Happy 158th Birthday UE!
|
|
Founders Day Facts: In February of 1854, John Collins Moore founded Moores Hill Male and Female Institute, what we now know as UE. The citizens of Evansville raised the necessary funds to move the College to Evansville and our chartering as Evansville College occurred in February 1919. Then in February 1967 we officially became the University of Evansville. Happy 158 UE!
Everyone’s invited for Purple Birthday Cake in honor of UE’s 158th on Friday, February 17, at 12:45 p.m. in the lobby of the Ridgway University Center.
Congratulations to the following UE Alumni Association Awards recipients who will be honored at the Founders Day luncheon on Sunday, February 19:
R. Edward Coleman ’65, professor of radiology at Duke University School of Medicine – Distinguished Alumnus Award
Craig Bryan ’01, Associate Director of the National Center for Veterans Studies at the University of Utah – Young Alumnus Award

Campus Directory
|
|
We realize that many people miss the convenience of a printed phone directory and that there is some confusion about the electronic directory. As a reminder, it is all housed on Acelink.
This is the direct link to the page: http://acelink.evansville.edu/Directory.
At this link, you can enter a person’s name or an office in the search box to easily find the information. For instance, if you type “University Relations” in the search box, it will bring up the contact information for everyone in our office. Below that feature, you will also find links to a Printable Employee Directory, Employee Directory by Department, and a Printable Student Directory. Once opened, you can save any of these to your computer, or print the pages you want so you don’t have to go back to Acelink every time!
As noted at the beginning of the academic year, there were a number of factors that made it necessary for the directory to be an electronic document. The primary reason was that the expense to print it had been absorbed by the company that produced it; they paid for it by selling ads in the directory. They notified UE that it was not profitable and that they were discontinuing the practice. In addition to cost savings, the electronic version also allows us to have a database as updated as our Datatel information. Much as our printed calendars were always out of date before we ever got them, the phone directory, too was always outdated from the start. So, the good news is that as people come and go, the information is up to date.
Remember, as with the previous printed directory, all this information is for internal use only and is not to be shared with those outside the University of Evansville. Also, to reassure those who might have this concern – this is the same database as was used for the printed directory, so if you have indicated your personal information is not to be made public, it will not be in this format either.
Thank you again for your understanding and if you need any help with the directory, please let us know. Office of University Relations uerelations@evansville.edu.

UE Theatre Production of The Cripple of Inishmaan Opens This Weekend
|
|
The UE Department of Theatre opens the play The Cripple of Inishmaan, by Academy Award-winner Martin McDonagh, Friday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Shanklin Theatre. Directed by R. Scott Lank, Professor of Theatre, the production continues with performances at 7:30 p.m. on February 18, 23, 24, and 25, and at 2 p.m. on February 19 and 26.
Based on actual events and set in 1934 off the coast of Ireland, the story begins as a Hollywood movie crew arrives on a neighboring island to film the documentary Man of Aran. This tidbit of exciting news sends several oddball villagers into a frenetic desire to escape the tedium of their impoverished daily lives by getting cast in the film. Critics agree McDonagh's true talent lies in the haunting way he imbues his stories with quirky characters, both satirizing and glorifying the Irish penchant for self-mythologizing and tall tales.
Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $11 for seniors, students and UE faculty. UE students may obtain one free student rush ticket beginning at noon the day of the performance they wish to attend. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call (812) 488-2031, Monday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m.

1932 Student Government Association
|
|
From the 1932 LinC, a description of the Student Government Association's accomplishments during that year::
"The Hospital and Relief Board constitution was amended so that surplus funds in its treasury might be used as a student loan fund. Action was taken to make it possible to include the price of individual pictures in the Linc in the student activities fee. The Athletic Board constitution was repealed because it was felt that the Department of Physical Education should have the powers formerly held by this board.
The Student Government Association sponsored an all-college party welcoming the freshmen to campus. The Booster Day Parade and celebration were successfully managed. The Homecoming activities and the Campus Sing were also directed by the Association.
During the football and basketball seasons many pep assemblies were held, and they were quite successful in noticeably improving the college spirit.
Most important, however, was the action taken toward the complete reorganization of the SGA, merging student and faculty government into a cooperative control by both students and faculty of practically all phases of college life."

UE Softball Set to Open 2012 Season at Alcorn State
|
|
The University of Evansville softball team will travel to Lorman, Miss., this weekend to open the 2012 season with a three-game series against Alcorn State. The Purple Aces will take on the Braves in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday before wrapping up the series with a single game at noon on Sunday.
Head coach Mark Redburn returns 14 lettterwinners for the 2012 campaign, after graduating just two players in last year’s seniors Jen Stahlhut and Kelci Alsip. In addition to retaining his entire pitching staff, Redburn also brings in six newcomers to this year’s squad, including pitcher Sarah Patterson, a junior transfer who comes to UE after playing two seasons at Central Michigan. Five freshmen also join the Purple Aces this spring, including outfielder Victoria Dellorto, infielder Mariah Ferguson, catcher Lauren Lum and utility players Kayla Fortner and Alli Nolan.
“I’m very excited for the season to start,” said Redburn. “We’ve worked hard to make some adjustments within the program over the past two seasons and I feel like we have transitioned well to adopt the new philosophy. My staff now has two recruiting classes here, which is another step to building the program. And coupled with the great leadership from our upperclassmen we have had just a really positive and upbeat team environment.”
A key to this year’s season for the Aces will be a healthy and versatile bullpen. Junior Kendall Kautz returns to lead the staff after a knee surgery limited her appearances last season. Kautz and transfer Patterson will split a majority of the game starts, while sophomores Taylor Perry and Emily Morris will battle for the third and fourth spot in the rotation.
The Aces’ lineup boasts plenty of depth in the infield, giving Redburn options at every position. Sophomore Niki Rahming and junior Brianna Villanueva will both see time at third base while senior shortstop Amy Gaertner and Ferguson will round out the left side of the infield. Junior Alicia Betancur returns at second base along with sophomore Kacey Rogers while seniors Allison Aguilera and Ashleigh Rahming complete the infield at first. Behind the plate, junior Halie Malone will be joined by Lum and Nolan to handle the catching duties.
In the outfield, Dellorto and sophomore Tamara Robey will anchor left and center, respectively, while sophomore Katie Sears, senior Maggie Little and Fortner will vie for time in right field.

Three School Records Broken in Day One of MVC Championships
|
|
The University of Evansville women’s swimming and diving team posted three school records and several personal-best times in the first day of the 2011-12 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
Both of the Aces’ relay teams that swam in today’s heats broke UE school records. Senior Alex Howard, junior Jill Enge and freshmen Michelle Tipton and Samantha Montgomery opened the meet with a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, touching in at 1:35.18 to beat the previous record of 1:36.53, which was set in 2009-10.
Howard, Tipton and Montgomery were later joined by freshman Caroline Lee to make up the 400-medley relay team that broke another school relay record, posting a time of 3:49.75 to claim third place.
Individually, Tipton scored the Aces’ highest finish of the night, placing third and touching in at a season-best 4:54.59 in the final heat of the 500-yard freestyle, breaking the school record for the second time this year.
Freshman Samantha Montgomery also made it to an A-Final, finishing in seventh place in the 50-free with a final time of 24.46. After barely missing the cut for the A-Final in the 200-yard individual medley, Lee came back to win the B-Final, placing ninth overall with a time of 2:06.49.
On the boards, junior Sadie Wells led the Aces with a fifth place finish on the 1-meter, with a final score of 241.10.
“All around we just had a great solid effort by everyone,” said head coach Rickey Perkins. “We had a lot of season and lifetime bests, and I am happy with our performance. We know that tomorrow is another big day and we just have to keep focused on racing and competing.”
After the strong showing, the Purple Aces ended the day ranked fourth with 130 points, standing above Northern Iowa (87) and below Southern Illinois, who holds on to third place with 213 points.
The Aces will return to the pool today for the second day of preliminary and final heats beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Aces Tennis Set For Two Weekend Matches
|
|
With three weeks of play under its belt, the University of Evansville women’s tennis team will play a pair of matches this weekend, beginning on Friday evening.
Arkansas State marks the first opponents for UE as the Red Wolves will face the Aces at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Tri-State Athletic Club. On Saturday, Evansville will travel to Lexington, Ky. for a matchup against the University of Kentucky.
Evansville begins the weekend with a 4-1 mark after splitting a pair of matches last weekend. On Friday, the Aces grabbed a 6-1 win at Murray State before dropping a 5-2 decision to Chattanooga.
Aleks Dzakula has put forth a perfect 5-0 mark in singles play and has been equally impressive in doubles play with partner Jessica Raatz, posting a 4-1 record. The duo of Natasha James and Dora Kotsiou are undefeated in doubles play, winning all five matches.
The Red Wolves of Arkansas State are an even 2-2 on the season, picking up wins over Tennessee-Martin and SEMO while dropping contests at Colorado State and Denver. Last time out, ASU was on the winning end of a 5-1 decision against Southeast Missouri State.
Kentucky enters the weekend with a 6-1 mark and is riding a three-match winning streak. Last weekend, UK picked up wins over Cincinnati and Winthrop. The Wildcats will face off against Eastern Kentucky on Friday.
Next weekend, the Aces will play host to Butler and Eastern Illinois. Both matches will take place at the Tri-State Athletic Club.

Aces Baseball Opens 2012 Season In Music City
|
|
The University of Evansville baseball team opens the 2012 season this weekend in Nashville, facing Belmont, Lipscomb, and Middle Tennessee as a part of the Music City Classic.
First pitch of the season will be Friday at 4:00 p.m. vs. the Bruins. The Aces will then play Lipscomb at noon Saturday and MTSU at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
Graduating three 2011 All-Missouri Valley Conference selections and seven starting position players, including utility man Cody Fick, a two-time All-American and 23rd round draft pick by the Philadelphia Phillies, the UE baseball team will look to their experienced pitching staff and veteran middle infield to lead the way in 2012.
“We have a solid pitching staff this season,” said head coach Wes Carroll. “It will be a matter of getting runs on the board to support them. I’m excited to see what we can do this opening weekend and look forward to seeing them compete.”
Entering his fourth season at the helm, Carroll has led his team to back-to-back above .500 years with an 85-82 overall career record, including 2011’s 28-25 mark and 7-13 record in the MVC. Carroll will have the task this season of developing bats after graduating three of UE’s top four offensive threats.
Headlining Evansville’s returning cast are senior second baseman Trentt Copeland and junior shortstop Eric Stamets. Copeland was a second team All-MVC selection and MVC first team Scholar Athlete last spring, hitting .308 with 17 doubles and had a .985 fielding percentage, while Stamets turned heads in the summer as a Cape Cod League All-Star and projects to be one of the best shortstops in the nation this year. The Copeland-Stamets duo turned a Valley-high 58 double plays in 2011. Both were named to College Sports Madness’ Preseason All-Conference team, while Stamets was selected to the Missouri Valley Conference preseason all-conference team, voted on by the league’s eight head coaches.
The Aces return a full pitching staff and also add three freshman hurlers, including southpaw Kyle Freeland, a 35th round pick by the Phillies. Sam Johns, who is back after suffering a season-ending elbow injury in his first start last year, lefty Cole Isom, who had a solid rookie season as UE’s number two, and Freeland are likely to be Evansville’s starting rotation.
Senior Zach Taylor also returns after a medical redshirt last year and is projected to be UE’s ace out of the bullpen. In addition to nine returning relievers, junior Kyle Lloyd will add experience and depth on the mound, starting 15 games in 2011.

Bears, Shockers Up Next For Lady Aces
|
|
With just five games remaining in the regular season, the University of Evansville women’s basketball team hits the road this week, making stops at Missouri State and Wichita State. Tip-off versus the Lady Bears Friday is set for 7:05 p.m., while the Purple Aces will take on the Shockers Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
The Aces come off a 1-1 weekend, earning an exciting, 48-45, win over Creighton, which snapped UE’s seven-game losing streak, last Thursday. UE fell, 55-51, to Drake on Sunday in a close battle. On the year, junior Samantha Heck and senior guard Briyana Blair lead the team offensively. Heck averages 13.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, while Blair nearly averages a double-double with 10.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Juniors Meagan Collins (8.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg) and Taylor Ware (6.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg) have also been steady contributors on the scoring end.
Junior Meagan Collins piloted Evansville to a 48-45 win over Creighton, leading the Aces with 18 points, going 6-for-8 from the field, and grabbed seven rebounds. With 1:32 remaining in the game, Collins knocked down a three in the corner that gave UE a two-point lead, then secured the rebound on the other end and sealed the win with a free throw after Creighton was forced to foul. Against Drake, Collins had another solid performance with nine points and five rebounds. The Boonville, Ind. native muscled a shot between two defenders to give UE their first lead of the game with just under five minutes to go, but unfortunately the Bulldogs regained the lead and edged UE, 55-51. On the week, Collins averaged a team-best 13.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, shooting .500 percent (9-18) from the floor and .778 (7-9) from the free throw line.
Against Drake (2/12), Evansville had a big game from behind the arc, knocking down a season-high 10 threes in a season-high 30 attempts. Senior Staci Gillum drained a career-high four threes (4-9), while junior Taylor Ware matched her career-high, going 2-for-2 from downtown. Junior Samantha Heck also made two (2-6). The last time UE hit 10 or more threes as a team was Dec 3, 2010 when the Aces topped Valparaiso, 69-67.
Senior Chelsea Falkenstein will be out the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. Falkenstein injured her knee in UE’s game at UT Martin on Dec. 16. Because she missed two games earlier this season due to a concussion suffered versus Ball State on Nov. 29, she is eligible to redshirt. Falkenstein averaged 3.6 points and 5.5 rebounds before the season-ending injury. She had surgery on Friday, Jan. 20th.
Freshman Kat Taylor will also be out the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL occurring in practice on Monday, Jan. 16th. Taylor played in 13 games in her rookie campaign, averaging 1.8 points, and 1.1 rebounds.
Entering the week, Briyana Blair ranks 44th in the nation and third in the MVC, averaging 9.3 rebounds per game. Blair’s 20 rebounds in UE’s first outing vs. Bradley (1/8) not only represented a career-high, but also marked the first time a player has pulled down 20 or more boards in a game since 1998, when Shyla McKibbon tallied 23, also versus Bradley. Blair has recorded double figure rebounds eight times this season.
Senior point guard Staci Gillum led the Aces with a career-high 15 points on a career-best four three-pointers vs. Drake (2/12). In UE’s win over Creighton (2/9), Gillum recorded a game-high six assists. Against Bradley (2/2), Gillum nearly recorded her first career double-double with nine points and career-high eight assists. In the last four contests, the Des Moines, Iowa native has averaged 7.8 points, 4.25 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game.
Senior Briyana Blair has single handedly recorded more double-doubles in one season than the entire UE team logged in the last two years. Versus Southern Illinois on Jan. 29th, Blair achieved her sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. In the 2010-11 season, the team combined for three double-doubles, while they recorded zero in 2009-10. Blair has the most double-doubles in a single season since Jamie Gray logged 12 in 2003-04.
Evansville has used seven different starting lineups this season with point guard Staci Gillum and forward Samantha Heck serving as the only players to start all 24 games. Heck has started 35 games consecutively for the Aces; the longest streak among active players. For the first time in nine games, Coach Epps changed the lineup at Bradley (2/2), swapping in Miranda Liles for Meagan Collins in the forward position. The lineup changed again at UNI (2/4) with Liles staying and Collins replacing Blair who had started the previous ten straight games.
Sophomore Miranda Liles as shown rapid growth in the last month, as she made her first career start at Bradley (2/2), and scored nine points in a then career-high 32 minutes of play. In her second start at UNI (2/4), Liles also had a career game with five rebounds and matched a best 11 points in 36 minutes on the floor. In UE’s last game vs. Creighton, Liles started and played 38 minutes, grabbing a career-high seven rebounds and scored five points. In those three games, Liles averaged 8.3 points and 4.7 rebounds.
