This month’s presentation will be held this Thursday (January 12) at noon in the Blue & Gold Room at Old National Bank's headquarters in downtown Evansville. It will feature a conversation with our new mayor, Lloyd Winnecke and will be moderated by Robert Dion, Associate Professor of Political Science.

Less than two weeks after taking office as the 34th mayor of Evansville, Lloyd Winnecke — a University of Evansville alumnus — will share his vision for the city and talk with community members about how they can help move Evansville forward.

Before he was elected mayor in November 2011, Winnecke, an Evansville native, worked as senior vice president and marketing director at Fifth Third Bank after spending 17 years in television news. He was elected a Vanderburgh County commissioner in 2008 and served as president of that body. He also served nine years on the Vanderburgh County Council, including three years as president and one year as finance chairman.

Winnecke earned a Bachelor of Science degree in communication from the University of Evansville in 1982.

Attendees are welcome to eat lunch during the presentation. There is a restaurant conveniently located in the Old National Bank lobby. As always, the event is free and open to the public.
 

There will be a joint call-out meeting for new members interested in being a part of either WUEV (the campus radio station) or AcesTV on Thursday evening beginning at 5 p.m. outside of the WUEV studios (located on the second floor of the Ridgway Center at the top of the main staircase.)  On-air DJ positions are available for all of WUEV’s shows, from jazz to top 40 to hip-hop and alternative music.  Positions covering UE athletics are also available.

Everyone is invited to participate in the University of Evansville's day-long celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 16.

Martin Luther King's historic speeches will air throughout the day on the University of Evansville's radio station, WUEV 91.5 FM.

William G. and Rose M. Mays Martin Luther King Jr. Lectureship: Robiaun Charles

Through the generosity of William G. and Rose M. Mays, this lectureship funds the annual keynote speaker during the University of Evansville’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. Robiaun Charles is the assistant vice president for development and external relations for the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE) at the University of Texas at Austin. In this role, she provides strategic direction and leadership for the development, communications, special events, and community relations operations of the division.

Before joining UT Austin, Charles served as the special assistant to the president and director of diversity initiatives at the University of Evansville where she advised the president and senior administration on a range of diversity issues. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Charles is currently working on her doctorate in higher education leadership and policy at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

A reception in the Class of 1959 Gallery and Lounge will immediately follow the lecture.

UE Women's Awareness is proud to announce the upcoming annual performance of the Vagina Monologues set for Saturday, February 11 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, February 12 at 2 p.m. in Eykamp Hall! Every year, this moving piece is performed as part of V-Day, a global campaign created by Eve Ensler to stop violence against women. The Friends of Art will sponsor an opening reception and lecture for "Presence and Absence: A Photography Exhibit by Susan Bryant" from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, January 11 in the Melvin Peterson Gallery. All members of the UE community and the public are welcome. 

Susan Bryant received her BFA in painting in 1976 from Indiana University and her MFA in photography in 1978 from Indiana State University. She is a Professor of Art at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, where she has taught photography for the past 29 years. Her personal work includes gelatin silver prints, hand-colored silver prints, digital photographs, and most recently, the 19th century processes of daguerreotypes, tintypes and wet plate collodion negatives and positives (ambrotypes). Her work has been widely exhibited across the United States in solo and juried exhibitions. She is the recipient of a Tennessee Arts Commission Fellowship and is represented by The Cumberland Gallery in Nashville, Tennessee. 

"Presence and Absence: A Photography Exhibit by Susan Bryant" will be on display in the Melvin Peterson Gallery from January 11 through February 22. The Melvin Peterson Gallery, located on the corner of Lincoln and Weinbach avenues, is open Monday-Friday from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and Saturday from noon-3:00 p.m.

All UE men who have an interest in singing are invited to join UE's Men's Chorus. The Men's Chorus is a group of 20 men who rehearse twice a week and perform each semester both on an off campus.  The Men's Chorus sang for the opening men's basketball game in 2010-2011, performs annually at the Victory Theater in the UE Holiday Pops Concert, and in May 2011, members of the Men's Chorus traveled to New York City to perform in Carnegie Hall.  There is no audition necessary.  Contact Dr. Dennis Malfatti at dm155@evansville.edu for more information.

The Writing Center will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Students who wish assistance with a paper or other writing assignment may make an appointment online for a 50-minute session with a Writing Center tutor. Classes began Monday at Harlaxton College, the British Campus of the University of Evansville, with 183 students in attendance. 

The spring student body includes students from the University of Evansville and Baker University (Kansas), Eastern Illinois University (Illinois), Marian University (Indiana), Simpson College (Iowa), the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (Wisconsin), Wabash College (Indiana), Watkins College of Art, Design, and Film, Western Kentucky University (Kentucky), and William Jewell College (Missouri).  UE faculty members teaching at Harlaxton this term include Arthur Brown (English), Wes Milner (International Studies), and Tamara Wandel (Communication).   

The Harlaxton curriculum features the core course, the British Experience, and is supplemented by a range of classes in the liberal arts and pre-professional studies.  Course-related field trips and optional weekend travel provide opportunities to engage the culture both in Britain and beyond.  Harlaxton College recently celebrated its 40th anniversary serving as the British Campus of the University of Evansville and providing world-class education in a splendid English manor house in the East Midlands countryside. 

All faculty, staff, and emeriti tickets for the men’s basketball games will now be located in the lower bowl! Seats will now be closer to concessions and restrooms. The University of Evansville men’s basketball team will play its third Missouri Valley Conference road game of the season on Tuesday, traveling to Terre Haute to face off against Indiana State at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

On the road at Illinois State, the Aces lost another tough contest as Jackie Carmichael hit a game-winning three as time expired to give the Redbirds a 75-73 win.  The contest featured 18 lead changes, including five in the last minute of play.  Evansville shot 56% in the game, led by Colt Ryan’s 25 points, but Illinois State converted 15 offensive rebounds into 21 points to make the difference.

With his fourth-consecutive 25-point outing, Colt Ryan has continued to move up the scoring list at UE.  He currently stands in 25th place all-time with 1,236 points through his 2 1/2 year career.  Standing ahead of Ryan on the list is current Aces head coach Marty Simmons, who is 54 points ahead with 1,265 points for his career.

Ryan ranks seventh in the nation and second in the MVC averaging 21.3 PPG.  His 27.5 point per game average in league play is No. 1, solidly ahead of Creighton’s Doug McDermott.  Ryan has scored 25 points in all four MVC games thus far.

Senior Denver Holmes has quietly put up a strong conference in Missouri Valley Conference play.  The Olathe, Kan. native has averaged 13.0 points per game, putting him in the top 15 in the league through four games.  His top outing of 16 points came in the road win at UNI.  He has also been perfect from the free throw line, hitting all 12 attempts.

Five of Evansville’s seven losses have come by an amazing 11 combined points.  The Aces fell to Wichita State by a point, lost three two-point games (Illinois State, Tennessee Tech and TCU) and fell at UIC by four points.  Four of those contests saw UE hold a lead in the final 1:30 of play.

Indiana State enters Tuesdays game with a 10-5 record and a 1-3 league mark.  The Sycamores won their first five games before posting a 9-2 non-conference record, which included wins over Texas Tech and Vanderbilt.  Guard Jake Odum, an MVC Preseason All-Conference Team member, leads ISU with 88 assists, 30 steals and 5.3 rebounds per game.  ISU’s top scorer is Dwayne Lathan, who has averaged 12.1 PPG.  Lathan was the star in the Sycamore’s last game, tying for the game high with 17 points in ISU’s 69-63 loss to Missouri State. 

Ryan helped UE end its tenure at Roberts Stadium with a 73-67 win over Illinois State last season.  Ryan scored a career-high 32 points on 8-of-17 shooting and a 13-14 performance from the free throw line.   The Redbirds held a 37-32 lead at the half, but UE rallied to outscore ISU by 11 points in the second half to take the win.
