What's Happening Today

* Apply Now - March 19 Is Deadline to Apply for Senior Keynote Commencement Speaker

Seniors with something to say to your class: Monday, March 19, is the deadline to apply to deliver the commencement address.  A brief online application must be completed with a written draft of 1000 – 1500 words. Go to www.evansville.edu/commencement/seniorkeynote.cfm for more details and to access the application form. A limited number of finalist will be asked to perform their speeches before the selection committee on April 2 or 3. The final selection for the Senior Keynote Commencement speaker will be announced at the leadership awards program on Thursday, April 19. 

 
* Graduation Announcement Pickup

Those May graduates who have placed their graduation announcement orders by the date of March 8 can pick their order up in the UE Bookstore at their earliest convenience. These are for customers who chose pick up in store for their option. Those having their orders shipped should receive their orders viva UPS by March 16. Anyone still needing graduation announcements should stop in the Bookstore as soon as possible.
 

 
* Hoedown for Hoofprints - Contestants Needed!

On Sunday, March 25, in Eykamp Hall, Ridgway University Center, Delta Sigma Pi will host "Hoedown for Hoofprints." This is a philanthropy event that benefits Hoofprints in the Sand, a therapeutic riding center. Admission will be $3 and is open to all of UE and the public. The event is a co-ed competition with four fun rounds, open to all student organizations for registration. There will be a speedy dress-up round, a nerf-gun quickdraw,  lasso competition, and a judged question round. Any organization may register male or female contestants for a registration fee of $35 for the first contestant, or $50 for two. Please sign up soon, because the registration deadline is March 16. * Sign Ups for Delta Omega Zeta's Break the Floor All-Male Dance Contest

Are you a guy who likes to dance? Or do you know guys who like to dance? If so, then come participate in Delta Omega Zeta’s BREAK THE FLOOR, an all male dance competition benefiting YouthFirst. This year’s theme is ‘70s Motown! Teams from 3 to 7 guys are allowed, and entries are due March 14! One team is $25 to enter and two teams are $50 to enter. * Sign Up for UE Gives Back

UE Gives Back will be held Saturday, March 31 from 10 am-12 pm. All students, faculty and staff are welcomed to participate. The sign-up sheet for an individual or group is available at cse.evansville.edu/service. The deadline to sign up is March 16.

This year, we will coordinating a neighborhood cleanup around the University as part of Clean-up Evansville as well as sending volunteers to other community locations.

* AcesTV Free Live Streaming

On Thursday, March 15 at 3:00 pm AcesTV will have another FREE stream! The softball team will be playing a double header against Southeast Missouri State. Not only that, but the baseball game that following Saturday at 2:00 pm will be FREE as well! On Saturday the boys will play against Western Michigan. * This Week in Music - A Weekend of Concerts and Recitals

The Bend in the River Brass Band, a traditional-style British brass ensemble, will present its Spring Concert this Saturday, March 17, at 7:00 p.m. Also on Saturday, soprano Jessica Hoyer and flutist Elizabeth Stone will present a joint Senior Recital at 2:30 p.m, which will be followed by soprano Caroline Buckman’s Senior Recital at 4:00 p.m. On Sunday, trumpeter Dalton Bailey and trombonist Christina Lu’uloa will present their joint Senior Recital at 1:00 p.m., and Professor Emeritus Douglas Reed will present a recital of organ and harpsichord music at 4:00 p.m.  All events are in Wheeler Concert Hall and are free and open to the public.

 

 
* Social Justice—Why Should I Get Involved?

Ace Advocates, a new organization on campus, will be hosting a social justice rally on March 15 in Eykamp 252,Ridgway University, starting at 5:30 pm.

Group member Whitney Lantz explains that “the purpose of Ace Advocates is to educate students on the campus of the University of Evansville about the topics of social justice and charity. It exists to form an arsenal of advocates that work for social justice, through organizations like Congregations Advocating for Justice and Empowerment (CAJE), and charity in and throughout the City of Evansville.”

At the rally, the group will discuss topics in social justice, and announce two social justice events planned for the near future that anyone can get involved in. There will be snacks and good discussion about topics that matter! Invite your friends, and come learn why you should get involved on campus and in your community!

* Personal Finance Discussion for Students

All UE students are invited to attend a personal finance discussion specifically for college students, on Wednesday, March 14 at 9:00 p.m. in Eykamp 255. Leading the discussion will be Bob Boxell from Centennial Wealth. He will discuss student loans, FICO scores, the best ways for young adults to save and invest, which insurance products to consider, and which to avoid. No registration is necessary.

 
* Secret Noh Plays to be Topic of Next Andiron Lecture

The next University of Evansville Andiron Lecture begins at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, in Eykamp252, Ridgway University Center. A social gathering with beverages begins at 3:45 p.m.

The speaker will be Fusae Ekida, assistant profesor of Japanese and director of the Japanese Studies Program in the Department of Foreign Languages. Her topic will be "Secret Noh Plays:History and Tradition."

Ekida earned a PhD at the University of Washington. She has a wide range of research interests, from historical linguistics to Japanese classical literature. She is coauthor of “Historical Development of the Accusative Case Marking in Japanese as Seen in Classical Literary Texts,” published in the Journal of Japanese Linguistics.

Noh plays, a popular form of Japanese entertainment originating in the thirteenth century, are today revered as theatrical art. Ekida’s presentation will provide the history and tradition of the Noh plays in addition to the secret plays, which are some of the most highly ranked plays in the modern Noh repertoire.

The ARTstor Digital Library is a non-profit online digital image library designed to serve educational and scholarly communities with more than one million images on subjects in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. ARTstor provides tools and software to search, present, and share digital images both online and offline for research and teaching.  Collections in the Digital Library are continually expanded and updated by collaborating with scholars, museums, photographers, stock photography agencies, and photographic archives in libraries.

* Harper Elementary Earn A Bike Program

Harper Elementary, which is located just 2 minutes from UE, is looking for volunteers to assist with their new program!
Earn-A-Bike is an afterschool program that pairs their students with a bike mechanic to learn how to repair a bicycle that their students may keep after the conclusion of the program. NO BIKE REPAIR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. This is a 6-week program that will run Thursdays from 2:15 pm-4 pm beginning April 5 and running until May 10. Notice that the end date is after the end of the semester. Harper School is looking for 2-3 volunteers. Please respond to csi@evansville.edu by MARCH 26 if interested.
 

 

 
* Last Day to Drop Spring Classes – Friday, March 30

Don’t forget that Friday, March 30, is the last day to drop a spring class.  Drops will be posted with a ‘W’ grade.  If you need to drop a class, fill out a yellow Add/Drop Form (available in the Registrar’s Office in Olmsted Hall room 106), get signatures from your advisor and class instructor, visit the Office of Financial Aid, and return the completed form to the Registrar’s Office no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, March 30.


 

 
* Making a Writing Center Appointment this Week

This is a reminder that, even though the Writing Center's online calendar inaccessible and walk-in sessions are unavailable for this week, you may still make an appointment to visit with a tutor. Just e-mail Linda Bathon in Academic Advising at lb24@evansville.edu at least 24 hours in advance of the session you wish. The center will resume "business-as-usual" with online-appointment and walk-in sessions available beginning at 7 p.m., Sunday, March 18.

* Klara Nichter, Miranda Stinson and Natalie Updike

Students Klara Nichter , Miranda Stinson, and Natalie Updike presented their creative and scholarly work at the Sigma Tau Delta conference in New Orleans on March 1 and 2. Stinson shared the third-place award in the Original Poetry category for her “Six Poems on Youth and Age”. Updike’s paper, “Torture, Testing, and Teaching: The Awakening of Sympathies in Black Beauty and The Island of Dr. Moreau” was delivered in a panel focusing on British Literature. Nichter’s paper was entitled “Gogol’s Inferno,” about the 19th-century Russian writer, Nikolai Gogol. Sigma Tau Delta, the English honors society, is an international organization that, among other aims, celebrates the achievements of undergraduate writers and literary scholars. 

 
* Miranda Stinson

Department of Creative Writing major Miranda Stinson placed third in Sigma Tau Delta's 2012 international poetry competition. Miranda traveled to New Orleans over spring break to participate in Sigma Tau Delta's national convention, where she attended panels and workshops and presented her own original work.  Sigma Tau Delta is the international English and creative writing honor society. A member of the Association of College Honor Societies, it has over 800 active chapters located in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and the Caribbean, and there are more than 1,000 Faculty Sponsors, and approximately 9,000 members inducted annually.

Sigma Tau Delta's central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature.
 

 
* Dr. Kazee and Professors Paul Bone and Margaret McMullan

Along with UE President Tom Kazee, Department of Creative Writing faculty Paul Bone, Rob Griffith, and Margaret McMullan traveled to Indianapolis on February 27 and 28 to address representatives from North Central Indiana Private Schools at Breubeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.  There, they announced the launch of the Harlaxton Summer Writing Program for High School Juniors and Seniors in 2013, where talented student writers will enjoy personal conferences with notable British and American writers, discussions with editors and authors about publishing, and excursions into the countryside and urban centers of England to explore this nation's rich architecture and literary history.  For more information about the summer program visit http://hswp.evansville.edu/

* Aces Baseball Breaks Midweek For Two OVC Opponents

The University of Evansville baseball team will take on a pair Ohio Valley Conference opponents this week, welcoming UT Martin to Braun Stadium Tuesday. UE will then travel to Austin Peay Wednesday to face the Governors. Due to the UE men’s basketball CBI Tournament game in the evening, Tuesday’s contest versus the Skyhawks has been moved up to a 4:00 p.m. start time. 

 
* Fortner Tabbed MVC Player of the Week

University of Evansville freshman outfielder Kayla Fortner has been named this week’s Missouri Valley Player of the Week, as announced by the league office yesterday.

Fortner led the Aces’ offense this week, hitting .593 with 16 hits over the Aces’ eight games this week. Fortner ended the week with four doubles, a triple and two home runs, hitting her first collegiate homer on March 6 against UTEP.

The Cedar Hill, Mo., native went 3-for-4 in consecutive games against UTEP and Louisiana-Tech and ended 2-for-3 against No. 19 Auburn. Over the Aces’ eight-game road trip, Fortner owned an on-base percentage of .645 as well as a 1.037 slugging percentage, picking up a team-high 16 RBI while scoring seven runs on the week.

With at least one hit in every game this season, Fortner is currently on a 14-game hitting streak with eight multi-hit games. The freshman currently leads the MVC in batting average (.533), slugging percentage (.822), and on base percentage (.596) while ranking second in total bases (37), third in RBI (19) and fourth in hits (24).

 
* Aces Golf Completes Round One Of Benbow Invitational

The University of Evansville men’s and women’s golf team wrapped up the first round of the Benbow Invitational at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Club.

Michael Sainz stands in a 5-way tie atop the leaderboard on the men’s side, shooting an even 71 in the first round.  His 32 through the opening nine holes was the top score before he wrapped up the bottom nine with a 39. 

The men stand in third place entering play on Tuesday with a score of 296.  Sam Houston State leads the way with a 289 followed by IUPUI with a 291.  Griffin Wood is currently in a tie for tenth place, two strokes off the lead with a 73.

On the women’s side, Sydney Skiles stands in a tie for 15th place with an 8-over score of 80 in the first round.  Skiles is seven shots off of the lead, which is heled by Shelby Hardy of Sam Houston State.

Sam Houston State also holds the lead on the women’s side with a 310 and is followed by IUPUI (315) and Detroit Mercy (324).  Evansville is 12th with a 342.  Both squads will wrap up the event on Tuesday. 

 
* Special Notice To Fans Attending Aces CBI Game

The University of Evansville athletic department has released special information for fans who will be attending Tuesday’s CBI game against Princeton at the Ford Center.

Tip is set for 7 p.m. while the doors to the Ford Center will open at 6 p.m.  Fans are asked to arrive early! 

Since Tuesday’s game is not a regular season game, there will be no reserved parking.  Free street parking and spot behind the Centre will be available while handicap spots will be in front of the Civic Center.  Garage parking will also be available for $5.

Purple Aces Club (PAC) members are reminded that there will not be a hospitality room for tomorrow’s contest.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased several different ways.  You can buy tickets at the Carson Center ticket office or by calling (812) 488-ACES.  The ticket office is open until 7 p.m. Monday while Tuesday’s hours will be from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

You can also buy tickets at www.Ticketmaster.com or at the Ford Center ticket office.  Tickets can be purchased at the Ford Center up until the game.  All seats are only $15.
 

 
* Tuesday's Baseball Game Moved to 4 p.m.; AcesTV Free Streaming Pushed To Saturday

Game time for the University of Evansville baseball team’s contest Tuesday versus UT Martin has been changed to 4:00 p.m. First pitch was originally set for 6:00 p.m., but due to men’s basketball hosting the first round of the CBI Tournament, the Aces will take the field at Braun Stadium two hours earlier.

Video streaming and radio will not be available for the game, but fans will be able to watch Saturday’s contest at 2:00 p.m. against Western Michigan on AcesTV free of charge. Evansville’s softball doubleheader against Southeast Missouri State on Thursday, March 15th, will also be streamed for free, giving fans a preview of what AcesTV offers.

To access the live streams, fans should visit the following website address:  www.gopurpleaces.com/showcase. Once there, fans will see the games listed on the left-hand side of the screen, with a small "Free" button on the tabs. If fans click the tab, they should receive instant access to the stream.

PLEASE NOTE:  To receive a clear stream on-line, a solid internet connection is needed. Saturday's stream will be offered at 796 kbps. In order to receive the stream free of buffering or interruption, it is recommended to view the stream on an internet connection with at least 1.5 mbps download speed available. The stream can be viewed with speeds less than 1.5 mbps, but stuttering may occur, especially when download speeds approach the stream's speed of 796 kbps.  To check the download speed available on your internet, please visit www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and select the "host city" closest to your location.
 

 
* Reminder To Aces Season Ticket Holders

Season ticket holders for the University of Evansville men’s basketball team are reminded of the upcoming deadlines for the Aces’ postseason game on Tuesday.

The deadline for season ticket holders to purchase their seats from the season is Sunday at 5 p.m.  After that deadline, all tickets will be released for sale to the general public.  Season ticket holders can purchase their tickets only through the UE ticket office in the Carson Center or by calling 812-488-ACES.

All tickets are $15 and all seats not utilized by season ticket holders are on sale now through Tuesday at the Carson Center or by calling 812-488-ACES.

Tickets will also go on sale at the Ford Center and through Ticketmaster.com beginning at 10 a.m. Monday.

Fans who purchase their tickets from now through Sunday can begin to pick them up at the Carson Center beginning on Monday at 9 a.m.  Tickets will not be available before that time.

The ticket office at the Carson Center will have special hours until gameday.  It will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. and will have hours on Monday from 9 a.m. through 7 p.m.

Information regarding the tournament along with the opponent will be released as soon as it becomes available, presumably either late Sunday evening or early Monday morning.  The game is set for Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Ford Center.
