The annual Blessing of the Athletes ritual is scheduled for today - Tuesday, August 30 - at 6:00 p.m., in Neu Chapel. Student-athletes, coaches, and athletic staff are invited! University faculty, administrators, and staff are invited to attend and may sit in the Neu Chapel gallery (upstairs loft).

The Orr Fellowship is a competitive two-year employment opportunity that matches students with high growth companies in Indianapolis, Indiana. Students of all majors with a 3.5 GPA (or 3.2 with considerable leadership experience) are eligible to apply for this full-time postgraduate experience.

To start off I-House this semester, Fran Prexl from Ecuador will be singing for us! She is a senior economics major with a concentration in math and a minor in French. She loves to play guitar, read, swim, and of course sing! She loves all her friends here at UE, so you should come and listen to her put on a wonderful performance. Students, please consider participating in the UExplore Undergraduate Research Program this semester. The deadline for the Fall Semester student-generated proposals is Thursday, September 8. A digital copy (Word or PDF format) and eight paper copies of your proposal are due in the Office of Academic Affairs to Paula Heldt before the end of the business day of the proposal deadline.

You can request up to $1,000 for hardware and services to support your proposed research project. Proposals from nearly every department on campus have been funded.

Students, staff, faculty members, and administrators are invited to play in the University Symphony Orchestra and String Chamber Ensemble. The University Symphony Orchestra meets on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. The String Chamber Ensemble meets on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. in the Krannert Hall of Fine Arts. The Greek life community will be at information tables in Ridgway this week from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and 4:00-8:00 p.m., to answer questions you might have about going Greek, or to help you get registered for formal sorority recruitment. Just stop by on your way to class and learn more about finding your home away from home!

Student employment positions are still available with preference being given to those students with a federal work-study award. Eligibility for federal work study is based on federal need as shown through the FAFSA.

Both the student employment application and the student employment positions listing are available on WebAdvisor through the Student tab, under the new Student Employment section. Applications should be directed to the department for which the student is applying. Questions regarding eligibility should be directed to Catherine Carver at cc204@evansville.edu.

Two student employment orientation sessions are scheduled this week. If you are planning to work, and you have never worked on campus before, you are required to attend one of these sessions. The sessions will be held in Room 126 in Hyde Hall on Tuesday, August 30, at 11:00 a.m., and Wednesday, August 31, at 3:00 p.m.

You will need to bring either a social security card or birth certificate (original documents) and a driver’s license or student ID, as well as the required payroll forms, completed. The I-9, W4, WH-4, and direct deposit authorization forms can be found on WebAdvisor under the Student Employment section.

The first event is an IUPUI Graduate Fair at Indianapolis, planned for September 22. Approximately 90 programs attended this event in 2015

The second event is the Big Ten+ Graduate School Expo at Purdue University on September 25 and 26. Over 100 programs attended in 2015, including Harvard, Stanford, University of Chicago, Vanderbilt, and Duke University.

The third event is the Indiana University Law Day at Bloomington, Indiana, on October 3. In 2015, over 110 law school programs attended this event. This is the largest law school fair in the United States. For more information about the fair, go here.

Lora Becker, associate professor of psychology and director of neuroscience and the neuromarketing research center, has had an article published in the Journal of Undergraduate Neuroscience Education. The article is a summary of what has been accomplished in the honors society for neuroscience. To read the article, go here.

On August 23, David Unger, professor of mechanical and civil engineering, presented a technical paper at the XXIV International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in Montreal, Canada. This symposium is the premier conference in his field and is held only once every four years in a different country around the world. His talk was on stress concentrations due to the presence of a slot cut in a structural plate.
