Softball splits DH against Saint Louis; Aces return home Sunday/Monday
|
|
PEORIA, Ill. – After dropping the front end of Thursday’s doubleheader against Saint Louis, the University of Evansville softball team finished with an 11-1 win in game two at the Louisville Slugger Dome.
UE is set to return home on Sunday and Monday as the schedule has been updated with three games each day. On Sunday, the Aces face Western Michigan at 11 a.m. before taking on UT Martin at 1:30 p.m. UTM and WMU will meet at 4 p.m. at Cooper Stadium. On Monday, the Skyhawks and Broncos open the day at 10 a.m. before Evansville faces WMU at 12:30 p.m. The final game will see UE and UTM meet up at 3 p.m.
Game 1 – Saint Louis 12, UE 2
Saint Louis scored eight runs in the first inning and would pull away to take a 12-2 win in Thursday’s opener. The Billikens chased UE starter Sydney Weatherford after 2/3 of an inning. Gracie Hollingsworth came in and gave up three runs in 1 1/3 frames while Elle Jarrett allowed two unearned runs in one inning. Cassidy Gall threw a scoreless final frame.
Taylor Howe got the Purple Aces on the board with a 2-run home run in the fourth before the Billikens finished with the 12-2 victory in five innings. Aside from Howe’s homer, Brooke Voss and Keghan Pye also picked up a hit.
Game 2 – UE 11, Saint Louis 1
Scoring five runs in the first inning, the Aces pulled away to take an 11-1 win in six innings to complete the doubleheader. Following hits by Taylor Howe and Zoe Frossard, Jess Willsey launched a 3-run home run to give UE a 3-0 lead. Jenna Donohoo and Keghan Pye also had RBI in the opening frame.
Two more runs scored on the fourth with Willsey picking up a sacrifice fly and Brooke Voss notching an RBI single. UE put the finishing touches on the day with a 4-run sixth inning. Taylor Howe registererd her second home run of the doubleheader to bring in Pye, who hit a leadoff single. Eliza Piggott had a 2-run fielder’s choice to push the lead to 11-0. Saint Louis scored once in the bottom of the sixth, but that was as close as they would get.
Kate Ridgway earned the win, throwing the entire six innings with one run scoring on four hits. UE accumulated 12 hits with Howe, Frossard, Willsey, and Niki Bode picking up two apiece while Keghan Pye was a perfect 3-3 with two runs scored. |

Aces women's basketball travels to MVC's Chicago area teams
|
|
The Purple Aces had only seven active players in their game on Saturday against the Illinois State Redbirds. UE kept things close through the first half with the Redbirds. But fatigue set in during the second half as Illinois State was able to pull away for a 20-point win. Evansville had a better result on Thursday night, returning to the win column with a 10-point victory over Bradley. The Aces almost had their first road win in Peoria to start 2025 but came just a basket short in the 45-43 loss. UE was able to have their revenge at home last week with a 55-45 win for a second Valley win.
Evansville will try to get its first road win of the season at either Valparaiso or UIC this weekend. The Aces dropped both home games against the Beacons and the Flames at the beginning of the month with the Valpo game being the closer of the two for UE. Facing the Beacons on Friday after playing just over two weeks ago Evansville will look to improve on its 12-point loss in Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
After winning against the Aces in Evansville, Valparaiso struggled against two of the league leaders at home with losses to Belmont and Murray State. The Beacons got back in the win column with a home game against UIC before struggling in Springfield against Missouri State on Sunday. After sweeping the road trip to Indiana State and Evansville earlier this season, Valpo is trying to claim the unofficial Hoosier State crown among the Valley's three Indiana-based schools with two wins this weekend. The Beacons are led by graduate forward Leah Earnest who became the third player in program history to hit 1,500 career points and is one of five active MVC players with 1,500 career points.
The Flames are coming off a win on the road after beating Southern Illinois 62-46 bout at the Banterra Center in Carbondale. UIC currently sits at .500 in Valley play with a 7-7 MVC record while being just under .500 overall at 10-13. The Flames will take on Indiana State on Friday before welcoming UE to Credit Union 1 Arena. Along with a big win over the Salukis, third-year head coach Ashleen Bracey secured her third consecutive double-digit win season, a feat that hadn't been accomplished since former head coach Lisa Ryckbosch (2002-11).
The Aces set a season-high on Thursday night in turnovers forced against an opponent. UE made the Braves turn the ball over 27 times in 40 minutes. The 27 turnovers were just one more than Evansville's previous high of the season, 26 turnovers against IU Columbus on December 17. With the season high in forced turnovers multiple Aces set met or set new career highs for steals in a game. Sophomore forward Maggie Hartwig (Sauk City, Wis. / Sauk Prairie HS) had a new career-high in takeaways with five steals. While guard Avery Kelley (Evansville, Ind. / Memorial HS), forward Tamesha Dozier (Louisville, Ky. / Wabash Valley), guard Logan Luebbers Palmer (Union, Ky. / Randall K. Cooper HS), and guard Júlia Palomo (La Seu d'Urgell, Spain) all hit their season high in steals.
It was a big week for Palmer as she earned her first weekly conference recognition as the MVC Freshman of the Week. She set a new career scoring high against Illinois State with 17 points to lead UE in the loss. Palmer also set a career-high in made field goals against Bradley she matched in the game against the Redbirds with 6 made field goals. Last week Palmer averaged 15.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 32 minutes of action. |

Aces baseball doesn't overcome Lipscomb comeback in extra innings
|
|
NASHVILLE – The University of Evansville baseball team held the lead twice on Tuesday afternoon but was unable to stop a furious comeback by the Lipscomb Bison in an 11-10 loss in 13 innings.
The Purple Aces bats came alive on Tuesday after a quiet weekend in Little Rock. But struggles on defense and on the mound didn’t get UE across the finish line to its first win of 2025. Starters Ty Rumsey (Evansville, Ind. / North HS), Kevin McCormick (Orland Park, Ill. / St. Lawrence HS), and Drew Howard (Ferdinand, Ind. / Ferdinand HS) all had three hits each for Evansville. While McCormick led the Aces in extra-base hits with a double and his first career home run.
“We clearly need to learn how to win,” said Head Coach Wes Carroll following the game. “Not playing complimentary baseball is all facets of the game.”
UE’s bats got started early on Tuesday loading the bases in the top of the first with two hits and a walk. But a ground out into a double play ended Evansville’s early threat. Lipscomb took the early lead in the bottom of the first scoring two unearned runs on a sacrifice fly and a throwing error from third to first base.
In the second inning, Ace's lead-off hitter Charlie Longmeier (Seymore, Ind. / Seymore HS) reached first on an error and soon found himself at third after back-to-back singles. UE’s next two at-bats resulted in two outs with the bases loaded. Senior right fielder Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo. / Northeast CC) took advantage of the situation with a single to third that scored Evansville’s first run of the game.
The Bison answered back in the bottom of the second with another run of their own to regain a two-run lead. Both teams’ bats were quieter over the next two innings as the Aces went down in order and Lipscomb added a hit in the fourth. UE’s offense returned in the fifth as the Bison put a new pitcher on the mound.
A lead-off walk for Rumsey and a long groundout put the speedy center fielder at second base. Senior second baseman Cal McGinnis (Kimberly, Wis. / Bradley) then placed a long single into center field between all three Lipscomb outfielders giving Rumsey enough time to cross home plate. McGinnis hit would be Evansville’s last of the inning, but the defense took down the Bison in order to keep it a one-run game going into the sixth inning.
The Aces put together their first multi-run inning in the top of the sixth as sophomore Aaron Nehls (Evansville, Ind. / North HS) pinch-hit for Longmeier. Nehls began with a lead-off single to left. He would come home on the next at-bat as McCormick smacked a home run over the right field wall for UE’s first lead of the afternoon. Howard followed up McCormick’s homer with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice hit. Taubert hit his second RBI single of the game shortly after as Howard made it a two-run game.
Lipscomb wasn’t able to respond as Evansville had another big offensive inning in the top of the eighth. The Aces scored three more runs in the eighth as two runners scored on errors, and one came in on a sacrifice fly from Taubert. UE added another insurance run in the top of the ninth as Nehls put together a single and a stolen base early. McCormick would then send him home again with his first double of the season.
Heading into the bottom of the ninth with a sixth-run lead, things began to fall apart for Evansville on defense. The Bison loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth through walks with only one out on the board and capitalized by scoring three runs on a single, a walk, and a sacrifice fly. Lipscomb pushed the game to extra innings with a three-run homer over the scoreboard in right field before the Aces got the third out of the inning.
Neither team found the tying or the winning run over the next three innings. Both teams put at least one runner at third from the 10th through the 12th but neither brought those runner's home. UE had a strong start to the top of the 13th as Rumsey took first after being hit by a pitch. He then stole his second base of the day to move into scoring position.
Evansville’s next at bat was a strikeout but was followed by a walk to McGinnis. With runners on shortstop Brodie Pert (Markham, Ontario, Canada) connected on his first hit of the season, a single to right center. The throw-in by the Bison was off, allowing Rumsey to score and break the tie. While the Aces two runners got into scoring position with one out on the miscalculated throw. But UE’s next two batters went down in order, heading into the bottom of the 13th leading by only one run.
Errors at short and on a passed ball to start the bottom of the 13th had Evansville facing a runner in scoring position early. Lipscomb’s next batter walked and both runners advanced as the Aces went for the out at first. With two runners in scoring position, UE intentionally walked the next Bison batter to set up a potential double play to end the game.
Lipscomb’s final batter hit a ground ball to third, putting Evansville in a position to get the double play. While the Aces got the second out at second base, an overthrow to first for the final out allowed the Bison to score both the tying run and the winning walk-off run. UE falls to 0-4 after the extra innings loss while Lipscomb improved to 2-1.
Evansville used six pitchers on Tuesday with sophomore right-hander Kellen Roberts (Monroe, Mich. / Monroe HS) getting the longest appearance at four innings with two hits, no runs, and five strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Jack Clevidence (Ankeny, Iowa / Ankeny HS) would be credited with the loss as he pitched all 3.2 extra innings in his first collegiate appearance. Clevidence ended his first outing with two hits, one earned run, two walks, and one putout.
The Aces are scheduled to play their first home game of 2025 this weekend. UE will open at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium on Friday night against Southern Indiana, weather permitting. First pitch on Friday against the Screaming Eagles is set for 6 p.m. |

Men's basketball hangs on for road win at Indiana State
|
|
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Gabriel Pozzato and Tayshawn Comer both reached the 20-point mark while Josh Hughes recorded a double-double to push the University of Evansville men’s basketball team to a 79-74 win over Indiana State on Wednesday evening at the Hulman Center.
With the win, the Purple Aces earned their 8th Missouri Valley Conference victory, the most for the program since the 2015-16 season. It also ended a 7-game skid for UE against the Sycamores.
“We showed great resilience and maturity tonight. Indiana State has a great program and this is a hard place to win at,” UE head coach David Ragland said following the win. “Our big guys built up confidence early and we were able to get big stops late to finish with the win.”
Pozzato led UE with 22 points while Comer finished with 21. Hughes and Connor Turnbull recorded 15 points apiece. Hughes added a career-high 10 boards on the way to his first double-double.
Picking up right where he left off on Sunday against Valparaiso, Turnbull scored the first two points of the game as the Purple Aces took a 4-0 lead. Josh Hughes added a triple that put UE up 7-3 just over two minutes in. Hughes’ second basket of the evening capped an 11-8 start for the Aces at the 13:43 mark.
Over the next two minutes, Indiana State made its run, scoring the next nine points to go up 17-11. UE regrouped to post the next seven tallies in just over a minute of action to retake an 18-17 edge. Turnbull had the first two baskets during the rally. Just past the halfway mark of the period, the Sycamores found themselves up 19-18.
Evansville took control over the final minutes. Gabriel Pozzato’s first 3-pointer of the game opened a 10-0 run that gave UE a 28-19 lead with 7:22 remaining in the half. Highlighting the stretch was Tayshawn Comer’s pass to Pozzato for an alley oop. ISU cut the deficit to just five at 30-25 inside of the 6-minute mark before the Aces countered once again. Outscoring ISU by a 10-2 margin, UE took its largest lead at 40-27 inside the final four minutes.
Another basket by Hughes matched the 13-point lead in the final minute until a triple in the final seconds cut the ISU deficit to 46-36 at halftime. The Sycamores shot 50% in the half while UE finished at 48.6%. Evansville did its damage in second-chance point, outscoring ISU by a 16-2 margin in the opening stanza.
After ISU knocked down a triple to get within nine, back-to-back field goals by the Aces made it a 13-point game inside of 18 minutes left. The Sycamores chipped away at the deficit, cutting it to 57-51 with 14:18 left in the contest while the Aces countered with four quick points, including a hook shot by Tanner Cuff, to retake the 10-point edge.
With 10:43 left in the game, Indiana State cut the deficit to seven once again and forced an inbound pass by the Aces with two seconds left on the shot clock. Turnbull hit a 3-pointer that put his squad back up by double figures. The lead for UE hovered between 7 and 12 points as UE held a 72-60 lead with 6:17 remaining.
A furious rally by the Sycamores saw them score 11 in a row and 14 of the next 16 to tie the game at 74-74 with just over a minute left. Comer got UE back on track with a layup while a Pozzato dunk in the final seconds put the finishing touches on the 79-74 victory.
Leading the way for ISU was Jaden Daughtry who scored a game-high 23 points. Shooting 52% in the second half, UE finished the game at 49.2% with ISU shooting 43.1%. The Aces also had a 36-31 edge on the glass. UE remains on the road for a 2 p.m. game at UIC on Saturday in Chicago. |
