Volleyball Sweeps Past Southern Illinois
|
|
Senior Brooke Maher tied a game-high with 11 kills as the University of Evansville volleyball team cruised past Southern Illinois, 3-0, Friday evening at the Carson Center.
Maher notched 11 kills to go along with nine digs. Ellen Sawin came up just a dig short of a triple-double, tallying 15 assists, ten kills and nine digs.
The Aces (13-14, 3-9 MVC) and Salukis (9-12, 3-9 MVC) fought back and forth early in the first set as eight ties occurred leading to an 8-8 score. A service error by SIU helped UE reel off the next three points as the Aces would roll to a 17-10 advantage. Aces seniors Maher, Sawin and Kaisi Nixon notched consecutive kills to cement the lead.
After Southern Illinois scored the next five points to get within three (18-15), Evansville would wrap up the game on a 7-1 run. Sawin notched two kills and SIU made four errors over that stretch.
Jessica Whitehead, who led the Salukis with 11 kills, notched a pair early in the second frame to help her team jump to an early 5-3 lead. The Aces quickly fought back to score the next five and take an 8-5 advantage. UE’s lead would not go under three points over the remainder of the set as they would cruise to the 25-15 victory.
Set three was close early on, but another Evansville run would prove to be the difference as the Aces would finish off the sweep on the strength of another 25-15 win. With the set knotted at 4-4, UE reeled off the next five points and would continue to pull away. Maher was in a zone, notching four-consecutive kills at one point.
The offense for the Purple Aces had one of its top nights of the year, hitting .352 while recording 43 kills and holding the Salukis to 30 on the night. The defense was also stellar, limiting SIU to just a .047 attack percentage.
Evansville will have seven days off before continuing the home stand next Friday against Indiana State. The Sycamores will be at the Carson Center at 7 p.m. on Friday before Illinois State comes to town on Saturday evening for a 7 p.m. matchup.

Heck Perfect In Women's Basketball’s, 78-41, Rout Over Oakland City
|
|
Junior center Samantha Heck’s 21 points on a perfect percentage from the field, behind the arch, and at the free throw line, piloted the University of Evansville women’s basketball team to a 78-41 exhibition win over Oakland City University Saturday afternoon at the Ford Center. The game marked the first under the direction of first-year head coach Oties Epps and the first athletic event in the brand new downtown Ford Center.
Heck went 7-for-7 from the field, 3-for-3 from three-point range, and 4-for-4 from the line, while also ripping down nine boards in 25 minutes of play. Junior Briyana Blair also reached double figures, tallying 10 points on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor and 4-for-4 performance at the charity stripe, while also adding six assists. Senior Staci Gillum and sophomore Hannah Weedman each added eight points for the Aces.
The Lady Oaks scored the first basket of the game, but it was the last lead the visitors would have, as Evansville went on a 26-7 run for a commanding 17 point lead at the 8:42 mark on junior Meagan Collins’ layup.
The Aces stepped up the defense and pressed down the pedal in the remaining minutes of the half, building a 31 point half time advantage, 45-14. In the 16-1 run, over the final 4:13 minutes of the period, it was a team effort as five UE players scored at least one basket and went 5-for-5 from the free throw line as a squad.
Evansville shot 65.4 percent (17-26) from the field in the first half, and 4-7 from beyond the arch. UE’s defense held Oakland City to 6-of-30 shooting and 1-of-10 from three.
The Aces never looked back in the second stanza, sinking their first five shots from the floor and built as much as a 44 point lead at the 2:31 mark on sophomore Katie Ellerson’s layup.
In the game, Evansville shot 51.9 percent (28-54) from the field, 41.2 percent (7-17) from three, and 83.3 percent (15-18) from the free throw line.
Chelsea Jone led the Lady Oaks with 12 points and three steals as Oakland City forced Evansville into 20 turnovers in the game. However, OCU also had 21 turnovers themselves. Tallying 13 steals as a squad, senior Chelsea Falkenstein and junior Jordan Lewis led UE with three swipes apiece.
The Aces open the regular season Nov. 11 on the road at Murray State. Evansville does not return home until Tuesday, Nov. 29 when UE hosts Ball State.

Aces Basketball Cruises To 81-52 Win Over DePauw
|
|
The University of Evansville men’s basketball team officially opened the Ford Center on Saturday with an 81-52 win over DePauw in exhibition action.
Senior Kenny Harris and junior Ned Cox led the way for the Aces with 13 points apiece. Denver Holmes and Colt Ryan each finished with 12 points while Jordan Jahr chipped in 11.
“It was good to finally get out there and play,” Aces head coach Marty Simmons said. “I think our team got better this week, we improved in some areas, but we have to learn from this and have another good week of practice.”
Evansville got off to a hot start, scoring the first six points of the game and would drain five of its first seven shots to open up a 10-2 advantage just three minutes in. DePauw responded with a quick 5-1 spurt to get within four points as Michael Wilkison capped it off with a layup to make it 11-7, but UE would quickly regroup in a big way.
A pair of free throws by Jordan Jahr sent the Purple Aces on a 9-0 run to give them their first double-digit lead of the game. Five different Aces scored in the run, which would prove to be a game changer as the lead would never be in single digits over the remainder of the contest.
The lead kept growing over the final minutes of the period as a layup by Ryan in the closing seconds gave UE its largest lead of the half at 42-18. The Batesville, Ind. native led all players with 11 points in the opening stanza hitting 5-of-7 shots and contributed in all aspects, dishing out three assists and grabbing three boards in the period.
After leading 42-18 at the break, the Aces kept the heat on the Tigers early in the second period. A bucket by Denver Holmes finished off a 15-6 run to open the latter half and give the Aces what would be their largest lead of the game at 33 points (57-24). DePauw would get within as few as 22 points with five minutes remaining, but Evansville would be able to stand its ground and come away with the 81-52 victory.
Ryan finished 5-8 from the floor while Cox shot an efficient 6-of-11 as UE finished the night shooting 57.7%. The defense was stout as it held the Tigers to just 14-of-45 shooting.
Evansville crashed the boards, finishing with a 36-23 rebounding advantage. Jahr and Troy Taylor led UE with seven apiece.
Michael Wilkison was the top scorer for DePauw, tallying 12 points. He was followed by Barry Flynn, who hit 4-7 shots on his way to an 11-point outing.
The Aces will return to practice this week before taking on the University of Illinois-Springfield on Friday, Nov. 4 in the their final preseason tune-up. The final exhibition is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Ford Center.

UE Men's Soccer Tripped Up By Bradley, 2-1
|
|
The visiting Bradley Braves scored two second-half goals Saturday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium, topping the University of Evansville men’s soccer team, 2-1. The loss drops the Purple Aces’ record to 5-9-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference, eliminating UE from MVC Tournament contention. Bradley improved to 11-4-2 on the season and 3-2 in the Valley.
In the first half, the Aces held Bradley to just one shot, outshooting the Braves, 9-1 and 4-0 on goal.
Evansville took the lead in the 25th minute when junior Jesse Sharp sent a cross from the left side of the field to Alex Kapsalis on the right. Kapsalis trapped the high pass and sent it into the back left side of the net.
Bradley tied it up in the 52nd minute on Wojcik Wojciech’s tip-in that bounced around the box after Desmond Campbell sent a cross from the left side.
Mach Keith scored the Braves’ game-winning goal on a blast from just over 30 yards out on the left side of the field. The ball sailed high and out of the reach of 6’4 goalkeeper Eric Teppen into the back of the net.
In the match, Evansville outshot BU, 17-6 and 5-2 on goal. Sharp led UE with four shots, two on goal, followed by freshman Dylan Terry’s three shots.
Teppen did not record a save in the match, while Braves’ goalie, Brian Billings, tallied four.
The Aces play their last home match of the season Tuesday versus Western Illinois at 7 p.m. Seniors Tad Kreamalmeyer, Jarrett Robbins, and Aaron Henkle will be honored as a part of Senior Day.

UE Women's Soccer Advances to MVC Semifinals With Shutout Over Drake
|
|
Just 2:48 minutes into Sunday afternoon’s match at Arad McCutchan Stadium, sophomore forward Kaitlin Robinett scored the game-winning goal, as the University of Evansville women’s soccer team shut out the visiting Drake Bulldogs in the opening round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The No. 4 seeded Purple Aces (4-11-4) will take on No. 1 Illinois State in the semifinals Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.
In the third minute of play, a corner kick taken by sophomore Stephanie Thompson led to a jumble in the box. After a few exchanges forced goalkeeper Kalena Litch to favor the left post, Robinett was able to find the back right corner of the net for the lone goal of the contest.
Evansville dominated the opening period, taking six shots, while not allowing the Bulldogs a single attempt on goal.
In the second half, Drake’s offense picked up, recording a 12-1 shot advantage, while also taking six shots on goal. However, Chaviel Harrison and the UE defense made all the stops to preserve the shutout.
The Bulldogs’ best chance to score occurred with 2:10 remaining in the match. Drake’s push ahead made for a one-on-one situation, but Harrison’s aggressive play paid off, as she came sliding out to the top of the penalty box to stop the breakaway and secure the ball.
Harrison finished with six saves in the match and the shutout, her fifth of the year.
Robinett and junior Kristen Davis led UE with two shots on goal. In addition, Thompson and junior Olivia Robinson (penalty kick) each added one.

Tickets to the UE vs. Butler game are free, while tickets to the UE vs. IU game are $10 each.
