Wednesday's Andiron Lecture Moved to Smythe Lecture Hall
|
|
The Andiron Lecture planned for Wednesday, Nov. 2 has been moved to Smythe Lecture Hall (Room 170) in the Schroeder Family School of Business Administration Building. It had originally been scheduled to take place in Eykamp 252, Ridgway University Center. The 4 p.m. start time of the lecture remains the same, as does the preceding social gathering with beverages at 3:45 p.m.
Assistant Professor of Special Education Vincent Harper will be the speaker. He will be discussing “Collaborative Partnerships between Public Schools and Religious Institutions: Building Trust and Sharing Capacity.”
Harper explains that “religious and faith-based institutions provide a variety of valuable, community-based services to families, such as child care, educational programs, counseling services, and basic needs assistance such as food and clothing distribution. This presentation will examine findings from a recent study that validate the feasibility of collaborative partnerships between public schools and religious institutions as a way of improving the socioeconomic and educational outcomes of families in their shared community.”
Harper is a recent graduate of the University of Oklahoma where he earned his PhD. He has over 10 years of educational experience in K-12 education working as an elementary and special education teacher and as a school administrator. His research interests include the development of faith-based strategies for establishing community partnerships to better serve marginalized populations.
For further information, call the series coordinator M. Christine Mohn at 812-488-2585 or the College of Arts and Sciences at 812-488-2589.

Photographer on Campus
|
|
The Office of Admission will have a photographer on campus for a photo shoot, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Nov, 1, 2, and 3. UE students and faculty have always been very cooperative and accommodating during previous shoots and as a result, many great photos have been taken for UE publications. Kim McDonald will try to notify faculty in advance if photos will be taken in a particular class, however, often weather unexpectedly can force the shoot inside and it is possible that last minute requests will be made. If faculty members know that they will be giving a test or do not wish to be bothered any of these three days, they should please inform Kim McDonald at ext. 2683 and the classroom will be avoided.

Margaret McMullan Receives Indiana Authors Award
|
|
Professor of Creative Writing Margaret McMullan was awarded the 2011 Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award last Sunday at a gala dinner at the Central Library in downtown Indianapolis. Announced as the winner earlier this summer, McMullan was presented her award and $10,000 in prize money as the National Author recipient. A ten-member, statewide Award Panel selected the National and Regional winners and a winner in the third category of emerging authors from the pool of publicly nominated authors. In its third year, the Award recognizes the contributions of Indiana authors to the literary landscape in Indiana and across the nation. The Award is a program of The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation and is funded by the generosity of The Glick Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation.
At the presentation, McMullan said, “I am so pleased to be joined on stage this evening with such remarkable talent from across the state of Indiana. I know I speak for them as well when I say how honored we are to be named as this year’s award recipients. I moved to Indiana about 21 years ago to teach at the University of Evansville, and I’ve grown to love this state, its people, and its strong literary heritage. I feel privileged and humbled to be a part of tonight’s program and all that this award celebrates.”
In addition to a cash prize, each winner’s Indiana hometown public library will receive a grant of $2,500 from the Library Foundation, bringing the total cash distribution of prize money totaling $30,000.

UE Men's Soccer To Welcome Western Illinois For Senior Night Tuesday
|
|
The University of Evansville men's soccer team will play its last home match of the season Tuesday, hosting Western Illinois at Arad McCutchan Stadium for a 7 p.m. start. The Purple Aces? seniors will be honored as a part of Senior Night prior to the contest.
The Aces lead the all-time series, 4-1. In their last meeting, Western Illinois won, 3-1, in Macomb, Ill. on Sept. 19, 2010.
Western Illinois earned a 3-2 double-overtime victory on the road over the UMKC Kangaroos Saturday to capture the 2011 Summit League regular season title. The Leathernecks enter Tuesday?s contest riding a three-game win streak, including two overtime victories. Daniel Lewis (4g, 1a, 9pts), Jupic Husref (3g, 3a, 9pts), and Nathan Bruinsma (3g, 2a, 8pts) lead the Leathernecks? offense of which 11 players have found the back of the net this season. Goalkeeper Andy Ryan has played all but 90:00 minutes, recording seven shutouts, a 0.83 GAA, 68 saves, and a .850 save percentage.
Evansville comes off two straight 2-1 losses to No. 10 Indiana University (10/26) and Bradley University (10/29). On the season, junior Jesse Sharp leads Evansville with four goals, including two game-winners, seven assists, and 15 points this fall, followed by freshman Ryan Stallings with five goals, two assists and 12 points. Freshman Dylan Terry and senior Jarrett Robbins have each tallied two goals, as 16 of UE?s players have recorded points this season. Freshman goalkeeper Eric Teppen has tallied three shutouts, 60 saves, and a 1.36 GAA in net.
Falling to Bradley, 2-1, Saturday secured UE a seventh place finish in the conference standings, which also means the Aces will not be attending the conference tournament for the first time since 2005. The Aces wrap up the season, hosting Western Illinois Tuesday and then close the regular season on the road at Creighton Saturday.
Nine of UE's 15 matches this season have been decided by no more than one goal, including the Aces? last four consecutive matches.
Evansville's three senior players as well as senior support staff will be honored before Tuesday's match. Aaron Henkle ( 1g, 1a, 3pts), Tad Kreamalmeyer (1g, 1a, 3pts), and Jarrett Robbins (2g, 1a, 5pts) have all played large roles for the Aces this season and throughout their careers. As freshmen, they became the first team to be ranked among the nation's top 25 since 1996, knocking off three different nationally ranked opponents, as well as playing one of the nation's toughest non-conference schedules. As sophomores, they advanced to the Missouri Valley Conference finals. In their final two seasons, they knocked off nationally ranked opposition in the University of Washington in 2010, and the University of Memphis this fall.
