Purple Aces to play at New Mexico
|
|
The Missouri Valley Conference/Mountain West Challenge is back in 2016-17 as the University of Evansville Men’s Basketball team will travel to New Mexico for a contest on Wednesday, November 29. It will mark the first-ever meeting on the hardwood between the two programs.
All 10 games in the series will take place within a six-day span in late November/early December. The agreement between the Mountain West and Missouri Valley conferences is in the third year of a four-year term.
This past year, the Mountain West Conference and Missouri Valley Conference split the 10-game series, 5-5. The MW has an all-time series edge of 3-1-2 in six previous Challenge seasons, which includes an overall advantage of 33-22 in games played in association with the series.
Evansville has a 2-3 record in the Challenge Series, but has won the last two games. In 2015, the Aces pulled off an impressive 85-77 victory at Fresno State before defeating Boise State by a final of 72-67 last season.
“The MVC/Mountain West Challenge is a great opportunity for schools from both leagues,” UE head coach Marty Simmons said. “It gives our fans the chance to watch us face teams that we would not usually have the chance to play while giving our student-athletes and program a non-conference game against great competition.”
New Mexico is coming off of a 17-14 campaign in 2016-17 while going 10-8 in conference play. The Lobos boast one of the top home atmospheres in the nation at WisePies Arena aka The Pit. The venue has been rated as one of the top in college basketball by NCAA.com, USA Today, Sports Illustrated, and FoxSports.com.
The Challenge Series features head-to-head competition between 10 Mountain West and 10 Missouri Valley teams annually, with each conference hosting five games apiece each season.
Annual matchups for teams in the Challenge Series will be based upon factors including the previous year’s achievements, records and RPI rankings, as well as projected rankings/strength of teams in the upcoming season, based on composite sources. Each season will be considered separately in terms of matchups, therefore, games from the previous year’s Challenge Series may not be returned.
Television rights for each Challenge Series contest will be controlled by the home team’s conference television agreement, which will dictate the distribution of the game and all related matters, including tip times.
2017 Challenge Schedule

Aces to open versus Fresno State
|
|
Another high-profile tournament is on tap this season for the University of Evansville Men’s Basketball team as they head to Cancun, Mexico, for the 2017 Cancun Challenge.
Contests in Cancun will take place on Tuesday, November 21 and Wednesday, November 22. The Purple Aces open play on Tuesday against Fresno State and will face either George Mason or Louisiana Tech in the final game. CBS Sports Network will carry both games.
“We are very excited to have the opportunity to participate in the Cancun Challenge,” Aces head coach Marty Simmons said. “The tournament features some great teams that we have a ton of respect for. Playing in the Cancun Challenge will give us the chance to take on some great competition and help to prepare us for the Missouri Valley Conference schedule.”
Evansville’s first opponent is Fresno State, a squad the Aces have a great deal of familiarity with. UE is 4-1 versus the Bulldogs while winning meetings in 2014 and 2015. The first contest took place in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Florida. When UE took a 58-52 win in 2014. A year later, the teams faced off in Fresno in the MVC/Mountain West Challenge as Evansville came away with an 85-77 win.
The second opponent will be George Mason or Louisiana Tech. UE has never taken on either school on the hardwood.
Stay tuned to GoPurpleAces.com and the UE Athletics social media accounts for more updates on the 2017-18 men’s basketball season.

Medical Spanish at UE starting Fall 2017
|
|
If you are a student in nursing, public health, health services administration, exercise science, education, nutrition, biology, chemistry, the physicians assistant program, or the pre-professional health sciences (such as medicine, optometry, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, clinical psychology) consider adding a medical Spanish minor or a Spanish major with a specialization in medical Spanish. The Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures will be offering both programs beginning Fall 2017.
The requirements for the medical Spanish minor are 18 credit hours, which include the following specific courses: Spanish 211,212, 311, 316, 325, and 350. The Spanish major with a specialization in medical Spanish requires the same SPAN courses previously mentioned in addition to FL 420 (an internship abroad), and one of the following courses: COMM 410, EDUC 385, HSA 405, PH 190, PH 195, SOC 337. Please note that FL 420 may be substituted by one of the aforementioned courses.
Both the medical Spanish minor and the Spanish major with a specialization in medical Spanish cover medical sciences terminology and concepts, cultural content of Hispanics in the U.S. and of Spanish speaking countries, as well as an introduction to interpreting. Consequently, students are better prepared for careers in medical fields in the US and abroad.
