior adults, UE employees, and non-UE students. Single tickets may be purchased online at theatre.evansville.edu or by calling the ticket office at 812.488.2031.

  • Ralph Larmann- Professor of Art
  • Rob Montgomery- Professor Emeritus of Marketing

Lora Becker, Professor of Psychology

Dr. Lora Becker earned her PhD and master’s degrees from the State University of New York (Binghamton), dual bachelor’s from Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio) and joined the UE faculty in 1999. Since joining the University, Dr. Becker has written numerous research articles and posters with undergraduate students and supported this research with a variety of granting sources including the Ball Brothers Venture Grant, the Mead Johnson Nutritional Grant, UE's Global Scholar grant and several UExplore Research Grants, ARSAF grants and ADVANTAGE Undergraduate Research grants. All of these research endeavors were sought in order to give students the opportunity to practice science on their way to their careers in medicine, teaching, and research. Her impact was felt on campus through several director positions over the past 20 years including the Neuroscience Program, the Summer Reading Program, the Major Discovery Program, the Academic Assessment Committee, and General Education. She spent a term as Faculty Senate Chair where she established meetings between Faculty Senate Executive board and the President's Cabinet. Her committee work is too numerous to list. Dr. Becker was the second recipient of the Eykamp Prize for extraordinary contributions by UE faculty to the University. She was also awarded the Mentor of the Year award from Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (or FUN). Nationally, she served as president of Nu Rho Psi, the honor society for neuroscience, overseeing the first Indiana chapter of the organization established at UE. She served as treasurer of FUN and spent twelve years on the Board of Directors for Phi Kappa Phi, the largest interdisciplinary honors society, culminating her time serving as President in 2024. But through it all, it was the classroom that motivated Dr. Becker the most. She built several courses in the neuroscience program and now retires having taught every neuroscience course that the University of Evansville offers. What a great 26 years!

* April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month- how can you participate in programming?

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence and supporting survivors. Sexual assault is a pervasive issue on college campuses, with 13% of all students experiencing rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation. Among undergraduate students, 26.4% of females and 6.8% of males experience these forms of sexual violence. Members of historically marginalized communities face even higher rates of sexual violence.

It's crucial that we come together to address this issue and promote a safe and respectful environment for everyone.

We have several events planned throughout the month to educate and engage our community:

  • Healthy Relationships Program: Join us on April 10th from 5:50-6:45pm in SOBA 71 to learn about building and maintaining healthy relationships.
  • Library Display: Visit the library to explore a curated display on sexual assault awareness and prevention.
  • Interactive Exhibit: Engage with an interactive exhibit in the Multicultural Student Commons that highlights the impact of sexual violence and ways to support survivors.
  • Lunch and Learn: Attend a session with Nursing professor Chantal Wood on Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners on April 29th from 12-1pm in the Multicultural Student Commons. This session will provide valuable insights into the role of these specialized nurses in supporting survivors and collecting evidence.

We encourage all community members to participate in these activities and to always ensure that they obtain clear and enthusiastic consent from their partners. Let's work together to create a campus culture where everyone feels safe and respected.

* Erin Lewis and Robert Dion Are Judges For the We The People National Finals in Washington

Erin Lewis, executive director of the Center for Innovation and Change, and Robert Dion, director of the Political Science program, recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate as judges in the national finals of the We The People competition.  State champions from high schools all across America converged on the capital last week to show their knowledge of the Constitution and the American political system.  Lewis and Dion were part of a three-member panel of judges that focused on federalism and the rule of law.  They were joined on the panel by Jonathan Varat, a former dean of the UCLA law school and coauthor (with Vikram Amar) of a leading textbook on constitutional law.  Their facilitator for the two days of competition was Atara Muhammad, global programs specialist for the District of Columbia Public Schools. Erin Lewis participated in the We The People program as a high school student at Castle and then went on to run the entire program in the state of Indiana. She currently serves on the board of the Center for Civic Education, which administers the We The People program nationwide.  For the past several years, the University of Evansville has been proud to host the regional competition for southwestern Indiana schools at our campus.

* Aces baseball hits second walk-off win to take series over Indiana State

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville baseball team took its first series win over the Indiana State Sycamores in three seasons with an 11-10 walk-off win in the 11th inning on Saturday.

The Purple Aces completed their largest comeback of the season on Saturday night in an 11-inning slugfest with Indiana State. After falling behind by six runs in under four innings, UE clawed its way back to an 8-8 tie in the bottom of the ninth. Evansville was able to end the game in the bottom of the 11th as singles from Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS), Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley), and Kevin McCormick (Orland Park, Ill. / St. Laurence HS) scored three runs for the 11-10 final.

“What an incredible game. Just Missouri Valley Conference baseball at its finest,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll after the win. “Rubber match games in this conference are always crazy, especially against rivals like Indiana State. For us, I’ve seen some unique baseball games on this field throughout my 17 years with a handful of walk-offs here and there.

“We showed so much grit and so much fight from a club that is pretty young. But if you see some of the guys that stepped up, Rumsey and Cal McGinnis. Just seeing our guys leave it out there when the season hasn’t been going as planned. We showed a lot of fight last night and tonight in all three facets of the game. Our offense really responded tonight.”

It was a three-up and three-down inning to start the game on both sides on Saturday night. Starting pitcher Owen Byberg (Barrie, Ontario) struck out the side for the Aces to have a strong start. But UE struggled over the next three innings on defense as the Sycamores scored six runs while blanking Evansville through the third.

The Aces broke the shutout in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on three hits. Right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) put a double down the left field line to score both left fielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) and catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine). Indiana State answered back with two runs of its own in the top of the fifth inning.

But UE’s defense was able to keep the Sycamores scoreless for the next four innings of scheduled play. While the defense did its job, Evansville’s offense added runs in the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the sixth. In the fifth, a lead-off walk to third baseman Jake McGhee (Fenton, Mo. / Christian Brothers College) became the Aces' third run with a double from Rumsey. Rumsey also scored in the fifth as Flaherty had another long single to bring the outfielder home for UE.

Evansville had its fifth run in the sixth as another lead-off walk, this time to designated hitter Evan Waggoner (Bedford, Ind. / Bedford North Lawrence HS), became a run. Waggoner advanced on a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice to move to third base, being 90 feet away from home. A sacrifice fly that almost went to the warning track from McGhee scored Waggoner to make it a three-run game.

The Aces' offense went down in order over the next two innings but had a big bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. After a strikeout to begin the ninth, McGhee and Rumsey had back-to-back singles, had two on for UE. Another strikeout was put on the board for Evansville, but Flaherty knocked his third hit of the night to the right corner to score McGhee.

McGinnis was up to bat after Flaherty and faced four pitches before putting the ball just up the middle to tie the game at eight runs with two outs on the board. The Aces weren’t able to bring the winning run home in the ninth, sending the game to extras. It was an empty inning for both sides in the 10th, forcing an 11th inning.

Indiana State scored first in the 11th, bringing two runs home with three hits and a walk. UE faced a 10-8 deficit heading into the bottom of the 11th. The frame didn’t start well for Evansville with a looking strikeout. But Rumsey again came through with a hit for the Aces to get UE’s offense going.

Longmeier and pinch hitter Aaron Nehls (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) got free passes from Sycamores reliever Zac Laird to load the bases. With only an out on the board, Indiana State swapped pitchers before facing McGinnis. But a new pitcher didn’t phase the infielder as McGinnis had his second game-tying single of the night into right field.

The single scored Rumsey and Longmeier, again making it a tied 10-10 score. Evansville didn’t have to wait long with the score tied as Kevin McCormick came in to pinch hit for the Aces. McCormick saw a strike and a ball before making contact for a single that went through the left side, scoring Nehls as the game-winning run.

Reliever Drew Fieger (Fort Mitchell, Ky. / Lincoln Trail CC) picked up his second win of the weekend as he had his longest outing of the season so far against the Sycamores. Fieger pitched a full four innings for UE, where he allowed four hits, two runs, and a walk while striking out two batters. He is now tied for the Evansville lead in wins with LHP Kevin Reed (Martinsville, Ind. / Martinsville HS)

The Aces are back in action on the road on Tuesday night. UE makes the trip to Western Kentucky to complete its series with the Hilltoppers for a 6 p.m. game. Evansville will be back at German American Bank Field on Tuesday, April 29, to take on Indiana.

* Aces drop finale to Racers

MURRAY, Ky. – Four runs in the final three innings saw Murray State overcome a 3-0 deficit to defeat the University of Evansville softball team by a final score of 4-3 on Saturday at Racer Field.

A quick start saw Evansville take a 3-0 lead in the second inning.  Taylor Howe opened the scoring in the top of the first.  After hitting a leadoff triple, Howe scored on a wild pitch.  After Gracie Hollingsworth saw the Racers down in order in the bottom of the first, the Purple Aces offense got back to work in the second.

Niki Bode’s 2-run single gave UE a 3-0 lead in the second.  Miriah Powell and Zoe Frossard both scored on the play.  A squeeze play saw MSU get on the board with a single run in the fourth before two more runs, including a solo home run, tied the game in the fifth.

Three hits by the Racers in the sixth gave them their first lead of the game at 4-3.  Down to its final three outs, the Aces looked for a rally in the seventh.  Kynadea Warner and Howe both reached on singles before a walk by Morgan Adams loaded the bases with one out.  Unfortunately, two pop outs ended the contest.

UE completed the game with six hits including two by Howe.  Hollingsworth gave up three earned runs in 4 2/3 frames while Kate Ridgway gave up a run in the final 1 1/3 innings.  She took the loss.

Next weekend, Evansville travels to Bradley for a 3-game set.

* Softball falls to Racers in road doubleheader

MURRAY, Ky. – Murray State staged a pair of late rallies to take both ends of the doubleheader against the University of Evansville softball team on Friday afternoon at Racer Field.

Game 1 – Murray State 6, UE 4

Trailing by a 4-2 margin the top of the 7th, the Purple Aces rallied to tie the game, but a 2-run walk-off home run gave the Racers the victory in the seventh.

Taylor Howe opened the scoring in the top of the third.  After hitting a double to begin the inning, she scored on a fielder’s choice by Eliza Piggott.  Murray State fought back, scoring three times in the bottom of the third.  Miriah Powell hit a solo home run in the fourth to cut the deficit in half and make it a 3-2 game.

Murray State added an insurance run on a sacrifice in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 2-run game entering the 7th.  Morgan Adams and Piggott opened the inning with walks before both advanced on a sac bunt by Zoe Frossard.  Brooke Voss brought in pinch runner Dori Brown on a sac fly before Powell’s single to center tied the game to score Keghan Pye.

Just when it looked like UE seized the momentum, the Racers opened the bottom of the 7th with a walk before Hannah Sutton’s home run ended the game.  UE finished the game with seven hits as Kynadee Warner went 3-4.  Gracie Hollingsworth suffered the loss throwing the complete game.  She gave up six runs, four of which were earned.

Game 2 – Murray State 5, UE 2

Scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Racers broke a 2-2 tie to finish with a 5-2 win in the second end of the doubleheader.

UE loaded the bases in the top of the first looking to take an early lead as Taylor Howe doubled with Niki Bode and Morgan Adams walking to load the bags with no outs.  Two runners were thrown out at home before a fly out ended the inning.  Murray State broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to jump in front.

The score remained two until the top of the fourth when the Purple Aces tied it up.  Zoe Frossard scored on an error before Kynadee Warner scored on a double from Howe.  Looking to retake the lead, MSU loaded the bases with two outs.  Miriah Powell made a huge diving catch to end the inning and keep it tied.

Unfortunately, the Racers offense got back to work in the sixth scoring three runs as UE committed a pair of errors.  Evansville went down in order in the top of the 7th to end the game.

Kate Ridgway made the start and threw the complete game.  Five runs scored but just one was earned.  UE had four hits in the game with two coming from Howe.  The Aces look to take the third game on Saturday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.

* Flaherty helps UE baseball to walk-off win against Indiana State

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Graduate pinch hitter Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) was the walk-off hero for the second time this year at German American Bank Field in the University of Evansville baseball team’s 6-5 win over the Indiana State Sycamores.

After struggling at the plate in the first game of the series, the Purple Aces offense answered with eight hits and six runs on Saturday. UE tied the series with the late-game victory as Flaherty added his third home run of the year. Lead-off hitter and centerfielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) had a big night for Evansville as he led the team with three hits and two RBIs.

"Flaherty had the big walk-off to get us back in this series tonight,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll. “[Starter Kevin] Reed was outstanding on the mound as well. Tomorrow is a great opportunity to create some momentum to the season!"

The bats were hot early for both sides, as the teams' matched results in the first inning, with one run scored and one left on base. The only difference between the top and the bottom was that the Aces got two hits instead of one from Rumsey and designated hitter Brodie Peart (Markham, Ontario). It was a similar second inning, as Indiana State added a run on two hits and a fielder’s choice to go up 2-1.

UE was able to answer back and then some in the bottom of the second as the team scored in its first two at-bats. Right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) was hit by a pitch for the first time to lead off the second while catcher Evan Waggoner (Bedford, Ind. / Bedford North Lawrence HS) put a double down the left field line, scoring Taubert. Waggoner took second base on a wild pitch and scored Evansville’s second run of the inning on a single from Rumsey.

The Aces kept the lead for just over an inning as both offenses went down in order in the third inning. But the Sycamores were able to answer in the top of the fourth as their first baseman hit a two-run shot with two outs on the board. Indiana State had the 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the fourth, but UE again pulled out a two-run inning to get back in front.

Similar to the second inning, Taubert was hit by a pitch to take first to lead off Evansville. The next two Aces batters flew out to left as UE created some two-out magic of its own.

Third baseman Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Forest Park HS) hit a long single up the middle, giving Taubert enough time to score the tying run. Howard stole second for his fifth steal of the year during Rumsey’s turn at the plate. After watching two pitches miss the zone, Rumsey scorched a ball into right center as Howard crossed home for the go-ahead run.

Neither team found the score sheet again over the next four innings. Evansville’s defense turned double plays in three straight innings while starting pitcher Kevin Reed (Martinsville, Ind. / Martinsville HS) and reliever Drew Fieger (Fort Mitchell, Ky. / Lincoln Trail CC) combined for five strikeouts. But it was a different story in the ninth inning as the Sycamores had a lead-off single become a run to tie the game.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Aces were looking for the game-winning run. And they got it in their first at-bat of the inning. Flaherty faced four pitches before he crushed a ball past the left field wall to give UE the 6-5 victory over Indiana State.

Fieger earned the win for Evansville, improving his record to 2-3 and dropping his ERA to an even 8.00. While starter Reed had another great performance on the mound for the Aces. Through seven innings of work, he scattered eight hits with four runs, two walks, and four strikeouts to bring his season ERA back under six to 5.94. UE also had five other batters record a hit on Friday aside from Rumsey, with four also bringing in RBIs.

The series winner will be decided on Saturday evening as Evansville and the Sycamores battle on national television. The 5 p.m. game will be broadcast on ESPNU for the Aces' first-ever home game on a network broadcast from Charles H. Braun Stadium. The rubber match will feature junior right-hander Owen Byberg (Barrie, Ontario) for UE as he leads the team in ERA at only 4.57.

* Deverman gem not enough to power Aces baseball past Indiana State

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville baseball team didn’t find its offense in a 2-0 loss to the Indiana State Sycamores on Thursday night.

The Purple Aces had a conference-low four hits against Indiana State in a pitcher's duel to begin the three-game series. UE starting pitcher Kenton Deverman (Dardenne Prairie, Mo. / Fort Zumwalt West HS) had his second-longest outing of MVC action, pitching seven innings, scattering seven hits, allowing two runs, not allowing a walk, and striking out seven batters. Second baseman Drew McConnell (Blue Springs, Mo. / Blue Springs HS) led Evansville on offense as the only batter with multiple hits, connecting in the second and fifth innings while also reaching base a third time on a fielder’s choice.

The first third of the game went by quickly as the two starting pitchers combined for seven strikeouts and two hits in three innings of work. The Aces had the first hit of the game as left fielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) had a stand-up double to left in his first at-bat of the night. UE also picked up singles in the second and fourth innings from McConnell and first baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley).

It took until the fifth inning for Indiana State to score one of the only two runs of the game. After throwing five strikeouts and retiring 13 batters, Deverman gave up a solo home run to the Sycamores' lead-off hitter. Indiana State held on to the 1-0 lead despite Evansville threatening with two on in the bottom of the fifth.

The Sycamores doubled their lead in the top of the seventh on back-to-back hits from their first baseman and right fielder. The 2-0 lead held over the next three innings as the Aces were only able to get runners on base three more times in the final frames.

UE will look to bounce back on Friday night under the lights at Charles H. Braun Stadium. Evansville and Indiana State will meet in game two of the series starting at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18.
