Congratulations

* Debbie Brenton, Asst Director of Disability Services, published as a co-author in recent JPED issue

Please join the Office of Counseling and Disability Services in celebrating the latest accomplishment of Assistant Director of Disability Services, Debbie Brenton. She recently contributed to an article in the Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability with a group of co-authors. The article, titled "Evidence-Based Career Development: A Community of Practice for Disability Resources and Career Services Professionals", is a testament to the work Debbie and others on campus have been doing to not only provide students with disabilities an accessible educational experience but also opportunities for success and growth in their chosen career fields. She has worked closely with other departments, particularly with the Center for Career Development, to ensure students in her program have a well-rounded and holistic experience at the University.

For those interested, the paper can be read here. In the future, it will be included in the AHEAD (Association on Higher Education and Disability) Database as a resource for other Disability Services professionals!

Congratulations, Debbie!

* Owusu scores second goal in loss to Butler

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Evansville men’s soccer team suffered its second loss in a row in a 4-1 match against the Butler Bulldogs.

Graduate forward Sami Owusu (Denver, Colo. / Dayton) found the back of the net for the second time this season in the 69th minute, but it was too little too late to rally the Purple Aces on Tuesday night. UE got off to a quick start, putting up the first shot of the night. But it was Butler who struck first in the ninth minute on a solo shot from the left side of the 18 from freshman Jose Angel Luna.

Momentum shifted to the Bulldogs, but Evansville found its offense again in the 15th minute. The Aces took four shots in under two minutes, coming close but not quite finding the back of the net. The pace of play evened out between the two teams until Butler broke through for a second goal in the 35th minute. UE headed into the second half staring down a two-goal deficit, looking to break through on offense after leading in shots through the first 45 minutes.

Evansville came out of the half with a new energy, firing off four shots in the first seven minutes of the second half. But yet again the Bulldogs found a way to get to the back of the net in the 55th minute to make it a three-goal deficit for the Aces. UE wouldn’t let themselves be shut out of the match as Owusu scored in the 69th minute on a wide-arching right-footed shot off a defensive Butler play.

The goal gave Evansville some new life late in the game as forward Kai Phillip (Diego Martin, Trinidad, and Tobago) had a chance inside the attacking third two minutes later. While midfielder Jose Vivas (Teurel, Spain) had a shot ring off the post, coming just inches from his second goal in as many games. The Aces surging comeback was stymied by the Bulldogs in the final eight minutes as the Bulldogs added a fourth and final goal in the 85th minute.

Owusu was UE’s only player to register a point on the night while forward Nacho Diaz Barragan (Almeria, Spain) led the team with five shot attempts and three landing on goal. Evansville returns home to begin Missouri Valley Conference action on Saturday night. The Aces welcome another Bulldog team to town in the Drake Bulldogs on Sept. 14th. Kick-off from Arad McCutchan Field is set for 7 p.m.

* UE men's soccer heads to Butler for midweek match

The Purple Aces suffered their first loss of the season on Friday evening at Lindenwood. It was a late-game heart breaker for UE that jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as the Lions scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of the match on a penalty kick goal. Tuesday night's game against Butler will be Evansville's first since the 2019 season when the Aces lost to the Bulldogs 2-0 in Indianapolis. UE is looking for its first win against Butler since the 2013 season.

The Bulldogs come into Tuesday night's match with a 2-1-2 record on the season. Butler is returning home after a close loss to fellow Missouri Valley Conference opponent Bowling Green after the Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second half. The Bulldogs weren't able to make up the deficit late in the game, recording their first loss of the season. Butler is led by junior forward Josemir Gomez on offense with four goals, 15 shots, and seven shots on goal through five games in 2024.

After taking the second-most shots on the team through five games, senior midfielder Jose Vivas (Teurel, Spain) broke through with his first goal of the season on Friday night. Vivas had Evansville's first goal at Lindenwood in the 9th minute, taking a shot from the top of the penalty box that sailed into the bottom left corner of the net for the score.

Despite the loss, the Aces still lead the Missouri Valley Conference in shots per game and shots on goal per game. UE is currently averaging 14.6 shots per game with 7 of those landing on goal. Evansville is 18th in the nation in shots on goal per game while 34th in shots per game.
