October 2 Andiron Lecture by Sara Petrosillo - Weaponizing Mary: How Sexism Met Racism in a Pre-modern World
|
|
Sara Petrosillo is an assistant professor of English at the University of Evansville. She holds a PhD in medieval literature from the University of California, Davis and a BA in English and Italian literature from Colby College. Her research and teaching interests include: medieval and early modern literature, feminist theories, medieval manuscript studies, poetics, and critical animal studies. She is currently working on a book, Hawking Women: Falconry, Gender, and the Poetics of Control in Medieval Literary Culture, and she has published essays in medieval, early modern, and theory journals and in a book on animals in medieval literature. Her Andiron lecture on medieval antisemitism and the literary genre, “Miracles of the Virgin,” derives from her interest in examining racial and gender biases in discourses from premodern to modern culture.
The most iconic woman in the Middle Ages graced love poems, the stage, stained glass windows, and even personal wax seals. Medieval depictions of the Virgin Mary offer an extraordinary picture of female power. Women from every social class viewed Mary as an exceptional saint but also—and crucially— as someone who shared something with all of them: she was a woman. Yet, at the height of her popularity in devotional literature, Mary became a violent tool in the hands of authors and audience: the persecutor of non-Christians in the literary genre “The Miracles of the Virgin.” How did a figure of motherhood and female power become such a dangerously powerful weapon? This widely popular genre demonstrates how sexism met racism in a premodern world. Tracing the racist weaponization of a female icon sheds light on our own society’s trouble with detecting the roots of oppression, especially when those roots are entangled in popular culture.
The lecture begins at 4:00 p.m.

Volleyball earns big road sweep at Tennessee State
|
|
In a match that featured back-and-forth action all evening, the University of Evansville volleyball team overcame deficits in each set to earn an impressive 3-0 sweep at Tennessee State on Tuesday evening.
Freshman Melanie Feliciano led the Aces (2-2) offense with 15 kills as four players finished with seven or more. Rachel Tam notched 13 while Patricia Joseph and Alondra Vazuqez posted seven apiece. In just three sets of work, Allana McInnis totaled 38 assists, an average of 12.7 per game. Gabriela Macedo posted 15 digs while Vazquez finished with nine and Tam added eight.
“I am very happy about how the team reacted against a very physical and athletic team,” UE coach Fernando Morales said after the win. “TSU is a team that makes great plays and our girls did a great job of being patient and wait for our moments to go on our runs. We executed really well in the end of each set; that is a great sign.”
Evansville got off to a quick start in game one, taking a 5-1 lead. Three different players had a kill in the stretch, including Kate Tsironis, who capped off the run. The Tigers came right back with a 5-1 stretch of their own to tie it up at 6-6. Tennessee State’s run continued as they opened up a 12-9 lead on a Julia Pierson kill. A Feliciano kill ended the stretch and Evansville was able to wrestle away their largest lead at 21-15 thanks to a Vazquez kill. The Tigers fought back once again, cutting the deficit to a point (24-23), but Feliciano put the finishing touches on the set with a kill that gave UE the 25-23 win.
Tennessee State regrouped and took an early 11-4 lead in the second frame. The Tiger defense forced four consecutive errors by the Aces. Their lead reached as many as seven (13-6) before the Aces rallied back. Trailing 16-12, Evansville reeled off six of the next eight points to tie the game at 18-18. After swapping the lead twice, UE grabbed the lead for good at 21-20. The set was clinched on a Patricia Joseph kill that made it another 25-23 final.
Three ties in the third game led to a 7-7 score before Tennessee State recorded four in a row to take an 11-7 edge. UE chipped away and was able to tie it up at 16-16 forcing a TSU time out. With the score knotted at 18-all, a TSU error coupled with a Feliciano kill gave the Aces a 20-18 lead, forcing the Tigers to take their final time out of the game. From there, the Aces held strong and clinched the 3-0 road sweep on Feliciano’s 15th kill of the evening. The 25-22 victory saw the Aces even their season record at 2-2.
This weekend, the Aces will be inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse for the first time this season, hosting the Dunn Hospitality Tournament. Evansville takes on Purdue Fort Wayne at 6 p.m. Friday before welcoming Eastern Illinois and Middle Tennessee State on Saturday.

University of Evansville Named #6 Best College in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report
|
|
The University of Evansville has been named the sixth best college in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Colleges Rankings. UE rose one spot overall this year and has appeared in the top 10 for more than a decade.
UE was also recognized for success in its engineering and business programs, commitment to undergraduate teaching, its work with veterans and international students, and for study abroad and social mobility.
The College of Engineering and Computer Science at UE has moved up six spots over last year and was recognized as the #19 best engineering school among small private institutions in the country.
The Schroeder School of Business was named the #4 best undergraduate business school in the country among small private institutions. UE’s accounting program was ranked #3, and finance was ranked #2 among small private colleges.
For the first time this year, UE was recognized as one of the best schools for undergraduate teaching. Schools ranked in this category are chosen for having “faculty with an unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.”
“The outstanding dedication of our faculty is no secret to our students,” said UE president Christopher M. Pietruszkiewicz. “UE professors are exceptionally devoted to student success, so it is particularly exciting to be recognized nationally for this commitment.”
The University was also recognized as the #5 Best College for Veterans in the Midwest and a Top Midwest school for International Students.
Additionally, UE was highlighted in the category, Best Study Abroad Programs to Look For. The methodology for this category states that “study abroad programs at these schools involve substantial academic work abroad for credit - a year, a semester, or an intensive experience equal to a course - and considerable interaction with the local culture.
“To be recognized on a national level in so many categories directly speaks to the caliber of the UE education and experience,” said Shane Davidson, vice president for enrollment and marketing. “We are particularly proud of the study abroad ranking, as our program at Harlaxton College is a cornerstone of the UE experience for so many of our students.”
When studying abroad at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England, UE students live alongside faculty members in a unique learning environment and are immersed in the local culture through the Meet-a-Family program. Financial aid packages also travel along with students to Harlaxton, making a semester abroad within reach for UE students of any major.
UE was also recognized as a top performing Midwest school for social mobility. This category “measures how well schools graduated students who received federal Pell Grants.” Pell Grant recipients typically come from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually, though most Pell Grant money goes to students with a total family income below $20,000.
The U.S. News & World Report rankings are designed to help prospective students and their families evaluate college choices. The Best Colleges rankings are available online at www.usnews.com/colleges and will be published in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2019 guidebook, on newsstands later this month.
