- Applying these principles to real-world leadership opportunities and challenges

To close out this semester's last Lunch and Learn discussing the community dimension of the leadership framework, we have the great honor of hosting Erika N. Taylor, J.D., the CEO of the YWCA of Evansville.

Erika Taylor hails from the south side of Chicago where she developed a passion for social justice. She earned a bachelor’s degree in French at Indiana University and went on to earn a law degree from Indiana University McKinney School of Law. After working as an attorney in Chicago city government for 2 years, Erika moved to Evansville where she practiced in the area of commercial litigation. When the opportunity to work as in-house counsel for a local company presented itself, Erika left the daily practice of law to work in the areas of human resources and employment law. From there she served in various executive leadership positions before landing at YWCA Evansville where she now serves as Chief Executive Officer.

Erika has a lifetime of community leadership experience having served on numerous boards and volunteering for countless community groups, committees, and charitable fundraisers. Erika’s passion is helping underserved women and children and advocating for equal rights for all citizens. She is currently a member of the City of Evansville’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council. The YWCA mission of eliminating racism and empowering women is right up her alley and allows her to combine her executive leadership skills with her passion to serve the community.

The University of Evansville (UE) School of Education is pleased to announce its second annual Exploring Teaching Day, scheduled for Friday, October 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

This event is designed to inspire and guide area high school students who are considering a future career in teaching. Students will have the unique opportunity to hear from Indiana's 2024 Teacher of the Year, Eric Jenkins, who teaches at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana. Jenkins will share his experiences and insights on the teaching profession.

The event will also feature a roundtable panel of local educators, moderated by Dr. Abbie Redmond, Superintendent of the Warrick County School Corporation. Panelists will discuss their journey as educators, challenges, and the rewards of the teaching profession.

In addition to these insightful discussions, participating high schoolers will tour UE's campus and engage in an interactive activity designed to showcase what makes the University of Evansville a special place to learn and grow.

On behalf of Ace CARE, we would like to invite you to the 9th annual Ace Race Skele-fun Run 5K!

Ace CARE is hosting our largest fundraiser, the Ace Race 5K, on October 26, 2024. We are asking for support from students and faculty so that we may continue to provide care to our most vulnerable neighbors. We welcome you to join us for the race to support our organization.

The mission of Ace CARE is to connect the unmet health care needs of the Tri-State community with the educational experience of our Doctor of Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, and Athletic Training students. We do this by providing free physical therapy care and group exercise programs to the uninsured, underinsured, homeless, and vulnerable members of our community to improve the quality of life in our surrounding area.

Last year, our students volunteered over 3,500 hours of their time, and we were able to treat over 127 participants. Ace CARE operates solely on community philanthropy, and we work tirelessly to keep our doors open to those we serve.

CHNG-310: Celebrating Hispanic Voices will be offered in the Spring 2025. In this ChangeLab students explore Hispanic student identities, experiences, and perspectives by researching and recording podcast episodes Spanish, English, and Spanglish. Hispanic students share their stories, discuss relevant issues, and celebrate their cultural heritage. Through this podcast students and interviewed guests work to foster a sense of community, empowerment, and inclusivity at UE and beyond. Students are not required to speak Spanish to take this ChangeLab.

Calling all commuter students! The dual student lounge is now open and recieving registrations! The common spaces in Hale Hall are now being opened to commuter students to allow for a more relaxed place to study, get some down time between classes, or have lunch! The spaces that are available include the game room, the kitchen and attached lounge area, and the computer lab. Registration is located on the second floor of Ridgway in the office of residence life. Access is granted 24-48 working hours after registration is complete.

The space operates on the same hours as Ridgway and swipe access is added to your student ID following registration!

We are inviting you to participate in a research study. Your participation in this online survey is completely voluntary. This consent form will give you information about the study to help you decide whether this is of interest to you. This study aims to understand how emissions from super polluters, in leading to poor air quality, affect the health outcomes and overall quality of life for the community at the University of Evansville, the research and creation of a survey will assess the extent of these health risks in this population. We are asking you to participate because you have been living in the Evansville area. Although the results of this study may be published, no information that could identify you will be included. This study will pose limited risk for you, such as psychological harm to those who feel pollution has affected their mental health. The information that will be collected will stay between our study group, and faculty advisor.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Freshman Louise Standtke was the low scorer for the University of Evansville women’s golf team in Tuesday’s final round of the Braun Intercollegiate.

Standtke finished the second 18 holes at Oak Meadow Country Club with a 4-over 76 to finish the tournament in a tie for second place with a 151.  Indiana State’s Yang Tai was the tournament medalist with a 2-round score of 147.  Standtke wrapped up Monday’s opening round with a 75.

Coming home in a tie for 9th place was Kate Petrova and Mallory Russell.  Both completed the weekend with scores of 154.  Russell carded an 80 on Tuesday while Petrova finished with an 82.  Trinity Dubbs and Izzy Steele completed the Purple Aces’ “A” team.  Dubbs’ 83 in the second round tied her for 56th with a 169 while Steele checked in with a final score of 177.

Pacing the UE “B” team was Elizabeth Mercer.  Following an 80 to open the event, she recorded an 82 in the final round to tie for 36th with a 162.  Jane Grankina was one behind Mercer with a 163.  She tied for 40th.  Adeline Wittmer and Mia Cruz rounded out the second squad with final totals of 185 and 189.

UE took 4th place in the final team standings with a 626.  Indiana State pulled away from the field to win with a score of 611, defeating runner-up Belmont by ten strokes.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Following a historic postseason run in 2024 University of Evansville Director of Athletics Ziggy Siegfried has announced a five-year extension for baseball head coach Wes Carroll.

Coach Carroll has brought unprecedented national exposure and acclaim to our University, Community, and all Purple Aces,” says Siegfried. “He is an outstanding leader, an individual who can recruit at the highest level, and he understands how to create the best possible environment for our student-athletes to thrive. He is and will always be a Purple Ace, and I am so proud to have him as the leader of our baseball program for years to come.”

Under the direction of Coach Carroll, the Purple Aces made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 18 years and won the program’s first-ever NCAA Regional in the 2024 season. In 2024 Carroll guided UE to a 39-26 overall record.  The Purple Aces swept all four games in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament to claim the MVC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.  UE then won the program's first-ever NCAA Regional Tournament title by winning the Greenville (N.C.) Regional to advance to the program's first-ever NCAA Super Regional.

In the Knoxville Super Regional, Evansville pushed the No. 1 national seed, Tennessee, to the brink of elimination, as the Purple Aces forced the 'if necessary' game three with a 10-8 victory over the Volunteers.  It was one of only two losses that Tennessee suffered in the NCAA Tournament on its way to the 2024 national championship.

Over the course of 16 seasons with Evansville, Caroll has a 428-434 record, was named the 2024 ABCA/ATEC Midwest Regional Coach of the Year, a two-time MVC Dan Callahan Coach of the Year, coached two All-Americans, one MVC Player of the Year, two MVC Pitchers of the Year, two MVC Freshman of the Year, and one MVC Defensive Player of the Year, six All-Region players, two CSC All-District players, and 19 All-MVC First Team selections.

Carroll coached the Aces for 16 years and was a standout shortstop for UE from 1998 to 2001. Carroll grew up minutes from the UE campus in nearby Newburgh, Indiana. He watched his older brother and Major League alum, Jamey Carroll, excel at shortstop for UE. He later got to experience the success the program is capable of first-hand as a four-year starter for the Purple Aces and a member of UE’s 2000 NCAA Tournament team.

Wes Carroll became UE’s first Freshman All-America selection in 1998, thanks to a rookie campaign in which he hit .355 with 18 doubles, two home runs, and 39 runs batted in. Carroll went on to hit .299 or better in each of his four years at UE, and finished his career by setting the school’s all-time career record for doubles (74), while also ranking in the school’s career top 10 in six different categories. He still holds the record for career doubles, has the second-most base hits in school history with 308, and ranks 10th all-time in UE history with a .339 career batting average. Carroll earned all-conference and all-region honors on the UE infield during his four-year career, before being named to the Missouri Valley Conference’s All-Centennial Team in 2007 as one of the top players in league history.

Carroll graduated from UE in 2001 with a degree in Human Kinetics and Sport Studies. Wes and his wife, Ashley, a former soccer standout at the University of Evansville, reside in Evansville with their two children.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – With an even score of 72, University of Evansville’s Kate Petrova holds the individual lead at the Braun Intercollegiate.

Petrova completed Monday’s opening 18 holes with an even mark at 72 at Oak Meadow Country Club.  She is two strokes ahead of four players who are tied for second place.

Finishing the day at 2-over was Mallory Russell.  Her score of 74 has the redshirt senior in a tie for third place, just two off the pace of Petrova.  She is tied with three others for the runner-up position.  One behind her was Louise Standtke.  The freshman carded a 3-over 75 and is tied for 7th.

Izzy Steele and Trinity Dubbs completed Evansville’s “A” team.  Steele posted an 84 while Dubbs checked in with an 86.

Evansville’s “B” team was led by the duo of Elizabeth Mercer and Jane Grankina.  Mercer finished the round with an 80 while Grankina was one behind with an 81.  Destynie Sheridan completed the day with an 85 Adeline Wittmer and Mia Cruz posted rounds of 95 and 97, respectively.

Indiana State holds the lead in the team standings with a 301.  They are four strokes ahead of the Purple Aces entering Tuesday’s final round.  Purdue Fort Wayne is in third, two shots behind UE.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Another superb effort saw Giulia Cardona finish with 26 kills on Monday as the University of Evansville volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match at Indiana State.

Cardona led all players with her 26 kills while hitting .314 in the contest.  She added 12 digs.  Ainoah Cruz recorded a match-high 18 digs while Kora Ruff picked up a double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs.

Set 1 – ISU 25, UE 23

Both teams swapped the lead in the opening moments of the set but with the score tied at 10-10, the Sycamores scored three in a row and six out of seven to wrestle away a 16-11 lead.  The Purple Aces stormed back as three players registered kills as they tied the game at 19-19.  Following a time out, the Sycamores were able to complete the frame with a win and take a 1-0 lead.

Set 2 – ISU 25, UE 23

The second set was very similar to the first as the squads exchanged the lead in the early moments before ISU flexed its muscle midway through.  With the game tied at 12-12, Indiana State scored four in a row before opening a 5-point lead at 22-17.  Just as they did in the first, UE never gave up.  With Ruff doing the serving, the Aces scored four in a row as Cardona racked up three kills to cut the deficit to one.

Another kill by Cardona tied the score at 23-23, but it was the Sycamores posting the final two points to take a 2-0 match lead.

Set 3 – ISU 25, UE 21

Evansville had the upper hand through most of the set as Ruff opened with an ace to help UE score the opening four points.  After ISU fought back to take a 10-9 lead, the Aces countered with a 4-0 run to go up 13-10.  Krystell Pappas was efficient on the serve while Cardona had two more kills.

With the Aces up 16-13, the Sycamores took control with a 7-1 run that gave them a 20-17 edge.  UE was unable to overcome the rally, falling by a 25-21 margin.  The Aces remain on the road this weekend with matches at UNI and Drake.

ST. LOUIS – On the heels of one of the most impressive weekends you will ever see, University of Evansville senior Giulia Cardona earned Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week honors on Monday.

In a weekend that will go down in the record books, Cardona recorded an average of 7.44 kills per set while hitting an equally impressive .321 to lead the University of Evansville to wins over Southern Illinois and Missouri State.

Cardona finished Friday's match against the Salukis with 37 kills.  It was the third-highest total in an NCAA match this season and second-highest in a 5-set contest.  Her effort was just three off the Missouri Valley Conference single-match record of 40.  She hit .330 and finished with 11 digs and two block assists.

The native of Argentina followed that up with a 30-kill performance in a 4-set win over Missouri State.  She hit .310 while adding 11 digs, 3 service aces and a pair of block assists as she recorded a double-double in each match.

With her recent efforts, Cardona has assumed the NCAA lead in kills per set with 5.43 per game over the course of the 2024 season.
