The University of Evansville’s 166th Commencement Ceremony will take place tomorrow, Saturday, May 4th to honor the Class of 2024. The ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Ford Center. No tickets are required. For those who cannot attend in-person, the ceremony will also be live streamed at www.evansville.edu/live/. This will also include closed captioning for those in need. Full information is available on the Commencement Central webpage at evansville.edu/Commencement. Seniors should also complete the 2024 Graduation Survey.

Summer Hours

UE will reduce business hours during the summer from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Fridays. This schedule will be in place beginning Monday, May 6, and we will extend these hours for one additional week through Friday, August 9. Regular hours will return Monday, August 12.

Juneteenth

Starting this year, on Wednesday, June 19, all University offices will be closed in honor of Juneteenth. This significant day marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. We urge everyone to utilize this time for reflection and contemplation on the journey towards freedom and equality.

July 4 Holiday

The long Holiday weekend will get a little longer. The President’s Council has added one additional day to create a long holiday weekend. In addition to the University observing the July 4 holiday on Thursday, the University will also be closed on Friday, July 5.

The Secret History is the first novel by author Donna Tartt. Set in New England, the campus novel tells the story of a closely knit group of six classics students at Hampden College, a small, elite liberal arts college located in Vermont based up Bennington College where Tartt was a student.

The Secret History is an inverted detective story narrated by one of the six students, Richard Papen, who reflects years later upon a situation that let to the murder of their friend Edmund "Bunny" Corcoran- wherein the events leading up to the murder are revealed sequentially. The novel explores the circumstances and lasting effects of Bunny's death on the academically and socially isolated group of classics students of which he was a part. 

This was a best-selling debut novel. Normally a debut novel only has 10,000 orders but the Secret History had 75,000 orders and they were sold out upon release.

Sessions will start immediately after lunch on May 27, then you'll check in, stay the night, and sessions will continue until about 3pm on May 28 (Eastern Time). Full participation required.

Whether you've coached a ChangeLab before, or have been thinking about doing one, this will be a great chance to unpack the experience a bit. We'll learn from experienced coaches, provide helpful tools, and help you think about this unique approach to experiential learning in your class or department.

Although it is generally intended for those majoring in EXSS, public health, and similar areas, all majors are welcome! The lab portion of the course will be completed via Labster, an exciting virtual lab simulator! FIN 280 – Introduction to Personal Finance

I know the idea of taking a class during summer winter break doesn’t sound too exciting, but this is a great opportunity to take a class that is relevant to everyone and will benefit you all in the future! FIN 280 is an asynchronous online class that will introduce students to the basic concepts of Personal Finance. These concepts should be of great interest to all students, whether you are just beginning your college life or will soon be out in the working-world. The class will be set up so you can work more or less at your own pace. Lectures will be delivered via PowerPoints and videos going over the PPTs will be posted. This will  help you keep up with the class and be aware of exactly what you need to know.

The library is offering to keep students' plants alive over the summer if they cannot take them home. Contact Meg Atwater-Singer at ma35 for more information.

Family, friends and loved ones of the late Dr. Marvin E. Hartig are pleased to announce the application process for the Dr. Marvin E. Hartig Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is dedicated to the loving memory of Dr. Hartig, Dean of Evansville College’s Evening College in 1967, and administrator for the Center for Advanced Study, director of the Evansville chapter of the American Institute of Banking (AIB), and the international student advisor. In 1974, Dr. Hartig was appointed Dean of Academic Services. He retired in 1984 after serving his alma mater for thirty-five years and passed away in 2007.

This scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving sophomore student. Preference will be given to a student working while being enrolled as a full-time student. International students are encouraged to apply.

Eligible students for the 2024-2025 Hartig Memorial Scholarship will be sophomores in the 2024-2025 academic year.

It was the desire of the donor, Margery Florence Kahn, that her scholarship be awarded to "dedicated and conscientious students who exhibit a true passion for their chosen fields of study, and who, in the opinion of the members of the University of Evansville faculty, are likely to bring the same enthusiasm into the performance of their jobs or the practice of the professions which they will pursue following graduation."

All University of Evansville full-time undergraduate students who will be juniors or seniors in the 2024-25 academic year may apply. An essay of about 300 words must accompany the application along with two to five faculty recommendation letters.

The American Theatre Wing announced nominations for the 77th Annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards on Tues., April 30. The hit new Broadway play, STEREOPHONIC, by David Adjmi, garnered a historic 13 Tony Award nominations and became the most Tony-nominated play in Broadway’s history with four University of Evansville Theatre alumni attached. The production, which is nominated for “Best Play” among other awards, includes producing credits for two 2003 classmates, Nick Mills, a lead producer, and UE Assistant Professor Wes Grantom, both of whom became Tony nominees with the announcement. The production also includes Miriam Cortes ’21, Assistant to the Costume Designer, and Benjamin Anderson ’15, an understudy actor for the roles of “Charlie” and “Peter.”

“We’re all very proud of this show. But I certainly wouldn’t imagine that we would make history today as the most Tony-nominated play of all time. The work of this cast and creative team is amazing, and everyone should do their best to see it,” said Grantom.

After a hugely successful Off-Broadway run at Playwrights Horizons, STEREOPHONIC transferred to Broadway’s Golden Theatre on April 19 and recently announced an extension through Aug. 18. The 77th Annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards, airs live from the David H. Koch Theater at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City on Sun., June 16, at 7:00 p.m. CT, on CBS and Paramount+.

The biology awards honoring the outstanding achievements of UE biology students during the 2023-2024 academic year were announced during the Annual Biology Senior Picnic and Awards Ceremony on April 25th.

The recipient of the Jerry T. Seng Freshmen Biology Award was Lanae Canen.

The David and Jennifer Pollock Sophomore Biology Award was presented to Abbie Jahn.

Anya Arora and Danielle Monroe received the P. “Louie” Winternheimer Junior Biology Award.

The James A. Brenneman Student Service Award in Biology was presented to Ashley Kitch.

Brad Schulte was honored with the Patricia L. Akrabawi Teaching Assistant Award in Biology.

The Charles and Patricia Robertson Senior Biology Award was presented to Makayla Gomperts.

The Biology Evolvement Award, an award given to a student who has shown exemplary progress, development, and achievement during their academic studies in the biology program, was presented to Lily Waddell.

During the event, the biology department also recognized the outstanding achievements of Dr. Julie Merkle and presented her with the prestigious Descent of Biology Faculty Award.

Denise M. Morse, 70, passed away on April 21, 2024 at her home, surrounded by her family.

Down to its final out on Tuesday night, the University of Evansville baseball team got two-run home runs from current Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week Mark Shallenberger and graduate first baseman Chase Hug in the top of the ninth inning, and then the Purple Aces were able to hold on for a 7-6 victory over the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks at Capaha Field in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

“What a wild game!” said UE head coach Wes Carroll.  “It started out as a pitcher’s duel, and I thought that Kevin Reed was outstanding.  Then things got crazy late, but our guys never panicked, and Mark Shallenberger and Chase Hug really stepped up and hit big home runs in the ninth to give us the lead.

“In the bottom of the ninth, I really have to credit Max Hansmann for battling.  The play he made at third base defensively was also outstanding, and a huge play to help us hold on.  We still have some things to iron out, but a win is always better than the alternative, and we’ll take it.”

Evansville jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a two-run double by graduate catcher Brendan Hord and an RBI double by junior outfielder Harrison Taubert.  Reed would make the lead stand up through the first six innings, as he shut out the Redhawks on just four hits in a season-high 6.0 innings of work, striking out five.

Reliever Drew Fieger came on in the seventh, and worked a scoreless frame, before things would get crazy in the eighth inning.  SEMO batted around in the eighth inning and scored four runs, without the baseball leaving the infield in the frame.

The Redhawks would take a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning and called on reliever Kyle Miller, who is SEMO’s all-time saves leader.  With one out, junior designated hitter Cal McGinnis roped a single to right field.  Then, with two outs, Shallenberger belted a 0-1 pitch just over the fence down the left-field line for his team-leading 12th home run of the year to give UE a 5-4 lead.  Two batters later, Hug crushed a two-run home run to right field to give UE a 7-4 lead.

Both home runs would be needed in the bottom of the ninth, as SEMO quickly loaded the bases and got a one-out, two-run single to cut UE’s lead to 7-6.  SEMO DH Keoni Coloma then sent a high fly ball down the left-field line where UE’s third baseman, shortstop and left fielder all converged, but the ball bounced in safely.  Shallenberger, UE’s left fielder, quickly fielded and threw a strike to pitcher Max Hansmann, who was covering third base.  The throw was off-line though, and Hansmann had to make a full-extension lunge to his right to catch the ball, just barely keeping his foot on the bag for the force out.  Hansmann (1-1) then struck out the final batter to secure the 7-6 victory for UE.

Shallenberger and Hug both went 2-for-4 with home runs and two RBI to help lead UE.  Taubert also had two hits, and senior shortstop Simon Scherry went 2-for-4 as well to close within just one hit of cracking UE’s career top 10 for hits.

With the victory, Evansville improved to 25-19 overall.  SEMO, meanwhile, dropped to 22-23 with the loss.  The Purple Aces will now travel north to Valparaiso, Indiana to battle the Valparaiso Beacons in a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series this weekend.  The series will begin on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. in a game that can be heard live in the Tri-State area on 107.1 FM-WJPS.

For the second time in the month of April, University of Evansville graduate outfielder Mark Shallenberger has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week after slashing an unbelievable .692/1.308/.800 in four games last week for the Purple Aces.

Shallenberger went 9-for-13 on the week overall with two doubles, two home runs and four RBI.  He had a pair of games in which he reached base in all five trips to the plate, including going 4-for-4 with two home runs in Sunday’s series finale against Missouri State.  Overall, he reached base in 16 of his 20 trips to the plate, and did not go more than two trips to home plate without reaching base.

The monster week helped Shallenberger take over the top spot in the Missouri Valley Conference in batting average (.389), slugging percentage (.720), on-base percentage (.535), and OPS (1.255).  He also ranks in the nation’s top 75 in all three main categories (average, on-base, and slugging), ranking as high as 12th nationally in on-base percentage at .535.  He has reached base safely in 41 of UE’s 43 games this season, and in 57 of his last 59 games overall dating back to last year.

Shallenberger and the Purple Aces will try to wrap up the month of April on a winning note on Tuesday night, as UE will travel southwest to Cape Girardeau, Missouri to battle the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks.  UE knocked off SEMO, 6-5, in extra innings in Evansville on March 13 thanks to a walk-off RBI single by junior outfielder Harrison Taubert in the 10th inning.  Taubert and Shallenberger were a part of a group of five Purple Aces who had multi-hit games that night, as UE pounded out 12 base hits in the win.

UE will bring a 24-19 overall record into Tuesday night’s game.  The Purple Aces are 13-3 in the month of April so far.  Evansville has won 15 of its last 19 games overall.

SEMO will bring a 22-22 overall record into Tuesday’s game after dropping two of three games to Morehead State over the weekend.  Senior infielder Ty Stauss currently leads the Redhawks in batting average at .336 with 12 doubles, a triple and eight home runs.  Senior infielder Ben Palmer and junior outfielder Michael Mugan lead the Redhawks in home runs with 12 and 10, respectively, and both homered against Evansville on March 13, with Mugan going a team-best 4-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI.

Freshman left-hander Kevin Reed (3-1, 8.10 ERA) will get the start on Tuesday night for UE.  SEMO has not yet announced a starter for Tuesday night.  Tuesday’s game can be seen live on ESPN+.
