The University of Evansville Fall Conference is today - Tuesday, August 14 - in Eykamp Hall, Room 251, Ridgway University Center at 1:30 p.m. All faculty, staff, and administrators are invited to the dessert reception to kick off the conference at 12:30 p.m. in the Class of ’59 Gallery and Lounge.

Additionally, the Office of Academic Affairs is hosting Faculty Fall Concurrent Sessions on Wednesday, August 15 from 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. in the Schroeder School of Business Building, and guided tours of the Stone Family Center for Health Sciences from 3:30-4:30 p.m. All faculty, staff, and administrators are welcome to attend the Concurrent Sessions and to go on the tours.

The University of Evansville will dedicate its new Interfaith Peace Bell today - Thursday, August 9 - at 3:00 p.m. between Ridgway University Center and the Bower-Suhrheinrich Library. Evansville’s interfaith community will participate in the event, which is open to the public.

UE’s International Peace Pole will also be rededicated at its new location near the west side of Memorial Plaza. The peace pole was originally dedicated to the University of Evansville by the International Students Club in 2002.

With the installation of the Interfaith Peace Bell, the University has created a new focal point on campus dedicated to peace and reconciliation.

“The bell is a symbol of the University’s commitment to making the world a more peaceful, understanding, and compassionate place,” explained Tammy Gieselman, University Chaplain. “It will ring to commemorate significant campus and community events and will symbolize harmony and goodwill at UE. The Peace Bell will be a constant reminder for us to work for peace together, as a campus community.”

The bell was cast at the White Chapel Bell Foundry in London, England. An appropriate choice as the University of Evansville’s Harlaxton College is located in Grantham, England.

“UE’s Interfaith Peace Bell will also serve as a visual and aural symbol of the University's strong connection with England and our beloved Harlaxton College,” noted Gieselman.

UE’s Interfaith Peace Bell is a copper and tin cast, 24¼” diameter bell and weighs 322 pounds. It is accurately and harmonically tuned on the five-tone principal to note F. Its deadstock is made from Iroko, a large hardwood from the west coast of tropical Africa. One side of the bell is inscribed "Yearn for Peace,” and the other side reads “Work for Peace.” The bell’s pedestal is made of solid granite, weighing 8,247 pounds and is modeled after UE’s Olmsted Administration Hall bell tower.

UE’s Peace Bell was one of the last bells to be cast at the historic White Chapel Bell Foundry before it closed permanently in May 2017. It was Britain’s oldest manufacturing company, stretching back to 1570. It was responsible for many acclaimed bells worldwide, including London’s Big Ben, Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell, and bells for the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. The foundry also made a tribute bell one year after 9/11, the Bell of Hope, as a gift from the people of London to the people of New York City.

On February 24, 2017, a casting ceremony for UE’s bell was carried out at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Witnessing this ceremony were Harlaxton College principal Gerald Seaman and spouse, Patricia Vilches; Ian Welsh, vice principal for business and technology, Harlaxton College; Megan Janasiewicz, director of student development, Harlaxton College; Harlaxton students Rebecca Clark, Ahmad Ismaiel, and Sara Cannaday; and Tamara Gieselman, University Chaplain.

The following Monday, February 27, the bell was consecrated by the interfaith community in London. Those who participated were Katherine Baxter, Wesley’s Chapel; David Chapman, West London Synagogue; Gieselman; John Heyderman, Beit Klal Yisrael; Ishaque Uddin, East London Mosque; and Aslam Uddin, East London Mosque.

The United Way Day of Caring will be Friday, September 7. This year, UE will be partnering with the local council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Buffalo Trace Council. This location is located just down the road off the Lloyd Expressway (behind the State Hospital).

Johnson Controls is on campus conducting the annual fire alarm system testing. As each building is tested the alarm will intermittently go off. (Since this is just a test of the alarm, there is no need to leave the building when the alarm sounds.) Physical plant and security will know on a daily basis the buildings being tested. The testing will be done between 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Testing should be completed by Tuesday, August 21. Items should be matted, framed, and suitable to hanging in the Krannert Gallery. Pictures up to 16” x 20” in size may be submitted.

Robert Baines, assistant professor of English, gave a lecture at the Working Men's Institute Museum and Library in New Harmony on August 7. The lecture was organized by the Friends of the Working Men's Institute and was titled "Finnegans Wake: How to Read."

Michael Roscoe, UE’s PA department chair/program director and IAPA president-elect, recently served as a facilitator/faculty for PAEA’s Program Directors 101 Workshop. Thirty-four new program directors and associate PDs, most with fewer than two years’ experience, convened outside of Washington, DC. This popular annual workshop, facilitated by four experienced PDs and department chairs, attracted members from 32 PA programs in 18 states.

Heartfelt condolences to Joan Fedor-Bassemier on the passing of her husband Edgar E. Bassemier on Saturday evening, August 4. Visitation will be at Ziemer's Funeral Home, 626 North First Avenue on Wednesday, August 8 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and Thursday, August 9 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held at Ziemer's Funeral Home at 10:00 on Thursday morning. 

Old National Bank and the University of Evansville have enjoyed a long and successful relationship.  Today, the partnership reaches a new level with the formation of the Walter McCarty Leadership Academy powered by Old National Bank.

The academy is an initiative that will benefit the Evansville community in many ways.  The primary goal of the academy is to develop leadership skills and provide growth opportunities through unique experiences for the participants and their families.

One of those experiences will be through the ONB Community Section.  For each men’s and women’s basketball home game, 50 complimentary seats behind the visitor’s bench will be given out through the academy.  It will provide those in attendance with the chance to enjoy the game from a premium section while also being able to share the experience with Purple Aces head coaches Walter McCarty and Matt Ruffing following each home game.

“Old National is happy to serve as a University of Evansville partner and truly honored to bring the vision of the Walter McCarty Leadership Academy to life - supporting our community’s greatest asset, our youth,” said Old National Region CEO Sara Miller. “Through educational programming and unique experiences focused on leadership and life skills development, we hope to create, strengthen and empower the next generation of leaders.”

Being a native of Evansville, the opportunity to give back his home town is very meaningful to McCarty.

“It is an honor to team up with Old National Bank to form the Walter McCarty Leadership Academy,” McCarty said.  “This is a way for us to really give back to the community while having a positive impact on the lives of the youth in our town.”

“I am very excited about the formation of the ONB Community Section.  Being located behind the visitor’s bench, this group has a chance to make a difference during the game and provide a great advantage for our team,” McCarty continued.

The continued partnership between Old National Bank and UE is not limited to just the academy.  Beginning in 2018, for every 3-pointer made by the Aces men’s and women’s squads, Old National Bank will donate $3 to the academy.  This venture will be called the “ONB Three”.

ONB is also set to become the presenting sponsor of the Purple Aces Radio Network.  In what will be called the “Old National Bank Radio Network”, the newly-established partnership will see UE men’s basketball games broadcasted on five affiliates in the area.  The flagship station will be 107.1 WJPS in Evansville while WAOV 1450/97.7/97.3 in Vincennes, WRCY 1590/106.7 in Mt. Vernon, WROY 1460/92.1 in Carmi, Illinois and WYFX 106.7 in Evansville will also carry broadcasts.

“We are very excited about the commitment that Old National Bank has made to the University of Evansville and our athletic programs,” UE President Chris Pietruszkiewicz explained.  “This relationship impacts our entire university and we are honored to have Old National Bank set the precedent for how our university is represented on and off the court.”

This relationship will be managed by Learfield’s Purple Aces Sports Properties, the university’s athletic multimedia rights holder.
