Sharon Kazee to Speak at Andiron Lecture
|
|
Dr. Sharon Kazee will be the speaker at the Andiron Lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 5 in Eykamp 252, Ridgway University Center. The lecture is at 4 p.m., with a social gathering with beverages at 3:45 p.m. Her topic will be “Arts for Our Sake: The Arts Imperative in Today’s Educational Climate.”
Sharon Kazee earned her PhD in educational administration at the University of South Carolina. Before coming to Evansville, she served as the dean and vice president for arts and academics at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, as fine arts coordinator with Greenville County Schools in South Carolina, and curriculum specialist for performing arts with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina. She recently received the Individual Research Initiative Award presented by the Arts Schools Network. Through her active community involvement, she is an advocate for arts and education initiatives.
In today’s educational environment, where uniform curriculum standards and high-stakes accountability are center stage, much of the recent research supporting arts education focuses on the extrinsic benefits of studying the arts. These studies indicate the arts are a vehicle for improvement in areas beyond themselves, such as academic performance, attendance, and behavior. In contrast, this presentation will focus on the intrinsic value of the arts and why they are essential components of our students’ educational experience. Kazee will discuss her research related to musical expression and the current challenges encountered by arts advocates and educators.
For further information, call the series coordinator M. Christine Mohn at 812-488-2585 or the College of Arts at 812-488-2589.

Clark Kimberling
|
|
Clark Kimberling, professor of mathematics, has two recent research publications. “Beatty Sequences and Wythoff Sequences, Generalized,” appears in the August 2011 issue of The Fibonacci Quarterly, a number-theory journal . The second article, “Mean Distances on a Sphere,” appears in Elemente der Mathematik, published by the Swiss Mathematical Society, vol. 66 (2011) 63-73. It concerns average distances among points on a sphere of radius 1. Among the findings are constants associated with the five Platonic solids. The simplest case is for a cube: the average distance from a random point on the unit sphere to the nearest vertex of the inscribed cube is approximately 0.4907564. The article also considers spherical caps and zones. For example, on the earth’s surface, the “average latitude” for the northern hemisphere is about 32.7 degrees – a belt around the globe, passing close to Ft. Worth, Texas and San Diego, California, and passing right through Nazareth, Israel.

Lipscomb Defeats Evansville
|
|
Senior Ellen Sawin recorded a career-high 19 digs, but a strong offensive performance by Lipscomb saw four players record double-digit kills as the Bisons topped the Purple Aces volleyball team, 3-1, Tuesday night at the Carson Center.
Ashley Ring was the lone Ace (11-8, 1-3 MVC) to finish with double figure kills with 11. Katie Klages led UE with 20 digs with Sawin following close behind with 19.
Lauren Ford led Lipscomb (8-6, 2-0 A-Sun) with 17 kills, including two set-clinching points. Jewell Dobson finished the evening with 14 kills. With the win, Lipscomb extended its winning streak to six matches.
Evansville played a dominant first set, finishing off with a 25-15 win over the Bisons. With the score tied a two early on, the Aces scored eight of the next ten to open up a 10-4 lead. Lipscomb would cut the gap to just three, 13-10, following a run of their own, but UE rebounded with a set-ending 12-5 run that would clinch the 25-15 win.
The Purple Aces looked to be cruising to a win in the second game, going up 9-3. Ring tallied four kills during that opening stretch. Evansville continued to hold a solid edge at 17-10, but the Bisons clawed back. They embarked on a 12-5 stretch that knotted the game at 22-all. An error by Lipscomb would later give the Aces a 24-23 lead and a chance to take a commanding 2-0 lead, but a kill by Kaycee Green sent the Bisons on a 3-0 run to even the match.
A back-and-forth affair ensued in the game three as there would be 11 ties leading up to a 14-14 score. At that point, though, Lipscomb scored a pair and would later extend the lead to 20-15. A pair of Lauren Ford kills was pivotal in the run. Evansville fought its way back to just a pair, 24-22, but another Ford kill gave Lipscomb the 2-1 lead.
Lipscomb used their momentum to their advantage, taking a 2-1 lead and never looking back as they would grab a 25-21 win to clinch the victory. After the Bisons jumped out 17-11, the Aces made a strong effort to get back into it, forcing Lipscomb into five errors to cut the deficit to just a pair at 20-18. That was as close as UE would get as Lauren Ford notched a kill to finish off the match.
Evansville will take to the road for the next three matches, beginning on Friday evening when they travel to Southern Illinois. The Salukis and Aces will begin play at 7 p.m.
