Snyder Concert and Lecture Series Presents: Sebastian Junger | Thursday, November 14
|
|
Mark your calendars for the upcoming Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series featuring Sebastian Junger!
Thursday, November 14
7:00 p.m.
Shanklin Theatre
Sebastian Junger is the internationally acclaimed, best-selling author of WAR, The Perfect Storm, A Death in Belmont, and Fire. He is also the acclaimed director of the documentary films Restrepo and Korengal. As a contributing editor to Vanity Fair and as a contributor to ABC News, he has covered major international news stories and has been awarded the National Magazine Award and a SAIS Novartis Prize for Journalism.
Junger’s latest book, In My Time Of Dying, is part medical drama, part searing autobiography, and part rational inquiry into the ultimate unknowable mystery. For years as an award-winning war reporter, Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020. Crippled by abdominal pain, Junger was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Once there, he began slipping away. As blackness encroached, he was visited by his dead father, inviting Junger to join him. That was the last thing Junger remembered until he came to the next day and was told he had suffered a ruptured aneurysm that he should not have survived. This experience spurred Junger — a confirmed atheist raised by his physicist father to respect the empirical — to undertake a scientific, philosophical, and deeply personal examination of mortality and what happens after we die.
Junger became a fixture in the international media when, as a first-time author, he commanded the New York Times best-seller list for more than three years with The Perfect Storm, which became a major motion picture starring George Clooney. |

To close out this semester's last Lunch and Learn discussing the community dimension of the leadership framework, we have the great honor of hosting Erika N. Taylor, J.D., the CEO of the YWCA of Evansville.
Erika Taylor hails from the south side of Chicago where she developed a passion for social justice. She earned a bachelor’s degree in French at Indiana University and went on to earn a law degree from Indiana University McKinney School of Law. After working as an attorney in Chicago city government for 2 years, Erika moved to Evansville where she practiced in the area of commercial litigation. When the opportunity to work as in-house counsel for a local company presented itself, Erika left the daily practice of law to work in the areas of human resources and employment law. From there she served in various executive leadership positions before landing at YWCA Evansville where she now serves as Chief Executive Officer.
Erika has a lifetime of community leadership experience having served on numerous boards and volunteering for countless community groups, committees, and charitable fundraisers. Erika’s passion is helping underserved women and children and advocating for equal rights for all citizens. She is currently a member of the City of Evansville’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council. The YWCA mission of eliminating racism and empowering women is right up her alley and allows her to combine her executive leadership skills with her passion to serve the community.

Swimming and diving on campus to face USI on Friday
|
|
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – For the first time this season, the University of Evansville swimming and diving squads will be competing on campus. On Friday, the Purple Aces welcome USI to Wyttenbach Pool for a 4 p.m. meet.
Last weekend, UE took on McKendree at Deaconess Aquatic Center. One of the top teams in the nation at the Division II level, McKendree picked up the final team wins, but Evansville had multiple individual performances that provide momentum heading into the contest against the Screaming Eagles.
Daniel Santos Lopez had the fast time in the 50-free. In a finish that came down to the wire, his 21.27 edged the #2 finisher by 0.04 to pick up the victory. Patrik Vilbergsson brought home the win in the 200-back. With a 1:52.17, he earned the top finish by just over a second.
Carlos Souto was the runner-up in the 100-breaststroke. With a 57.50, he completed the race less than a second off the winning pace. Souto picked up another 2nd place finish in the 200, finishing in 2:12.12. Joao Pereira finished just behind him to take third.
Evelyn Chin grabbed a win in the 100-fly, finishing with a time of 57.72. She edged the competition by 0.21. In the 200-IM, it was Sveva Brugnoli recording a win for the Aces. Her 2:10.85 was close to two seconds ahead of the runner-up.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Mari Mueller and Rafaela Makariewicz took second and third. Mueller was less than a half second behind the winning time. Hannah Krings picked up a pair of second-place efforts. In the 1000-free, she swam an 11:10.69 while her time in the 500-free was a 5:27.37. UE men's soccer set for Top 25 showdown at No. 17 Missouri State
|
|
The Purple Aces secured their spot in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament with a 1-0 win over Bowling Green on Friday night. It was UE's first win over the Falcons as MVC opponents and their first since 2006 after Bowling Green had won the past two matches. Evansville's lone goal on Friday came from graduate forward Sami Owusu (Denver / Dayton) in the 60th minute on a defensive mistake from the Falcons.
Missouri State comes into Friday's matchup as one of the Top 25 teams in the nation. The Bears were ranked 17th in the country by the United Soccer Coaches on Tuesday afternoon following a 0-0 tie with Saint Louis last week. While Missouri State had a bye week from MVC action over the course of two months the Bears haven't lost a Valley game yet. Missouri State has five wins in conference play with the team's one tie coming against no. 11 Western Michigan. The Bears are led by senior forward Jesus Barea who leads the MVC in goals with 13 through 14 matches. With 13 goals, Barea is third in the nation for goals in the 2024 season while comfortably leading the Valley by three goals.
The Aces relied on a six-save performance by goalkeeper Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill. / Elk Grove HS) to shut out Bowling Green on Friday. With the win against the Falcons UE extends its unbeaten streak to five matches. The win signified Mroz's eighth of the year, marking the most by a keeper since 2022 and the most by a freshman keeper since 2016.
Mroz is also back in the national ranks as he's tied for 22nd in the country with 61 saves in 15 matches. Mroz is also one of three goalkeepers in the Valley with more than 50 saves, leading the conference with 61. |

Aces women's basketball picks up exhibition win over Franklin
|
|
EVANSVILLE, IN – Powered by a 26-point, 14-rebound performance from sophomore Maggie Hartwig (Sauk City, Wis. / Sauk Prairie HS), the University of Evansville women’s basketball team opened its 2024-25 campaign with an 86-60 exhibition victory over Franklin College in front of a sellout crowd at Meeks Family Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
Hartwig, a sophomore forward who averaged 11.5 points and 7.5 boards during her freshman season for the Aces, knocked down 10-of-18 shots from the field while seeing 3-of-5 shots drop from beyond the arc in just over 30 minutes of action.
“It was fun to get out and play a game,” said Head Coach Robyn Scherr following the win. “It’s been practicing all fall so it’s nice to get out and kind of see what we can do in this environment with fans in the stands. It was a great crowd.
“I was pleased. We had a really good first half. I would have liked for some things in the second half to be cleaner. But I thought we did a really good job in the first half in scoring 50 points. We had a really big second quarter so that part was fun.”
After a slow opening quarter that saw the teams swap the lead five times, the Aces began to push the pace on their way to a 30-point second quarter that gave them a 50-33 advantage at halftime. The Aces used a strong showing in the front court as they outrebounded the Grizzles 43-31 while outscoring the visitors 46-26 from close range.
Overall, Evansville saw eight players score in the contest for over 50% shooting on the night.
Along with Hartwig’s double-double night, freshman guard Camryn Runner added an efficient 15 points while dishing seven assists. Senior Julia Palomo and freshman Avery Kelly scored in double figures as well with 11 apiece.
Kelly, an Evansville native who prepped at Memorial High School, added to her double figure scoring night with five assists and seven rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.
Franklin, winners of 17 games in 2023-24, was led by Jordan Coon with 15 points.
Evansville opens its regular season on the road on Tuesday against IU-Indianapolis. The game is slated to tipoff at 5:30p.m. CT and can be streamed on ESPN+. |
