  • Ralph Larmann- Professor of Art
  • Rob Montgomery- Professor Emeritus of Marketing

Lora Becker, Professor of Psychology

Dr. Lora Becker earned her PhD and master’s degrees from the State University of New York (Binghamton), dual bachelor’s from Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio) and joined the UE faculty in 1999. Since joining the University, Dr. Becker has written numerous research articles and posters with undergraduate students and supported this research with a variety of granting sources including the Ball Brothers Venture Grant, the Mead Johnson Nutritional Grant, UE's Global Scholar grant and several UExplore Research Grants, ARSAF grants and ADVANTAGE Undergraduate Research grants. All of these research endeavors were sought in order to give students the opportunity to practice science on their way to their careers in medicine, teaching, and research. Her impact was felt on campus through several director positions over the past 20 years including the Neuroscience Program, the Summer Reading Program, the Major Discovery Program, the Academic Assessment Committee, and General Education. She spent a term as Faculty Senate Chair where she established meetings between Faculty Senate Executive board and the President's Cabinet. Her committee work is too numerous to list. Dr. Becker was the second recipient of the Eykamp Prize for extraordinary contributions by UE faculty to the University. She was also awarded the Mentor of the Year award from Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (or FUN). Nationally, she served as president of Nu Rho Psi, the honor society for neuroscience, overseeing the first Indiana chapter of the organization established at UE. She served as treasurer of FUN and spent twelve years on the Board of Directors for Phi Kappa Phi, the largest interdisciplinary honors society, culminating her time serving as President in 2024. But through it all, it was the classroom that motivated Dr. Becker the most. She built several courses in the neuroscience program and now retires having taught every neuroscience course that the University of Evansville offers. What a great 26 years!

* Clark Kimberling to give Stankey-Andiron Lecture, April 10, 4pm

The Morgan Whitaker Stankey Andiron Lecture Series

We are pleased to announce that the next lecture in this series will be delivered by Dr. Clark Kimberling, on Thursday, April 10 at 4 PM in Koch 100. The title of the lecture is :  “From Philadelphia to New Harmony, 1826-1832

In 1970, Clark Kimberling finished his Ph.D in mathematics at the Illinois Institute of Technology and joined the UE faculty. His interests in New Harmony stem from the finding of a certain fossil in Evansville in 1854 and subsequent involvement of scientists in nearby New Harmony. He then started a UE-based website, "New Harmony Scientists, Educators, Writers, and Artists".  In 2000, he started the internationally acclaimed  UE-based "Encyclopedia of Triangle Centers", and 2024, he received the Sadelle and Sydney Berger Award for Scholarship.

Synopsis:

In 1826, the passengers on the "Boatload of Knowledge" moved to New Harmony, Indiana, and established a scientific and educational community. Under the leadership of William Maclure, President of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, and Madame Marie Fretageot, the former Philadelphians made important contributions to the natural sciences, arts, and education. This lecture will describe the lives and works of Maclure, Thomas Say, Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, Madame Fretageot, and their copperplate engraver, Cornelius Tiebout.

* Minimalism in Music: Performance of Terry Riley's "In C"

On Tuesday, April 15 at 7:30 in Wheeler Concert Hall, come experience a performance of Terry Riley’s "In C," a minimalist masterpiece that changed the course of music history.

Written in 1964, "In C" is a seminal work in minimalist music, known for its repetitive, shifting patterns that unfold over time. Riley's use of 53 short modular motifs, combined with the flexibility of interpretation, allows each performance to be unique. The piece is open-ended, with performers choosing when to move to the next pattern, creating a rich, evolving soundscape. “In C” provided the foundation for the Minimalist movement, including, in addition to Terry Riley, the composers Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and John Adams.

Don't miss the chance to experience this pioneering piece and feel its transformative influence on contemporary music.

* UE THEATRE ALUMNUS, DYLAN FREDERICK '14, RETURNS TO CAMPUS APRIL 1 & 2 TO SCREEN AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY AMERICAN THEATER

The University of Evansville (UE) Department of Theatre is proud to announce alumnus Dylan Frederick ’14 will be returning to campus to screen AMERICAN THEATER which recently won the Feature Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the Slamdance Film Festival. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, and Wednesday, April 2, 2025, in the John David Lutz Theatre Lab. The 90-minute film will be followed by a Q&A with Frederick.

“AMERICAN THEATER follows artists who are on the conservative right, but our ambition is that the film can reach audiences across lines of difference,” says co-director Dylan Frederick. “In recent years, there has been a concerted effort to cast half of the country as fundamentally evil in the eyes of the other. AMERICAN THEATER aims to briefly interrupt that cynical strategy and offer audiences a new way to see ourselves in this current political moment—as an entire nation of actors desperate for direction.”

Once nationally celebrated for his large-scale outdoor musical productions at Serenbe Playhouse (TITANIC performed on an actual sinking ship or MISS SAIGON with a real helicopter landing) Brian Clowdus’s theater career came to a halt in 2020 amid extensive public allegations of unsafe working conditions, racism, and harassment. In the wake of these allegations, Clowdus reinvented himself as a MAGA Republican. AMERICAN THEATER follows Clowdus and his newly assembled troupe of actors as they rehearse their allegorical cancel culture musical–THE SALEM EXPERIENCE.

“The movie is a salute to the hardworking cast of THE SALEM EXPERIENCE,” says codirector Nicholas Clark. “They tried their very best to put on a new musical in the middle of the woods and under challenging circumstances. Musicals are unbelievably hard to make, and this one was particularly chaotic. Our idea for the project was to bring an entirely observational approach to documenting their artistic process without interruption. In this way, we were able to authentically capture a rehearsal room immersed in work.”

“At the center of this project is a complex relationship between a director and his cast which we feel reflects aspects of the dynamic between Trump and his supporters. That rehearsal dynamic has helped us understand the current national trend toward rightwing authoritarian leaders and those who follow them,” says producer Laura Hilliard.

Seating is limited and tickets are free to the public. Reserve your seat by calling the UE Theatre ticket office at 812.488.2031, Monday through Friday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Sympathy to...

* Former UE Associate Professor of Philosophy Passes Away

Remembering Dr. Leaf Kretz: A Fearless Advocate and Inspirational Educator   The University is saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Leaf Kretz, a former associate professor of philosophy from 2013 to 2022.    Leaf welcomed everyone with open arms. They were a strong and fearless voice against injustice and always an advocate for those less fortunate. They deeply cared about their students and inspired so many by making them think more deeply about the world. Time and again, students’ eyes would light up at the mention of Leaf’s name, exclaiming, “Dr. Kretz is AMAZING.” To put it simply, Leaf was committed to enacting positive change and making the world a better place—not only through their scholarship on hope but through all the people whose lives they personally touched. They were intense and passionate, yet also incredibly genuine and caring. Leaf was deeply committed to the physical and emotional well-being of their students. They truly cared about each and every one of them. Their optimism was not just a feeling but a choice and a form of resistance. As their obituary so aptly states, Leaf carried immense hope for a more equitable and loving world and worked tirelessly to make it real. Their commitment was unrelenting, and their optimism never naïve—it was a discipline, a belief in the possibility of a better future.   “They made us better—more honest, more curious, more human.”   In their 2019 TEDxEvansville talk at UE, Leaf shared a vision for justice and equality, saying: “…I’d like for us to think for just a second about what a wonderful world it would be if accidents of birth didn’t dictate whether you had access to things like higher education, a roof over your head, food in your belly, [or] decent health care.” (Watch here)   Leaf was a fantastic teacher, mentor, and friend. Their scholarship of hope is more desperately needed now than ever.   Dr. Kretz deeply influenced the Department of Philosophy and Religion, fostering critical inquiry, ethical reflection, and a commitment to social responsibility. As one of the founders of the Ethics and Social Change major (now Social Justice), they played a pivotal role in shaping a program that continues to inspire students to engage in meaningful social change. Their legacy lives on in the values of this program and in the countless lives they touched. Their full obituary is available here: https://dartefuneralhome.com/tribute/details/10052/Leaf-Kretz/obituary.html

* UE baseball outlasts SEMO in 7-6 win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – In the final game of a five-game homestand, the University of Evansville baseball team was able to get a one-run win over the Southeast Missouri Redhawks.

In a back-and-forth game, the Purple Aces were able to keep the upper hand for their second straight win. UE also evened the series with SEMO in Evansville with the 7-6 victory on Tuesday. Both teams have now won four games at German American Bank Field since 1980. The Aces offense was led by first baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) and catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine), with three hits each. McGinnis had the winning hit for UE with a single up the middle in the bottom of the eighth that hit the second base bag to skip into center field and score the seventh run.

“It was a complete game for the club tonight,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll following the win. “It was our first midweek win in quite some time. We got some great efforts on the mound from multiple guys, especially Clevidence and Jack Wills on the backen,d throwing strikes and being able to land some off speeds to give us a chance. And then our defense threw up a goose egg in the error column while our offense did just enough.

“We had some back-to-back-to-back two-out RBI knocks, which was really crucial at the beginning of the game. And then Flaherty delivered the big barrel, and we had something go our way. We got a bounce that went our way as Cal McGinnis hit off the second base bag for the go-ahead run. I’m proud of our club for competing all nine innings against a quality opponent in SEMO. And hopefully, we’ll keep this momentum going when we get on the bus Thursday to go to Chicago.”

Evansville had another big start to a game on Tuesday, taking down SEMO in order while also adding two hits in the first inning. But the Redhawks scored first in the top of the second after getting a lead off double and back-to-back sacrifice plays to bring in a run. The Aces were able to get out of the frame with a fly out on the next at-bat.

UE answered the run in the bottom of the second like the Redhawk’s. Flaherty put a lead off double down the left field line. He scored for Evansville two at-bats later on back-to-back infield groundouts. The Aces were able to get another runner on base but were not able to bring him home as they headed to the third inning.

SEMO threatened in the top of the third loading the bases after a lead off strikeout. But with two outs on the board, reliever Parker MacCauley (Paducah, Ky. / Tennessee Tech) got the Redhawks swinging to get out of the jam. UE’s bats really got going in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally to take an early lead.

Left fielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) started the rally with a double into right. Evansville had a second runner on base just after as SEMO’s pitcher walked right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC). The Aces then had three straight batters hit singles to the outfield to score three runs to make it a 4-1 game. UE scored one more run in the bottom of the third on a catcher’s balk to hold a four-run lead a third of the way through the game.

The Redhawks were able to get back some of the runs from Evansville in the top of the fourth. SEMO had two batters get on base to start the inning, and a double in the third at-bat scored the first run. The Redhawks then scored two more runs to clear the bases on a groundout and a passed ball. SEMO added one more hit in the fourth, but the Aces got back-to-back outs to end the inning to keep a one-run lead.

Neither team scored over the next two innings as UE added two hits to its stat line. The Redhawks tied the game up in the top of the seventh with a solo home run. The homer was immediately answered by Evansville in the bottom of the inning as Flaherty had his second long ball in as many games. The Aces were back in front but did not stay there for long as SEMO scored another tying run on a double in the top of the eighth.

Despite the Redhawks connecting on their second tying run of the game, UE kept fighting at the plate in the bottom of the eighth. Evansville began the offensive frame with a single from third baseman Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Forest Park HS). Howard soon moved into scoring position on a wild pitch from SEMO’s closer.

The Aces got another runner on base as outfielder Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) was hit by a pitch to take first. McGinnis then came to the plate and put the winning hit through the middle to score Howard for the 7-6 score. UE’s defense held on in the top of the ninth with three straight outs as winning pitcher Jack Wills (Shelbyville, Ky. / Shelby County HS) threw his second strikeout of the night.

Seven Evansville batters had hits on Tuesday night for 13 overall hits. Along with three hits from Flaherty and McGinnis, McConnell and Howard also had multiple hits against the Redhawks. Flaherty and Howard also led the team in RBIs with two each. While Wills picked up the win ,the Aces used five pitchers on Tuesday who combined for nine hits, five earned runs, five walks, and eight strikeouts. Reliever Jack Clevidence (Ankeny, Iowa / Ankeny HS) threw the most strikeouts for UE with eight Ks.

Evansville returns to conference play this weekend with a trip up to the Windy City. The Aces will play three games at UIC starting on Friday, April 4. First pitch for the first game of the series is set for 4 p.m. in Chicago.

* Aces baseball ends homestand with SEMO on Tuesday

The Purple Aces earned another conference series win over the weekend as they hosted the Valparaiso Beacons for three games. UE took two of the three games with wins on Friday night and Sunday afternoon for a 4-2 Missouri Valley Conference record. Evansville's two wins over the weekend evened its home record to .500 as the program has only played six home games through 27 total in 2025.

The Aces end a five-game homestand on Tuesday evening against Southeast Missouri. UE played a game at SEMO three weeks ago for the first game of a home-and-home series. Evansville struggled in Cape Girardeau, losing the game to the Redhawks 17-6 in seven innings. But the Aces are looking to even the series with SEMO in Evansville with a win. Currently, the Redhawks lead by a game in the River City, but UE won the most recent meeting at German American Bank Field last year by a run.

Since the team's first meeting three weeks ago, SEMO has had eight wins and only four losses. The Redhawks are currently on a five-game winning streak after sweeping Western Illinois in conference play while taking a midweek game against Middle Tennessee and the final game of a three-game series against UT Martin. SEMO has mostly been led by their pitching staff as the Redhawks lead the country in walks allowed per nine innings by only averaging just under three walks in a full game.

UE had success hitting the long ball over the weekend against Valparaiso. Evansville had a home run in all three games facing the Beacons' pitchers while also having only the second game this season with multiple home runs on Sunday. Right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) and catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Bellarmine) had the Aces two home runs on Sunday. Flaherty's home run was his first of the season to win the game for UE in the bottom of the ninth.

Sophomore left fielder Charlie Longmeier (Seymour, Ind. / Seymour HS) has been successful at the plate in conference action. Longmeier has a .545 MVC batting average, connecting on 12 of his 22 at-bats in six games. The sophomore leads Evansville in conference games at the plate in both batting average and doubles, with six two-base hits. And with a second home run hit on the season over the weekend, Longmeier is slugging .955 against Valley opponents.

* Eliza Piggott named MVC Freshman of the Week

ST. LOUIS – After finishing the weekend series at Valparaiso with a .600 batting average, University of Evansville softball player Eliza Piggott has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week.

Aside from her .600 batting average, Piggott completed the 3-game series slugging 1.300 while reaching base 69.2% of the time.  She added a home run, five RBI, three walks, and two runs scored.

Friday’s opener against the Beacons saw Piggott go 1-3 with a walk and run scored to lead the Purple Aces to their first MVC win of the season.  She followed that up with a 2-3 effort in the second game of the doubleheader.  Piggott added two RBI and two walks while hitting an RBI triple in the 8th inning to add an insurance run.

Piggott put forth her top performance of the weekend on Saturday, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run.
