Turnbull resets career scoring mark against Bradley
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Connor Turnbull set career marks in points (21) and rebounds (13) but it was not enough as Bradley held off a furious rally to defeat the University of Evansville men’s basketball team by a final score of 80-74 on Saturday evening at the Ford Center.
Turnbull picked up the first double-double of his collegiate career. He was 7-for-12 from the field while adding three blocks and two assists. Tayshawn Comer led the Purple Aces with 23 points while Josh Hughes scored 12 and Tanner Cuff finished with ten.
Bradley opened the game on a 7-1 run and led for the duration of the game. After starting the game 0-for-5 from the floor, Josh Hughes knocked down UE’s first shot to make it a 7-3 game. In the next possession, Connor Turnbull found Gabriel Pozzato for an alley oop that cut the deficit to two just over four minutes into the game.
Over the next seven minutes, the Braves defense held UE to just two points while pushing the lead to 18-7. Evansville hit just one of its 13 attempts over that span while turning it over three times. Turnbull’s first basket of the night got UE back on the board while Hughes followed with a 3-pointer to make it an 18-13 game with 7:28 left in the half.
Despite the stretch by the Aces, Bradley fended off the challenge to complete the half on a 25-12 run to take their largest lead of 18 points into halftime. A 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining in the period sent BU into the break with a 43-25 edge.
In the opening two minutes of the second half, Bradley took its largest lead of 21 points at 46-25. Tanner Cuff countered with a dunk before Tayshawn Comer registered five in a row to make it a 48-32 game. As the clock went under 15 minutes, the UE rally continued when Gui Tesch and Hughes knocked down consecutive triples to cut the BU advantage to just 10 at 51-41.
Midway through the final stanza, Bradley retook a 15-point edge, but UE continued to fight back. Two free throws by Cuff made it a 10-point game once again. Each time the Aces rallied, the Braves countered. Entering the final five minutes, Evansville finally cut the gap to single digits. Following a Comer basket, Turnbull recorded three in a row to chop the lead to five at 69-64.
With three minutes left BU ended the stretch with a bucket while Hughes quickly answered with his third long ball of the night to get within four. The turning point came with two minutes left when four in a row by the Braves put them up by eight (77-69) and they would hold strong from there, finishing the night with the 80-74 victory.
Four Bradley players finished in double figures with Duke Deen leading the way with 16 points. UE dominated the glass, finishing with a 45-28 rebounding edge but it was the Braves with the advantage offensively, out-shooting UE by a 47.2%-36.7% final.
Evansville takes to the road on Wednesday to face Missouri State in Springfield. |

Game 1 – Tennessee Tech 7, UE 4
A 2-run seventh inning saw the Purple Aces tie the Golden Eagles, but Tennessee Tech rallied with three runs in the 8th to open the day with a 7-4 win. After TTU plated a run in the top of the first, Evansville took its first lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Callie Meinel hit a 2-run triple to put UE in front.
It did not take long for Tennessee Tech to counter as they scored the tying run in the top of the second. Single runs in the fourth and seventh saw TTU hold a 4-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the 7th.
Keghan Pye reached on a 1-out walk while Miriah Powell followed with a single. Two batters later, Taylor Howe singled to left to plate pinch runner Kynadee Warner. Meinel came through in the clutch once again as her bases loaded walk tied the game to force extra innings.
Tennessee Tech wasted little time getting back on track, scoring three times in the 8th. Looking to rally once again, UE put two runners on base in the bottom of the frame, but TTU held on for the win. Pye recorded two of the Aces seven hits in the game while Meinel led the way with three RBI and two walks.
Kate Ridgway made the start, tossing seven innings with seven runs scoring, just three of which were earned. Gracie Hollingsworth recorded the final three outs.
Game 2 – UE 7, Furman 4
Coming through in the late innings once again, the Purple Aces held on for a 7-4 win over Furman to wrap up the weekend.
UE got on the board in the top of the first when two runs scored on a single from Meinel. The Paladins responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. Quiet third quarter drops UE women's basketball at Missouri State
|
|
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Evansville women’s basketball team dropped its final conference game in Great Southern Bank Arena 86-57 to the Missouri State Lady Bears.
In the Purple Aces final Missouri Valley Conference trip to Springfield, the team didn’t find enough offense to win one last time in the Show Me State. UE’s offense only had one 20+ point quarter, but the defense was able to keep up in the rebound game with 35 boards. Freshman guard Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind. / Hamilton Heights HS) led Evansville with 21 points thanks to a perfect 13 of 13 performance at the free throw line.
It was a back-and-forth battle early in Springfield as the lead was traded three times in the first five minutes. The Aces led for just over two minutes before Missouri State tied the game up. UE got the game to eight all halfway through the first. But the Lady Bears pulled away on a 12-point run over the next two and a half minutes. Runner made her first free throws of the game in the final minute and a half of the first for a 22-10 game.
The second quarter began similar to the first with the teams trading shots. Evansville’s offense was able to find its groove with a six-point run to get back within double digits of Missouri State. But a matching run from the Lady Bears pushed the deficit up to 13. The Aces responded with five points and shutting down Missouri State’s offense for over three minutes. But a technical foul from the UE sidelines gave the Lady Bears another opportunity to again make it a 13-point game heading into halftime.
Evansville found some early success in the third quarter with four points in under a minute. Yet the Aces offense struggled for much of the rest of the third. UE went scoreless from the floor for over five minutes as Missouri State took a 24-point lead. Senior guard Júlia Palomo (La Seu d’Urgell, Spain) broke the drought with a floater with 2:54 on the clock. Palomo had Evansville’s last bucket of the third, taking a quick cut through the paint to the basket. The Aces headed into the final 10 minutes at Great Southern Bank Arena trailing 61-36.
UE had its best quarter on offense in the fourth, scoring 21 points over the final 10 minutes. Freshman guard Kaiden Kreinhagen (Indianapolis / North Central HS) kicked off the scoring early with her second three of the game. Three straight trips to the line for Evansville almost brought the game back under 20 points. The Lady Bears answered with an 8-2 run pushing the lead to almost 30. Runner headed back to the line for two more points but a depleted Aces bench found themselves in foul trouble shortly after. With UE’s rotation down to only six players the team struggled to get stops on Missouri State down the stretch. A long layup for Runner ended the game as Evansville fell to the Lady Bears 86-57.
Runner and Palomo were the Aces only double-figure scorers on the night at 21 and 10 points. Sophomore Maggie Hartwig (Sauk City, Wis. / Sauk Prairie HS) led UE in rebounds with nine despite missing the final seven minutes of the game. Hartwig was closely followed behind by freshman Elle Snyder (Latrobe, Penn. / Greater Latrobe HS) with six boards.
Evansville returns to action next week at home against Bradley. The Aces will take on the Braves on Thursday, February 13 at 6 p.m. from Meeks Family Fieldhouse. |

Hartwig sets a new career scoring high at Southern Illinois
|
|
CARBONDALE, Ill. – A 28-point fourth quarter almost earned the University of Evansville women’s basketball team a comeback against Southern Illinois.
The Purple Aces ended up three points shy of their first road win in a 72-69 loss at Southern Illinois. UE had two strong offensive quarters at the Banterra Center, but Evansville’s defense struggled to contain the Salukis from having two 20+ point quarters. Sophomore forward Maggie Hartwig (Sauk City, Wis. / Sauk Prairie HS) had the best scoring game of her career in Carbondale with 29 points while also having her sixth double-double with 10 rebounds.
Hartwig made the first bucket of the game on Friday, but SIU jumped out to a 10-point lead in the quarter. The Aces had an almost seven-minute scoreless streak that ended at the free throw line. UE was able to put together a 10-point run in the final three minutes of the quarter to tie the game up at 12 points apiece.
Evansville and the Salukis went bucket for bucket early in the second quarter, trading the lead five times. But it was Southern Illinois who put together multiple runs with a nine-point lead midway through the second. The Aces cut into SIU’s runs three times in the final four minutes of the first half but headed into the locker room down 33-24.
UE’s offense got the game back into single digits early in the second half. The Salukis returned to their double-figure lead midway through the third as Evansville struggled to put together a run. The Aces had only their second run of the quarter with four straight points out of the media timeout. But Southern Illinois closed out the third on a 9-1 run as UE trailed by 16 going into the final 10 minutes.
The fourth quarter began with the team’s trading shots for the first two minutes. Evansville put together three short runs to get its offense going again. The Aces then broke out on their best run of the game with 12 straight points, making it a one-point game with 1:37 left on the clock. UE got the ball back after forcing a Saluki turnover. But Evansville turned the ball over as SIU scored four points in the final 48 seconds for the 72-69 final.
Three Aces ended the night in double figures with Hartwig leading the way on her career-high night. Freshman Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind. / Hamilton Heights HS) had a 17-point night while senior guard Júlia Palomo (La Seu d’Urgell, Spain) scored 10 points. Friday was Palomo’s first double-figure game since Belmont and only her second of MVC play. Hartwig was the only UE player with 10+ rebounds against the Salukis, but Runner was just one shy with nine boards.
Evansville continues on the road over the weekend to Springfield, Mo. It will be the Aces' last Valley game at Missouri State on Sunday, February 9. Tip-off from Great Southern Bank Arena is set for 2 p.m. |

Men's basketball falls short against Salukis
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Trailing by 20 points in the second half, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team stormed back to get within four points before Southern Illinois rebounded to take a 68-59 win on Wednesday night at the Ford Center.
Leading the way for UE was Tayshawn Comer who posted a game-high 25 points. He was 7-of-19 from the field and knocked down 7 of his 10 free throw tries. Gabriel Pozzato completed the game with 13 points.
“I want to give SIU and their staff a ton of credit – they were ready to play tonight and had a great amount of energy,” UE head coach David Ragland said. “They usually do not shoot as well from three but tonight, we left them open and they hit them.”
Comer was on fire to start the game, knocking down a pair of early triples to give the Purple Aces a 6-3 lead. Southern Illinois’ second triple of the game tied the score at 6-6, however, Connor Turnbull hit a long jumper to put UE back in front.
Over the next two minutes, the Salukis took control with a 9-0 as they converted three more from downtown. Comer’s eighth point of the contest put a temporary halt to the stretch as SIU added to the lead for the duration of the half. With 6:43 remaining, the lead reached 13 as another 3-pointer gave the Salukis a 27-14 advantage.
Tanner Cuff found Turnbull on an alley oop to get within 10, but Southern continued to have an answer. Knocking down 10 triples in the opening stanza, SIU led by as many as 17 in the half before taking a 38-23 lead into the halftime break. The Saluki defense held UE to just 28.1% shooting in the first 20 minutes.
Southern Illinois knocked down another early triple to push the lead to 20 points for the first time. With SIU up 49-29 at the 13:08 mark, UE worked its way back into the game. Holding the Salukis to 0-for-5 with three turnovers over the ensuing five minutes, the Aces outscored SIU by a 17-1 margin to get within four.
Pozzato opened the stretch with a triple and, following a Saluki free throw, Comer connected on another triple to cut the deficit to 15. A deadball technical on Southern Illinois saw Comer convert both free throws while a Josh Hughes layup finished off a 4-point possession as UE made it a 50-41 game. Hughes added another basket while Gui Tesch picked up a triple to make it a 4-point game.
SIU overcame the rally as they scored the next six tallies to extend the lead back to 10 at 56-46 inside of six minutes remaining. Despite the deficit, UE cut it in half to get within five, but SIU fended off the challenge to take the win.
Jarrett Hensley and Ali Dibba paced the Salukis with 18 points apiece. SIU shot 37.5% while holding the Aces to 34.4%. They also outrebounded UE by a slight 42-39 margin.
Evansville welcomes Bradley on Saturday evening for a nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network. Tip is set for 7 p.m. |
