* CORRECTION: Living Room Conversations

The CDEI is hosting a series of Living Room Conversations for employees. These guided conversations are designed to help us dialogue across difference in order to create a more inclusive campus culture. Most UE students, faculty, and staff who have participated in a Living Room Conversation say they want to participate again, so come give them a try! * Upcoming Road Closure at Walnut and Weinbach

Beginning on or after September 26, the intersection of Walnut and Weinbach will be completely closed as part of the City of Evansville's Refresh project. The closure is expected to last for 30 to 45 days due to potential complications with the water force main connection. Work will not take place on holidays or weekends and the timing could also be impacted by weather.

Construction Work: The construction work will involve a complete rebuild of the intersection. This includes the connection of a new force water main, installation of storm sewers, updating traffic signals, creating ADA-compliant curbs, and constructing a concrete intersection.

Parking Changes: Parking in lot Q will be restricted to the south spaces near the curb along the Townhouses. All middle and north side spaces will be closed off, and orange barrels will be placed to facilitate safe delivery vehicle access to Central Receiving.

Parking Enforcement: We want to emphasize that the restrictions will be strictly enforced. Towing will only occur if a parked car creates a critical safety issue or blocks other vehicles from using the designated route. Our goal is to ensure safety and minimize disruptions during the construction period without unnecessary towing.

Traffic Flow: Signage will be placed at the entrance to the lot, directing traffic to make a right turn into the lot using the north lane. Additionally, signage on Walnut west of Rotherwood will indicate "No Thru Traffic Allowed." A barricade will be placed in the straight eastbound lane at the Rotherwood/Walnut intersection. Delivery vehicles will have a route around the barricade using the left turn lane.

Median Turnaround: Bollards on Walnut between Ridgway and Carson Center will be removed by Facilities to allow a turnaround in the median for delivery vehicles to exit through the westbound lane of Walnut. A stop sign will be placed at the turnaround to control the traffic entering the westbound lane.

Walking Safety Tips: Be predictable and ensure you follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals and plan to walk on sidewalks whenever they are available. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible. Keep alert at all times; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes (and ears) off the road. Whenever possible, cross streets at crosswalks or intersections, where drivers expect pedestrians. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right. If a crosswalk or intersection is not available, locate a well-lit area where you have the best view of traffic. Wait for a gap in traffic that allows enough time to cross safely; continue watching for traffic as you cross. Never assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact with drivers as they approach to make sure you are seen. Be visible at all times by wearing bright clothing during the day and wear reflective materials or use a flashlight at night. Watch for cars entering or exiting driveways or backing up in parking lots. Avoid alcohol and drugs when walking; they impair your abilities and your judgment.

Alternative Parking for Team Buses: Team buses can use Lot H or Lot O during this time.

* Join us to Celebrate 20 Years of Tin City

The Tin City Archaeological Project turns 20 this year.  Join us to celebrate the only on-going campus excavation in the nation.  Students will be offering tours of the trenches in front of Neu Chapel and a variety of hands-on, family-friendly activities for archaeologists of all ages in the SOBA Atrium.  Tin City was a housing complex reserved for married veterans of World War II and the Korean War attending UE on the GI Bill.  Little was written about the complex, the veterans, or their families, so student excavators have been rediscovering a lost chapter in the history of the university.

The celebration will be between 10 am and 1 pm on Saturday, September 23.  At 12:30 we will be cutting a cake and giving away a free, limited-edition Tin City hoodie in the SOBA Atrium.

* Professor Larmann Painting Published in Color Textbook

Art Department faculty, Professor Ralph Larmann’s artwork Suspension Valley was included as an example of “Color as a Means of Expression” in Steven Bleicher’s art text Contemporary Color: Theory and Use Third edition published by Routledge. Larmann’s work was singled out as an example of how heightened color can be used to evoke an emotional response from a viewer. The author writes, “Larmann uses a color palette with strong intense hues to visually illustrate the toxic nature of the polluted environment. As with earlier expressionist movements, color is used for its emotional content with little regard for the natural world.”

Suspension Valley, completed in 2016, is an acrylic painting measuring 40 inches high by 60 inches wide, and has been exhibited at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Science, and the University of Southern Indiana Kenneth P. McCutcheon Art Center/Palmina F. and Stephen S. Pace Galleries.

* Men's soccer comes up short against No. 10 Louisville

The University of Evansville men's soccer team kept one of the top teams in the country scoreless for over 70 minutes in a 2-0 loss on Tuesday night.

Seven different players registered a shot for the Purple Aces in a tough 90-minute battle with No. 10 Louisville Tuesday evening. But two goals in the final 12 minutes from the Cardinals pushed them past UE for Evansville's fourth loss of the season. Midfielder Ola Arntsen was one of three players to record multiple shots and was the only one to put two on goal. Forward Kai Phillip and defender Nacho Diaz-Caneja also recorded two shots with one on goal apiece while winger Nkosi Graham had the best on-goal opportunity for the Aces in the 73rd minute. Goalkeeper Jacob Madden made three saves over 90 minutes for the Aces.

"It was disappointing to lose, especially giving up a goal in the last 15 minutes," said Interim Head Coach following the match. "That's the fourth time we've done that this year, all four losses have happened that way. That was really disappointing but I thought that the amount of effort that our guys put in was incredible. I don't think we could have asked any more from them.

"The things that we spoke about in our game prep, they executed for the most part. I thought we really grew into the game and started creating some pretty good chances. But once we extended ourselves, I think Louisville's quality showed and that happened with the two goals. We're running out of moral victories but I think that we can take some positives from this game. We talked about choosing to fight before the match and with our backs up against the wall, we did that. I'm proud of our guys for how we played tonight, and how we responded to certain things that happened. But we need to learn the lesson and start getting some wins on the board."

It was a slow first half on both sides as the teams traded fouls through the first 25 minutes. Louisville picked up offensively in the 26th minute, taking four shots in 12 minutes. UE had its best opportunity of the half in the final five minutes as midfielder Nate Roberts found himself alone on the left side of the goal during a corner kick. Roberts got a foot on the ball but sent it high over the net. Diaz-Caneja added the last shot of the first half in the final second outside of the penalty box that went wide right.

The Cardinals quickly pressed to start the second half with two shots in under three minutes. But Evansville found its offense right after, responding with a close shot from winger Auden Engen Vik that hit the right side of the net. It became a back-and-forth battle over the next 22 minutes. Graham had an open opportunity for the Aces in the 73rd minute with a header right in front of the goal that forced Louisville's goalkeeper to make a diving save left. But the Cardinals found their opportunity in the 79th minute with a goal from the left side of the penalty box that beat Madden in the upper right corner. Louisville tacked on the final goal of the night on a penalty shot in the final five seconds after Madden took down a player on a breakaway in the box.

Evansville returns to conference action this weekend against new MVC addition Northern Illinois. UE is set to take on the Huskies at Arad McCutchan Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 23. Kick-off against NIU is scheduled for 7 p.m.
