There will be a Hurricane Harvey response call-out campus meeting Friday, September 1, at noon. The meeting will be in Grabill Lounge, located in the basement of Neu Chapel. With news of the devastation in Texas still coming in, we know this will be a long-term national relief effort. The Indiana Music Education Association (IMEA) will be hosting the Southern Indiana Symposium & Clinic, a full-bodied professional development event for educators, at the University of Evansville. This year’s event will take place on Thursday, August 31 and offer sessions for all levels of music educators in band, orchestra, choral and general music. Featured sessions include “Bring Your Men”, a choral/vocal workshop bringing middle school and high school male choral singers to campus to work with Dan Anderson of Anderson University and author of choral methods published by Hal Leonard. Additional clinicians leading sessions for choral educators are Angela Hampton and David Stone.

Joani Brandon, music education faculty member at Anderson University, will be leading general music sessions including Folk Songs and Dances from around the World, First Steps of Music and Music Activities for Early Elementary, Exploring Conversational Solfege and Songs and Games for Music Literacy, Drumming in the Classroom-Activities that Work!, and Circle the State with Song Reading Session/working with Elementary School aged voices.

Instrumental music sessions for band feature masterclasses by University of Evansville faculty on woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Orchestra sessions include: Setting up Instruments for Success, Emergency Repair Strategies, What to do When: Before the Method Book, Athletes with Instruments- Movement in String Playing, Being Resourceful: Pedagogy from the Best in the Field.

Featured clinicians for the orchestra sessions are Sheryl Schuster, fine arts specialist, orchestra, coordinator, The Spark Project and director, EVSC Middle and High School Honors Orchestra, Carol Dallinger, professor of violin/viola at the University of Evansville, coordinator, UE Suzuki Violin Program and violin teacher trainer for the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and John Rihani, string specialist at Paige’s Music, Indianapolis.

The Symposium will take place in Krannert Fine Arts Building beginning with registration at 8:00 a.m. and concluding at 4:00 p.m. This event is open to both IMEA members as well as non-members. For more information go to: music.evansville.edu.

The work of six fiber artists will be featured in an exhibit at the University of Evansville in September and October. The exhibit titled "Fibervisions" will be on display in UE’s Melvin Peterson Gallery from September 11-October 22. There will be a reception for the artists on Thursday, September 14 at 6:30 p.m. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

The artists whose work will be on display are Martha Aguilera, Erin Bowen, Teresa Greer, Karen Hampton, Dawn Murtaugh, and Laura Foster Nicholson.

The exhibit is supported in part by the UE Friends of Art.

The University of Evansville Women's Soccer team has made an alteration to its weekend schedule due to inclement weather in the forecast.

Originally scheduled for Friday at 1:30 p.m., the Purple Aces will now play the University of Illinois on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at Arad McCutchan Stadium

On Tuesday, August 29, an e-mail from Workplace Answers was sent to the campus community. The email contained a link to a Title IX module training. The REQUIRED training is an educational opportunity to learn more about Title IX and how to report instances of sexual misconduct, harassment, and discrimination. Per the form letter located inside the module, Dr. Kazee delegated the training to all employees and students.

Please note: active shooter was added to the subject line by mistake.

The link will be available for the next 30 days. If you haven’t taken the training within two weeks, Workplace Answers will e-mail a reminder to you.

On average, the training takes 30-45 minutes. You can stop and start at your convenience. At the culmination of a three-month project, UE Libraries has begun the slow rollout of an updated library system and catalog. This is the first major change to the library system since 2001. It is called QUEST.

You can find out more about QUEST on its online site. The opening page explains what the new system offers campus researchers. We invite all library users to review the introductory information and to try out the new QUEST service.

Welcome back, everyone! We will open the Writing Center on Monday, September 11, and our peer tutors look forward to working with you on all aspects of academic writing in all disciplines.

How to use the Writing Center:

• The Writing Center will be open from Monday, September 11 to Wednesday, December 6.
• Hours are Monday-Thursday, from noon–5:00 p.m. and 7:00– 9:00 p.m., and Friday, from 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
• The Writing Center is located in the Clifford Library, Room 153, on the circle next to the Koch Center for Engineering and Science.
• The Writing Center’s Acelink webpage has many valuable resources including linked documents on citation and grammar.
• The Writing Center’s Facebook page [UE Writing Center] also has writing links, vocabulary help, and other general academic writing support.

Making an appointment is really easy!

• Go to:  Acelink…Areas…Writing Center…Appointments…Create an Appointment. Register for an account - or sign in if you have used the Writing Center before - and you can then access the center from any mobile device to schedule or cancel a session.
• This website manages your appointments, cancellations, and reports. You will receive an email or text reminder before your appointment and your professor will receive feedback afterward from the tutor who worked with you.

How to prepare for your appointment:

• Bring the assignment (writing prompt) or draft of your paper with you to your appointment.
• Prepare questions ahead of time for your tutor so you can get the most out of a session. For example, “Can you help me to see if my thesis statement is clear?”
• Plan to visit the Writing Center well in advance of an assignment due date. If you come in the day an assignment is due, you may not have enough time to make the revisions discussed during a session. Seems obvious, but…
• Arrive a few minutes early for appointments and don’t be late. If another student is waiting, that student will be helped first if you are over five minutes late.

Students, faculty, administrators, and staff who purchase the State of Indiana UE specialty license plate will receive a $25 discount off the UE parking permit fee for 2017-18.

If the vehicle registration is good through 2018, you pay $25 for a permit. Bring the vehicle registration form with you to the Office of Safety and Security. If the vehicle registration expires later in 2017, you pay $50. Once it is renewed, bring the vehicle registration form to Safety and Security for a credit of $25.

Permits are on sale in the Office of Safety and Security, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Vehicle registration and specialty plate purchase are handled through the state. Visit the BMV or purchase or renew a UE plate online at the BMV website.

After pair of victories to open the regular season, the University of Evansville Men's Soccer team swept the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards, it was announced in a release Tuesday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Ian McGrath was named MVC Offensive Player of the Week and senior goalkeeper Matthew Keller was selected as MVC Defensive Player of the Week.

McGrath, a native of New Lenox, Illinois, recorded two goals, both game-winners, and a pair of assists in the Aces' season-opening wins. In UE's 9-0 victory over Anderson, McGrath opened the match with a goal in the 11th minute before assisting on two other goals. On Sunday, the senior scored the lone goal of the match on a long-range shot from the midfield stripe. McGrath earned national recognition as his game-winner against Marshall was named the No. 8 play on SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays.

A native of Carmel, Indiana, Keller provided a steady force for the Aces in goal on the opening weekend of the season. Keller earned the victory against Anderson (Ind.) making one save in 55 minutes of action. Against Marshall, the senior held the Herd at bay, earning the win and making a pair of saves. The wins mark the fifth and sixth victories in Keller's Aces career.

The honors are Keller and McGrath's first weekly conference awards in their careers.

The Player of the Week awards are the first for the Aces since Zac Blaydes captured Offensive Player of the Week honors October 31, 2016.

The Aces return home for the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic on Friday and Sunday at Arad McCutchan Stadium. The classic features UE, Bradley, Northern Illinois, and Milwaukee. The Aces take on Milwaukee at 7:30 p.m. Friday before challenging NIU at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

University of Evansville student Trevor Lax recently completed training in Smart Tech Launch – a coding program for liberal arts students. Independent Colleges of Indiana and Eleven Fifty Academy partnered to create Smart Launch Tech as a way to marry the technical skills of coding with the problem-solving approach of a liberal arts education.

Lax, who studies economics and cognitive science at UE, was among the first cohort of students from ICI private colleges to complete Smart Tech Launch’s inaugural program.

He and the other 14 students in the cohort learned the basics of HTML, CSS, and Java Script. They completed assignments demonstrating badge competencies and compiled an e-portfolio, presented at the end of the program. Each participant earned the industry- and state-recognized Gold Badge Certification from Eleven Fifty, located at Launch Fishers. 

In addition to coding, students were exposed to the wide range of career possibilities within the tech field, including project and marketing management, data analysis, compliance, security, and design. In addition to classroom instruction, the students made field trips to Indianapolis tech businesses, speaking with their leaders and employees and gaining exposure to the tech working environment and protocols.

Students also had the opportunity to interact with the Indy Tech Fellows, new graduates in a two-year Tech Point program to place talent with leading companies, fast tracking careers and contributing to the Indianapolis community.

ICI is a nonprofit association representing the 30 private, nonprofit colleges and universities in the Hoosier state. Eleven Fifty Academy, a nonprofit dedicated to producing technology and talent, provided the funding and in-kind services for this proof-of-concept pilot. Sustainability planning is now under way. 

Professor Katie Darby Mullins' story, "How to Become a Tiger," was nominated for a Best of the Net award by The Rumpus.

Amber Pouliot, British Studies professor at Harlaxton, recently presented a paper on contemporary arts and Bronte biography at the British Association for Victorian Studies annual conference at Bishop Grosseteste.
