Updated COVID-19 Policies
|
|
Dear Campus Community,
On Wednesday, October 27, the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) changed Vanderburgh County’s advisory status to yellow on its statewide COVID-19 map. If all the relevant metrics remain below the targets within the two-week window following this date, the University will be lifting the mask mandate beginning Wednesday, November 10. With the mask mandate lifted, masks or face coverings will not be required on campus. However, we strongly recommend that unvaccinated individuals continue masking in public spaces. All other COVID-19 policies and protocols, including capacity limits, will remain in effect.
Individuals and faculty members may continue to require masks or face coverings in their classrooms and office spaces.
Individual departments and administrative units may require masks in their private offices and departmental/administrative spaces. UE supports any members of the campus community who continue to wear a mask or face covering as a personal choice.
Classroom
Faculty may choose to require masks in their instructional spaces (i.e. classrooms and labs) and during research activities. Faculty who choose this option should communicate information to students before November 10.
Health Center and Other Areas Requiring Masks or Face Coverings
Masks or face coverings will continue to be required in the Health Center. If you do not have a mask or face covering, one will be provided. A list of areas requiring masks or face coverings is available on the Coronavirus webpage at evansville.edu/coronavirus. Signs may be placed in these and other areas indicating that masks or face coverings are required. Signs may be requested through the Office of Publications.
Mask Mandate Reinstitution
If any of the following conditions are met, the mask mandate will be reinstituted and will remain in place until all three metrics are below the targets for two consecutive weeks:
- The ISDH alert status for Vanderburgh County rises to a status of orange or red
- More than 20 active cases of COVID-19 on campus
- A decrease in the campus vaccination rate to lower than 80%
Continued Random Testing
The Random COVID-19 Testing Program will continue throughout the fall semester for those that are unvaccinated.
We are very thankful for your patience and understanding over the past 20 months as we?have navigated this pandemic together. We look toward the future and know that our community will continue to be supportive of all individuals who choose to continue wearing a mask. We also will continue to monitor national, regional, and campus statistics and implement any additional precautions as necessary.
Sincerely,
Coronavirus Task Force

November 8: First-Gen College Celebration!
|
|
Each year on November 8, colleges and universities across the nation partake in the First-Generation College Celebration. This awareness day was created in 2017 by the Council for Opportunity for Education (COE) and Center for First-Generation Student Success. The date also coincides with the anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act, which has helped millions of low-income, first-gen students earn college degrees.
Since its founding 167 years ago, UE has strived to create an atmosphere for success as well as a home away from home for first-generation, or "first-gen", college students. This particular group of students may have faced challenges in the college search, balancing academic coursework, and navigating everyday life in higher education. With personal constant support from faculty and staff, as well as various initiatives instituted by the University, students can successfully earn a college degree and develop lasting skills and talents for the future. For the 2021-22 academic year, approximately 14% of UE students are first-gen. Of the full-time faculty, staff, and administration, more than 30 individuals are also first-gen.
All weekend, UE has been highlighting several success stories of our first-gen students. If you missed them, you can also read all of them and more on our First-Gen Success Stories page!

Elevate Ventures Experienced UE and our Evansville Innovative Ecosystem via UE CFIC
|
|
November 5th, the UE CFIC Team welcomed the Elevate Team to campus, discussed our higher education initiatives, and the role UE can play in fostering innovation in this region.
In August, UE was the recipient of a $50,000 Elevate Nexus Grant. The Center will utilize those funds to develop a 3 pronged approach to better supporting innovation education in our region. 1) Creation of the MakerspACE on campus, where people in the community can receive help with graphic design, prototyping an idea, or creating a pitch deck; 2) Creation of an internship on campus so that space can be managed by a UE student; and 3) Creation of a summer institute at UE for K-16 educators in southern Indiana who want to learn how to infuse more creative problem solving in their classrooms (regardless of subject). Educators will then have their students compete in one of the many existing pitch competitions in Indiana, leveraging resources and dramatically increasing youth access to these events and surfacing those Changemaker ideas.
We can’t wait to get started, are honored and grateful to be with this group, and will document the journey!

In its final event of the fall, the University of Evansville men’s golf team travels to the Alabama A&M Golf Classic on Monday and Tuesday.
The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove will be the host for the tournament. The first and second rounds will be played on Monday with the final 18 holes set for Tuesday. Further information on par and teams participating are not available at this time.
UE’s last action came at the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate where Carson Parking posted the low round of the final day to improve his spot in the final standings at RidgePointe Country Club.
Parker was the second-highest finisher for the Purple Aces, tying for 64th place with a 3-round tally of 234. He improved in each round of the tournament, going from an 84 to a 77 before a 73 in the final 18. His score was tied for UE's second spot with Michael Ikejiani. He also had his low round of the event in the final 18, carding a 76.
Henry Kiel was the Aces top finisher. After posting a 73 to complete the opening day action, Kiel carded a 74 in the final round to tie for 44th.

Impressive season comes to an end for Aces in MVC Tournament championship match
|
|
A magical run through the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament came to an end for the University of Evansville women's soccer team with a 4-0 loss to Loyola Chicago in the championship match on Sunday afternoon in Chicago, Ill.
In goal, Michaela Till solidified her spot at the top of the career record book, reaching 100 saves on the season and 380 career saves, putting her 22 clear of the next Ace in program history. Till also becomes just the fifth Ace to record 100 saves in a season.
Evansville's defense shined in the early going, holding off an explosive Rambler attack. The Aces withstood chances from Loyola and responded on the counter, generating a good chance off the foot of fifth-year senior Jayme-Lee Hunter in the 13th minute, forcing a save from LUC keeper Maddie Hausmann. For the first 28 minutes of the match, Evansville held the Ramblers scoreless, the longest scoreless streak to open the match that an opponent recorded against Loyola in the MVC Tournament. In the 29th minute, Loyola struck first as Jenna Ross curled one in from the top of the box. Three minutes later, Loyola scored again as the Ramblers held a 2-0 lead at the break.
As had been true all season, the Aces were not ready to relent, continuing to press and look to create a chance in the second half. In the 52nd minute, senior Alex Eyler attempted to bring UE back within one, but had her attempt blocked. Much like Eyler, senior Emily Ormson attempted to push Evansville closer in the 71st minute, but Ormson also had her shot blocked. In the end, Loyola would score twice in the second half to capture the 4-0 win and the MVC Tournament title.
Evansville closes the book on the 2021 campaign after recording a remarkable campaign. The Aces 28 points on the season are the most since UE amassed an 11-6-3 record in 2014. Evansville's offense was regenerated, scoring 22 times, the most by the Aces since 2014, as well. Twice this season, Evansville reached a No. 5 ranking in the Midwest Region according to United Soccer Coaches, sitting ahead of Loyola and traditional powers Baylor and Kansas. Finally, the Aces opened the season with their best start in program history, running off a string of seven unbeaten matches to start the year.

Cardona and Feliciano lead Aces in setback at Bradley
|
|
Giulia Cardona and Melanie Feliciano recorded 19 and 18 kills, respectively, in a 3-1 setback to Bradley on Saturday evening in Renaissance Coliseum.
Cardona’s match-high 19 kills came along with 14 digs and two block assists. Feliciano also had a double-double for the Purple Aces (17-8, 7-7 MVC) adding 10 digs to her 18 kills. Alondra Vazquez was the third UE player to finish with a double-double, picking up 15 kills and 12 digs. Taya Haffner and Cecilia Thon led the squad in assists (28 and 27) while Thon picked up three aces.
Hannah Thompson led the Bradley (15-11, 11-4 MVC) attack with 12 kills and 14 digs. Serena Sparks led all players with her 16 digs.
Set 1 – Bradley 26, UE 24
Bradley jumped out to a 4-1 lead to open the night and would go up by as many as five points when they took a 15-10 advantage. With the Braves continuing to lead by five (17-12), the Aces made their move, going on an 8-2 run to take their first lead of the night at 20-19. Kills by Madisyn Steele and Melanie Feliciano made it an 18-16 game before the run continued with a Vazquez kill that gave the Aces the lead. Bradley countered with three in a row, but UE fought back once again to tie it at 22-22. With the game tied at 24-24, it was BU who added the final two points to take a 1-0 lead.
Set 2 – Bradley 25, UE 13
Another fast start saw the Braves take a 5-1 lead. After letting Evansville erase their advantage in the opening frame, Bradley kept the petal to the metal in the second, extending the lead to 13-5. The Aces were unable to close the gap with the Braves grabbing a 2-0 lead on the strength of the 25-13 win.
Set 3 – UE 27, Bradley 25
A Feliciano kill saw the Aces get off to their best start of the night, taking an early 5-4 edge. With the set knotted at 10-10, the Braves took their biggest edge at 17-12 as they looked to complete the 3-0 shutout. Evansville had other ideas, scoring the next six points to jump back in front at 18-17. Vazquez and Giulia Cardona had two kills apiece in the rally. The squad swapped the lead down the stretch before the Braves had set point, up 24-23. Down to its final point, the Aces took advantage of back-to-back Feliciano kills to go back in front. After BU tied it at 25-25, Feliciano and Vazquez forced a fourth set with a 27-25 win for UE.
Set 4 – Bradley 25, UE 21
In a close battle early on, the Braves held a 9-7 advantage. They would gradually add to their lead, going up by eight points at 23-15. With their opportunity for a win slipping away, the Aces made a final rally, scoring four in a row to make it a 23-19 game. Following a Bradley point, Vazquez added a kill before Cardona registered an ace to get UE back within three at 24-21. Unfortunately, the rally came just a few points too late when a kill sealed the 25-21 win in the fourth set and a 3-1 match.
The final home weekend of action is slated for next weekend when the Aces welcome Drake and UNI on Friday and Saturday.

Redbirds defeat Aces in weekend opener
|
|
Illinois State opened the night with a 25-13 win and kept up the intensity on their way to a 3-0 win over the University of Evansville volleyball team on Friday night in Redbird Arena.
Evansville (17-7, 7-6 MVC) was led by Giulia Cardona’s 12 kills with Alondra Vazquez adding eight. Melanie Feliciano had a team-high nine digs while Cecilia Thon added 18 assists. Tamara Otene paced the Redbirds (15-11, 11-3 MVC) with 13 kills while Kaity Weimerskirch had 11 digs.
Set 1 – ISU 25, UE 13
The Redbirds set the early tone in the opening frame, opening up a 7-2 lead with Nora Janka capping it off with an ace. After a kill by Cardona, ISU continued to add to its lead, extending it to double figures with another run that made it a 17-6 score. From there, the Redbirds took a 25-13 decision to take the first set.
Set 2 – ISU 26, UE 24
An early kill by Melanie Feliciano saw the Purple Aces tie things up at 4-4. Illinois State responded by posting the next seven points to take their largest lead of the frame. Evansville showed its character, scrapping for each point. Their work would pay off when consecutive service aces by Laura Ruiz tied the game back up at 16-16. After falling behind by the 11-4 score, the Aces responded immediately with five in a row. A Cardona kill got it started before Alondra Vazquez added another. Feliciano also had an ace to chip into the deficit.
After the Aces tied it up, the Redbirds wrestled the lead away, going up 20-17. Down to its final point trailing 24-22, UE stormed back when kills by Vazquez and Feliciano tied it up. Illinois State regained control with the final two points, winning by a 26-24 final on their way to a 2-0 lead.
Set 3 – ISU 25, UE 10
In the third set, it was another early run by the Redbirds that gave them control. Scoring the first six points of the set, ISU grabbed the momentum and would not give it up. Evansville got within five, but the Redbirds answered each time, pulling away for a 25-10 win to clinch the match by a final of 3-0.
On Saturday, UE will look for a weekend split when they face Bradley in a 5 p.m. contest in Peoria.

Aces are MVC Tournament championship match bound after Ormson's golden goal
|
|
For the first time since 2015, the University of Evansville women's soccer team is headed to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship match following a 2-1 golden-goal win in two overtimes over Valparaiso on Friday afternoon in Chicago, Ill.
Seniors Alex Eyler and Emily Ormson represented the attack for Evansville on a sunny afternoon in the Windy City, each finding the back of the net. In goal, fifth-year senior Michaela Till was stout as always, allowing a goal and stopping five shots, while picking up the win and moving into sixth in MVC history in career saves.
Evansville wasted little time in taking the lead in its MVC semifinal clash with the Beacons. In the seventh minute, the Aces generated multiple opportunities, keyed by a shot from the top of the box from Eyler that hit the crossbar. On the rebound, fifth-year senior Jayme-Lee Hunter headed the ball back on frame, which was saved and rebounded back to Hunter. The New Zealand native then turned and pushed the ball back to Eyler, who slipped the ball to the opposite post and past the keeper to give Evansville the early 1-0 lead.
Less than seven minutes later, Valpo answered the Aces off a corner. As the ball sailed in, Nicole Norfolk clipped the ball towards goal that Addy Joiner volleyed in from close range to tie the match at one. The latter half hour of the first half featured less chances for the two sides as the Aces and Beacons went to the break with nearly identical stat lines with each team recording five shots and putting two on goal.
Evansville's defense was superb in the second half as it faced a handful of Beacon chances. In all, Valpo out-shot the Aces, 10-3, with three coming on-goal and Till stopping all three as the match went to overtime.
In the first overtime, Hunter nearly ended the match, putting a shot on-goal that Valpo keeper Nikki Coryell saved to prolong the match. Till answered Coryell with a save of her own in the 100th minute to force a second OT.
Three minutes into the second overtime, Evansville took advantage of a chance. Following a goal kick from Till, the ball bounced and got away from senior Emily Wolak. As the ball bounced towards Valpo's keeper, Ormson approached to make the clearance difficult. As Valpo cleared the ball, Ormson deflected it back towards goal and the Folsom, Cali. native brought down the ball and quickly volleyed it home from an acute angle to win the match for Evansville.
The Aces are the first six seed to advance to the MVC Tournament championship match since Indiana State did so in 2012.
Evansville will face top-seed and host Loyola Chicago on Sunday at 1 PM at Loyola Soccer Park in Chicago, Ill.

Swimming & Diving Aces Sweep First-Ever Meet At Deaconess Aquatic Center
|
|
The first-ever swim meet at the Deaconess Aquatic Center will go down in Evansville city history as an impressive one for the hometown University of Evansville swimming and diving teams, as the Purple Aces swept its triangular meet with the visiting Saint Louis University Billikens and University of Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans.
The UE men held off the visiting Billikens, 154-135, behind first-place showings in the final two events of the meet. Meanwhile, the UE women posted a 172-128 victory over SLU, while also notching a 153.50-135.50 victory over Little Rock.
“I thought we got a great effort all the way around today,” said UE swimming and diving head coach Stuart Wilson. “Everyone on both teams contributed to the team effort.
“I really want to thank our seniors for making the sacrifices and commitment to represent UE over the last four years. A new chapter in their life will be coming soon, and they will take their lifelong experiences in swimming to their new adventures.”
In UE’s “Senior Day” meet, senior Zeke Metz (Topeka, Kan./Seaman) helped the Purple Aces hold off the Billikens on the men’s side, as Metz won the men’s 200-yard IM event, the second-to-last event of the day, in a time of 1:56.66 to win by two seconds over freshman teammate Carlos Souto Vilas (A Coruna, Spain). It was Metz’s second individual title of the day, as he also won the men’s 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:44.77.
Then, with the meet hanging in the balance, the quartet of freshmen Daniel Santos Lopez (Madrid, Spain) and Jakob Grundbacher (Long Beach, Calif.), senior Josh Graves (Topeka, Kan./Seaman) and junior Riccardo Di Domenico (Johannesburg, South Africa) posted a time of 1:25.38 to win the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay and ice the victory for UE. Santos Lopez, Di Domenico and Grundbacher had teamed with sophomore Alon Baer (Gesher Haziv, Israel) earlier in the meet to make Evansville history, as they recorded UE’s first event victory at the Deaconess Aquatic Center in the 200 Medley Relay.
On the women’s side, junior Sage Moore (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington) and freshman Sveva Brugnoli (Rome, Italy) helped power the Purple Aces to a sweep of the triangular meet. Moore swept the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events in times of 1:08.47 and 2:25.34, respectively. Meanwhile, Brugnoli cruised to victories in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events in times of 56.94 and 2:08.64. Her time of 56.94 in the 100 fly is a season-best mark, and ranks her as the eighth-fastest swimmer in UE history in the event.
The UE women were also aided by the job of the female divers, as senior Maggie Franz (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) led the way by sweeping both the one-meter and three-meter competitions. In fact, UE swept the three-meter competition, as freshmen Val Marx (Evansville, Ind./Reitz) and Kaylee Ivy (Evansville, Ind./Central) placed second and third in the event.
“I was really proud of how our younger divers stepped up today,” said UE diving head coach Dustin Bredemeier. “We had some people out today, but both Val and Kaylee stepped up big, and I was really proud of how all three women competed this afternoon.”
Evansville will return to the pool next weekend, as UE travels to Carbondale, Illinois to take part in the Southern Illinois Invitational, before beginning its winter training period.
