* Friars defeat Aces in weekend finale

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – In a match that saw the University of Evansville volleyball team give Providence all it could handle, the Friars outlasted the Purple Aces in a 3-0 match on Sunday afternoon at Coliseo Mario Morales.

Leading the way for UE was Giulia Cardona with team-highs in both kills (13) and digs (11).  Melanie Feliciano wrapped up the day with seven kills and eight digs.  Kora Ruff added 25 assists.

Game 1 – PROV 28, UE 26

A quick start saw the Friars jump out to a 3-0 lead before the Aces rallied back.  Consecutive kills from Angelica Gonzalez Maltes tied the score at 5-5 before a Providence error gave UE its first lead at 6-5.  Evansville continued to play well as a rally that included a Cardona kill gave her team its largest lead at 15-10.

An ace from Cardona matched the 5-point lead at 17-12 before Providence made a run.  Five in a row tie things up, but Josdarilee Caraballo notched a kill to put UE in front.  A pair of kills by Feliciano helped Evansville earn set point with a 24-20 lead, but the Friars rallied once again.  Five in a row put them back in front before they finished with a 28-26 win.

Game 2 – PROV 25, UE 15

Cardona gave Evansville an early 3-2 lead in the second frame while the Friars regained the advantage with an 8-1 stretch that gave them a 10-4 lead.  Feliciano picked up a kill that helped UE cut the deficit to 10-7 before Providence took control, pulling away for a 25-15 decision.

Game 3 – PROV 25, UE 20

Things were close once again in the third set as the score was tied at 7-7.  A kill from Cardona saw the Aces go up 9-7 while a Feliciano kill solidified a 15-11 lead.  The Friars rallied with four in a row before an error put UE on top at 16-15.

With the score knotted at 16-16, a 5-1 run was the difference as they would clinch the match with a 25-20 victory.  The home slate opens for the Aces on Friday with the Dunn Hospitality Tournament.  Evansville faces Chicago State at 10 a.m. and Samford at 7:30 p.m. Friday before taking on Miami Ohio at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

* UE men's soccer to celebrate 50th anniversary against USI

The Purple Aces are off to their best start since 2017 after picking up back-to-back wins to begin the 2024 season. UE shutout the Memphis Tigers 3-0 in their first trip to the Buff City since 2011 on Sunday night. Powered by two goals from senior forward Nacho Diaz Barragan (Almeria, Spain), Evansville heads into this weekend's match with a perfect record.

Southern Indiana is looking for their first win and their first Mayor's Cup on Sunday night. The Screaming Eagles dropped a heartbreaker Thursday, falling in the final four seconds, 3-2, to the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. Freshman midfielder Ahiro Nakamae currently leads USI on offense and is the first freshman to have three goals in his first three matches since Eric Ramirez in 2016.

Thanks to his offensive effort in the first week of the season, Diaz Barragan was named the MVC Offensive Player of the Week. It was Diaz Barragan's fourth time being named Player of the Week and the first since the 2022 season. After a week of play, Diaz Barragan helps lead the Missouri Valley Conference in goals per game (1.50) along with being in the Top three in points per game (3.00), shot accuracy (83.3%), shots on goal per game (2.50), total goals (3.00), and total points (6.00)

Freshman goalkeeper Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill. / Elk Grove HS) continues to impress after two games in the net for the Aces. Mroz notched the first clean sheet of his collegiate career on Sunday against the Tigers. Mroz is second in the Valley in save percentage (90.0%) and saves per game (4.5) while being third in shutouts (1) and total saves (9).

On Sunday night the Aces will celebrate the program's 50th anniversary during the Mayor's Cup. Alumni from across the program's 50th year will be recognized during halftime on Sunday.

* Cardona's 30-kill match leads Aces to win over UPR

Giulia Cardona led the University of Evansville volleyball team with 30 kills and 16 digs in a 3-1 win over the University of Puerto Rico – Rio Piedras on Saturday at Coliseo Mario Morales.

Cardona hit .397 on the night while adding an ace.  Feliciano also had a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs.  Kora Ruff completed the night with 52 assists while Madisyn Steele posted a block solo and 10 block assists.

Game 1 – UE 25, UPR 15

Angelica Gonzalez Maltes had an efficient start, recording two early kills to put the Aces up 5-3.  Giulia Cardona registered her third tally of the night to extend the lead to 8-4 before Madisyn Steele got on the board to make it a 12-7 game.

It was the defense who came through over the net sequence with Maltes and Steele teaming up on consecutive blocks as the lead grew to eight points at 17-9.  Evansville continued to add to its lead, taking the set by a score of 25-15.  Cardona had six kills while Steele had five block assists.

Game 2 – UPR 28, UE 26

Evansville’s defense continued its solid play in the second frame as Chloe Cline and Maltes had a block assist to double up UPR, 6-3.  Cardona notched an ace to extend the lead to four while Cline had a nice play in the middle to make it an 11-6 game.

Just when it looked like the Aces were primed to pull away, Puerto Rico – Rio Piedras stormed back.  After closing to 15-13, UPR tied the score at 19-19 on a service ace.  UE regained its composure as kills by Melanie Feliciano and Steele put their squad back on top.  UPR did not relent, staging a late rally of their own, taking a 24-22 lead.  Cardona tied the score at 24-24 with a pair of kills, but UPR was victorious in extra points, 28-26.

Game 3 – UE 25, UPR 23

Three Cardona kills set the Aces up with an early 5-3 edge before UPR tied the game at 6-6.  An ace from Krystell Pappas highlighted a 4-0 run that saw Evansville jump back in front.  Evansville extended its lead to 17-12 when Maltes added another kill, but UPR staged another rally, cutting the deficit to just a point at 19-18.

Chloe Cline righted the ship with a huge kill before Cardona added the two clinching kills to put Evansville back in front with a 2-1 match lead.

Game 4 – UE 25, UPR 17

UE had its best start of the evening, scoring the first four points of the set with Feliciano recording two kills.  Trailing 5-1, UPR posted three in a row in a rally that would eventually see them tie the game at 8-8.  Two kills from Steele helped the Aces go back in front by a 15-10 tally.  From there, the Aces clinched the match on the strength of a 25-17 win.

On Sunday, UE completes the trip with a 3 p.m. CT match versus Providence.

* Aces women's soccer blanked by Louisville

The University of Evansville women’s soccer team struggled to find its offense against the Louisville Cardinals in a 3-0 loss.

Sunday night the Purple Aces were only able to find the net one time with a lone shot on goal in the second half. Louisville’s offense and defense overwhelmed UE throughout the game, but Evansville broke through in the final 35 minutes. It wouldn’t be enough to net a goal as the one shot on goal was a quick save down low. Graduate goalkeeper Myia Danek (Laingsburg, Mich. / Laingsburgh HS) had a career-high game in saves on Sunday night with 12 for an 80% save percentage.

It was a tough start to the match for the Aces as the Cardinals scored in the 11th minute to take an early lead. UE continued to put their bodies on the line with five blocked shots in the first 20 minutes. The fast pace of Louisville’s offense eventually wore down Evansville as the Cardinals found the back of the net again in the 37th minute.

After halftime, the Aces offense began to get going as sophomore forward Paige Radel (Metamora, Ohio / Evergreen HS) hit the first shot of the game in the 57th minute, but the shot sailed just a bit too high over the net. Louisville then turned around and scored their third and final goal in the 59th minute. It took until the final 10 minutes of the match for UE’s offense to get going again.

Freshman defender Emmy Brenner (Arlington, Tenn. / St. Benedict at Auburndale HS) recorded her first shot and shot on goal with Evansville in the 81st minute. Brenner hit another shot in the 82nd minute but it went high. While sophomore midfielder Ashlyn Koutsos (Cumming, Ga. / West Forsyth HS) added the fourth and final shot for the Aces.

UE continues its Power Four road swing next week with a game at Indiana. Kickoff against the Hoosiers on Thursday, September 5th is set for 7 p.m. CT.

* Aces men's soccer keeps Mayor’s Cup in 3-1 win over USI

The Mayor’s Cup will stay on the east side of Evansville as the University of Evansville men’s soccer team won against Southern Indiana on Sunday night.

Forward Nacho Diaz Barragan (Almeria, Spain) scored his second brace of the year to lead the Purple Aces to a 3-1 victory over USI. Despite falling behind early in the match, UE rallied for three straight goals to keep the Mayor’s Cup. Graduate forward Sami Owusu (Denver, Colo. / Dayton) scored his first goal as an Ace, while defender Nacho Garcia (Zaragoza, Spain) and midfielder Jacopo Fedrizzi (Giulia, Italy) picked up their first assists of the season.

“It always feels good to win and to win the first one of the season at home,” says Head Coach Robbe Tarver. “And it’s against a team that’s really important to beat because they’re our crosstown rival. So to do that at home and to be 3-0 is an awesome feeling. And I think we’ve put ourselves in a really good position to start the season this year.”

Evansville began the match with an up-tempo offense, challenging the Screaming Eagles with three shots in the first 15 minutes. But it would be USI that found the back of the net first in the 17th minute on a shot at the top of the box that just squeaked past freshman goalkeeper Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill. / Elk Grove HS). The Screaming Eagles wouldn’t lead for long as the Aces found the equalizer in the 23rd minute off a corner kick from Fedrizzi.

After Fedrizzi’s initial kick, Garcia rose to head the ball to the left side of the net. Diaz Barragan then completed the attack with his own header that sailed into the far left side of the net. UE scored again less than 10 minutes later as a pass from the left side of the backline from Diaz Barragan found Owusu on the left side of the penalty box. The left-footed shot from Owusu rocketed past USI’s goalkeeper into the middle of the net.

Evansville’s offense continued to press to end the first half, tallying three more shots in the final 12 minutes of play. Things began to get chippy in the second half as both teams picked up yellow cards and several fouls in the first part of the half. For the first 15 minutes, the two squads matched each other in shots. But the Aces offense began to break away in the final 25 minutes of the match.

UE sealed the win with a third and final goal in the 83rd minute. Diaz Barragan scored his fifth goal of the season off a cross at the top right of the box from fifth-year defender Tobias Bak (Taastrup, Denmark). Tapping the goal in with his left foot on the far left side of the net, Diaz Barragan took the Valley lead for goals scored this season. Evansville closed down the game with three more shots and a corner kick in the final six minutes for its third win of the year.

The Aces combined for 20 shots on Sunday, a number not seen in a match from UE since 2021. Bak led the way in shots with four while Diaz Barragan, Owusu, midfielder Jose Vivas (Teruel, Spain), and winger Auden Engen Vik (Trondheim, Norway) had three each. Mroz made two saves in the win to help Evansville’s back line.

The Aces continue a brief two-game homestand with a match against Eastern Illinois on Wednesday, September 4th. Kickoff from Arad McCutchan Stadium is set for 7 p.m.

* Aces drop season opener to Akron

Angelica Gonzalez Maltes tallied a team-high 13 kills as the University of Evansville volleyball team fell to Akron by a 3-0 final at Coliseu Mario Morales.

Melanie Feliciano posted 11 kills while Giulia Cardona added seven.  Feliciano added eight digs to lead UE while Kora Ruff finished with 30 assists.  Emanouela Christodoulou had a match-best 15 kills to lead Akron in the win as the Zips finished the night hitting .409.

Game 1 – Akron 25, UE 19

After Akron opened an early 4-1 edge, Angelica Gonzalez Maltes recorded a pair of kills to cut the deficit to 6-4 before a Giulia Cardona kill made it a 1-point game at 7-6.  The Zips quickly regrouped to go up 15-7 before UE cut into the deficit once again.

Krystell Pappas notched an ace to get her squad back within five at 19-14, but a late surge by the Zips saw them open the evening with a 25-19 decision.

Game 2 – Akron 25, UE 17

Evansville faced another early deficit with the Zips jumping out to a 5-2 lead.  UE quickly made its way back, tying the game at 5-5, but another run by Akron set them up with an 11-8 lead before extending it to 15-9, forcing the Aces to use their second time out of the set.  From there, Akron held strong, cruising to a 25-17 win and a 2-0 match lead.

Game 3 – Akron 25, UE 21

It was the Aces with the big start in the third set, picking up the opening four points of the game.  Gonzalez Maltes added a pair of kills that made it a 7-2 game while Lexi Owen added a kill on the ensuing rally to force Akron to use a time out.  The stoppage worked to the Zips advantage as they posted the next five before extending the run to take their first advantage at 10-9.

UE posted the next tally to tie it up as the squads battled to a 16-16 score.  The Zips registered the ensuing seven points to retake control, but the Aces staged a furious late rally.  Melanie Feliciano notched her 11th kill of the evening to cap a 5-1 stretch that made it a 24-21 game.  The rally came up just short with Akron taking the frame by a 25-21 score to clinch the match.

On Saturday, the Aces face the University of Puerto Rico – Rio Piedras at 6 p.m. CT.

* UE women's soccer visits Louisville for first matchup in 20 years

Sunday night's match will be Evansville's first trip to Louisville in 20 years. The Aces last visited campus in 2004 but will play at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium for the first time. UE will look to capture its first win over the Cardinals in 30 years on Sunday. Evansville's one win in the brief series came at home in 1994 when the Aces offense exploded for four goals.

Louisville comes into Sunday's game with unbeaten through five games following a 1-1 draw against Cincinnati on Thursday. Offense has been the Cardinals calling card early in the season with 14 goals through five games, just a goal shy of their entire total in 2023. Louisville also has had nine different players score this season for a full field attack.

UE captured its first win of the season on Thursday evening in a 2-1 win over the Lindenwood Lions. It was the Aces' first ever program match with the Lions, giving them a 1-0 series lead. Evansville's offense exploded in the second half against Lindenwood, taking all nine shots of the game in the final 45 minutes. The Aces put two goals in the back of the net in under five minutes to secure the win.

Junior forward Amy Velazquez (Avon, Ind. / Avon HS) and senior forward Hailey Autenrieb (Cincinnati / Seton HS) picked up their first goals of 2024 on Thursday night. Velazquez goal was the second of her career. While Autenrieb netted career goal number five.

Sunday night's match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra at 6 p.m. CT and is available with an ESPN+ subscription.
