Congratulations to those who were recognized at the Fall Conference for their twenty-five years of dedicated service to UE.

Dr. Lora Becker is Professor of Psychology and Director of General Education. She received her PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience in 2002 and her Master of Arts from Binghamton University.

Her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology was from Wright State University. Lora has taught over 20 different course topics along with numerous teaching-related talks, presentations, posters, and articles. She has worked extensively on research projects with over 60 UE students culminating in publications and presentations.

Lora is also very active in university service having served on various committees of the Faculty Senate, also serving as a Senator, vice chair twice, and chair of the Faculty Senate. She has taken part in numerous other committees along with being a faculty advisor to several student groups. She was founder and Director of the Major Discovery Program and is currently the Faculty Liaison. She also coordinated the modernization of the Neuroscience program.

In 2017, Lora received the Eykamp Prize for extraordinary contributions made by a UE faculty member. Other awards include Dean’s Advisor of the Year in 2004, Dean’s Teaching Award in 2007, Global Scholar in 2015, and Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience Distinguished Mentor in 2016.

Michael Tessier, Mike started his work at UE serving as Associate Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life. He earned his BA in Social Sciences from the University of Northern Colorado and his Master of Science in College Student Personnel Administration from Western Illinois University. He was promoted to Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs In 2007.

Mike has had oversight of major departments in Student Affairs. Direct reports have included Student Publications, Multicultural Affairs, International Student Services, and Counseling and Disability Services. He has served as a liaison to the Parents’ Association and Parents’ Council, served as a primary support for UE Honor Code Cases, and an editor of the Student Handbook. In his early years, he initiated faculty/student interaction programs, as part of a grant from the Lilly Endowment.

Mike has served UE in numerous forms and functions. Here are just a few: Served on the MLK Planning committee since 1996; Spearheaded assessment for Student Affairs and compiling the 2014 Student Affairs Learning Outcomes Report for HLC; Chaired the Tobacco-Free Task Force and Implementation Committee; Worked together with Facilities in renovation projects for Hale, Moore, and Morton Brentano Halls. New construction initiatives included Jones Hall, Townhouses, New Hall, and Lincoln Commons; Served on the Coronavirus Heath Care Task Force and coordinated quarantine and isolation needs for our students during the pandemic; Served as Interim Dean of Students in 2021-22 upon the retirement of Dr. Dana Clayton; and assisted with coordination of the Center for Student Engagement in 2022-23 and received Advisor of the Year for his work with SGA.

Dr. Laura Dwyer, Associate Professor of Management, earned her PhD in 1999 from Purdue University in Organizational Behavior and her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Indiana University in 1985. She became a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Illinois in 1987. Before attending graduate school, Dr. Dwyer worked for eight years at Amoco Corporation in Chicago, now British Petroleum, in various accounting positions.

She is a prominent scholar and teacher specializing in the areas of organizational behavior, human resources, decision making, and leadership. Her strong interests are in publishing peer-reviewed pedagogical journals in the areas of business education and higher education. She has presented her research findings at numerous regional and national conferences. Of particular interest is her research titled “Leadership self-efficacy and managers' motivation for leading change.”

Dr. Dwyer received the Berger Award for Scholarship in 2018 in recognition of her notable research and teaching. She also received the Schroeder School of Business Dean's Teaching Award in 2002, 2010, and 2021, the Schroeder School Dean's Research Award in 2004, the Schroeder School Dean’s Service Award in 2014 and 2020, and the Schroeder School Societal Impact Research Award in 2023.

Service Award - Margaret Atwater-Singer 

It is with great pleasure the University of Evansville Berger Award Committee bestows the 2024 Berger Service Award to Margaret Atwater-Singer in recognition for her exemplary service to the University of Evansville. Meg has consistently demonstrated commitment to the service of UE since she arrived in 1997.

Meg’s contributions to the University Libraries are remarkable. Her clarity of vision, her ability to identify needs and areas of concerns, and to set goals and lead an effort to achieve them have been invaluable in myriad ways – but most especially in the leadership she demonstrated during the renovation of the Bower-Suhrheinrich Library in 2014 and 2015. Thanks to Meg’s ability to think strategically and to plan effectively, the libraries were able to provide students and faculty with a viable service during the months of disruption. She has led the creation of multiple learning tools for library student workers, restructured the Access Services Department, participated in in-class instruction sessions, one-on-one research consultations with students, and has been instrumental in library open-houses.

In addition to her prominent role at the University Libraries, Meg served as an advisor in the Pre-Physical Therapy Program. She also served as an elected representative of her colleagues, and in other instances -for example, on ad-hoc bodies- she was appointed by those who desired her participation because of her long record of conscientious service and her extensive institutional memory. Her impressive service record includes serving on various committees including the Athletic, Curriculum, Faculty Professional Affairs, Faculty Appeals, Admissions and Standards, Promotion and Tenure and other ad-hoc task forces. She also served as the Board of Trustees’ Faculty Observer and Faculty Representative of the BOT’s Institutional Advancement Committee. Each year, she has increased her responsibilities with the Senate’s Executive Committee, culminating with her service as a Chair starting in 2022 and she continued serving in that role when needed for an additional year in 2023-2024. She also served as the Assistant Grand Marshal working to coordinate the University Ceremonies including Commencements and Academic Convocations.

In addition, she assumed the task of organizing and planning the annual Faculty Scholarship Display and Reception. The list of Meg’s service to UE is long and her loyalty to the people who make up the fabric of the university is unparalleled. It is with profound respect; the Berger Award Committee confers the Berger Award for Service to Professor Meg Atwater-Singer.

Scholarship Award - Dr. Clark Kimberling

It is with great pleasure the University of Evansville Berger Award Committee confers the 2024 Berger Award for Scholarship to Dr. Clark Kimberling. Dr. Kimberling joined UE in 1970 as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and became a Full Professor in 1982. His impressive breadth and depth of intellectual contributions include the following:

• 128 publications of mathematical research on geometry, number-theory, combinatorics, and probability

• 24 publications on the history of mathematics, science, music and social history

• 5 Mathematical Education Publications, including books, CD, and Java websites

• 27 Mathematical Education Publications in the Mathematics Teacher Journal

• 11 Mathematical Education publications in the Indiana Mathematics Teacher Journal

• 14 compositions for Church Choirs

• 22 compositions/arrangements for instrument One of his nominators described him “talented polymath scholar.”

His passion, talent, and love of discovery has enabled him to accomplish a vast volume of research. The University of Evansville proudly hosts a huge scholarly website known as Clark Kimberling’s Encyclopedia of Triangle Centers (ETC). A Wikipedia page, covering the ETC, was created in 2008 when ETC presented fewer than 4,000 entries. Now, 16 years later, ETC includes more than 60,000 entries. ETC has been cited in more than 500 scholarly articles in various books and mathematics journals. In addition, Dr. Kimberling has been avidly composing numerous scores for handbells, recorders, flute, and voice. He has expanded a website, hosted by UE since 2000, that is mainly dedicated to New Harmony Scientists, Educators, Writers, and Artists. Most recently in 2023, he published an 18-part website titled, Cornelius Tiebout Engravings. Tiebout was a leading American copperplate engraver who moved along with nationally known Philadelphians to New Harmony in 1826. Dr. Kimberling is a past Vice-President of the Fibonacci Association, which focuses on Fibonacci numbers and related mathematics, emphasizing new results, research proposals, challenging problems, and new proofs of old ideas.

He has presented number-theoretic research papers at international conferences of this organization in Canada, Greece, Hungary, Austria, Mexico, Luxemburg, France, Germany, Scotland, and the US. A search for “Kimberling” in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences generates more than 20,000 hits, among them Kimberling paraphrases, Kimberling’s expulsion array and Kimberling’s sums. A Google search for “Kimberling’s theorem” produces several different theorems. The main one is a result in probability theory which found applications in financial investment algorithms. Asked what his favorite contribution to mathematics has been, he said it was the subjects of interspersions, dispersions, and fractal sequences, published in 1993 in the Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, and of course, the definition of “triangle center,” in a 1994 publication, which led to creating the Encyclopedia of Triangle Centers. Therefore, based on his substantive and sustained scholarly activities spanning over half a century, the Berger Award Committee confers the Berger Award for Scholarship to Dr. Clark Kimberling.

How do I register for a Parking Permit?

You can register for your Parking Permit through the UE Self-Service portal https://selfservice.evansville.edu using your UE username and password. The Parking Permits link is under “UE Forms.” Click on the menu icon (upper left hand corner) > UE Forms > Employee > Parking Permits. If you need assistance with accessing self-service, please contact OTS help desk at (812) 488-2077.

How much does a Parking Permit cost and how do I pay for it?

Employee Parking Permits are $50 for the academic year.  Discounts for UE license plates are only valid if the plate is active at the time of permit registration. There are no discounts or refunds once the permit is assigned. The discounted fee for employees who have UE license plates is $25 for the academic year.

Payment options include:

• quick and easy on-line payroll deduction of $10 installments over five pay periods

• cash/check/credit card at the cashier area in Student Financial Services, Olmsted 105.

What is the process for applying and paying for a Parking Permit?

Employees will go to the appropriate link on UE Self-Service (see instructions above) and follow the processes for registering a vehicle. Once you have registered your vehicle and enrolled for payroll deduction, stop by the cashier area in Student Financial Services and pick up your Parking Permit. That’s all there is to it!

What if I don’t want to do payroll deduction?

If you opt to pay in full at Student Financial Services, you will still need to register your vehicle on self-service. Then you will need to print out the registration confirmation sheet and take it to the cashier area in Student Financial Services. The cashier will take your payment, mark your confirmation sheet as paid, and issue your permit.

What if I am a President’s Club member or have a UE license plate - does that make a difference?

President’s Club members are asked to register their vehicles on-line simply for the purposes of being able to provide timely information in the event of an emergency (ie. Someone has damaged your vehicle and we need to notify you). President’s Club stickers will be distributed via the Office of Development upon confirmation of the donation.

Where do I pick up my Permit?

Employee Parking Permits will be distributed at Student Financial Services. We strongly encourage all employees to apply and pick up their Parking Permits Monday, August 5 thru Wednesday, August 21, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. to avoid the rush of the distribution of Student Parking Permits.

Auditions for the UE Choir program will be held Tuesday, August 20, Wednesday August 21, Thursday August 22, and Friday August 23. Anyone with a love of singing is welcome to audition.

The University of Evansville Theatre is excited to invite members of our campus and the Evansville community to audition for INTO THE WOODS, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. Auditions will be held at 4 pm, Sunday, August 18, in Shanklin Theatre on the University of Evansville campus.

Those interested in auditioning should prepare a short monologue (one minute or less) from a contemporary play and a verse and a chorus of a song.  A pianist will be available for accompaniment.  Anyone is welcome to audition, and they are specifically looking for one person between the ages of 12 and 17.  Rehearsals will begin on August 21 and performances will run October 4 through 20.

The School of Engineering and Computer Science would like to congratulate Dr. Hector Will, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering, on having a paper accepted for publication. His paper Embodied Immersive Virtual Reality To Enhance The Conceptual Understanding Of Charged Particles: A Qualitative Study will appear in the December 2024 issue of Computers & Education: X Reality.

The paper discusses the design and development of an IVR tool to teach the concepts of electric fields and charged particles. Eight students from technology-related majors participated in the study. The results show a higher score and improvement between pre- and post-test results.

On Wednesday, July 31st, the Division of Student Affairs bid a fond farewell to Kate Hogan on her last day before retirement. Kate has been supporting international students since May 2004 and has served most recently as Director of Cultural Engagement and International Services. Over the years, Kate created cultural awareness and supportive policies for our students from different faiths and cultures. She worked with faculty and staff to provide trainings about different country customs and communication practices so our campus could better support students' transition to UE. She has probably worked with over 1,500 international students over 20 years and she still keeps in touch with many international UE alumni. Kate requested a small retirement celebration but we wanted to make sure our campus community knew how proud we are of her contributions to UE and her student-centered approach when supporting students from all over the world. Kate is looking forward to spending more time with her husband, Michael, and their beautiful sheep dog, Martha, while they continue with their boating, kayaking, and outdoor adventures. In their first match of the season, the University of Evansville women's soccer team blanked the Lipscomb Bison in a 0-0 draw.

Thursday evening the Purple Aces fought a close match with the Bison as fifth-year goalkeeper Myia Danek (Laingsburg, Mich./Laingsburg) made four saves to open the 2024 season with a shutout. Sophomore forward Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. /Reitz) and freshman defender Brielle LaBerge (Cumming, Ga./Forsyth Central) recorded UE's two chances on goal in the 12th and 60th minute respectively. 

"I thought it was a good match," said Head Coach Chris Pfau following Thursday's contest. "They're an extremely talented team and very well coached over the last couple of years. Last year we went down there, and the game was over within the first 15 minutes as they went up 3-0. So, there's good progress for where we are now."

"I thought the first half we were a little tired. I still think that's nerves and we've got to get past that. We lost our legs 15 minutes into the game. But the good thing is in the second half we got our second wind a little bit. There are some pieces at it that we have to keep building. Obviously finding TJ (Taylor Johnson) but on the back end, we've got to finish those opportunities. I thought Myia was lights out, the save at the end is why she's here and why she starts. So, all around a good game for the first game of the season against a very very talented team. And there's a lot to build from there."

It was an action-packed first 20 minutes at Arad McCutchan Stadium as both teams combined for five shots. Danek and Lipscomb's field players made a save each while the other three chances were off target. In the 12th minute, Johnson made it past Bison goalkeeper Kaïna Cesar and fired from the right side of the goal box. But a Bison player got in front of the ball to keep things scoreless after 13 minutes. Just under eight minutes later, Danek made her first save of the night grabbing a ball on the right side of the net. The teams headed into halftime still looking for the first goal of the night after 45 minutes of play.

It took almost 10 minutes for either side to get going in the second half, but Lipscomb midfielder Kiara Pralle tested Evansville with five straight shots in the second half. The Aces were ready for the challenge as Danek made her second save of the night against Pralle in the 53rd minute. LaBerge recorded her first shot and shot on goal as an Ace in the 60th minute taking a close chance from just outside the penalty arc. UE was able to keep things scoreless for the next 30 minutes as Danek made a diving save in the 84th minute for the nil-nil draw.

Evansville returns to the pitch in a week and a half for their first true road game of the year. The Aces head to Bowling Green to face Western Kentucky on Sunday, August 25th with match time set for 6 p.m. to be broadcast on ESPN+.

The Purple Aces first match of the 2024 season is also UE's home opener as they welcome the Lipscomb Bison to Evansville on Thursday night. The Aces bring back 20 players from the 2023 campaign including its top four offensive performers this year. Sophomore forward Chrysta Vasquez leads the way for UE after scoring two goals in her 2023 campaign. Junior midfielder Kaylee Woosley helped lead the team in points with one goal and two assists. While senior forward Hailey Autenrieb and sophomore forward Taylor Johnson followed with three points from a goal and an assist apiece. 

In a preseason poll of league head coaches, Evansville was picked to finish ninth in the Missouri Valley Conference. Missouri State landed the top spot with seven first-place votes and 116 points, closely followed by 2023 regular season champions Drake. The Aces earned 32 points in the preseason poll while UIC (3rd, 87 points), UNI (4th, 85 points), Valparaiso (5th, 83 points), and Murray State (6th, 73 points) fill out the remaining top six spots. Belmont (7th, 54 points), Indiana State (8th, 42 points), Illinois State (10th, 23 points), and Southern Illinois (11th, 22 points) round out the poll.

The Aces will look to build upon a strong defensive season in 2023. UE set a new single-season record for ties with nine draws in 17 games in 2023. Of those nine ties, four were clean sheets from goalkeeper Miya Danek. Danek returns in goal for Evansville in 2024 for her final collegiate season after making national rankings in 2023. Danek was in the Top 100 in saves per game (4.65) and total saves (79) and top five in the Valley. UE also returns All-MVC Second Team member defender Rachel Rosborough for 2024 in her fifth season.

Along with 20 returners, the Aces add 11 new players to their 2024 roster. Evansville welcomes redshirt sophomore transfer Mary McArdle, freshman Allie Lammers, Emmy Brenner, Olivia Colson, Lindley Amick, Taylor Wehrer, Olivia Mills, Anna Duncan, Maria Meade, and Brielle LaBerge. 

Lipscomb comes into the start of the 2024 season picked second in the ASUN preseason poll with two players earning preseason awards. Midfielder Bella Carapazza and defender Lucy Ream both made the preseason All-ASUN Team after big seasons in 2023. Carapazza was the 2023 ASUN Freshman of the Year while Ream was named to the 2023 ASUN All-Conference Second Team. The Bison finished 2023 in the semifinals of the ASUN Tournament as the number one seed.
