Dr. Jerrilee LaMar, Dr. Bryan Lynch, Dr. Bill Stroube, and Dr. Gregg Wilson were honored this past Sunday at the Faculty Retirement Tree Planting Ceremony and Reception.  The Redbud Appalachian Red tree that was planted in their honor is located in the inner oval closest to Olmsted Hall and the Koch Center.  They will each leave with a great legacy of successful careers and excellent service to our institution.  Please join us in wishing them the best in their retirements.

The University of Evansville’s 166th Commencement Ceremony will take place tomorrow, Saturday, May 4th to honor the Class of 2024. The ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Ford Center. No tickets are required. For those who cannot attend in-person, the ceremony will also be live streamed at www.evansville.edu/live/. This will also include closed captioning for those in need. Summer Hours

UE will reduce business hours during the summer from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Fridays. This schedule will be in place beginning Monday, May 6, and we will extend these hours for one additional week through Friday, August 9. Regular hours will return Monday, August 12.

Juneteenth

Starting this year, on Wednesday, June 19, all University offices will be closed in honor of Juneteenth. This significant day marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. We urge everyone to utilize this time for reflection and contemplation on the journey towards freedom and equality.

July 4 Holiday

The long Holiday weekend will get a little longer. The President’s Council has added one additional day to create a long holiday weekend. In addition to the University observing the July 4 holiday on Thursday, the University will also be closed on Friday, July 5.

The Secret History is the first novel by author Donna Tartt. Set in New England, the campus novel tells the story of a closely knit group of six classics students at Hampden College, a small, elite liberal arts college located in Vermont based up Bennington College where Tartt was a student.

The Secret History is an inverted detective story narrated by one of the six students, Richard Papen, who reflects years later upon a situation that let to the murder of their friend Edmund "Bunny" Corcoran- wherein the events leading up to the murder are revealed sequentially. The novel explores the circumstances and lasting effects of Bunny's death on the academically and socially isolated group of classics students of which he was a part. 

This was a best-selling debut novel. Normally a debut novel only has 10,000 orders but the Secret History had 75,000 orders and they were sold out upon release. 

The Krannert Gallery will host the Hanns Pieper UE Photography Exhibition from April 10 through May 15.  This exhibit is comprised of photography created by our campus community - active and retired.

Sessions will start immediately after lunch on May 27, then you'll check in, stay the night, and sessions will continue until about 3pm on May 28 (Eastern Time). Full participation required.

Whether you've coached a ChangeLab before, or have been thinking about doing one, this will be a great chance to unpack the experience a bit. We'll learn from experienced coaches, provide helpful tools, and help you think about this unique approach to experiential learning in your class or department.

Biol 107 (General Biology), which fulfills the lab science General Education credit (Outcome 8), will be offered during Summer Session 2 as an online, asynchronous class. Although it is generally intended for those majoring in EXSS, public health, and similar areas, all majors are welcome! The Office of Marketing is seeking a creative and driven student to join our team as a Student Worker for the fall semester. In this role, you will collaborate with the University Marketing Content Specialist, Abigail Perry, to assist in creating engaging and dynamic video content for the University's social media pages.

Responsibilities:

• Assist with the production of video content from concept to completion.
• Participate in brainstorming sessions to generate creative ideas for video projects.
• Video editing on CapCut and TikTok.
• Coordinate with Abigail to ensure projects are completed on time and meet quality standards.
• Stay updated and research current trends and techniques in video production to contribute fresh ideas and approaches.
• Attend student on-campus events and capture video content for future video projects (or recaps).

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at the University of Evansville.
• Basic understanding of video editing software (e.g., CapCut, TikTok).
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks.
• Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Family, friends and loved ones of the late Dr. Marvin E. Hartig are pleased to announce the application process for the Dr. Marvin E. Hartig Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is dedicated to the loving memory of Dr. Hartig, Dean of Evansville College’s Evening College in 1967, and administrator for the Center for Advanced Study, director of the Evansville chapter of the American Institute of Banking (AIB), and the international student advisor. In 1974, Dr. Hartig was appointed Dean of Academic Services. He retired in 1984 after serving his alma mater for thirty-five years and passed away in 2007.

This scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving sophomore student. Preference will be given to a student working while being enrolled as a full-time student. International students are encouraged to apply.

Eligible students for the 2024-2025 Hartig Memorial Scholarship will be sophomores in the 2024-2025 academic year.

The American Theatre Wing announced nominations for the 77th Annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards on Tues., April 30. The hit new Broadway play, STEREOPHONIC, by David Adjmi, garnered a historic 13 Tony Award nominations and became the most Tony-nominated play in Broadway’s history with four University of Evansville Theatre alumni attached. The production, which is nominated for “Best Play” among other awards, includes producing credits for two 2003 classmates, Nick Mills, a lead producer, and UE Assistant Professor Wes Grantom, both of whom became Tony nominees with the announcement. The production also includes Miriam Cortes ’21, Assistant to the Costume Designer, and Benjamin Anderson ’15, an understudy actor for the roles of “Charlie” and “Peter.”

“We’re all very proud of this show. But I certainly wouldn’t imagine that we would make history today as the most Tony-nominated play of all time. The work of this cast and creative team is amazing, and everyone should do their best to see it,” said Grantom.

After a hugely successful Off-Broadway run at Playwrights Horizons, STEREOPHONIC transferred to Broadway’s Golden Theatre on April 19 and recently announced an extension through Aug. 18. The 77th Annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards, airs live from the David H. Koch Theater at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City on Sun., June 16, at 7:00 p.m. CT, on CBS and Paramount+.

The biology awards honoring the outstanding achievements of UE biology students during the 2023-2024 academic year were announced during the Annual Biology Senior Picnic and Awards Ceremony on April 25th.

The recipient of the Jerry T. Seng Freshmen Biology Award was Lanae Canen.

The David and Jennifer Pollock Sophomore Biology Award was presented to Abbie Jahn.

Anya Arora and Danielle Monroe received the P. “Louie” Winternheimer Junior Biology Award.

The James A. Brenneman Student Service Award in Biology was presented to Ashley Kitch.

Brad Schulte was honored with the Patricia L. Akrabawi Teaching Assistant Award in Biology.

The Charles and Patricia Robertson Senior Biology Award was presented to Makayla Gomperts.

The Biology Evolvement Award, an award given to a student who has shown exemplary progress, development, and achievement during their academic studies in the biology program, was presented to Lily Waddell.

During the event, the biology department also recognized the outstanding achievements of Dr. Julie Merkle and presented her with the prestigious Descent of Biology Faculty Award.

Denise M. Morse, 70, passed away on April 21, 2024 at her home, surrounded by her family.

The May stretch run begins this weekend for the University of Evansville baseball team, as the Purple Aces will travel north for a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series against long-time rival Valparaiso at Emory G. Bauer Field in Valparaiso, Indiana.  The series begins Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. and all three games of the series can be heard live in the Tri-State area on 107.1 FM-WJPS.

Evansville will bring a 25-19 overall record and 12-6 MVC mark into the month of May.  UE rallied for a pair of two-run home runs in the top of the ninth inning on Tuesday night to pick up a 7-6 come-from-behind victory at Southeast Missouri State to cap a 14-3 month of April.  Overall, Evansville has won 16 out of its last 20 games entering the month of May, and UE sits in second place in the MVC, just two games back of league-leading Indiana State.

Graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger was named the MVC Player of the Week on Monday after a week in which he hit .692 for the Purple Aces.  Shallenberger also hit the first of UE’s two ninth-inning home runs on Tuesday at SEMO, as he will enter this weekend’s series leading the MVC in batting average (.391), on-base percentage (.537) and slugging percentage (.733).  Senior shortstop Simon Scherry has also been swinging a hot bat for UE of late, as he has hit an even .500 (8-for-16) over the last four games, and he will enter this weekend’s series just one hit shy of tying former Purple Ace Robbie Minor (2004-07) for tenth place on UE’s career hit chart with 248 hits.

Valparaiso will enter this weekend’s series at 13-29 overall and 5-13 in the MVC.  The Beacons are currently tied for ninth in the Valley standings, and sit two games back of Missouri State for the eighth and final place in the upcoming MVC Baseball Tournament set for May 21-25 at UE’s Charles H. Braun Stadium.  Outfielder Alex Ryan currently leads Valparaiso offensively with a .295 batting average, while fellow outfielder Kyle Schmack is not far behind at .290, while launching a team-best 14 home runs.  While the Beacons enter the weekend last in the league with a .257 team batting average, Valpo exploded for 20 runs last Sunday in a 20-0 victory at UIC.  Graduate right-hander Bryce Konitzer tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout in the victory to earn MVC Pitcher of the Week honors.

All-time, Valparaiso leads the series over Evansville, 41-27, although the Purple Aces hold a 16-9 series edge since moving to Division I in 1977.  Last year, Evansville won two out of three games over the Beacons at home.  UE has not played at Valparaiso since the 2021 season.

Freshman left-hander Kenton Deverman (6-1, 3.89 ERA) will get the start in Friday’s series opener.  Deverman currently ranks second among NCAA freshmen in victories with six.  He is expected to be opposed by Valparaiso right-hander Kaleb Krier (1-5, 8.10 ERA).

University of Evansville fifth-year golfer Allison Enchelmayer has earned Missouri Valley Conference recognition for her efforts in the classroom.

Enchelmayer garnered MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention accolades on Thursday as the league announced its 2024 Scholar-Athlete Teams.  The Music Education – Vocal major at UE has posted a 3.925 cumulative grade point average.

On the course, Enchelmayer completed the season with a 78.39 stroke average over the course of 23 rounds of action for the Purple Aces.  In the fall, she earned her top finish at The Velvet, tying for 11th.  She carded a season-low 72 in the final round of the Coyote Creek Classic.

Her spring season was highlighted by a tie for 13th at the Indiana State Invitational in April.  Enchelmayer posted rounds of 77-77-78 at the 2024 MVC Championship to finish with a 232, second on the UE squad.

The University of Evansville track and field team will wrap up its regular season on Friday up I-69 in the Billy Hayes Invitational.

The Purple Aces head into their final tune-up before the MVC Outdoor Championships this Friday starting at 11 a.m. Throughout six meets during the outdoor season, UE has set 14 new program records along with dozens of PRs from its young roster. Almost two-thirds of Evansville’s roster during the outdoor season are student-athletes in their first year of collegiate athletics, including standouts Nicole Prauchner (Neuhofen an der Ybbs, Austria), Eilén Brenne (Skein, Norway), Rafael Rodriguez (Segovia, Spain), and Samuel Lea (Worchester, England).

In their final meet of the regular season, the Aces will look to break a few more program records as they did last weekend. At the Rick Erdmann Twilight meet last Saturday, UE set four new program records including Brenne in the 800-meter race and in the 1500-meter race. Brenne set a PR of 2:10.67 in the 800-meter while Prauchner finished the 1500 in 4:30.16. Lea reset his program record in the men's 5000-meter race at 14:58.99 for a seventh-place finish. While Evansville's final program record in Kentucky came in the field from junior thrower Kaitlyn Sansone (Fairfield, Ohio / Mercy McAuley HS). Sansone improved her women's javelin record by over a meter with a throw of 32.36 meters for second place in the event.

It was a standout meet for the Aces as along with four new program records, UE also had 12 separate podium finishes across 21 events. With those podium finishes, Evansville had five athletes take the top spot in three track events and two field events. Freshman sprinter Raymond Felton III (Houston / Clear Brook HS) ran an outdoor season-best 10.74 seconds in the men’s 100-meter dash to take the gold.

The Aces two other first-place finishes on the track came in the men's and women's hurdles. In the women's 100-meter hurdles, sophomore Kate Walke (Batesville, Ind. / Oldenburg Academy) was half a second shy of her program record, finishing the event in 16.07 seconds for the top spot. While freshman Woody Burrell (Cedarburg, Wis. / Cedarburg HS) took first in the men's 400-meter hurdles at 57.60 seconds.

In the field, UE earned first-place finishes in the men's discus and the men's hammer throw events. Graduate throwers Jaden Hayes (Huntingburg, Ind. / Southridge HS) and Zach Dove (Princeton, Ind. / Princeton Community HS) had the best throws of the day in the two events at 48.77 meters in the discus throw for Hayes and 50.87 meters in the hammer throw for Dove.

On Friday, Evansville will begin its day at 11 a.m. with the women’s hammer throw and the men’s javelin throw. The Aces runners will hit the track at 3 p.m. with the women’s 100-meter hurdles preliminary heats.

In its final regular-season series of the season, the University of Evansville softball team travels to Illinois State for a 3-game set.  The series runs Friday through Sunday and ESPN+ will have the coverage of the final two contests.

Last Time Out

- Evansville faced Missouri State in its final home series of the season; after rallying for a 6-5 win in the opener, the Purple Aces fell by scores of 4-3 and 10-4 in the final two games

- Registering five hits in nine at-bats, Brooke Voss was the leading hitter in the series, finishing at .556 while adding three runs and two RBI

- Jenna Nink’s 3-run walk-off home run was the different in the Friday win

Big Hits

- Jenna Nink was responsible for one of the top moments of the season for the Aces as she belted a 3-run walk-off home run in the April 26 win over Missouri State

- With UE trailing by a 5-3 score entering the bottom of the seventh, she picked up the game-winner with two outs to seal the win

- Nink has a hit in 10 of the last 15 games and is batting .262 on the year

- Her first home run of the season was a grand slam in the win over SIU Edwardsville

Still Going Strong

- Over the last 27 games, Brooke Voss has batted .368 while seeing her average rise from .146 to its current mark of .290

- In MVC games, she leads UE in average (.348), hits (23) and doubles (6)

- With six home runs on the year, Voss is tied for the team lead

- Voss was the leading hitter in the series against the Bears, recording five hits in nine at-bats, pacing the team with a .556 batting average

Providing a Spark

- Niki Bode has accounted for two huge hits in her last three appearances

- On April 24 at Indiana State, Bode’s 2-run single in the top of the 7th added much-needed insurance as UE was hanging on to a 1-0 lead at the time

- Two days later, her solo home run in the bottom of the 6th versus Missouri State played a major role in the Aces walk-off win over the Bears

Putting a Streak Together

- Another solid weekend saw Jess Willsey go 4-for-11 against Missouri State

- Since April 20, she is batting .400 with eight hits in 20 at-bats

- She entered the Murray State series on an 0-for-10 skid at the plate but a strong weekend saw her go 5-for-9 while batting .556

- Willsey has recorded a hit in 15 of the last 21 games and is third on the team with a .282 average and 21 RBI

In an effort to honor the achievements of exceptional student-athletes, the Missouri Valley Conference has created the State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award.  Twelve student-athletes have been named by Commissioner Jeff Jackson as the honorees for the 2024 Spring season.

This year’s Spring honorees include Sam Kirkpatrick, Belmont, Baseball; Mara Flaherty, Bradley, Women’s Golf; Savannah Ming, Drake, Women’s Outdoor Track and Field; Brooke McCorkle, Evansville, Softball; Brooke Beyer ,UIC, Women’s Golf; Ali Schrock, Illinois State, Women’s Golf; Jackson Krieg, Indiana State, Men’s Outdoor Track and Field; Kayla Pfitzner, Missouri State, Women’s Golf; Natalie Slezakova, Murray State, Tennis; Griffin Parker, Northern Iowa, Men’s Golf; Alexis Rudd, Southern Illinois, Softball; Kayla Skapyak, Valparaiso, Softball.

In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition.  The Valley will recognize 12 student-athletes three times annually (Fall, Winter, Spring), for a total of 36 honorees.  Institutions select their State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award honorees.

Brooke McCorkle was the Purple Aces’ recipient of the award and is set to graduate from the University of Evansville in May with two degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Accounting.  She has a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and made the Dean’s List on three occasions.

McCorkle has been extremely active in the local community, totaling over 180 hours over the course of the calendar year 2023.  She has been a coach for her local softball team while assisting the UE School of Business Administration.  Other organizations that she has served include Cancer Pathways Center and Ace Cares Ace Race.

The David Ragland Baseball Camps return in 2024 with three different camps set to take place in June.  The camps include a Kids Camp, Team Camp and Elite Camp.

Kids Camp will take place from June 4-7 and runs from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. each day.  It is open to those in grades 3-4 as of the fall of 2024.  Included in the Kids Camp is the opportunity to work with the UE coaching staff, lunch each day, a camp t-shirt, contests & competitions and the chance to meet members of the Purple Aces men’s basketball team.

Cost is $210 per camper and a $25 discount is available for Aces Assist Club members and UE faculty and staff.  A camp store will be available with food and snacks.

Team Camps will be held on June 10 and 11.  Teams can register for either day with the cost set at $300 per team.  There is a $100 discount when registering two teams for the same date in the same transaction and a $200 refund for three teams on the same date in the same transaction.

Daily admission is $5 for adults and $2 for ages 14 and under.  Teams will be responsible for their own lunches and concessions will be available.

On June 15, the Elite Camp will take place starting at 11 a.m. and is for grades 9-12.  Cost is $80 per camper and lunch and concessions will be available.
