* Professor Kimberling coauthors article in new geometry journal

Early this year, Dr. Kimberling was invited to contribute the first article in a new journal. The name of the new journal is simply Geometry. At the time of invitation, Dr. Kimberling was researching certain recently discovered geometric transformations, which he and his colleague, Peter J. C. Moses, subsequently studied in depth. The result was published in July and is indeed the first article in the first volume of Geometry. You can view the article, entitled "Unary Operations on Barycentric Coordinates in the Plane of a Triangle": First Article. The publisher, MDPI (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute), is the world's largest publisher of online academic journals—more than 433 journals covering a remarkable range of subjects. The interesting history of this rapidly growing Swiss-based publisher can be accessed here: History, 1995-2024.

* UE women's soccer drops first road match to Western Kentucky

The University of Evansville women’s soccer team couldn’t overcome an early second-half deficit in a 4-1 loss to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

The Purple Aces found the back of the net for the first time in the young 2024 season on Sunday night. Redshirt freshman forward Paige Radel (Metamora, Ohio / Evergreen HS) netted her first collegiate goal in the 68th minute with some help from senior forward Hailey Autenrieb (Cincinnati / Seaton HS).

But one goal wasn’t enough for UE to keep up with a second-half offensive onslaught form the Hilltoppers. It was a quiet first half as only three shots found their way on goal from either side. Sophomore goalkeeper Elke Travis (Henderson, Nev. / Faith Lutheran HS) stopped both attempts from WKU in the first 45 minutes as it was a nil-nil game going into the second half.

It was a quick start in the second half for Evansville as sophomore midfielder Ashlyn Koutsos (Cumming, Ga. / West Forsyth HS) launched a shot to the left corner. But the Aces found themselves down early as the Hilltoppers scored two goals in under three minutes shortly after. UE cut into Western Kentucky’s lead in the 68th minute as Radel found the bottom right corner of the net off a long cross from Autenrieb.

The lone goal wouldn’t be enough for Evansville to come back from the one-goal deficit. Despite a quality chance in the 80th minute for forward Amy Velazquez (Avon, Ind. / Avon HS) the Aces didn’t find the back of the net again. But the Hilltoppers continued to pour on the pressure, resulting in two more goals in the 81st and 89th minutes, handing UE a 4-1 loss.

Evansville returns home this upcoming week for a matchup with the Lindenwood Lions. It will be the Aces first program game against the Lions on Thursday, August 29th. Kickoff for Thursday’s match is set for 6 p.m. from Arad McCutchan Stadium.

* Aces men's soccer comes up big in win against Memphis

An early lead helped the University of Evansville men’s soccer team cruise to a 3-0 win over the Memphis Tigers on Sunday evening.

Senior forward Nacho Diaz Barragan (Almeria, Spain) added goals two and three of the year in the second half to help the Purple Aces to their second win in as many games. Junior defender Nacho Diaz Caneja (Coruña, Spain / Oregon State) also put up a goal for UE in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over the Tigers, helping Evansville to an early lead with a goal in the seventh minute. Freshman goalkeeper Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill. / Elk Grove HS) picked up the first clean sheet of his career, making six stops in the win.

The Aces got off to a hot start as senior midfielder Jose Vivas (Teruel, Spain) took the first shot of the game in less than 30 seconds. And UE kept the pressure going as Diaz Caneja found the back of the net in the seventh minute. Through traffic, Vivas poked out a cross to Diaz Caneja in front of the net that Diaz Caneja buried into the left side of the goal.

While Evansville wouldn’t find the back of the net again in the first half, the team did take the lead in shots five attempts to the Tigers two. It was a slower start to the second half for both teams after some fireworks near the end of the first half resulted in a yellow card for players on both sides. But it wasn’t long until the Aces found their offense again in the 62nd minute.

Diaz Barragan found his way around the Tigers goalkeeper after an initial blocked shot. The second attempt went into the top left corner of the net for his first unassisted goal of the season. Just 11 minutes later Diaz Barragan scored his third goal of the season for his first brace of the year.

In the 73rd minute of the game, fifth-year forward Kai Phillip took a free kick from the right line of the penalty area that found Diaz Barragan just past the penalty arc. Diaz Barragan then buried the cross with his right foot into the bottom right corner of the net.  In the final 17 minutes of the game, Mroz faced nine shots with three saves to keep it a shutout for UE.

Evansville is currently off to its best start since the 2017 season when the Aces began the year with four straight wins. UE will try to add win number three in a week against Southern Indiana on Sunday, September 1st. Along with hosting the Mayor’s Cup, Evansville will celebrate the program’s 50th season next weekend. Kickoff for Sunday’s match is set for 7 p.m.

* Intramural field renovation complete ahead of 2024-25 school year

Construction is complete on a $1.2 million intramural field renovation on the University of Evansville campus.  In a collaboration between campus and Purple Aces athletics, the project is highlighted by a full turf field on the north side of campus.

This is the latest in a number of projects that have been completed on the UE campus.  The new field is already being utilized by the Aces soccer programs and is set to be used by intramural squads moving forward.  It also provides an open recreational campus area for the general student population.

“With the completion of new turf field, we are continuing to enhance the experience of each student at the University of Evansville,” Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students Dr. Rachel S. Carpenter exclaimed.  “It is special to partner with athletics in a way that has a positive impact on the wellness of the entire university!”

In total, the turf measures at 308’ x 282’ with the lined playing field being 292’ x 225’.  The facility is the first outdoor on-campus turf field that will be open to campus.  It will be available for use on a year-round basis. Funding for the field was completely covered through the sale of UE’s property on Division Street to Wesselman Woods in June of 2023.

“One of the most important goals within our athletics department is to enhance the relationships we have with the campus community.  It is exciting to be able to collaborate on a project like this, which positively benefits every member of our campus community,” UE Athletics Director Dr. Ziggy Siegfried stated.  “Our soccer programs have already been able to utilize the field for practice and we look forward to the entire campus utilizing its benefits.”

* UE women's soccer has first road test at Western Kentucky

UE women's soccer will have its first road test of the season tomorrow night. The Aces travel to Western Kentucky and hope to get their first win against the Hilltoppers in almost 20 years. The two teams renewed their non-conference series after a five-year break last season. UE did pick up its first result against WKU since 2013 in 2023 after a nil-nil draw at Arad McCutchan Stadium.

The Hilltoppers come into Sunday's match with an even 1-1-0 record. WKU bounced back from a season-opening loss to Austin Peay with a 4-0 win against Division II Union (Tenn.). The Hilltoppers were picked to finish third in the preseason Conference USA coach's poll. WKU finished third in Conference USA last season with a 4-2-2 record in conference play while being 6-5-7 overall.

Evansville began the 2024 season almost a week and a half ago in a tight 0-0 match against Lipscomb at Arad McCutchan Stadium. After losing to the Bison 3-0 in 2023, the scoreless draw on Thursday, August 15th showed the team's improvement from the prior season.

The Aces are one of only 37 teams that have not allowed a goal after the first full week of the 2024 season. In the MVC, UE is one of only two teams that hasn't allowed a goal with Indiana State.
Evansville is in the Top 10 in NCAA Division I in fewest fouls committed at 5.00 fouls per match.  The Aces only had five whistles against them in their first 90 minutes of action.

Fifth-year goalkeeper Myia Danek (Laingsburg, Mich.) made four saves for UE in her first match of her final season. In particular, Danek made a high diving save in the 86th minute to help Evansville to a shutout. It was Danek's seventh clean sheet of her career.
