The University of Evansville Fall Conference is today, Tuesday, August 16. A dessert reception will welcome everyone back to campus in the Matt Williams Lobby of Hyde Hall at 12:30 p.m. The Fall Conference begins at 1:30 p.m. in Shanklin Theatre. The Family Picnic completes the day starting at 4:30 p.m.

Fall Conference concurrent sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, August 17. All UE employees are encouraged to attend the session “Run, Hide, Fight – Preparing for an Active Shooter scenario” in Shanklin Theatre at 8:00 a.m. Sessions continue in the Schroeder School of Business Building at 10:00 a.m. A complete list of sessions can be found here.

The fourth and final round of proposals for funding from the Re-investment and Innovation Fund are due September 1. Please go here for submission forms and details.  

All are welcome! UE Newman Club, the University’s Catholic campus ministry, invites the campus community, especially incoming freshmen, to the first Mass of the semester on Sunday, August 21, at 1:00 p.m. in Neu Chapel.  Get a great start on the new school year!

When you register, be sure to put University of Evansville in the company line and select either Salvation Army or Seton Harvest in the Special Skills section.

We have space for about 35 volunteers between the two locations.

The Salvation Army address is 1040 N. Fulton Ave., Evansville, 47710. At this location, the volunteers will scrub and paint soup kitchen hallway, scrub down soup kitchen (cooking area) and equipment, clean walk-in refrigerator/freezer (walls, racks, and floor), and organize the garage.

The Seton Harvest address is 9400 New Harmony Road, Evansville, 47720. At this location, volunteers will harvest, weed, and plant.

The Day of Caring will begin with a kick-off breakfast at 7:00 a.m. followed by an inspirational program to engage volunteers. You don’t want to miss out on this great day in the community!

You do not need to use vacation time to participate, but you will need to get permission from your supervisor before you register.

The 2016-17 parking permits are now available for purchase in the Office of Safety and Security. Current permits have expired. The new permits will be sold between 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The price remains $50 for the academic year. Employees will once more be able to use payroll deduction to pay for their permits.

The UE Bookstore will be open on Saturday, August 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Sunday, August 21 from noon to 3:00 p.m. for those students wishing to purchase books or merchandise.

All UE employees are invited to attend  “Run, Hide, Fight - preparing for an Active Shooter scenario” on Wednesday, August 17, 8:00-9:50 a.m. in Shanklin Theatre. This information session will be presented by Evansville Police Department officers Kevin Corbin and Nick Sandullo.

Being prepared mentally can literally be the difference between life and death. Members of the Evansville Police Department Crime Prevention Unit will provide important information on how individuals should respond during the unfortunate event of an active shooter on campus.

All University empoyees are strongly encouraged to attend this session of the Fall Conference.

Lisa Kretz, assistant professor of philosophy, has had her paper accepted for presentation at the annual International Conference on Ethics Across the Curriculum. The title of the paper is Teaching Meditation, Teaching Ethics. It focuses on the dual process theory of mind and the associated automaticity of ethical judgment, as well as the positive role meditation can offer for intentional ethical behavior.

Paul Bone, associate professor of creative writing, recently published three poems in the online newspaper The San Diego Reader. His poems - APGAR, Daughter, and Present Infinitive - can be found here. 

Anne Hastings Fiedler, professor of music, and the Eykamp String Quartet, resident artists of the University of Evansville and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, will be honored at the 2016 Mayor's Arts Awards Ceremony on Thursday, August 18, at the Victory Theatre. The Arts Council of Southwest Indiana's annual Arts Awards honor individuals, groups, and institutions that have made significant contributions to the advancement of the arts in Evansville and the surrounding counties. Fiedler will receive the Artist Award, and the Eykamp String Quartet will be recognized with the Ensemble Award.

A research article by Young Kim, associate professor of political science, was recently published in the Journal of Peace Studies. The title of his article is "Causes of Gender Inequality in the Muslim World.”

Atefeh Yazdanparast, assistant professor of marketing, has had a paper accepted for presentation and publication in the proceedings of the 2016 American Marketing Association conference. The research focuses on the role of providing congruent/in-congruent haptic referencing on increased processing ease while making online purchase decisions of products with salient material properties.

Six postseason teams, five 20-win squads, and four conference champions comprise the non-conference schedule for the University of Evansville Men’s Basketball team in 2016.

“We are very excited about our non-conference schedule,” UE head coach Marty Simmons said. “The caliber of teams we will be playing in November and December will give our guys very important experience. Each game will present its own set of challenges while preparing us for conference play.”

A trip east on Interstate 64 begins the season as the Purple Aces will face Louisville on November 11. The Aces and Cardinals will meet up on the hardwood for the first time since 1957. Louisville was 23-8 last season and put forth a 12-6 mark in ACC play.

On Monday, November 14, the Aces open up the home schedule against Alcorn State. The Braves were one of the top squads in the Southwestern Athletic Conference last season, going 13-5 to take second in the regular season. Five days later, the Aces will be back at the Ford Center for a matchup against Morehead State. That contest will also mark the annual Fan Fest event, which will take place just outside the Ford Center. MSU is coming off of a 23-win campaign in 2015-16 that saw them advance to the finals of the College Basketball Invitational where they faced Nevada in the best of three series.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Evansville heads south to Nashville for the Challenge in Music City. Aces fans have the opportunity to make the quick trip to watch the squad play three huge games in three days. Running from November 25-27, the tournament also features Middle Tennessee State, Toledo, and UNC Wilmington. MTSU, who went 25-10, was one of the true Cinderella stories of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. After winning the Conference USA Tournament, the Blue Raiders defeated #2 seed Michigan State in the opening round of the tournament.

UNC Wilmington was another NCAA squad, going 25-8 a season ago. The Seahawks were the Colonial Athletic Association champions and put forth a great fight against Duke in the NCAA Tournament, falling by a 93-85 final. Toledo was also over .500, winning 17 games in the Mid-American Conference.

Home play resumes on Wednesday, November 30, as the Aces play the first of five contests in a row at the Ford Center. The stretch begins with Wabash. On Saturday, November 3, the MVC/Mountain West Challenge features Boise State making its way to downtown Evansville. The Broncos won 20 games last year.

Next up on December 6 is a contest versus Bowling Green. The Falcons posted 16 victories in 2015-16. Murray State comes to town on December 10 before the home stretch wraps up against Norfolk State on December 14. The Spartans won 17 games last year and finished second in the MEAC on their way to a berth in the CIT.

On Saturday, December 17, the Aces will play their final road non-conference game as they make the short trip to Clarksville, Tennessee, to face Austin Peay. The Governors are the defending Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Champions and faced Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Non-conference play wraps up on December 22 at home against defending Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Champion Mount St. Joseph.
