Do you know a middle school or high school student interested in math and science? This summer, the University of Evansville’s College of Engineering and Computer Science will offer three camps to introduce the exciting career possibilities in engineering and computer science.

At OPTIONS for High School Girls (a residential camp held June 10-15), students will stay on UE’s campus in a residence hall, complete hands-on projects, take classes taught by UE professors, and meet local professional women in the engineering and computer science fields. The cost is $500, which includes all accommodations, food, transportation, and other fees.

OPTIONS for Middle School Girls is also a residential camp, runs June 17-21. The cost is $250 all-inclusive. This year, the OPTIONS for Middle School Boys camp will be a day program, running 8 a.m.-4 p.m. June 25-29. The cost is $200 all-inclusive.

The University of Evansville baseball team closes out the regular season this weekend, hosting Illinois State for a three-game series at Braun Stadium. The Aces and Redbirds are currently tied for fourth place in the Missouri Valley Conference standing, both fighting for a top-four seed in next week’s State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Springfield, Mo.

University of Evansville freshman designated player Kayla Fortner has been named to the 2012 NFCA Division I Midwest Region second team as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association today.

The honor marks the third postseason accolade for the freshman, as she was also a member of the All-Missouri Valley Conference second team as a first baseman as well as being named to the College Sports Madness All-MVC first team as an outfielder.

Fortner finished her rookie season leading the Purple Aces in nearly every offensive category, batting .359 and ranking fourth in the Valley as Evansville’s leading hitter. She ended the regular season ranked in the MVC’s Top-10 for on base percentage (.468), hits (55), RBI (34), and doubles (11), total bases (83), slugging percentage (.542), walks (27), hits per game (1.00), doubles per game (0.20) and walks per game (0.49).

The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to one of three 2012 NFCA Division I All-American teams. A total of 263 players representing 129 different institutions comprise this season’s regional teams, including first and second teams for each region.

Just days after earning his second Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week honor of the season, University of Evansville left-hander Kyle Freeland has been named CollegeBaseballInsider.com’s Central Region Player of the Week. In addition, the Aces were named an honorable mention CBI Team of the Week after going 3-1, beating Ohio Valley Conference leader Austin Peay before taking two of three at first-place Missouri State in MVC play.

Freeland, a native of Denver, Colo., out-dueled Baseball America’s top prospect of the MVC and foiled the league’s top conference hitting team, as he tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout with a career-high 11 strikeouts in Evansville’s 1-0 rubber match victory over Missouri State.

Freeland had a no-hitter going into the ninth inning, and limited MSU to just three base runners in the game, facing 29 batters. From the second to the eighth, the southpaw sat down 17 consecutive Bears, and had six perfect sides in his fourth win of the season and second complete game shutout in Valley play.

On the season, Freeland owns a 4-5 record, 4.40 ERA, 58 strikeouts and just 19 walks.

The Aces (30-23, 9-9 MVC) wrap up the regular season this week, welcoming Illinois State to Braun Stadium for a three-game Valley series that begins Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. CT.
