* Spring Healthy Behavior Challenge

Sign-up today for the Spring Healthy Behavior Challenge. Earn an additional $150 in HRA credits upon successful completion. * UE plans benefit reading of Vagina Monologues

A benefit reading of The Vagina Monologues is set for Thursday, March 15, at the University of Evansville. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. in room 126 in Hyde Hall, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for the general public and $7 for students.

Proceeds will be donated to the Albion Fellows Bacon Center in Evansville and the V-Day Rise 2018 campaign. The Albion Fellows Bacon Center works to prevent domestic and sexual violence in the community and offers services to empower victims. V-Day is a global activist movement working for an end to violence against women and girls.

The event is being sponsored by UE4SHE, the Office of Diversity, and the Black Student Union at the University of Evansville.

* Heads up - UE Gives Back Spring is coming!

UE Gives Back Spring, a campus wide day of volunteering, will take place on Saturday, March 24. If you want to give back to the Evansville community, you can sign up for a volunteer activity on Get Connected. The deadline to sign up is March 20, and a free T-shirt is provided!

* Immigration Panel Discussion: Thursday in Neu Chapel

The Neu Chapel is excited to partner with the BRIDGE group (Building Respect and Integrity in Diverse Greater Evansville) in hosting an interfaith panel discussion on immigration in the United States. The panel will consist of Royal Gearhart, a US immigration attorney, local business owner Abraham Brown, and UE's own Rachel Brown from the Department of Philosophy and Religion and Mohammad Azarian from the Department of Mathematics.

This event will focus on the current immigration system, the "push and pull" that drives immigration, and what we as a community and persons of faith can do to take action on behalf of our global neighbors.

This Interfaith Immigration Panel Discussion will be this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Neu Chapel. All are welcome and invited to attend!

* UE hosting day-long political science mini-conference - March 20

A partnership between the University of Evansville’s Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series and UE’s Department of Law, Politics, and Society will bring to the community a series of stimulating conversations about the contemporary political scene and the challenges it presents. Scheduled events highlighted below will culminate in an evening conversation with Former Indiana Senator Richard Lugar and President Thomas A. Kazee. The day-long series of events are in recognition of Kazee’s career as both president and political scientist.

The following events are free and open to the public on Tuesday, March 20:

State of our Union: Insights from Political Science – An American Politics Panel Discussion
2:00 p.m., Eykamp Hall, Room 252, Ridgway University Center, University of Evansville

• Dr. Robert Dion, Chair, Department of Law, Politics and Society, University of Evansville
• Dr. Marvin Overby, Professor, American Politics, University of Missouri
• Dr. Patrick Sellers, Professor, Political Science, Davidson College

Kazee will moderate the panel discussion and contribute his own personal insights as a political scientist. Professors Overby and Sellers are well-regarded scholars of American politics as well as former students of Kazee.

State of our Union: Making Sense of Current Affairs
7:00 p.m., Eykamp Hall, Ridgway University Center, University of Evansville

A keynote conversation between Senator Lugar and President Kazee for the Spring 2018 Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series. Seats may be reserved online

While on campus, Senator Lugar will also engage UE students in an invitation-only session titled, “State of our Union: Leaders of Tomorrow – A Student Conversation with Senator Lugar.”

Other events include a conversation between President Kazee and University of Southern Indiana President Linda Bennett at the Rotary Club of Evansville’s noon luncheon.  The focus will be “The Changing Landscape in Higher Education.” Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke will moderate the conversation. The Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series was made possible in 1997 through an endowment from the late Patricia H. Snyder, trustee and longtime friend of University, to bring speakers or performers of renown to Evansville at no cost to the public.

* March 20 Snyder Lecture Series to feature Senator Lugar and President Kazee

The University of Evansville will present a keynote conversation between former Indiana Senator Richard Lugar and UE President Thomas A. Kazee for the Spring 2018 Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series on March 20 at 7:00 p.m.

The conversation, titled “State of our Union: Making Sense of Current Affairs,” will be held in Eykamp Hall within Ridgway University Center on the UE campus and doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

This event is free and open to the public and guests will be seated on a first-come first-served basis. Reserve your seat online here. 

This event is presented in partnership with the University of Evansville Department of Law, Politics, and Society as part of an all-day series of current events and political science events and discussions, in honor of the retirement of Dr. Thomas Kazee and his academic career as a political scientist.

* Rosary Prayer at 10:00 a.m. on Thursdays

The Newman Club will be offering a 20-minute rosary prayer every Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the Center for Academic Advising in the Clifford Memorial Library. Students and faculty are welcome. For more information, contact Olivia at ov4@evansville.edu.

The newest issue of the UE Magazine is now available to view online. Articles include in-depth features with President Tom Kazee and First Lady Sharon Kazee, an update on former UE president Stephen Jennings, campus news, Aces in Action, alumni spotlights, class notes, and more.

Hard copies will arrive in campus offices and alumni mailboxes this week. For additional copies, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations.

* Student Health Center closed during spring break

The Student Health Center will be closed during spring break. Normal hours on operation will resume on Monday, March 12, from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. We want to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable break!

* New UE Habitat Barn Blitz Build Days added

There are two new component building days for UE Habitat Barn Blitz. On Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10 from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., students, faculty, staff, and alumni are welcome to come and help build components for the backyard barns. Building will be taking place at 531 Rotherwood Avenue (next to the Center for Adult Education).

* Malfatti publishes Handel article

Associate professor of music and director of choral activities Dennis Malfatti’s article on Handel’s Saul is the featured cover article for the April 2018 edition of the Choral Journal. The Choral Journal goes to all members of the American Choral Directors Association, which has about 22,000 members.

 

Athletics

* Evansville earns fifth-place finish at Lonnie Barton Invitational

Opening the day in sixth, the University of Evansville women's golf team recorded a second -round score of 317 to move up a spot and finish in fifth at the Lonnie Barton Invitational in St. Augustine, Florida, at the LPGA Country Club.

The Purple Aces opened the tournament with a 330 in the first round, but bounced back with a 317 on the second day to push Evansville into the top five with a team-total of 647. Fairleigh Dickinson captured the team title with a two-round 618 (311-307) finishing with a 17-stroke advantage over second-place finishing North Carolina A&T.

Pacing the Aces was Madison Chaney who moved up three spots on the final day with a second-round 78 for an invitational total of 157 (79-78). Sophia Rohleder held firm in a tie for 12th as Rohleder followed up her opening-round 79 with an 80 on the second day for a total of 159.

Just a stroke behind Rohleder, Minka Gill carded a two-day total of 160 (84-76) with an eight-stroke improvement in the final round to move Gill into a tie for 17th. Following Gill were Lexie Sollman and Giulia Mallman who finished within a pair of strokes of one another. Sollman carded a 10-stroke improvement on the final day as Sollman finished in a tie for 49th with a two-round total of 176 while Mallman finished in a tie for 54th with a total of 178 (88-90).

For the third time this spring, the men's and women's teams will both travel to Sevierville, Tennessee, to compete in the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate from March 18-20.

 
* Aces earn top 10 finish at Lonnie Barton Invitational

The University of Evansville men's golf team grabbed a ninth-place finish at the Lonnie Barton Invitational in St. Augustine, Fla. held at the LPGA Country Club.

After carding a team-score of 306 in the first round, the Purple Aces recorded a 334 on the second day for a team total of 640. All 14 teams in the invitational field struggled in the second round as none of the competing teams improved their opening round score in their second round. Bethune-Cookman jumped from second to capture the team title, firing a 294 on the second day for a two-day total of 587 (293-294).

Leading the way for the Aces were Tyler Gray and Noah Reese who each finished the two-day tournament with totals of 158. Gray opened the invitational with a 74 before recording an 84 on the second day, while Reese tallied a 77 on Monday, following up with an 81 in the final round.

Following Gray and Reese were Spencer Wagner in a tie for 47th with two-round total of 160 (79-81) and Matthew Ladd finished in a tie for 63rd with a 166 (76-90) while Cameron Weyer carded a two-day 172 (84-88).

Jessie Brumley led the way for the Aces who competed individually with a 162 (80-82) as Brumley finished in a tie for 47th. One of the lone golfers to improve his score from the first round to the second round, Robert Waggoner tied for 57th with a two-day total of 165 (83-82). The final individual for the Aces was Gabe Rohleder who finished in a tie for 67th with a 168 (82-86).

The Aces take a week off from competition before competing in the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tennessee, from March 18-20.
