* 1932 LinC - Through the Year

From the 1932 LinC:

Through the Year

January
As first must come the inevitable resolutions as soon as the whistles have been silenced - Harvey Seifert decided that as soon as the LinCs are out, he would make a bonfire out of them and throw himself in the middle of it all, just for effect - The Shakespeare class soiree in Van Keuren's a huge success - Plans are made to repair the driveway - well, the plans were made at any rate - Finals overwhelm us - and the month draws to an end.

February
The registration for the second term starts - several new visages - The most exciting basketball game of the season with McKendree - Rushing commences on the 8th and the Freshies surely keep on the hop - Finally with the formal pledge dinners, comes relaxation once more.

March
When the inevitable lion ushers in this blustery month the Philos send their much blushing pledges around to propose to the giggling girls of the women's sororities - Professor Cope keeps up the spirit of believers in the idea of absent minded profs and leaves his car downtown while he rides home on the street car - Congratulations to the Sigs on this, their diamond anniversary - Special chapel in the morning and customary banquet for basketball heroes in the evening - Phi Zetas hold annual initiation of new pledges on Main Street - the main drag thoroughly scrubbed with toothbrushes - The LinC Office becomes riotous as the deadline approaches.

Athletics

* UE Men's Swimming In 7th Place After Day One Of MAC Championships

The University of Evansville men’s swimming and diving team finished the first day of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships ranked seventh with 26 points as a team. Ball State ranks above the Aces, earning sixth place with 72 points while Eastern Michigan leads all seven teams with 236 total points.

In today’s final heats, the 200-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Will Spradley, Alex Seward, Jake Harrington and Kyle Tiemann placed sixth with a final time of 1:23.79.

Despite no individual swimmers making it into the final heats for UE, several Aces swam well during today’s preliminary rounds.

Tiemamn just barely missed a Top-18 finish in the 50-yard prelims, touching in at 21.02, just .01 second behind the 18th place time. Spradley was closely behind, finishing the 50- in 21.46 to take 23rd place.

Harrington finished in 22nd place in the 500-free with a time of 4:45.78. Freshman Garrett Johnson swam the event in 4:47.47 to finish 24th.

Sophomore Justin Shotwell had the Aces’ best time in the 200-yard individual medley, touching in at 1:56.60 to finish in 27th place.

The Aces will return to the pool tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for preliminary heats in the 400 IM, 100-butterfly, 200-free, 100-breaststroke, 100-backstroke and three-meter diving. The finals are set to begin at 7:00 p.m. tonight.

* Lady Aces Edged By Illinois State, 62-59

After trailing for nearly the entire game, junior Meagan Collins’ post move on the low block gave the hosting University of Evansville women’s basketball team the lead, 59-58, with 1:36 to go in the contest. However, Illinois State answered with a layup, stopped UE on the defensive end with a block, and made both free throws when the Aces were forced to foul , edging UE, 62-59, Thursday night at the Ford Center.

The loss drops Evansville’s overall record to 5-23 on the season  and 2-15 in the MVC, while the Redbirds improved to 17-11 on the year, 12-5 in the Valley, and held onto their second-place position in the MVC standings.

Making her first start of the season, freshman Juliann Miller had a career game with 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior Samantha Heck also logged 14 points, along with nine boards, while classmate Meagan Collins reached double figures with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Senior Staci Gillum, who will be honored on Senior Day Saturday, recorded a career-high nine assists, also adding seven points. Junior Taylor Ware contributed seven points and five boards in the nail biter.

After the Redbirds took the initial advantage, Evansville briefly stole the lead at the 15:54 mark when Heck knocked down a three to make the score 7-6. However, Illinois State took it back and built as much as a 13 point lead, 25-12, with 6:31 remaining in the first half.

Ware’s layup with 1:02 left in the stanza cut the deficit to nine, 29-20, at the break.

Evansville immediately cut into the Redbirds’ lead at the start of the second half, scoring the first six points, and made it a two-point game, 33-31, on Gillum’s three with 15:40 to go in the game.

Illinois State pulled away again, stretching the margin to eight, 45-37, but UE continued to fight on their home court. The Aces used a 7-0 run to get within one, 49-48, following Miller’s two free throws with 6:27 remaining.

The squads traded baskets, until the Aces were finally able to string two together to take the lead. Heck knocked down a jumper in the middle of the paint, and after UE forced a turnover on the other end, the junior center fed a bounce pass from the high wing to Collins on the left low block. Collins finished the post move, but Illinois State’s Jamie Russell answered immediately with a jumper on the other end to regain the advantage for the Redbirds.

Candace Sykes made a block and Russell hit two free throws to make it a three-point game with 12.1 seconds left. UE’s final attempt on the offensive end didn’t go.

Russell led the Redbirds with 20 points, while Sykes added 10 points.

The Aces won the battle of the boards, 42-39, and held a slight edge in shooting percentage, as UE shot 38.7 percent (24-62) from the field, 20.0 percent (4-20) from three, and 63.6 percent (7-11) from the line. From the floor, the Redbirds shot 38.5 percent (25-65), 17.6 percent (3-17) from three, and 75.0 percent (9-12) from the charity stripe.

The Aces close out the regular season Saturday afternoon when they host in-state rival Indiana State on Senior Day. Guards Staci Gillum and Jordan Lewis will be honored in a pregame ceremony set to begin 40 minutes prior to the 1:00 p.m. tipoff time.
