* Dr. Liam Lanigan to speak at the Mel Peterson Literary Forum, Friday April 11 at 7:00

The English & Creative Writing Department is pleased to welcome Dr. Liam Lanigan as this year's speaker at the Mel Peterson Literary Forum this Friday at 7:00pm in SOBA 162. The title of Dr. Lanigan's talk is:  “Keeping things out of proportion: Scale and hope in the works of Ursula K Le Guin.”

Speaking at the 2014 National Book Awards, Ursula Le Guin noted “We live in capitalism, its power seems inescapable – but then, so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings…Hard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see…other ways of being.” While Le Guin’s work is frequently characterized as utopian, it is notable for its depiction of underlying ambiguities, tensions, and contradictions even in its most sympathetically rendered societies, and for its embedding of utopian ideals within the wider spatial networks through which ideas and power are disseminated. Her works depict vast spatial and temporal scales that suggest the seemingly limitless power of contemporary capitalism, yet their multivocal literary forms suggest the capacity of people to effect change. This talk will  explore the ways that Le Guin uses spatial and temporal scale to convey not just a sense of utopian possibility, but the necessity of our own agency in the process of its coming into being.

Liam Lanigan, PhD, is Associate Professor of British and European
literature at Governors State University, Chicago. He received his PhD
from University College Dublin and is a former Irish Research Council
Postdoctoral Fellow at University College Cork, and National Endowment
for the Humanities Fellow at the Institute of Irish Studies, University of
Notre Dame. He is the Vice President of the Association for Literary Urban
Studies, and Secretary of the MLA Irish Language and Literature Forum.
Lanigan is the author of James Joyce, Urban Planning, and Irish Modernism:
Dublins of the Future (Palgrave 2014), as well as co-editor of the forthcoming
edited collection Urban Discourses of Crisis, Resilience, and Resistance:
Cities Under Stress (Palgrave 2025). He has written extensively on the
city, globalization, finance, and migrancy in contemporary Irish and British
literature, including for journals such as Modern Language Quarterly and Irish

In 1970, Clark Kimberling finished his Ph.D in mathematics at the Illinois Institute of Technology and joined the UE faculty. * Minimalism in Music: Performance of Terry Riley's "In C"

On Tuesday, April 15 at 7:30 in Wheeler Concert Hall, come experience a performance of Terry Riley’s "In C," a minimalist masterpiece that changed the course of music history.

Written in 1964, "In C" is a seminal work in minimalist music, known for its repetitive, shifting patterns that unfold over time. Riley's use of 53 short modular motifs, combined with the flexibility of interpretation, allows each performance to be unique. The piece is open-ended, with performers choosing when to move to the next pattern, creating a rich, evolving soundscape. “In C” provided the foundation for the Minimalist movement, including, in addition to Terry Riley, the composers Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and John Adams.

Don't miss the chance to experience this pioneering piece and feel its transformative influence on contemporary music.

Info You Should Know

* April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month- how can you participate in programming?

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence and supporting survivors. Sexual assault is a pervasive issue on college campuses, with 13% of all students experiencing rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation. Among undergraduate students, 26.4% of females and 6.8% of males experience these forms of sexual violence. Members of historically marginalized communities face even higher rates of sexual violence.

It's crucial that we come together to address this issue and promote a safe and respectful environment for everyone.

We have several events planned throughout the month to educate and engage our community:

  • Healthy Relationships Program: Join us on April 10th from 5:50-6:45pm in SOBA 71 to learn about building and maintaining healthy relationships.
  • Library Display: Visit the library to explore a curated display on sexual assault awareness and prevention.
  • Interactive Exhibit: Engage with an interactive exhibit in the Multicultural Student Commons that highlights the impact of sexual violence and ways to support survivors.
  • Lunch and Learn: Attend a session with Nursing professor Chantal Wood on Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners on April 29th from 12-1pm in the Multicultural Student Commons. This session will provide valuable insights into the role of these specialized nurses in supporting survivors and collecting evidence.

We encourage all community members to participate in these activities and to always ensure that they obtain clear and enthusiastic consent from their partners. Let's work together to create a campus culture where everyone feels safe and respected.

* University of Evansville's School of Education Earns International Literacy Association National Recognition

Faculty in UE's School of Education engaged in a self-study to evaluate the effectiveness of their elementary and intermediate classroom programs in preparing future educators. The self-study was submitted to the International Literacy Association (ILA) for evaluation. The International Literacy Association National Recognition is awarded to outstanding licensure, certificate, and endorsement programs that prepare literacy professionals.

We are proud to announce that the University of Evansville has become the fifth higher education institution in the United States to earn ILA National Recognition for program alignment to rigorous ILA standards. Only fifteen universities in the United States have earned this distinction, and the University of Evansville is the first university in Indiana to qualify for this honor.

Earning ILA National Recognition demonstrates that UE's School of Education adheres to a rigorous set of standards for preparing literacy professionals, setting us apart from similar programs. This seal of approval, granted only by ILA, shows that the program at UE meets or exceeds ILA's high standards for excellence.

Special thanks are extended to our Dean, Dr. Andy Lampkins, and our Program Chair, Dr. Shari Millikan, for their enduring support and encouragement throughout this long process. We are thankful for your guidance and leadership!

* Hollingsworth's gem helps Aces split at Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Gracie Hollingsworth tossed a complete game shutout to lead the University of Evansville softball team to a 6-0 win over Indiana State in game two of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Price Field.  The Sycamores opened the day with a 5-3 victory.

Game 1 – Indiana State 5, UE 3

Indiana State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Evansville’s offense came alive in the top of the third, scoring three times to take its first lead.  Abby Bode, Kynadee Warner, and Jess Willsey each singled to load the bases for Morgan Adams.  Her double off the wall in center field plated two runs to tie the game.  Miriah Powell followed with a sac bunt that brought in the third run to put UE in front.

With two outs in the fourth, Bode and Warner both reached on hits once again before being stranded on base.  The Sycamores also left two batters on in their half of the fourth.  In the fifth, the Aces looked to add to the lead once again.  With one out, Adams and Powell walked before a pair of fly outs ended the threat.

In the sixth, the Sycamores regained the lead.  After the tying run scored on an error, Madison Poulson hit a 2-run single to put ISU in front at 5-3.  Down to its final three outs, UE put runners on as Jess Willsey walked and Callie Meinel hit a 2-out single.  Unfortunately, a strikeout ended the game with ISU winning by a score of 5-3.

UE recorded eight hits with Bode and Warner finishing with two apiece.  Kate Ridgway threw the full six innings with five runs scoring, two of which were earned.  She fell to 5-8 on the season.

Game 2 – UE 6, Indiana State 0

Gracie Hollingsworth struck out eight batters while allowing just four hits in a complete game shutout win over Indiana State.

Evansville broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third, scoring three runs to take the lead.  All of the action came with two outs as the Aces picked up three hits while taking advantage of two Sycamore errors.  Taylor Howe began the stretch with a single while Keghan Pye followed with a bunt single.

Howe and Pye would both score on an ISU error.  After Willsey reached on an error, Morgan Adams came to the plate and launched a long double that scored Willsey to make it a 3-0 game.  In the top of the fifth, it was Adams striking again.  The MVC leader in home runs added another to her tally, launching a 3-run shot to double the lead and make it a 6-0 game.

With UE in front, Hollingsworth took care of business in the circle.  She allowed just four hits, struck out eight batters and did not walk a single batter.  She picked up her sixth win of the season.  Adams and Kynadee Warner had two hits apiece as the Aces finished the game with nine.  Adams went 2-4 with a home run and four RBI.

This weekend, the Aces are back home to face Murray State for a 3-game series.

* Rumsey adds 21st stolen base of the season in loss to Butler

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville baseball team wasn’t able to keep up with a red-hot offensive night from the Butler Bulldogs.

The Purple Aces took an early lead at German American Bank Field but didn’t hold on in a 17-5 loss to Butler. Senior infielder Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) was the only UE batter with multiple hits off the Bulldogs on a single in the third and fifth innings. While senior outfielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) stole his 20th and 21st bases of the season for the most by an Evansville runner since Eric Staments had 30 in 2012.

The Bulldogs got a walk to begin Tuesday’s contest, but the next three batters went down in order as starting pitcher Drew Fieger (Fort Mitchell, Ky. / Lincoln Trail CC) added two strikeouts.  The Aces offense led off with a single from Rumsey in the first. During the next at-bat, Rumsey stole two bases and scored the first run of the game on a throwing error from Butler’s catcher.

UE then had its next two batters reach base with a walk and a single. A sacrifice fly after Evansville’s second single scored outfielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) to put the Aces up 2-0 early. The Bulldogs offense responded in the second, scoring a run on Fieger with a double and a sacrifice fly. But the senior right-hander added his third strikeout of the night to end the inning.

The second inning ended shortly after as UE went down in order. Butler soon took the lead, scoring two runs on a hit and an error in the top of the third. Evansville tied the game back up in the bottom frame as Longmeier led off with a walk. The outfielder took second on the Aces' next at-bat on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a passed ball during UE’s third AB of the inning. McGinnis hit his first single of the night in the third, putting the base knock into left field to score Longmeier as the tying run.

After Evansville tied the game at three runs in the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs' offense exploded for five runs in the fourth. Butler batted through its lineup in the inning with two hits and four walks to take an 8-3 lead. The Aces got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as Rumsey hit a sacrifice fly on their fourth at-bat of the inning. The sac fly scored shortstop Drew McConnell for UE’s fourth run of the game.

The Bulldogs extended their lead in the fifth with another five-run inning that went through their order. Butler centerfielder David Ayers started and ended the top of the fifth with a ground out and a fly out. In between Ayers ABs, the Bulldogs connected on four hits, a walk, and two hit-by-pitches to make it a 13-4 contest.

Evansville had its longest inning on offense in the bottom of the fifth. The Aces had seven batters come up to the plate with two hits from McGinnis and catcher Evan Waggoner (Bedford, Ind. / North Lawrence Bedford HS). UE also added two walks to score a fifth run before heading to the top of the sixth.

Butler’s defense shut down Evansville’s offense for the final two innings of the game while adding four runs in the top of the seventh. The Aces went down swinging in the bottom half of the frame to end the game at a 17-5 final. UE returns to conference action this weekend at Illinois State. Evansville’s first game in Normal is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 11.

* Aces baseball returns home for midweek with Butler

The Purple Aces return home with a 5-4 Missouri Valley Conference record after dropping their first series of the year to the UIC Flames. UE kept all three games close as the weekend decisions were decided by a combined five runs. Evansville took a one-run win on Saturday afternoon in the longest contest of the weekend at three hours and 21 minutes. Catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) was again the ninth inning hero for the Aces with an RBI single to score the winning run in the top of the ninth.

UE welcomes Butler to German American Bank Field for the series' 69th all-time meeting on Tuesday. Evansville has the overall advantage going into tomorrow's game with 52 wins over the Bulldogs' 17 since their first meeting in 1951. The Aces haven't lost a game to Butler since March 2021, when they dropped the second game of a three-game series at GAB Field.

The Bulldogs come into this week's game with an overall 10-21 record and a 0-3 Big East record. Butler is on a four-game losing skid after dropping all three to Xavier in the first conference series of the season. The Bulldogs did have a big weekend against Northern Illinois to end March, taking three of four games on their home field. Butler is led at the plate by two players with over a .400 batting average in pitcher/infielder Jack Bello and outfielder Jack Moroknek at .417 and .40,9 respectively. Bello leads the team in batting average, doubles, and triples, while Moroknek leads the Bulldogs in hits, home runs, and RBIs.

Rumsey also had a strong weekend on the base paths, stealing two bases in three games. He currently leads the MVC in stolen bases and is 26th in the nation with 19 steals. While in the field through three games, Rumsey had five putouts and no errors, which brought his overall fielding percentage up to .989.
