Arguably one of the best players to come out of Memorial High School, Mallory Ladd has decided to transfer from Valparaiso University back home to play for Coach Oties Epps and the University of Evansville Purple Aces. Ladd, who scored 1,803 points in her high school career and grabbed a school-record 1,163 rebounds, led Memorial to the 3A state championship with a 28-1 mark in her senior year. She was named Indiana Miss Basketball runner-up and was a first team all-state selection in 2011 by the Associated Press and Hoosier Basketball Magazine. In the first month of the 2011-12 season, the 6’1 freshman forward played in six games with the Crusaders, averaging 10.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, also shooting 91.3 percent (21-23) from the free throw line. As per NCAA transfer rules, Ladd will have to sit out one year, but will be eligible to join the Aces on the court in the second semester of the 2012-13 season.
Against Eastern Kentucky Briyana Blair recorded the second double-double (17 pts, 10 rebs) of her career and second this season. Her first versus Brown (11 pts, 14 rebs) on Nov. 25 marked the first for an Ace this season.

Senior Staci Gillum and junior Samantha Heck have been named the 2011-12 team captains for the University of Evansville women’s basketball team. Gillum, a native of West Des Moines, Iowa, served as the Purple Aces’ captain and point guard last season, averaging 4.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, playing in all 30 contests. Harris' Career Effort Not Enough As Aces Fall To TTU
|
|
Senior Kenneth Harris scored a career-high 23 points, but Kevin Murphy recorded 23 of his own to help Tennessee Tech take a 72-70 victory over the Purple Aces men’s basketball team at the Ford Center on Saturday afternoon.
Harris was 13-of-14 from the free throw line and 5-10 from the floor while Colt Ryan chipped in 22 points and was a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe.
The Golden Eagles (6-4) got off to a quick start, recording the first ten points. The Aces (4-5) missed their first five shots from the floor while committing four turnovers over the first four minutes of the game. Jaylon Moore got UE on the board with a bucket five minutes in.
Shooting continued to be a struggle for UE, as it began the game 1-for-12 from the floor. A Kenneth Harris bucket ended the stretch. Tennessee Tech continued to hold a lead between eight and ten points, but with the score 18-8, Evansville made its first significant run of the game. Colt Ryan notched his first bucket of the game and hit the ensuing free throw.
Following a TTU turnover, Denver Holmes scored on the fast break to make it a five-point game. The lead would go down to three after a pair of Harris free throws before Chase Dunn ended the run, hitting a three for the Golden Eagles.
Evansville continued to fight its way back, cutting the deficit to just a point (31-30) heading into the halftime break. Ryan hit his second and-one with two seconds left in the half. Ryan had eight points and six boards in the half while Harris had a game-high 12 in the opening period while connecting on all eight free throw attempts.
The Aces carried the momentum from the closing minutes of the first half into the second stanza. A dunk by Harris in the first minute gave Evansville its first advantage of the contest at 32-31. UE continued what would turn into a 19-9 run to open up the half.
Ryan hit a pair of treys while Holmes and Harris were responsible for the rest of the scoring in the run. The Golden Eagles fought their way back into the game. Down 49-40, TTU scored the next seven to get back within a pair. Jud Dillard notched three in the run, which UE ended on a pair of Harris free throws.
Tennessee Tech continued to claw its way back, eventually tying the game up at 57-57 as Zach Bailey hit a pair of free throws. With under seven minutes remaining, Zac Swansey, the Preseason Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, hit a three to give the Golden Eagles their first lead since halftime, 62-61.
Chase Dunn hit a trey for TTU on the ensuing trip down the floor, putting a cap on what would be a 25-12 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 65-61 advantage. A Harris bucket, which pushed him over his career mark, ended a four-minute scoreless drought for the Aces.
Down 68-63 with three minutes left, Evansville scored the next five points to tie it up. Following a made free throw by TTU, Ryan Sawvell hit a pair of free throws with 40 seconds remaining to help the Aces retake the lead. For the second time in the last four games, though, it was the three-pointer that made the difference as Kevin Murphy drained a trey with 27 ticks left.
A late three fell short for the Aces as the Golden Eagles came away with the 2-point win.
Ryan and Harris were the lone double figure scorers for UE. Holmes tallied nine points while Ned Cox and Sawvell had six. Jud Dillard notched 18 for Tennessee Tech. The Aces continued their improvement from the line, hitting 27 out of 30 free throws. Improvement was also shown on the boards as UE finished with a 36-24 rebounding edge.
On Tuesday, UE will play its final road non-conference game of the season, traveling to Miami (Ohio). Tip is set for 6 p.m. at Millett Hall.
