Dr. Liam Lanigan to speak at the Mel Peterson Literary Forum, Friday April 11 at 7:00
|
|

The English & Creative Writing Department is pleased to welcome Dr. Liam Lanigan as this year's speaker at the Mel Peterson Literary Forum this Friday at 7:00pm in SOBA 162. The title of Dr. Lanigan's talk is: “Keeping things out of proportion: Scale and hope in the works of Ursula K Le Guin.”
Speaking at the 2014 National Book Awards, Ursula Le Guin noted “We live in capitalism, its power seems inescapable – but then, so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings…Hard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see…other ways of being.” While Le Guin’s work is frequently characterized as utopian, it is notable for its depiction of underlying ambiguities, tensions, and contradictions even in its most sympathetically rendered societies, and for its embedding of utopian ideals within the wider spatial networks through which ideas and power are disseminated. Her works depict vast spatial and temporal scales that suggest the seemingly limitless power of contemporary capitalism, yet their multivocal literary forms suggest the capacity of people to effect change. This talk will explore the ways that Le Guin uses spatial and temporal scale to convey not just a sense of utopian possibility, but the necessity of our own agency in the process of its coming into being.
Liam Lanigan, PhD, is Associate Professor of British and European literature at Governors State University, Chicago. He received his PhD from University College Dublin and is a former Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at University College Cork, and National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at the Institute of Irish Studies, University of Notre Dame. He is the Vice President of the Association for Literary Urban Studies, and Secretary of the MLA Irish Language and Literature Forum. Lanigan is the author of James Joyce, Urban Planning, and Irish Modernism: Dublins of the Future (Palgrave 2014), as well as co-editor of the forthcoming edited collection Urban Discourses of Crisis, Resilience, and Resistance: Cities Under Stress (Palgrave 2025). He has written extensively on the city, globalization, finance, and migrancy in contemporary Irish and British literature, including for journals such as Modern Language Quarterly and Irish University Review.

Faculty Retirement Tree Planting Ceremony on April 27
|
|
The UE community is welcome to attend the Faculty Retirement Tree Planting Ceremony that will take place on Sunday, April 27. This event will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Koch Center’s Koch South Lawn. The following faculty members will be honored at the event:
- Lora Becker- Professor of Psychology
- Ralph Larmann- Professor of Art
- Rob Montgomery- Professor Emeritus of Marketing
- Gregory Rike- Assistant Professor of Music
- Mark Shifflet- Professor of Communication
Please join us to wish them well in their retirement.

Lora Becker, Professor of Psychology
Dr. Lora Becker earned her PhD and master’s degrees from the State University of New York (Binghamton), dual bachelor’s from Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio) and joined the UE faculty in 1999. Since joining the University, Dr. Becker has written numerous research articles and posters with undergraduate students and supported this research with a variety of granting sources including the Ball Brothers Venture Grant, the Mead Johnson Nutritional Grant, UE's Global Scholar grant and several UExplore Research Grants, ARSAF grants and ADVANTAGE Undergraduate Research grants. All of these research endeavors were sought in order to give students the opportunity to practice science on their way to their careers in medicine, teaching, and research. Her impact was felt on campus through several director positions over the past 20 years including the Neuroscience Program, the Summer Reading Program, the Major Discovery Program, the Academic Assessment Committee, and General Education. She spent a term as Faculty Senate Chair where she established meetings between Faculty Senate Executive board and the President's Cabinet. Her committee work is too numerous to list. Dr. Becker was the second recipient of the Eykamp Prize for extraordinary contributions by UE faculty to the University. She was also awarded the Mentor of the Year award from Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (or FUN). Nationally, she served as president of Nu Rho Psi, the honor society for neuroscience, overseeing the first Indiana chapter of the organization established at UE. She served as treasurer of FUN and spent twelve years on the Board of Directors for Phi Kappa Phi, the largest interdisciplinary honors society, culminating her time serving as President in 2024. But through it all, it was the classroom that motivated Dr. Becker the most. She built several courses in the neuroscience program and now retires having taught every neuroscience course that the University of Evansville offers. What a great 26 years!

Ralph Larmann, Professor of Art
Professor Larmann has taught painting, drawing, computer graphics, graphic design, games design, and art general education courses, exhibits paintings nationally, and writes art texts for college and advanced placement high school art programs worldwide. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month- how can you participate in programming?
|
|
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence and supporting survivors. Sexual assault is a pervasive issue on college campuses, with 13% of all students experiencing rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation. Among undergraduate students, 26.4% of females and 6.8% of males experience these forms of sexual violence. Members of historically marginalized communities face even higher rates of sexual violence.
It's crucial that we come together to address this issue and promote a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
We have several events planned throughout the month to educate and engage our community:
- Healthy Relationships Program: Join us on April 10th from 5:50-6:45pm in SOBA 71 to learn about building and maintaining healthy relationships.
- Library Display: Visit the library to explore a curated display on sexual assault awareness and prevention.
- Interactive Exhibit: Engage with an interactive exhibit in the Multicultural Student Commons that highlights the impact of sexual violence and ways to support survivors.
- Lunch and Learn: Attend a session with Nursing professor Chantal Wood on Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners on April 29th from 12-1pm in the Multicultural Student Commons. This session will provide valuable insights into the role of these specialized nurses in supporting survivors and collecting evidence.
We encourage all community members to participate in these activities and to always ensure that they obtain clear and enthusiastic consent from their partners. Let's work together to create a campus culture where everyone feels safe and respected. |

UE Professor Makes History as the First Muslim to Have Two Prestigious Mathematics Awards Named in His Honor
|
|
The University of Evansville (UE) proudly announces that Professor Mohammad K. Azarian has made history as the first Muslim and the first Iranian American mathematician to have two prestigious mathematics awards named in his honor by the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
These honors, established under his name, recognize his outstanding contributions to research, problem creation, and his unparalleled service to the mathematics community.
His extensive academic work includes the publication of 47 papers, 87 problems, and over 60 presentations at international, national, and reginal meetings and conferences. Professor Azarian served four years as a Discipline Peer Reviewer for the Fulbright Scholar Program (2015-2018) and published 78 reviews in the AMS's Mathematical Reviews (MathSciNet) and the European Mathematical Society's zbMATH Open (Zentralblatt MATH).
The Mohammad K. Azarian Prize for Mathematical Reviews Reviewers, established by AMS, honors mathematicians who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to the peer review field. This prize will recognize notable achievement by peer reviewers, past, present, and future. By providing quality reviews of scholarly articles, reviewers provide a vital link for researchers between established research and works in progress. The inaugural award will be presented at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, D.C., in January 2026, when AMS and 16 other mathematics organizations will gather for their joint annual meeting.
Professor Azarian, a lifetime member of the AMS since 1983, has been an active force in the mathematical community for decades. His contributions include serving on the Human Rights of Mathematicians Committee and chairing the committee in 2023. Additionally, he has represented AMS on the American Association for the Advancement of Science Human Rights Coalition.
Similarly, the Mohammad K. Azarian Scholar Award, established by MAA, celebrates excellence in mathematical problem creation. This award recognizes individuals whose original, thought-provoking problems challenge and inspire the mathematical community.
Honorees will be selected from contributors to MAA publicationsThe American Mathematical Monthly, Mathematics Magazine, The College Mathematics Journal, and Math Horizons-as well as from problem creators featured in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC), American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), the Putnam Competition, and the Mathematical Olympiad Program (MOP). By spotlighting outstanding problem creators, this award reinforces the vital role of problem-creation in advancing mathematical thinking and education. The inaugural award will be presented in August at MathFest 2025, in Sacramento, California. Professor Azarian will be a speaker at this conference.
Professor Azarian has been a member of MAA since 1986, with a distinguished record of service. His numerous contributions include serving on the Executive Board of the Indiana Section of the MAA (2001-2007), where one of his responsibilities was overseeing the Indiana College Mathematics Competitions for all of Indiana's colleges and universities. He was honored with the Mathematical Association of America-Indiana Distinguished Service Award in 2017.
With these two honors, Professor Azarian becomes the first Muslim, the first Iranian American, and the third mathematician to have two distinguished mathematics awards named in his honor by AMS and MAA, the two largest, oldest, and most respected mathematics organizations in the United States. These recognitions underscore his lasting impact on mathematical scholarship and problem creation.
The University of Evansville congratulates Professor Azarian on this remarkable achievement and looks forward to celebrating his contributions to the global mathematical community.

UE goes for its third series win in Valley action over the weekend at Illinois State. Last season, Evansville swept the Redbirds for the first time since 2022 to get the series within five games. The Aces also succeeded over Illinois State in postseason play with two run-rule wins during the MVC Tournament.
It'll be a different series this year, as the Redbirds have had more success in 2024. Illinois State has a 15-16 overall record and a 6-3 conference record to be tied for second in the league with Southern Illinois. The Redbirds had a big win to start March as they defeated 25th-ranked Oklahoma State in their series opener 12-6. Illinois State did drop the next two games of the series for its first-ranked win of the year and its first win over a ranked non-conference opponent since 2023. The Redbirds have the third best offense in the Valley at a .298 average, led by junior outfielder Daniel Pacella with a .407 average. Pacella leads the MVC in batting average and slugging percentage at .708.
Evansville will play in its first of two nationally televised games this weekend in Normal. Sunday afternoon's matchup between the Aces and the Redbirds will be simulcast on ESPN+ and ESPNU. UE had an ESPNU game last season on the road as well at Indiana State when the Sycamores were ranked 14th in the nation. Evansville will then have its first nationally televised game at home since 2018 when the Saturday game of its series with Dallas Baptist was on ESPNU.
With two steals against Butler on Tuesday, senior outfielder Ty Rumsey has the most stolen bases in a season for the Aces since 2012. Rumsey currently has 21 steals midway through the season to lead the MVC. He is also 20th in the nation in stolen bags while being 27th in stolen bases per game. Rumsey has a ways to go to take the season record for stolen bases from Eric Stamets, who had 43 in the 2010 season.
Sophomore left-hander Kenton Deverman pitched his first complete game of the season over the weekend. Deverman spent eight innings on the mound in the opening game of UE's series at UIC. Through eight innings of work, Deverman allowed seven hits, four runs, only two earned runs, walked a batter, and struck out seven. With only five walks on the season, Deverman leads the MVC in walks allowed per nine innings at 1.40 to be 20th in the nation. He is also 59th in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 4.67 to lead Valley pitchers. |
