Change in Location for Think Outside the Lunch Box
|
|
Today's Think Outside the Lunch Box has been moved to the auditorium on the fourth floor at Old National Bank (One Main Street in Evansville, Indiana) Usually the lecture is in the Blue and Gold Room at Old National Bank.
Associate Professor of Management Information Systems Peter Rosen will be discussing ""Building Your Personal Brand Through Social Media."
What can people learn about you from the information and photos you share on a social networking website? How can you use this global phenomenon to positively influence your reputation?
Rosen's recent research on social networking has attracted national attention from media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, and Fox News.
"In my presentation, I'll discuss how you can use social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to create a brand for yourself - showing the world where your expertise and passions lie," said Rosen. "I'll share real-life examples of people who have successfully done this, and I will also pull from my recent research on Facebook as a powerful predictor of job performance and academic success."
With colleagues at Northern Illinois University and Auburn University, Rosen recently co-authored a study titled "Social networking websites, personality ratings, and the organizational context: More than meets the eye?," which was published in the February 2012 issue of the Journal of Applied Social Psychology.
This is the second year of UE's monthly faculty lecture series. It is normally held the first Thursday of every month.
Attendees are welcome to eat lunch during the presentation. There is a restaurant conveniently located in the Old National Bank lobby.

Announcing the Public Health Major at UE
|
|
From more than 80 areas of study, University of Evansville students now have a new major to choose: Public Health. UE’s Board of Trustees approved the public health program, which will begin in Fall 2012, during its meeting on February 17-18.
UE’s Bachelor of Science in public health will train students in multidisciplinary approaches to public health practices. Students will learn about a range of issues that impact population health, global health, environmental health, disease prevention, health communication and informatics, healthcare systems, and health behavior.
Payal Patel-Dovlatabadi, assistant professor of public health, will serve as director of the public health program. She joined the University of Evansville faculty in 2011 to teach public health courses in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, where the public health program will be housed.
Patel-Dovlatabadi holds a DrPH in public health management, an MPH in health care organization and policy, an MBA in health care management, and a BS in psychology, all from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her research interests include health policy, lifestyle factors and chronic disease prevention, mental health, and disaster preparedness on both the national and international levels.
“From disaster relief to air quality to disease prevention, public health professionals ensure a healthy, safe, and productive society,” said Patel-Dovlatabadi. “Furthermore, the Association of Schools of Public Health estimates that 250,000 more public health workers will be needed by 2020. To replenish the workforce and avert a serious shortage of qualified workers, schools of public health will have to train three times the current number of graduates over the next 11 years.”
“I’m proud that the University of Evansville has recognized this critical need and stepped up to meet the challenge of preparing graduates for careers in the dynamic field of public health,” she added.
Graduates with a B.S. in Public Health who wish to enter the job market will find opportunities for employment by state and local health departments, hospital systems, government agencies, health insurance companies, wellness centers, and consulting firms, to name a few.
The program will also prepare students who wish to pursue graduate education. Students across the country who completed an undergraduate degree in public health have successfully pursued advanced degrees in fields including public health, health services administration, physical therapy, law, medicine, and business administration.
For more information on the public health program, please contact program director Payal Patel-Dovlatabadi at 812-488-2210 or visit http://www.evansville.edu/areasofstudy/publichealth.

Seven Aces Named to MVC Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete Team
|
|
Seven members of the University of Evansville women’s swimming and diving team have been named to the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete Team, as announced by the league office.
Swimmers Melissa Ball, Jill Enge, Phoebe Hodina, Alex Howard, Valerie Jones and Melissa Thurman along with diver Sadie Wells represented Evansville on the forty-two member team.
Scholar-Athlete honors require athletes to have completed at least one year and maintain either a 3.2 GPA and obtain all-conference honors, achieve a 3.5 GPA and finish top sixteen in an individual event at the conference championships, or maintain a 3.8 GPA and participate in the MVC championship.
Forty-two student-athletes qualified for the Valley 2012 Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete team, with two student-athletes averaging a perfect 4.0 GPA and fourteen student-athletes above an impressive 3.8 GPA. The 2012 Swimming and Diving Conference Champions from Missouri State claim the most spots on the scholar-athlete team with eleven, followed by Illinois State with nine representatives.

Baseball Continues Non-Conference Schedule Today
|
|
University of Evansville baseball continues its non-conference road schedule Wednesday, taking on the University of Tennessee Martin Skyhawks. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. at Skyhawk Field.
Evansville leads the series 8-2, sweeping the Skyhawks, 2-0, in a home-and-home series last season. UE won 16-3 on March 1, 2011 in Martin, Tenn. and 18-6 on March 23, 2011 at Charles Braun Stadium. UE will see the Skyhawks again later this season, hosting UTM March 13th.
The Aces enter Wednesday with a 2-4 record with all four losses being decided by two or less runs. UE comes off a 1-3 weekend at Arkansas State with right-handed pitcher Kyle Lloyd picking up his second win of the year in Saturday’s, 5-1, nightcap victory. Offensively, four UE players are hitting over .300, including Jason Hockemeyer (.385), Eric Stamets (.333), Tim Bodine (.333) and Andy Lasher (.313). As a team, UE is batting .234, while the pitching staff boasts a 2.34 ERA.
Evansville has its home-opener this week, hosting the Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic at Charles Braun Stadium, Friday through Sunday. IPFW and Eastern Illinois will be the other teams in attendance. UE will open the tournament vs. IPFW Friday at 11:00 a.m. CT.
In 50 innings of work, Evansville’s experienced pitching staff has recorded a miniscule 2.34 earned run average. All 10 hurlers who have made at least one appearance boast a 4.50 ERA or lower. Kyle Lloyd (2-0, 8.2 IP), Josh Biggs (2.0 IP), Ryan Billo (1.1 IP) and Peter Spear (1.0) all have yet to give up an earned run.
Playing his first games in an Aces uniform last weekend, junior transfer Jason Hockemeyer started all four games at first base in UE’s four-game series at Arkansas State. He recorded a perfect fielding percentage, logging a team-high 38 putouts and four assists. Hockemeyer also led UE offensively with a .385 batting average (5-for-13) and .615 slugging percentage. In UE’s first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Hockemeyer lined a leadoff double in the sixth and scored in the frame to temporarily give UE the lead. In the 5-1 nightcap victory over the Red Wolves, Hockemeyer belted a two-out RBI triple to cap UE’s four-run first inning.
Junior Kyle Lloyd earned his second win of the season in as many outings, as the Aces topped Arkansas State, 5-1, Saturday evening. Lloyd started and tossed six scoreless innings, allowing six hits, just one walk, while striking out three. Lloyd (2-0, 0.00 ERA) has yet to allow a run this season.
Evansville has scored first in 4-of-6 games this season, with 41.2 percent (7-of-17 run) of their offensive output occurring in the first inning. The Aces are 1-3 when they start with the lead and 1-1 when the opposition crosses the plate first.
In 198 total games, UE has been shut out just two times, including the Aces’ 2-0 season-opening loss at Belmont (2/17). Getting shut out just once last season – a 4-0 loss vs. Creighton (5/14/11) – Evansville scored at least one run in every game in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Right-handed pitchers Sam Johns (0-0, 4.00 ERA) and Zach Taylor (0-1, 4.50 ERA) are back in commission this season after both suffering season-ending injuries in the first inning of UE’s first two games in 2011. After getting elbow surgery last spring, Johns made his return to the mound vs. Lipscomb, hurling 5.0 innings and got the no-decision. Taylor took a line drive to the ear in his first start last year (at Memphis 2/19). In his first appearance since the incident, Taylor came out of the bullpen in UE’s second game at Arkansas State and took the loss, throwing four innings, allowing two runs, two hits, three walks, while striking out two.
Evansville returns 12-of-13 pitchers from last season and also adds three newcomers to the staff, including Kyle Freeland, a 35th round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
For the second consecutive year, shortstop Eric Stamets was named to the Missouri Valley Conference preseason all-conference team, voted on by the league’s eight head coaches. Stamets, a junior from Dublin, Ohio, projects to be one of the best shortstops in the nation this year. Last season, Stamets hit .292 with a team-high 51 runs scored and 27 stolen bases. Defensively, he led the Aces with 181 assists and helped the squad to a program-best .977 fielding percentage with a record-low 48 errors as a team. In addition, Stamets turned heads in the summer, playing for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks and was named a Cape Cod League All-Star. Stamets was a consensus Freshman All-American and the MVC Freshman of the Year in 2010.

Cox Earns MVC Sixth Man Of The Year Award
|
|
University of Evansville junior guard Ned Cox was named the Missouri Valley Conference Sixth Man of the Year on Tuesday afternoon.
Cox played in all 29 games for Evansville this year while making two starts. He averaged 9.3 points per game.
“Ned is a very giving player for us, for three years he has been a role player off of the bench for us and he has been very gracious in accepting that,” head coach Marty Simmons said. “It is such a luxury to have a sixth player with his abilities coming off the bench for us.”
After averaging 7.3 PPG a season ago, Cox saw his average rise by two points. He has ten double-digit scoring efforts, led by a pair of 20-point outings. In a November contest at Illinois Chicago, he set his career mark with 24 points as he hit 9-of-13 shots.
He followed that up with a 22-point performance at Indiana State where he was a perfect 4-4 from long range. Cox made two starts for the Aces, scoring 16 points against Oakland City before leading Evansville with 17 points in a start in the regular season finale against Missouri State.
Cox is the second player from Evansville to be named Sixth Man of the Year. Curt Begle picked up the honor in 1999.

UE Men's Basketball Players Recognized by MVC
|
|
Four University of Evansville men’s basketball players were recognized by the Missouri Valley Conference on Tuesday after leading the Aces to a third place finish in regular season.
Junior Colt Ryan, senior Denver Holmes, freshman Ryan Sawvell and junior Troy Taylor received league recognition for their efforts in leading UE to its second-best seeding since entering the MVC in 1994. The only seeding higher than this season came in 1999 when UE won the regular season championship.
“I am very proud of these guys, they did a great job of staying together all year,” head coach Marty Simmons said. “We had some tough losses and were able to bounce back every time. They had a certain togetherness that everyone, especially younger players, can learn from.”
After being named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team last season, Colt Ryan was named a first-team player this year. The guard from Batesville, Ind. led UE and was second in the MVC, averaging 20.5 points per game while tying for the league lead in steals, swiping two a game. The three-time MVC Player of the Week scored a career-high 43 points last week against Creighton before tallying 12 in Saturday’s win over Missouri State. He is the sixth player to notch first-team All-MVC honors since UE entered the league in 1994.
Denver Holmes was named as an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection. Holmes, who hails from Olathe, Kan., came up large for the Aces on several occasions this year, most recently in Saturday’s win over the Bears. Holmes knocked down a three-pointer with one tick remaining to send the game to overtime before Evansville picked up the 75-70 victory. His shot was the difference between UE finishing third and eighth in the league.
Those were not the only heroics for UE’s second-leading scorer. Against Northern Iowa on Feb. 15, he was at it again, connecting on a pair of treys in the final 19 seconds to give the Aces the season sweep over the Panthers.
“Both Colt and Denver are very deserving of their honors; Colt has done everything we have asked for three years, he is a leader on the court and is committed to helping the team win,” Simmons said. “Denver is a true team player. He is the hardest worker that we have and has excelled as a senior this season.”
Making the All-Freshman Team was Ryan Sawvell. The true freshman from Mundelein, Ill. evolved in his inaugural campaign at UE after missing several games in November with mono. He got better as the season went on, scoring 10 or more points in a span of seven out of 11 contests in January and February.
Sawvell’s top scoring output came against Drake where he knocked down seven shots to score 14 points. In UE’s win at Bradley, Sawvell hauled in 16 rebounds, the most a UE player has had this season. He has been an extremely accurate shooter, hitting 62.2% of his attempts, a tally that would be sixth in the nation with enough attempts. Sawvell is the tenth UE player to be named an All-Freshman player.
One of the pleasant surprises for Evansville this season was junior Troy Taylor. The point guard, and the leading rebounder for UE, was named to the All-Defensive Team. Taylor leads the Aces with 4.8 rebounds per game while contributing in other facets as well, notching 99 assists, 42 steals and 5.4 PPG.
Taylor has made two stabs at just the second triple-double in Evansville history, most recently in the home game against Indiana State. He fell just two assists and a point short of accomplishing the feat. He is one of just three players to receive the honor for the Aces. Jeremy Stanton was named to the team each season from 1999-2001 while Reed Jackson notched the award in 1995.
“Troy loves competition, he will do anything to help our team out. He is quick and explosive; we are proud of him being named one of the top defenders in the league,” Simmons commented. “Ryan has developed into one of our hardest workers. He is smart and tough and has made an immediate impact with us while accepting his role.”
