UE Student Government Association to hold Dedication for Legacy Courtyard
|
|
The Student Government Association (SGA) will unveil the Legacy Courtyard project during a dedication ceremony Thursday, November 14 at 4:15 p.m.
Located on the 300 block of South Frederick Street, the dedicated student recreation area includes a patio, hammock village, two sand volleyball courts, and an open green space slated for future phases of development.
The multi-year project began in Fall 2022 and has been spearheaded, designed, and fully funded by the SGA with demolition of five university-owned homes commencing in June 2024. In collaboration with various other student organizations, SGA ensured that all plants and trees in the green space are native to Indiana.
"SGA saw the need for more outdoor study and recreation areas on campus, and we were committed to meeting that need," said Benton Simpson, President of SGA. "The Legacy Courtyard reflects the vision and dedication of our students. Designed by students, for students, it stands as a lasting symbol of our contributions to campus." |

GWS Screening of film "Will & Harper" with Talkback Following: November 17, 7pm in Hyde 110
|
|
The Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies Program presents a film screening of "Will & Harper" and Talkback on Sunday, November 17 at 7pm in Hyde Hall 110.
About the film: Three years ago, Will Ferrell received a most surprising email: his dear friend of nearly 30 years was coming out to him as a trans woman. That friend was Harper Steele, a writer he met on his first day at Saturday Night Live back in 1995, sparking a friendship and creative partnership that grew over the next three decades. In this intimate, honest, and heartfelt documentary, Will and Harper hit the open road together to process this new stage of their friendship and reintroduce Harper to the country that she loves — this time, as herself.
Directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar), the new documentary film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and was acquired by Netflix.
Will & Harper is rated R by the MPAA for language.
This event is open to UE students, faculty, and staff. |

Snyder Concert and Lecture Series Presents: Sebastian Junger | Thursday, November 14
|
|
Mark your calendars for the upcoming Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series featuring Sebastian Junger!
Thursday, November 14
7:00 p.m.
Shanklin Theatre
Sebastian Junger is the internationally acclaimed, best-selling author of WAR, The Perfect Storm, A Death in Belmont, and Fire. He is also the acclaimed director of the documentary films Restrepo and Korengal. As a contributing editor to Vanity Fair and as a contributor to ABC News, he has covered major international news stories and has been awarded the National Magazine Award and a SAIS Novartis Prize for Journalism.
Junger’s latest book, In My Time Of Dying, is part medical drama, part searing autobiography, and part rational inquiry into the ultimate unknowable mystery. For years as an award-winning war reporter, Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020. Crippled by abdominal pain, Junger was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Once there, he began slipping away. As blackness encroached, he was visited by his dead father, inviting Junger to join him. That was the last thing Junger remembered until he came to the next day and was told he had suffered a ruptured aneurysm that he should not have survived. This experience spurred Junger — a confirmed atheist raised by his physicist father to respect the empirical — to undertake a scientific, philosophical, and deeply personal examination of mortality and what happens after we die.
Junger became a fixture in the international media when, as a first-time author, he commanded the New York Times best-seller list for more than three years with The Perfect Storm, which became a major motion picture starring George Clooney. |

Aces men's soccer stuns no. 23 Western Michigan in MVC Quarterfinals
|
|
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – It took almost two overtime periods, but the University of Evansville men’s soccer triumphed over the Western Michigan Broncos with a 2-1 victory in the MVC Tournament Quarterfinals.
The Purple Aces made the most of the moment in their first postseason match as they took down Western Michigan on their home field Sunday morning. UE scored twice in 108 minutes of action to hand the 23rd ranked Broncos their first loss at WMU Soccer Complex in 26 matches. Evansville was led by senior forward Kai Phillip (Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago) with one goal, five shots, and three chances on net. Freshman defender Martin Wurschmidt (Fram, Norway) had the golden game winning goal for the Aces in the 108th minute for his second score of the season.
“I’m just a proud coach,” said Head Coach Robbe Tarver after the win. “These guys have worked so hard to set a new standard for the program. To go down late in the second half at a place like WMU where they haven’t lost since 2022 and responding how we did shows the guts these guys have. We’re happy to have more time together this season.”
With a 10 a.m. central kickoff time it was a slow first half for both sides. UE registered the first shot of the match as senior midfielder Jose Vivas (Teruel, Spain) attempt went wide left in the sixth minute. But Western Michigan countered with back-to-back shots while also frustrating Evansville into two yellow cards. It would stay an even match through the first 45 as both teams had five shots with two on goal.
Things picked up in the second half of the match as again the two teams took the same number of shots with eight each. Four shots were taken in the first 10 minutes of the second as freshman goalkeeper Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill. / Elk Grove HS) made his third save of the match. It’d be another 10 minutes before another shot was registered by Phillip. But it was the Broncos who found the back of the net in the 74th minute.
WMU wouldn’t lead for long though as the Aces found the equalizer in the 79th minute. Phillip recorded another shot in the 77th minute that went wide before he scored his third goal of 2024 only two minutes later. Vivas brought the ball up into the 18 on the right side and crossed up to sophomore winger Auden Engen Vik (Trondheim, Norway) just outside the penalty area. Engen Vik took a cross through the box that found Phillip at the six where he headed the ball past the Broncos goalkeeper.
In the final 11 minutes of regulation both teams fought to find the winning goal. UE had the only two shots on goal in that time from graduate defender Tobias Bak (Taastrup, Denmark) and senior forward Nacho Diaz Barragan (Almeria, Spain). With neither team able to score the match moved into the first 10-minute overtime session.
It took almost three minutes for the first shot of overtime and almost four minutes for Evansville’s first. None other than Phillip had the OT look for the Aces in the 94th minute at the top of the penalty arc that was saved by Western Michigan. Spurred by his look at the end of the second half, Diaz Barragan controlled on offense for UE the rest of the first overtime. He had a close wide look in the 96th minute and a look that was barely saved by the Broncos in the 99th. Evansville headed into the second overtime period with plenty of momentum to try and extend its season another game.
The start of the second overtime period was all defense as the Aces mostly kept WMU out of the offensive zone. UE had a look in the 105th minute from Wurschmidt just inside the penalty area that sailed high. But it was only two minutes later that Evansville struck gold starting with a corner kick. In the 108th minute Vivas took the left corner launching the ball to the far-right side of the six. Wurschmidt was the first player to make contact, using his left foot to launch the ball into the left half of the net to win the match.
With the win the Aces advanced to the MVC Semifinals round hosted by the Missouri State Bears. UE will know its next opponent later on Sunday evening after the conclusion of the second quarterfinals match in Bowling Green. This is the third time in four seasons that Evansville has made it to at least the semifinal round of the MVC Tournament. |

UE women's basketball wins home opener over Wright State
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Evansville women’s basketball team won its first game at Meeks Family Fieldhouse in a 65-63 victory over the Wright State Raiders.
The Purple Aces led by as much as 12 points on Sunday afternoon in their narrow win over the Raiders. Sophomore forward Maggie Hartwig (Sauk City, Wis. / Sauk Praire HS) led the team on both sides of the ball with 24 points and 14 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Freshmen guards Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind. / Hamilton Heights HS) and Kylee Norkus (Naperville, Ill. / Neuqua Valley HS) also scored in double figures for the second straight game.
“I’m really really proud of our team,” said Head Coach Robyn Scherr after the game. “We showed such growth from our first game to this game, especially on the defensive end. We really did a good job of managing the game for three and a half quarters. And luckily we built a good enough lead going into that fourth quarter that we were able to hang on.
“I was just really proud of our kids for making those plays at the end. Grabbing big rebounds and making big plays when they could have hung their heads because we let them get back into the game. I’m just so pleased. This is a group of winners and we’re only going to get better from here.”
It was a back-and-forth battle for most of the first quarter in Meeks Family FIeldhouse. Neither team put together a run until six minutes in when Wright State had its largest lead of the game after scoring five straight points. But UE found its offensive rhythm in the final three minutes with the last 10 points of the first. Evansville held a narrow three-point lead heading into the second frame.
The Raiders had the first bucket of the second quarter but back-to-back made baskets for the Aces put themselves two scores in front. UE matched every shot Wright State took and then some through the quarter. Evansville grew its lead to eight points twice including with a minute left in the first half. Runner had the last point of the half as the Aces went into the break up 36-29.
The second half began slowly for both teams as it took over two minutes for either side to score. The Raiders opened up the scoring for the third quarter in a row, but a four-point and three-point run for UE kept them ahead through the first five minutes. The final five minutes of the third was mostly a back-and-forth pace. In the last minute and a half of the quarter a second chance layup for Norkus and a three for Hartwig had Evansville up by 11.
Hartwig scored another trey for the Aces early in the fourth quarter to keep the double-digit lead intact. After a free throw by Runner with just over eight minutes on the clock UE had its largest lead of the game at 12 points. Wright State began to chip into the lead with a five-point run. But a third three for Hartwig once again made it a double-digit game.
Over the next minute it was again traded shots between Evansville and the Raiders. But Wright State put together a nine-point run in the final four minutes to get within one of the Aces. With over a minute on the clock and two players fouled out, UE was able to get three defensive rebounds and make another free throw for the 65-63 win.
Evansville led in most statistical categories on Sunday including shooting percentage, rebounds, assists, and points in the paint. The Aces were 21-58 from the floor for 36.2% while going 20 of 26 from the line. It was also the second straight game for UE with over 40 rebounds as Evansville grabbed 49 boards.
The Aces continue their two game homestand later this week. SEMO will visit the River City for a midweek matchup on Thursday evening. Tip-off on Thursday, November 14th is set for 6 p.m. |

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Josdarilee Caraballo recorded a career-high 12 kills while Angelica Gonzalez had her second-consecutive 20-kill performance on Friday with the University of Evansville volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Murray State inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
Caraballo’s 12 kills passed her previous mark of four, which came last week at Bradley. Gonzalez was just one shy of her career mark of 21 kills, which was set against Belmont on Thursday evening. Ainoah Cruz picked up 22 digs while Kora Ruff had 13 digs and 54 assists. Leading the way for the Racers was Ella Vogel with 13 kills.
Set 1 – UE 25, MSU 21
Evansville jumped out to a 3-1 lead and after Murray State tied it at 3-3, the Aces scored five in a row as AInoah Cruz opened the stretch with an ace. Chloe Cline’s first kill of the match solidified a 10-4 edge. The Racers cut the deficit to three at 10-7 when Cline’s second kill helped UE go back up by five.
Things got close in the middle portion of the set as the Racers closed to within two at 17-15 before a kill from Madisyn Steele and another ace by Cruz extended the lead back to 22-17. MSU made another rally, cutting the deficit to a pair (23-21), but following a time out, Angelica Gonzalez recorded back-to-back kills to clinch the set.
Set 2 – MSU 25, UE 18
A pair of aces by Blakeley Freeman set the Aces up with a 4-1 lead while Carlotta Pascual registered four early kills to establish a 6-3 advantage. The Racers slowly fought back, tying the set at 11-11 before taking their first lead at 14-13. MSU went up by a pair before another kill from Pascual knotted the score at 18-18. Following a time out, Murray State went on a roll, scoring seven in a row to complete the set and tie the match.
Set 3 – MSU 25, UE 16
Murray State scored the first two points while the Aces battled back to tie it up at 6-6 on a kill by Gonzalez. MSU retook the lead, extending it to four points at 13-9 and eventually a 19-10 score. They would take the set by a 25-16 final while opening up a 2-1 match lead.
Set 4 – MSU 25, UE 22
Josdarilee Caraballo notched a kill and Cruz followed with an ace that put UE in front by score of 6-4. The Aces continued to hold the advantage until the Racers battled back to take a 14-13 edge. Gonzalez posted a kill that tied the score at 18-18, however, the Racers wrestled away a 20-18 edge before going up 24-20.
Down to their final point, UE rallied with a pair of Caraballo kills to force the Racers to use their final time out. Out of the break, MSU converted the winning kill. Next weekend, UE travels to Valparaiso and UIC. |

- Taking on one of the top mid-major programs over the last handful of seasons, the Purple Aces dropped the season opener to North Texas by a final of 80-63
- Trailing by as many as 29 points, UE stormed back to get within 12 points in the second half, however, the deficit was too much to overcome
- Gabriel Pozzato led all players with 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting while Tanner Cuff finished the evening with 11 points
- Cuff added 5 boards and 4 assists
Best Debut?
- In his first official game for the Purple Aces, Gabriel Pozzato turned heads with a 28-point outing at North Texas

- Prior to his effort, the top program debut in the DI era came from Marty Simmons; on 12/1/86, Simmons scored 27 points against Montana State
- Interesting enough - Scott Haffner made his debut that night and finished with 26; DeAndre Williams made his debut in 2019 and scored 26 versus Ball State
- Pozzato converted 10 of his 16 shot attempts while adding three triples, three boards and a block
- In the exhibition game against Tiffin, Pozzato recorded 22 points

- Cuff hit 4 of his 6 attempts while adding 5 boards and 4 assists
- He saw action in all 35 games last season and made two starts, but his role is set to grow even more heading into the upcoming campaign
- In his first season with the Purple Aces, Cuff averaged 7.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game
Returning Experience
- Cam Haffner will be depended on for his experience following his first two collegiate seasons
- In his first season at UE in 2023-24, Haffner finished with 4.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per game while making 16 starts and seeing time in all 35 contests
- Haffner averaged 7.6 PPG in the final five games of the regular season while scoring 11 points on two occasions
- The season opener at UNT saw him play a career-high 34:19 while scoring 6 points
Scouting the Opposition
