Distinguished Indiana University Historian Padraic Kenney to deliver 2022 Fiddick Lecture on "Why Hopeless Resistance Matters. Lessons from Eastern Europe”

The University of Evansville’s Department of History, Politics, and Social Change is proud to welcome Dr Padraic Kenney for the 20th annual Thomas C. Fiddick Memorial Lecture. The Lecture will be in Eykamp Hall in the Ridgway University Center at UE on Friday November 4 at 7pm. The event is free and open to the public.

In the decades from 1974 to 2014, dozens of opposition movements around the world brought about real political change. But in the more recent past, resistance in Russia, Iran, Hong Kong and elsewhere seems to have had little effect. In this lecture, Professor Padraic Kenney will draw insights from successful revolutionary movements in Eastern Europe, especially in the 1980s, but also more recent social mobilization in Ukraine, to consider what political resistance is and why it can work. At the same time, though, he will consider how conditions have become less conducive to the success of resistance.

Padraic Kenney is a Professor of both History and International Studies at Indiana University, where he teaches courses on global democracy movements and revolutions, communism, and Polish and Eastern European History. He is the author of six books, including Dance in Chains: Political Imprisonment in the Modern World (Oxford, 2017) and A Carnival of Revolution: Central Europe, 1989 (Princeton, 2002). In 2016, he was President of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES). Before coming to Indiana University in 2007, he taught at the University of Colorado. He was educated at Harvard University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Michigan.

UE's College Mentors for Kids chapter needs student volunteers to mentor young children from our local community. Students from all majors have the opportunity to be inspirational role models for elementary-age students, and all UE students enrolled full-time are eligible to apply. Mentoring involves a one-hour weekly commitment on Wednesdays to check in with your little buddy. Junior Achievement of Southwest Indiana sponsored JobSpark for 8th grade students from southwest Indiana and southeast Illinois on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 25 and 26, at the Old National Events Plaza. Over 3,600 students attended and took part in hands-on experiential activities designed to "spark" an interest in a future career path. UE was well represented with faculty, staff, and students from the programs in the School of Education, Schroeder Family School of Business Administration, School of Engineering and Computer Science, Doctor of Physical Therapy, School of Nursing, Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice, School of Health Sciences, and the Music Conservatory. Thanks to all who helped share the UE experience and our purple pride!

Junior Michael Ikejiani finished with one of the lowest rounds in school history as the University of Evansville men’s golf team wrapped up the Alabama A&M Fall Invite on Tuesday at RTJ at Hampton Cove.

Ikejiani recorded a 5-under 67 in Tuesday’s second round.  It was the 4th-lowest score in school history and just nine Purple Aces players have shot a lower round.  His score vaulted him into a tie for 9th place in the tournament and was an 11-stroke improvement from round one.  His score finished at 145.  Playing for the purple team, Ikejiani helped his squad tie the UE orange team with a 2-round score of 593.

The tournament was called after two of the three scheduled rounds were complete.  Play was halted on Monday evening due to darkness while low visibility caused a short delay on Tuesday morning.

Following Ikejiani on the purple team was Daniil Romashkin.  After carding a 74 on Monday, the freshman posted a 73 in the final 18 holes.  His 147 tied him for 12th place.  Next up was Masatoyo Kato.  A nice improvement in the second 18 holes saw him go from a 77 to a 73 on his way to a 150.  Finishing one behind him was Luke Schneider.  The freshman scored an even 72 in the second round to complete the event with a 151.  He tied for 27th.  Rounding out the purple team was Mason Taylor. Lowering his score by five strokes, Taylor registered a 74 in the second 18 holes to finish with a 153.  He tied for 39th.

Evansville’s orange team also scored a 593 to finish in 5th place on the team side.  Leading that group was Nicholas Gushrowski.  He tied Ikejiani for 9th place in the final rundown with a 145.  Following a 74 in the first 18 holes, Gushrowski posted a 71.  Caleb Wassmer tied Gushrowski’s second-round tally of 71.  Coupled with his 78 in the opening round, he scored a 149 to tie for 19th.

Next up was Henry Kiel, who tied for 24th place with a 150.  His scores checked in at 74 and 76.  Rounding out the team were Isaac Rohleder and Carson Parker.  Rohleder tied for 27th with a 151 while Carson Parker tied for the 34th position with a 152.  Individual Eli Rohleder tied for the 42nd position with a score of 155.  His scores finished at 74 and 81.

Lehigh University took the team and individual victories.  As a team, the Mountain Hawks scored a 557 to best a second-place tie between Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Alabama State and Alabama A&M.  Those three squads finished with a 589.  Jake Roth was the medalist.  Following a 68 to open the tournament, he carded a 65 in round two to finish with a 133.  He was six strokes ahead of his nearest competitor.

In the second and final exhibition game, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team faces Huntington University on Wednesday evening at the Ford Center.  Tip is set for 7 p.m.

Last Time Out              
- UE opened its exhibition slate on Saturday with an 81-56 victory over Oakland City
- Antoine Smith Jr. recorded a game-high 17 points while Marvin Coleman II tallied 12 points and 8 rebounds
- Kenny Strawbridge Jr. and Blaise Beauchamp scored 10 points each while Strawbridge tied Coleman’s team high of 8 boards
- After starting the game 1-for-7 from the field, Evansville hit 31 of its final 61 attempts on the way to the win
- Defensively, the Purple Aces forced 19 turnovers while holding the Mighty Oaks to 34.6% shooting

Setting the Scene
- Saturday’s exhibition opener saw UE work out numerous rotations and lineups throughout the contest
- Wednesday’s contest will see the Aces utilize a similar approach as they prepare for the November 7 regular season opener
- UE welcomed a total of 3,461 fans in the first exhibition game; that would have been the third-highest attendance last season for a UE home game

Scouting the Opponent
- Huntington University posted a 23-11 record last season while going 10-8 in Crossroads play
- Members of the NAIA, the Foresters won their opening game of the 2022 National Tournament in March

Efficient Opener
- Hitting six of his seven attempts, Antoine Smith Jr. led the Aces with 17 points in the victory over Oakland City
- He was a perfect 4-for-4 form outside and added three rebounds

Immediate Impact
- Marvin Coleman II and Kenny Strawbridge Jr. were both in the starting lineup against Oakland City and made their presence known in a big way
- The duo combined for 22 points and 16 rebounds with Coleman posting 12 points and 8 boards and Strawbridge totaling 10 points and 8 caroms
- The Division I experience that both bring to the squad will be shown all season as they each played over 26 minutes

Depth at Forward
- Yacine Toumi and Sekou Kalle each made the start versus the Mighty Oaks and showed signs of what they are capable of
- Kalle knocked down four of his six attempts on his way to eight points while Toumi scored three points and had two steals...both had six rebounds

Wrapping-up the regular season, the University of Evansville men's soccer team welcomes Belmont to Arad McCutchan Stadium at 6 PM on Wednesday night in Evansville.

Wednesday regular-season finale represents the 15th meeting all-time between the Aces and Bruins with Evansville owning a 10-3-1 advantage in the all-time series. The two sides played to a scoreless draw in their meeting earlier this season on Oct. 5 in Nashville. Belmont enters the finale with a 6-3-6 record and has earned three-straight results, most recently capturing a 2-0 win over EIU on Nov. 2.

Much is still on the line in the Missouri Valley Conference heading into the final day of competition. Evansville could finish as high as second or as low as fifth, while Belmont could finish as high as third and as low as fifth. Missouri State has locked-in the top seed in the championship, while SIUE and Bradley are locked in the six and seven seeds, respectively.

Evansville enters the final match of the regular season ranked inside the top 50 in the nation in three statistical categories. The Aces are 15th in shot accuracy, 35th in save percentage, and 39th in shutout percentage. Individually, freshman Nacho Diaz is 18th in total goals, 22nd in goals per game and shot accuracy, 29th in shots on goal per game, 34th in total points, and 40th in points per game, while graduate goalkeeper Alex Vidizzoni is ranked 21st in save percentage, 38th in shutouts, and 91st in total saves.
