New book published by Harlaxton College faculty member, Dr Oliver Haslam - Minimalism and Affect in American Literature, 1970-2020
|
|
Dr Oliver Haslam, Assistant Professor in English Literature at Harlaxton College, has just published his first monograph, Minimalism and Affect in American Literature, 1970-2020 (Bloomsbury Academic, 2024).
In Minimalism and Affect in American Literature, 1970-2020, he argues that writers of American literary minimalism are uniquely privileged in their ability to formalize precarity and threatening cultural currents into the fragile construct that is ordinary life. Through readings of Joan Didion, Raymond Carver, Paul Auster, and Don DeLillo, and cultural phenomena ranging from sedation to telephony, he considers the persistence and political importance of minimalism within American literature from the 20th century into the 21st.
‘In Minimalism and Affect in American Literature, 1970-2020, Haslam gives us a highly readable account of the precariousness of our contemporary moment, with all its affective extremes. This will be an indispensable text for understanding the ongoing relevance of literary minimalism.’ – Marc Botha, Associate Professor of English, Durham University, UK. |

|
Harlaxton College has officially taken on tenancy at the historic Gregory Arms Pub. This exciting venture further integrates Harlaxton within the local community and creates new opportunities for engagement, education, and cultural exchange.
Located near Harlaxton Manor, the 19th-century Gregory Arms Pub has long been a beloved gathering spot for students, faculty, locals, and visitors alike. Now managed by Harlaxton Manor Enterprises, "The Greg" will offer five guest rooms along with its pub services, with all proceeds supporting student experiences at Harlaxton College.
Plans include utilizing the pub as a resource for internships, summer programs, and classes, offering students the chance to explore the cultural and historical significance of British pubs. Additionally, efforts are underway to preserve its welcoming atmosphere while introducing student-led events, educational workshops, and collaborative projects with various partners. By acquiring this iconic establishment, Harlaxton aims to honor its history while creating a dynamic space for academic, social, and community activities.
"The Gregory Arms Pub embodies the spirit of Harlaxton's unique educational experiences," said Holly Carter, PhD, Dean and Executive Director of Harlaxton College. "It represents a blend of local tradition and student life. We're excited to preserve its character while creating new memories for generations to come."

|
|
LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Evansville senior Giulia Cardona earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region Honorable Mention accolades in an announcement by the organization on Tuesday.
Cardona was selected by the Midwest Region. She earned the accolade last season becoming the first Purple Aces volleyball player to be recognized. There are 14 All-Region team members and 6-8 honorable mention selections in each of the 10 regions. In total, 211 student-athletes earned All-Region honors with 108 different schools being represented.
One of the most decorated players in Missouri Valley Conference history became the first in UE history and just the second-ever MVC player to record 2,000 kills in her career. She wrapped up her career with a total of 2,183, just 111 shy of the all-time league mark.
Despite missing the final five matches of the season, the 2023 MVC Player of the Year completed the 2024 season as the national leader in total kills (549), total points (611.5), total attacks (1,548), kills per set (5.60), points per set (6.24), and attacks per set (1,580).
Another highlight of the 2024 campaign came on Nov. 5 when Cardona was named the AVCA Division I National Player of the Week. It marked the second such honor for Cardona and came in a week that saw her record 6.50 kills per set in wins over Illinois State and Bradley while hitting .357.
Earlier in the 2024 season, Cardona set the all-time UE program kills record. The moment came on Sept. 28 when she surpassed the Aces record of 1,911, which was set by Alondra Vazquez. |

Runner picks up her third MVC Freshman of the Week honor
|
|
ST LOUIS – Freshman guard Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind. / Hamilton Heights HS) earned her third weekly honor in only five weeks of play.
Runner continues her impressive freshman season after being named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week by conference office staff. The guard was one of three Purple Aces players to put up over 20 points in UE’s 87-74 win over the SIUE Cougars. Runner recorded a stat in every category on the box score for Evansville while leading the Aces on both sides of the ball.
In 36 minutes of action against SIUE, Runner scored 21 points while leading UE under the glass with seven rebounds. Of her 21 points on Sunday, Runner made 16 free throws to raise her season total to 77 at the charity stripe. With 77 made free throws the freshman is third in the nation and leads the conference in the category. Runner also had a three pointer and a field goal on offense for Evansville against the Cougars.
Along with being one of the Aces leading scorers, Runner led the team in rebounds and assists on Sunday. Runner had a stat in every category but turnovers against SIUE as she pulled down seven boards, helped on five baskets, forced a turnover, and blocked a shot. The freshman currently leads Evansville in points, assists, blocks, and minutes.
With her third Freshman of the Week honor, Runner ties the most weekly recognitions by an Aces newcomer in the past seven seasons. Program leading scorer Sara Dickey had five weekly recognitions in her freshman season of 2013-14. While the MVC’s highest weekly recognition for a freshman in a season was Belmont guard Jailyn Banks last year with six. |
